Canon XC10 Rated Highly for Performance in EU Broadcasting Report

HTML:
United Kingdom, 11 SEPTEMBER 2015 – Canon today announces that the XC10 video camera has been independently tested in accordance with European Broadcast Union (EBU) standards for HD content acquisition¹. The tests found that the large 1.0 inch Canon CMOS sensor coupled with Canon’s DIGIC DV5 image processor provides ‘little or no aliasing’ concluding ‘ its performance meets (HD) Tier 1, and it easily meets (HD) Tier 2L’² allowing its use in a wide array of broadcast and cinematography applications.

The XC10 joins several of Canon’s high-end professional broadcast cameras in meeting the criteria defined by the European Broadcasting Union, including the Canon XF305, the Canon EOS C300 and the Canon EOS 1DC. The XC10 has impressive low light performance and image quality, which, combined with its compact size and remote controllability, makes it an ideal main or secondary camera in HD broadcast acquisition.

The European Broadcasting Union recommendations exist to help broadcasters understand which technology is best suited for certain tasks. The UK’s digital production partnership broadcasters use these recommendations to ensure their content meets a minimum threshold.

“Canon strives to understand the needs of film-makers and broadcasters and creates a range of products to help meet their business needs and inspire them to take their work to new levels of creativity and productivity,” said Kieran Magee, Director of Professional Imaging at Canon Europe.

“The XC10 was developed to provide film-makers with a compact but powerful professional 4K camera that will be an asset to their creativity, especially for use in challenging conditions with limited space, or as a secondary camera in a set-up with a limited number of operators. The size of the device and its ease of use make it a perfect tool alongside a Cinema EOS or XF series camera, or as a standalone camera in its own right.”

The Canon XC10 is a compact 4K digital video and stills camera combining a large 1” (12.8mm x 9.6mm) sensor and a high quality optically stabilised 10x zoom lens offering a 35mm equivalent range of 24mm-240mm.

Sony's PXW-FS5 XDCAM Super 35 Taking on Canon's C100 Mark II

Surprised there has not been any posts about Sony's (yes, them again!) new PXW-FS5 which on paper seems pretty useful and weighing just 0.8 kg, it's pretty light too.

A good written review with some nice images I did not see elsewhere is here:

The same guy's YT review is here:

What are your thoughts on this?

iPad Pro vs Surface Pro 3, is Either for You?

HTML:
A lot of debate has hit the photography world since Apple announced the 12.9″ iPad Pro. Is it really the professional tool that Apples claims it to be, and can it compete with Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 for professional productivity.

Lee Morris at Fstoppers has jumped into the debate between the two most popular large tablets, along with Wacom’s Cintiq.

I have little doubt that the iPad Pro will be fantastic when it comes to its hardware. Sadly, the hardware is only half of the story. Without applications that are complete enough to pull us away from our desktops and laptops, I’m not sure that the iPad Pro will actually take off as a professional photographer’s work station. I’m sure photographers will be excited to edit their photographs on the iPad Pro in the beginning because they can, but if it isn’t easier or faster, they will quickly go back to their standard computers. Read the full article

I have been eagerly awaiting the Surface Pro 4, as have a lot of people. I have been using an 11″ MacBook Air, which I think is the best laptop ever made for my purposes, but I want to have one device instead of carrying both an iPad and MacBook Air when I travel. Watching the Keynote for the iPad Pro, I quickly lost interest, as it will still not be able to do the things I need a laptop to do. Clearly, the software and accessories to mate with the iPad Pro will have to improve.

That said, the Surface Pro 3 isn’t the perfect solution either as professional photo software UI’s aren’t optimized for smaller screens. Although Microsoft is working on this with the Windows Continuum project. I will note that I have become used to the annoyances with the 11″ screen and software like Lightroom, but I would love a UI optimized for the smaller screens.

The “professional” tablet space is definitely starting to heat up and here’s hoping software makes some major advancements over the next year or two to get us all on board.

Oh, and Microsoft, let’s see the Surface Pro 4 sooner than later.

Samyang/Rokinon 135mm on Sony a7r, a7s & a7rII

Dustin Abbott's excellent review of this remarkable bargain of a lens prompted me to buy one, though as I prefer not to MF on a dslr I bought the Sony E mount variant rather than the Canon. In case anyone cares about how this lens performs on 12mp, 36mp and 42mp sensors in Sony FF E mount bodies, here are some casual photos I've taken with the a7s, a7r and a7rII on the streets around my office on Independence Mall, Philadelphia, and my apartment c. 1.25 miles west of there (all hand-held). The uploads are full-size, but I've included a few crops too. With one or two exceptions they were all taken wide-open as the point of these excursions was mainly to see how the lens performs at f2. (Obviously some of the photos have little aesthetic appeal but were included to show just how good the sharpness, contrast, etc. are at f2.)

Canon Japan ME20F-SH Sample Video

HTML:
The Canon ME20F-SH camera was announced well before the Canon EXPO this past week, but definitely fit into the theme of new product lines and ideas. If you don’t remember, this specialized camera is capable of shooting at ISO 4,000,000!

The camera isn’t available until December and will set you back $30,000, but some of this technology is sure to trickle down into consumer products eventually. For now, this is definitely a niche product for the professional production world.

The video below shows some great examples of what’s possible at such high ISO, especially when turning the night into day.

Canon's 120mp DSLR Two Years Away?

HTML:
We’re told by a couple of people at Canon that the 120mp DSLR concept that was shown this week at Canon EXPO is at least 2 years away. That would put such a camera off until 2017 at the earliest.

I asked if the 120MP DSLR would be in a 1D or 5D body and was told that probably wouldn’t be decided for quite some time. Where such a camera would fit into the marketplace will dictate the ergonomic requirements in the end.

A source outside of Canon said to expect new lens development to be accelerated over the next few years in preparation for such a camera as well as “other projects” currently on the go. The same source also said there are a lot of new lens designs in the pipeline and not as many direct replacements as one might think there would be.

Broken LCD on 5DIII

So my new pride and joy was damaged after only owning it for 2 months!!
It’s gonna take 2 weeks to get the part, then 3 days to repair it, and it just cost me £50 for the privilege.
The camera was parallel to my lap while I transferred images to my laptop, it rolled over unexpectedly and the top plate LCD struck the corner of my laptop, I would recommend you always have your camera at 90 degrees if you are transferring images in this way. :'(

5D Mark III Dual Memory Card

Just got the 5D Mark III
Got an engagement tomorrow, and was wondering in regards of the dual memory card
I’ll be doing record to “separately”
SD = JPG
CF=RAW

Now writing RAW on CF can only hold so much and writing JPG on the SD can hold twice as much.
My question is, once the CF runs out of space, what happens ?
Does it stop writing to CF or does it overwrite the CF card?

Also the number of shots available on the bottom right of the screen, is that referring to CF or the SD ?

(both CF Card and SD Card is 32GB)

Thanks

Which lens should I buy for all around shooting

Hi

Recently i bought my 1st dslr canon 50d, and now I'm looking to get a new lens.
I had few lenses in mind but I just cant decide. For example Canon 17-40mmf/4l was my 1st choice good price but apparently it does not perform well on crop cameras, and lack of IS puts me of. So there is Sigma Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM but it is massive, and I just don't know, also lack of IS. Finally my 3rd choice Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L but is a bit pricey.
So my question is which would be best suitable lens for general use a bit of landscape some pictures of my cat portraits etc.

Thanks

Pete

Is the 50mm 1.8 STM sharper than a 70-200 2.8 II at similar apertures?

My 50mm 1.8 impresses me every time with incredible sharpness when shooting at f/2.8. However, the 70-200 IS II often disappoints at the same aperture, even at f/4 I can notice that the 50mm is quite sharper when doing close up portraits.

I prefer the colors and the bokeh of the 70-200mm, but can't get that tack sharp effect I'm used to with the 50mm. To be honest, it's only noticeable when zooming 1:1 in a decent monitor, so for 99% of the cases it will be the same thing, but it bugs me since this lens cost me over 15 times more than the 50mm.

Is the 50mm really sharper, or am I doing something wrong when using the 70-200?

Reco accessors for Sony A7R II

I just picked up a Sony A7R II, hopefully arriving next week.

What are recommended accessories?

Vertical grip - I generally add this to my half size bodies

Extra batteries? Or any special type of battery for grip?

cable release (wired or remote) - intervalometer?
external battery charger. This was a "required" with the original A7R.

L bracket.

Have meta bones adapter for my Canon lenses.

Anything else?

Canon EOS-1D X Firmware 2.0.8

HTML:
A few weeks ago we reported that firmware version 2.0.8 for the EOS-1D X had been installed by Canon service on a few cameras in Europe. However, we still haven’t seen a downloadable firmware update for the camera.

A reader of the site sent us an image of the new firmware on his EOS-1D X, so I imagine we’re going to see a downloadable firmware soon.

We’re still unsure what’s been updated in the new firmware.

thanks mathias

New Lens Mount Options for EOS C300 Mark II

HTML:

Owners and purchasers of the Canon EOS C300 Mark II will soon be able to benefit from a new lens mount service option which offers the capability to change the 4K Digital Cinema Camera’s original EF mount to EF with Cinema Lock or to a PL mount and back again.

After purchasing the C300 Mark II, service mount options will soon be available from Canon Regional Competence Centres (RCC) in France, Germany, Italy, Sweden or the UK. These services are expected to be available in October 2015; further details of how you can purchase the lens mount options will be communicated shortly.

Canon has also revealed that from early 2016 a PL mount version of the C300 Mark II will be available to purchase in all EMEA territories. Up until now the camera has only been available in an EF mount but by January 2016 customers can choose whether to purchase an EF mount or a PL mount version. The upcoming PL mount version of the camera will provide support for all of Canon’s PL mount Cinema lenses and other industry-standard PL lenses (Cooke/i not supported), thus allowing for even greater shooting possibilities.

Canon 120mp DSLR Information

HTML:
Canon’s development announcement of a 120mp DSLR took the photography world by surprise, as we expected some incremental increases in resolution, but more than doubling the 50.6mp resolution of the Canon EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R is quite the jump.

A lot is being made about the APS-H sensor in the prototype currently on display at the Canon EXPO. We wouldn’t read too much into it, as Canon always uses APS-H for their high resolution prototype sensors. The likelihood that Canon would bring back the APS-H sensor size in a consumer EOS product is between nil and none.

More information on the 120mp DSLR:

RAW files are 210mb

Camera ID in the EXIF is: EOS Y038

Camera prototype is only working at ISO 100

More Images of the Canon EF 600mm f/4 DO BR Lens

HTML:
Photography Bay has been doing some great coverage at the Canon EXPO in New York City. Eric has posted a ton of images of the Canon EF 600mm f/4 DO BR prototype on display.

I hope for an 800mm f/5.6 version of this lens, which would probably end up smaller than a 600mm f/4.

Sony A7SII announced !

A Raw file is a Raw file, right? Well, not exactly. Lately, there's been a lot of talk (and a lot of anger) about the compression Sony uses in its Raw files. Compressed Raw files aren't uncommon, but they're usually compressed in a way that retains all the original 'raw' data from the sensor.

Rumors, Rumors Everywhere. [CR0]

HTML:
This week of innovation and new prototypes from Canon have brought a flurry of rumors into our inbox. All of it comes from unknown sources and some of it is quite fun.

It’s Friday, I figure I’d share some of things we’ve received during this very busy week.

The Return of APS-H

We’re told that Canon will reintroduce APS-H and slot it between the EOS XXD line and the EOS 6D. It won’t appear in a flagship body like the EOS-1D Mark IV.

CR’s Take: Never gonna happen. The APS-H announcement this week is likely for security technologies, as Canon stated themselves in the press release for the 250mp APS-H sensor.

EOS 7D Mark II Firmware Update for Touchscreen

We’re told that the next EOS 7D Mark II firmware will add touchscreen support in the next firmware release, version 2.0. In this communication, we were told that the Dual DIGIC processors caused issues with the touchscreen working.

CR’s Take: The omission of touchscreen on the EOS 7D Mark II had nothing to do with the DIGIC processors, and everything to do with durability according to Canon.

Canon PowerShot SX70

We were told a PowerShot SX70 was on the way, it would have a focal length equivalent of 24-4800mm, that’s a 200x zoom.

This is the image we received for the camera, can you see anything wrong with it? (Click for larger)

CR’s Take: No doubt that this camera is coming one day, but this isn’t it.

EF 14-24mm f/2.8L on the way

We’re told that Canon will introduce a 14-24 f/2.8L lens in Q1 of 2016, it would be lighter than the Nikon equivalent.

CR’s Take: The introduction of the EF 11-24 f/4L killed any chance of a 14-24 f/2.8L. Canon will instead update the EF 16-35 f/2.8L II, which is a much more manageable and usable lens than the 14-24 or even the 11-24.

Happy Friday and enjoy your weekend, and please remember, everything above is very likely to be untrue and this post was for entertainment purposes only.

Announcement: Sony A7S II Camera Body

HTML:
Out of darkness cometh light

Ultra-high sensitivity up to 409600i with low noise across the whole range

Wide dynamic range across entire ISO range delivering smooth tonal gradation from dark to bright conditions

In-camera 5-axis optical image stabilisation for expanded shooting possibilities

Internal 4K movie recording featuring full pixel readout without pixel binning in full-frame format

Wide range of professional movie functionality including S-Gamut3.Cine/S-Log3, new Gamma Assist Display, enhanced Zebra Function, Full HD 120fps recording and 4x/5x slow motion recording and full pixel readout without pixel binning in full-frame format

High-speed AF with enhanced accuracy in wide ranging scenes and advanced shooting functions

Sony today announced the latest addition to its award winning series of compact, full-frame α7 cameras with the introduction of the α7S II. Offering ultra-high sensitivity and wide dynamic range across the entire ISO range and 5-axis image stabilisation for greater shooting control, the α7S II delivers stunning image quality for photographers who shoot in the most challenging light conditions. Be it the brightest of mornings or darkest of nights, the α7S II enables new levels of photographic expression at whatever shutter speed you wish to deploy. The α7SII also incorporates a host of pro-style movie functions including the ability to shoot 4K video with full pixel readout and no pixel binning in full-frame format, making it an extremely appealing proposition for photographers and videographers alike. The α7S II delivers an awe-inspiring sensitivity range of ISO 50-409600[i], thanks to the combination of its 35mm full-frame 12.2 megapixel[ii] image sensor and BIONZ X image processing engine. The sensor optimises the dynamic range across the entire ISO range and broadens the range of tonal gradation in bright environments and minimises noise in dark scenes meaning that it delivers impressive results even in the most extreme conditions. The upgraded image processing algorithm of BIONZ X maximises the sensor’s capabilities and improves depiction throughout the full sensitivity range with particular emphasis on the mid-to-high range. This means that the resulting stills and movies demonstrate extra-fine detail with minimal noise.

Preorder the Sony A7S II: B&H Photo | Adorama | Amazon

Video Master

The α7S II can record 4K[iii] movies internally in the XAVC S format[iv] meaning that content is wonderfully detailed. Because information from all pixels is utilised without line skipping or pixel binning, the camera can maximise the expanded power of the full-frame image sensor and produce 4K movies with higher image clarity and negligible moiré. Full pixel readout without pixel binning is also employed when shooting Full HD[v] movies which means that it collects information from approximately five times as many pixels that are required to generate Full HD[vi] and condenses the information to produce extremely high quality movies.

In a first for the α7 series, the α7S IIcan record 120fps at 100Mbps[vii] with full pixel readout without pixel binning in full frame format which can be edited into wonderful 4x/5x slow motion footage[viii] in Full HD. The α7S II also has the ability to shoot 4x/5x slow motion footage internally which can be immediately reviewed on the camera screen.

Video functionality has been further enhanced with new profiles; S-Gamut3.Cine/S-Log3 and S-Gamut3/S-Log3. These new profiles deliver wide dynamic range and colour correction is easier to perform. The α7S ll even offers impressive 14-stop latitude in the S-Log3 gamma setting. The camera also supports S-Gamut/S-Log2 which is very popular among cinematographers and videographers. Gamma Display Assist is a new function that allows users to monitor images or check focus when recording S-Log movies and the Zebra function has been improved for even greater control.

5-Axis Image Stabilisation

The new α7S II is equipped with the innovative 5-axis image stabilisation system that is proving extremely popular in the α7 II and α7R II cameras. The system corrects camera shake along five axes during shooting, including angular shake (pitch and yaw) which has the greatest impact on image quality and tends to occur with a telephoto lens, shift shake (X and Y axes) which becomes noticeable as magnification increases, and rotational shake (roll) that often affects night shooting or video recording.

Autofocus accuracy

The autofocus system on the α7S II has been upgraded and now offers 169 AF points for fast, precise focusing with greater accuracy.[ix] The power of the image sensor means that the absence of noise in images generated, enables the Fast Intelligent AF to detect contrast more easily and react speedily even in low-light situations (as low as EV-4), when it’s even tough to check with the naked eye. When shooting video, the AF performance is twice as fast as the predecessor model.[x]

Electronic Viewfinder

The XGA OLED Tru-Finder in the α7S II has been upgraded and offers the world’s highest viewfinder magnification[xi] of 0.78x (roughly 38.5 degrees in diagonal field of view) and shows clear images across the entire display area. The use of ZEISS T* Coating ensures sharp reduction of reflections on the viewfinder and unlike an optical viewfinder, the OLED Tru-Finder can be used to instantly show how exposure compensation, white balance and other selected settings are affecting the displayed image.

User upgrades

A number of enhancements have been made to the look and feel of the α7S II to make it more user friendly, reliable and intuitive. Its magnesium-alloy body is both light and highly robust and the grip and shutter buttons have been re-designed so that the camera feels more natural in the hand. For situations when you just want to blend into the background, silent shooting mode can be activated for 5fps continuous shooting[xii] and reliability has been enhanced with reduced-vibration shutter movement.[xiii] The lens mount has been further reinforced to ensure greater resilience, particularly when attaching third party lenses and users can now charge the camera via a USB power supply whilst the camera is in operation, thus extending battery life. For greater comfort and safety, Sony is also launching the LCS-EBF; a new premium leather body case for the α7S II which is also compatible with the α7R II and α7 II.

The α7S II is also Wi-Fi® and NFC compatible and fully functional with Sony’s PlayMemories Mobile application available for Android™ and iOS™ platforms, as well as Sony’s growing range of PlayMemories Camera Apps, which add a range of fun creative capabilities to the camera. Sony's RAW compression

Hi everyone,
There are no intensions for label bashing by posting this.
But it might be a good reason for staying away from A7 series (e.g. A7s for astro as a second body) until this issue gets resolved.
"A Raw file is a Raw file, right? Well, not exactly. Lately, there's been a lot of talk (and a lot of anger) about the compression Sony uses in its Raw files. Compressed Raw files aren't uncommon, but they're usually compressed in a way that retains all the original 'raw' data from the sensor." More here...

ST-E3-RT master + autofocus assist from a slave 600EX-RT?

If you have a camera mounted ST-E3-RT running as master plus any number of radio connected 600EX-RTs is it possible to utilize the AF assist on one of the 600s since the ST-E3-RT doesn't have the capability or is AF assist only possible from the master unit? I like the size of the ST-E3-RT but I also like the AF assist on the 600s and since the ST doesn't have the AF assist built in I have been wondering if there is a way around it. I've been reading around the Internet as well as checking out the product manuals but unable to find an answer to the question (or maybe I missed it?). Thanks in advance!
