Post your Engagement/Pre wedding images

A thread for any Engagement/Pre wedding images

Heres one I shot purely by chance. I met this really nice bloke when I was traveling the US in Las Vegas. We were chatting and he told me he was going to ask his girlfriend to marry him in the Grand Canyon. It happened they were going the same day as me. I told him I was a photographer and he asked if I would photograph their engagement. Obviously re-enacted afterward!! But beautiful place to get engaged and what a fantastic memory. They were really lovely people and so happy for them!

Where are the Rumors? EOS 5D Mark IV

HTML:
There’s been a lot of chatter about the EOS 5D Mark III replacement, most of it rooted from a talkative forum member at DPReview. We haven’t played into it, because that sort of detailed information doesn’t come out 6 months before the release of camera, it never has and it never will. Leaks out of Canon has tightened up significantly over the years (my bad), which makes the chanced of such rumors being true, highly unlikely.</p>
<p>There is no imminent announcement for an EOS 5D Mark III replacement and we’ll likely be seeing an EOS-1D X Mark II beforehand. The rumored August 14, 2015 announcement date came and went without a new product from Canon, but we should be seeing something in the next month or so. Please be sure to check sources on posts, we do posts things that aren’t told directly to us.</p>
<p>All that said, the EF 35mm f/1.4L II is the real deal and we should see that shipping before December of this year. Beyond that, the next Canon DSLR is an unknown at this time.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

Have any 5Ds / r or A7rii users noticed sensor blooming in direct sunlight?

I'm finding that if shooting a scene where there is strong sunlight (like the sun through leaves on a tree) there appears to be sensor blooming, (some well defined straightness exiting the brightest point).

Seeing the same on the A7rii, could it be due to the size of the pixels?

Speedlite 580 vs Elinchrom RX-one

Hi guys, a few weeks ago, I was considering an external power pack to take my studio flashes outside (elinchrom rx-one) and you saved me from an expensive mistake by explaining that the pack i wanted to use from goal zero was not suited. So while looking for alternatives, I thought I'd test my speedlite 580 with lastolite hotrod softbox and compare it to the elinchrom rx-one with a similar elinchrom softbox, both at full manual power to see what the difference is and to my surprise, they really do look the same in light output, so instead of investing in a power pack, I'm better off taking my speedlite along as far as I can see.
Settings were ISO 125, Shutter speed 1/125 and F8.

Hoya Announces HD3 Series of Tough Filters

HTML:
<strong>HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Aug. 18, 2015</strong> — Kenko Tokina USA, Inc. is proud to introduce the new Hoya HD3 series of professional photographic filters. The HD3 UV and Circular Polarizer filters give photographers the ability to capture high-quality images in extreme settings without loss of color balance, contrast, or clarity due to adverse environmental conditions. Additionally, the new filters’ light-weight and rugged design means no scratches, stains or damage to the front of the lens. The Hoya HD3 filters are 4X stronger than standard optical glass and the anti-reflective coatings are 800% harder than previous generations while offering a stunning 99.7% light transmission rate. To learn more about Hoya’s HD3 UV and Circular Polarizer filters, visit <a href="http://HoyaFilter.com/HD3" target="_blank">http://HoyaFilter.com/HD3</a></p>

<strong>Professionals Agree: Hoya HD3 Filters Are the Amazing</strong>

Professional photographers are raving about the optical quality of their pictures using the new Hoya HD3 filters. Award-winning photographer Hudson Henry found the new filters vital for a recent European photo shoot.</p>
<p><em>“The UV filters are amazing. I leave it on while shooting sunburst photos without seeing any noticeable degradation,” says Hudson Henry. “These UV filters are like perfectly clear armor. It’s especially handy for conditions with dust, crowds of people, salt spray, and sweat.”</em></p>
<p>Extreme photographer Stan Moniz, a longtime Hoya user, raved about the new filter series.</p>
<p><em>“These filters are so durable and so easy to clean, it allows you to do things other photographers haven’t done and get images that haven’t been captured before,” says Stan Moniz. “These filters are the bomb to use. I can’t understand why a professional photographer wouldn’t always have these on them.”</em></p>
<p><strong>The HD3 Series of Filters</strong>

The new HD3 series of filters consists of a UV and Circular Polarizer in common sizes ranging from 37mm to 82mm. Building on the brand’s reputation for producing the toughest filters on the planet, Hoya engineers have developed a new ultra-hard nano-coating formula in addition to a new process for applying layers of antireflective coating to the HD3 glass. These two factors combine to yield a coating that is 800% harder* than the optical coating on the previous generation of filters.</p>
<p>The HD3 UV professional filter features a new 32-layer proprietary coating system that greatly reduces or eliminates reflections on the surface of the glass and yields a 99.7% light transmission rate. This means the filter has virtually no effect on the color balance, contrast, or clarity of the final image. Additionally, the hardened, antistatic top-layer is water repellent, stain and scratch resistant, and cleans easily when smudges or fingerprints are introduced to the surface.</p>
<p>The optical glass in the new HD3 UV professional filter is made in Japan, using Hoya’s exclusive HD hardened glass that is 4x stronger than normal optical glass (UV only).</p>
<p>The filters in the new HD3 series utilize a lightweight, one-piece**, low-profile aluminum frame to house the glass. This one-piece design allows the filter to maintain perfect parallel alignment to the sensor plane for maximum sharpness, while the low-profile frame eliminates vignetting when used on ultra-wide-angle lenses.</p>
<p>Hoya HD3 filters were developed in conjunction with Kenko Tokina USA, Inc. and intended solely for U.S. distribution.</p>
<p>* 800% harder coating on UV only, the coatings on the Circular Polarizer are 200% harder than previous generation.</p>
<p>** UV only – Circular Polarizer requires two pieces for rotation purposes but maintains a very low-profile design.</p>

MotoGP and 100-400 Mk II

Hi!

I was searching the internet for examples of its use for bike racing before I bought the new 100-400. I couldn't find much, so I'm putting some of my shots here for you and maybe someone else to see. I got the lens one week before the MotoGP GP of Czech Republic which was held at Brno circuit this past weekend. I must say I'm impressed. I didn't expect such quality and professional look from the images. The lens is incredibly sharp wide open. I think I've closed it down just a couple of times when I wanted more DOF. It's wonderful for portraits as well as it blurs the background really nicely even at f5.6.

When you see many of them in the hands of proffesionals who shoot the whole season, you know it's good. I'm lucky to attend one race per season and this lens is much more than I hoped for. I don't need anything better (not that I can afford it)!

Regards!

Canon EOS 5Ds SD & CF Card Speed Comparison

HTML:
Camera Memory Speed has completed their comparison of which memory cards have the fastest write speed with the EOS 5DS. Needless to say, 50mp RAW files are enormous in size and having the fastest card you can inside the camera is important. Also not surprising, is SD cards (*note: Canon doesn’t support UHS-II. <em>thanks m8547</em>) cannot come close to the write speed of a CompactFlash card, as the fastest card was the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search/atclk/Ntt/Lexar+Professional+2000x+UHS-II+32GB/N/0/InitialSearch/yes/sts/ma/Top+Nav-Search/BI/2466/KBID/3296/DFF/d10-v1-t14" target="_blank">Lexar Professional 2000x UHS-II 32GB</a> at only 71.8 MB/s.</p>
<p>How they test:</p>
<blockquote><p>The 5Ds is mounted on a tripod and a remote timer is used for 30 second shooting intervals. A manual lens is used and focused using live view at maximum magnification. The subject is a static test scene under controlled lighting.</p>
<p>A comparison of different test subjects was conducted with the the Canon 5Ds. Using the Lexar Professional 1066x 128GB CF card, the most detailed scene resulted in 101.4 MB/s average write speed (75.6 MB average RAW file size), while a scene with moderate amount of detailed averaged 84.0 MB/s (55.7 MB file size), and with lens cap on 84.0MB/s (45.8 MB file size). The most detailed scene is used for this card comparison test. <a href="http://www.cameramemoryspeed.com/canon-5ds/sd-cf-card-comparison/" target="_blank">Read the rest of the article</a></p></blockquote>
<p>Below are the 10 fastest cards from their tests.</p>

<p>I found it interesting that a SanDisk card didn’t make the top 5. However, we can’t comment on how reliable the cards in this test are going to be. Although, we’ve only ever had a handful of memory cards fail and found Lexar and SanDisk to perform the same in that regard.</p>

7d mk ii AF background focus???

Hi, sorry if this has been brought up and answered already, but I rented a 7d mk ii for the week and in al servo mode, it always seems to want to focus on the background, behind the subject. I am only using the center focus point. Out of the 900 pictures I took yesterday, only maybe 150 were in absolute focus. The ones that weren't in focus, I could see the background was crystal clear. I am shooting birds and when I turn on my focus points on the PC the center is right over the center of the bird, but the background is in focus. What do you think I'm doing or is set wrong? Thanks for your help.

Canon 5D Mark iii vs Nikon D810 - Event Photography

Having trouble deciding whether to purchase a Canon Mark iii with 24-70mm 2.8 and get it reasonably cheap or totally change my brand and head to Nikon D810 with an equivalent lens.

I currently do birthday, christening and engagement photography gigs and might be doing weddings in the future. I have a Canon 650D rocking with a 17-55mm f/2.8 IS + 600EX flash, and wanted to upgrade to FF, but at the same time keeping the my 650D as a backup.

What would you guys do ?

The Full List of EISA Photo Category Award Winners

HTML:
Below is all the award winners in the photography categories for the 2015/2016 EISA awards. The usual suspects all seem to have won awards, including Canon and Sigma. It looks to be a slow year for Nikon, but I’m sure they’ll win a lot of awards next year with their recent announcements, most notably the 24-70 f/2.8 VR.</p>

It can shoot at 10 frames per second, with a huge buffer even when shooting in Raw. The build quality is superb, with full weatherproofing that can cope with almost any conditions. Distortion, chromatic aberration and vignetting are all kept reasonably low. Construction is superb, with weather sealing for outdoor use, and the autofocus is fast and silent. Full-frame users specialising in landscape, architectural or interior photography who demand exceptional optical performance need look no further. Why I want a 1D X Mini

The other day I went to an event. It was a public outdoor event which I was not covering, and as such I did not take my camera. My better half asked me when we were leaving home, are you not bringing your camera? And I told her, no I want to relax and have fun.

Needless to say, I wish I had taken the camera as I ended up testing angles with my phone's camera and now need to go back and take some real shots. (added: not of the event obviously, as that is finished. Shots of the place it was in.)

The RX100 Mark IV is the top of the range truly pocketable camera right now. But I still have not bought it.

I would love Canon to bring out something similar - or dare I say, better. What about you?

It's never going to be a 1D X, but something that can take quality RAW images and fits inside my front pocket. I need it to double as a second camera for jobs so I want top image quality, 4K video etc. Basically as much as a 1D X as you can fit in a small body.

5DS/5DSR - manual focus assist

5DS or 5DSR manual focus requires even more precision in manual focus compared to other canon bodies to get full advantage of camera resolution.
But manual focus assist is one of the important features where Canon is lagging behind other vendors.
Sony with EVF and focus peaking in manual focus mode is very helpful making manual Canon lenses more easy to use on Sony A7 series bodies than on Canon bodies.

There were many questions about manual focus assist for Canon bodies on the forum and one of the obvious answers here is to use of external camera LCD monitors.

I bought recently Sony CLM-FD5 5-inch Full HD clip-on monitor for use with my A7R and A7S.
It worked very well with Sony bodies.
It is very light and convenient.

Tried it on my Canon 1DX and found that CLM-FD5 is perfect tool for manual focus assist for 1DX
As it works on 1DX it could be used also on 5DS and 5DSR.

It comes with two HDMI short cables – one for A7 (one cable end is micro HDMI) and the other one is compatible with Canon (one cable end is mini-HDMI).

This monitor has focus peaking feature.
When monitor C1 button is pressed, image becomes B&W and image details in focus become highlighted with red color.
In focus peaking mode image could be magnified by 1,3x, 3x or 6x by monitor itself in addition to the camera provided magnification.
Viewpoint could be moved around by monitor joystick.

Canon 1DX has in-camera magnification of 5x or 10x in live view, the same I believe is on 5DS.
So on Canon bodies it is possible to have following magnifications in manual focus mode using CLM-FD5 (together with focus peaking):
a) 1x, 5x, 10x (no monitor magnification)
b) 1.3x, 6.5x, 13x (no camera magnification , 1.3x monitor magnification)
c) 3x, 15x, 30x (camera 5x magnification, 3x monitor magnification)
d) 6x, 30x, 60x (camera 10x magnification, 6x monitor magnification)

This could be very handy for 5DS/5DSR users who need manual focus assist on such high res camera.

What is also interesting that in high magnification mode even small vibrations of tripod becomes extremely visible.
I was surprise to see how vibrations are high even on heavy sturdy tripod, which I always considered very stable before.
So it is possible to see when camera vibration are damped and then using simple remote control (e.g. Canon RS-80N3) make a shot when there is no visible camera vibrations.
All this could deliver best possible results for 5DS/5DSR using tripod and manual focus

Interesting enough that recently there were a lot of discussions of how Canon is useful to promote Sony – Canon lenses on Sony bodies, limits of Canon sensor DR at low ISO making Sony sensors more attractive, lack of EVF and focus peaking for easy manual focus etc.

Here is just opposite example – when Sony could provide great help for Canon users requiring more easy and more precise manual focus on Canon bodies.

Pixma Pro 100 for $12

Over on a Fuji site, they've managed to get a special promo code for the Pixma Pro 100 at B&H.

The printer is normally $400, if you use the promo code, it lowers the price to $300. There is a mail in rebate of $250, bringing the net cost to $50. They're throwing in $38 in free paper, giving a net printer price of $12.

Check it out:-

Days since DXO sensor score of 5DS = 112. Number of lenses re-tested = 0.

Many were wondering how much of a retraction/backpeddling effort DXO would have to make once lenses they have cudgeled for lack of Perceptual MPix would fare when a 50 MP sensor was now sitting behind them.

This, of course, depended on what form of accountability DXO took in this endeavor:

Option 1) Use the same scoring algorithms, retest existing lenses on a 5DS/5DS R and watch Canon catapult over Nikon and Sony glass in their rankings.

Option 2) Pull a classic DXO move and declare it 'time to make a change' and either abolish aggregate lens scores or normalize those scores to the resolution of the sensor it was tested on.

Option 3) Turtle and hide until a7R II models arrive.

See subject. Looks like Option 3 is well underway.

Canon 5Ds-r Martin Parr / Magnum - Just use it on Program Mode !

Well this is interesting and as usual, controversial. :o

Canon Professional Network interview documentary photographer Martin Parr from Magnum about his use of the new 5Ds r and his print workflow.

http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/education/technical/martin_parr_lifes_a_beach.do?utm_source=newsletter_august_2_15&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Newsletter

Just use in in Program not Manual Mode, get a wet behind the ears college intern to process all your digital files and then printed them as 10" x 8" for 50p. ;)

Used 5D2 or Refurb 6D?

I think it may be time to dump the 7D that I've been keeping around as a backup to my 5D3 and get a full frame body to use as a backup camera.

Looking around on Craigslist, I see that local 5D Mark 2s with very low shutter actuations are around the same price as refurbished or gray market 6Ds. Either one would make a good backup body for my needs.

If you had to choose one of these bodies and the cost was equal, which would you choose?

The way I see it, the 5D2 has the joystick controller that I'm used to, but the 6D has a better sensor. What am I missing?

Help me, oh Canonistas!
