I need some advice. I don't want winter to hinder me from taking pictures outside. So....

How do you guys protect your gear when you're going from the freezing temperature outside to the warm temperature inside your homes?

And I know in these situations, the bodies that are weather sealed will build up condensation on the outside of the camera body, but does condensation find its way inside of the weather sealed bodies as well?

OK, I've had the lens for 2 days and have taken a few shots. A Fish-Eye lens is a new kind of Fish in my camera bag. This is the first time I've use one and I have to say its a wild experience. At 180 degree field of view (diagonal) it puts practically everything thats in front of the lens into the frame. I've also used the Rokinon 14mm and 35mm lenses and was impressed with those, so decided to give this one a try. At $500. its not terribly expensive, especially for f 2.8.
I don't have a lot of shots yet, and none that can be considered artistic or print worthy. Hopefully that will change as time goes by. I am posting my initial "hands-on" thoughts at:

The 600EX-RT was at $449 last December at major retailers like B&H. At one point Adorama even had it at $425. This year, however, I was a little disappointed to see that it has remained at $499 at all the authorized dealers. Should we not expect any price drops on this unit at all for the foreseeable future?

I'm looking for a Pelican case but can't find one that I like. I tried the 1510 but it was too small. Got the 1650 but it's way too big.

Any suggestions on which case I should look at next? Here's what I want to be able to fit in it:

YET ANOTHER 50 art AF issue thread, I'm so sorry guys...

The first 50 Art I had that didn't work had a slight squeaky sound, like high pitch "peeeep", when I ran the af back and forth between mfd and infinity.

The one I have now that worked up until recently, didn't have the squeak, and I had totally forgotten about my first having that sound, but today I heard it also in the new one and it has been on and off working for a while.

QUESTION:

Does your working 50 Art have a squeak?

Does your 50 Art with AF issues squeak?

I'm suspecting a defective AF motor on mine.

Wife tried shooting XTi with 70-200 IS2 + 1.4 TC3 through glass pane for birds at feeders. The focus confirms, but results are horrible. I put the lens setup on my 5D3 and get the same horrible results.

When shooting the same distance without glass pane in the path, focus is dead on for both cameras. The glass pane is squeaky clean.

Any ideas? I'd guess trying a polarizer but I don't have one the correct size...

A while back I found this beautiful chart from the Magic Lantern team about a bunch of specs you don't find anywhere else on the internet.

Especially interesting are the write speeds, because you don't need cards that can read/write faster than the camera can.

So I was wondering if anyone would know how fast the 7DII writes off on a CF card.
Currently using the 7D, I don't need +600x or +100MB/s cards because my camera only writes 40-50MB/s max.

(I use Transcend 400x CF cards)

And I know it's useful when off loading data onto the computer, but I find 50MB/s already pretty good

(still using USB 2.0, fml)

Anyway, please respond if you know something about that.

Ok... i know the 5DIII (and 6D/1Dx) are high ISO monsters... but to get not only usable, but what i think is fantastic IQ from uber high ISO was somewhat unexpected.

I came across this leopard on a temple in the middle of the jungle in India, it was already getting dark, but still fired off a few shots at iso 12,800. I did not expect anything amazing from them, it was more of a record shot, but when i got to my computer it was amazing. some light post and this was the result!

I visited my son yesterday and we wanted to take some photos. He had a canon Speedlight attached and everything was fine until he decided to use live view to get the camera down lower. The flash would not fire. If we turned Live View off, it worked just fine. This was shooting a couple of young kids, so we did not find the time to investigate. Is there something in the menu that would allow the camera to be set up that would allow using Live View and an attached Speedlight at the same time? It just made no sense. Thanks for your help!

I know a lot of discussion has been floating around about how "limited" the AF system is on the 6D. I just purchased a 6D and so far I love it. I had a 5D2 (sold it) and I find the 6D to be a great FF camera.

A word on the AF system. I only use the center point 95% of the time anyway. It allows me to be a little more accurate on what I want my camera to focus on and then I recompose. For objects in motion I still find the center focus point to give me the best results. I have shot that way on my 7D and have been really happy with the results. I have used the center point on my 6D and the AF system seems to be fast, very fast actually. I think it's just as fast, if not faster than my 7D.

Anyone done any tests on this? If the burst rate were higher, the 6D could easily replace my 7D. Well, not really, I own a crop body for several reasons, but I am really liking my 6D.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I just talk to my Photographer friends at the Town Camera club, and One recommend me to get This Fastest Lens CANON EF 50 mm F/ 1.0 L USM= $ 2500 to $3500.
Yes, I have a GAS. Illness again.
Yes, Quite cheap for this fastest Commercial Lens in the Market, But When I do my research last night, and find out that, not quite sharp and great as new Canon 50 MM , F/ 1.2 L

Disclaimer, I'm not a pro, once in a while I get some good pics but not like a lot of people here. Bokay?

This was a challenging situation for the 7DII, I eventually moved up to ISO 12800. It was a party, dimly lit, all pics were with the Canon 35mm f2 IS. I started with spot focus, eventually moved to using all points, I never found a sweet spot.

It is capable of taking some decent pictures under those conditions, here are the ones I saved:

At this point I'm wondering if I return this, I want to like this camera but wow, the keeper rate seems low. Extremely low compared to the 5DII (that I also own) and even to the 7DI (I've got that too).

This is fun! I'm sure lots of you do (or don't) get the whole "lenses focus light" thing and are aware (or aren't) that if you hold a Canon* lens between a light bulb and a piece of paper you'll likely see an unfocused blob of light projected onto the paper, which with a bit of jiggling will turn into a projection of the lightbulb and its fittings... try this with the 400mm f/5.6L and you can get sharp projections of relatively close things with a foot or so between paper and lens - I was quite surprised to find that as you move the lens further from the paper and adjust the focus ring you can start to sharply focus a much larger projection and of closer subjects!
It's like this thing starts to become a closer focusing medium format lens!... oooor potentially a less-light, higher-magnification crop of a larger format image, or, er, a "teleconverted" set-up without the degradation of a moar-glass approach, right?!

Has anyone here played around with these kind of ideas much? It's a bit exciting but I'm getting way too sleepy to keep playing tonight... maybe.

My other thoughts, considering the actual (massive) distance between the sensor and back lens element of the 400mm f/5.6L prime is that this thing could probably be hacked down in length and have a focal reducer thrown inside and virtually turn an APS-C Canon camera into a 400mm FF equivalent mini-monster... with a bit of confidence and know how...

I've been playing with a wee 1.25" 0.5x focal reducer I grabbed off ebay - was thinking of engineering something for the EOS M... Could also get Medium Format lenses to play along with FF cameras, woo

Title says it all... I'm planning to purchase another lens and I wanted to get opinions on where I might gain the most.

At present:

5D3
Rokinon 14
Rokinon 24
16-35L IS
24-70L II
70-200 IS II
50 1.4
100L Macro
TC III 1.4 and 2.0
600EX-RT x 3 and SR-E3-RT

I had a 17 TS-E but sold it as I felt it lacked the sharpness I'd hoped for and while shift was great, tilt wasn't as noticeable at 17.

I recognize a gap in telephoto coverage at the long end, and debated the 500 II, but got a 1Dx instead, and will get the 500 next fall, and rent that for now when needed.

I'm most strongly considering the 85L II and the 24 TS-E. The 70-200 is great for portraits, but can be unwieldy for more intimate settings or when my primary focus is portrait. Also, 1.2 would be sweet. As for the TS-E, I love landscape, and this is bread and butter for the TS-E. I also have enjoyed playing with architecture, but mostly outdoor thus far.

Is having so much wide coverage contraindicating the TS-E? Is the 100L and 70-200 a knock on the 85? Would there be other suggestions? Basically, where does my gear stand to gain the most?

Before it's suggested, I have 2 Gitzo tripods, RRS Gimbal/Pano/Macro set ups.

Dear Canon, if you are listening here is my wish list for 2015.
In order of importance (for me at least):
1) A new 50mm lens with IS, preferably f1.4. I trust you it will be a great performing lens so no need to mention that.
2) A new 85mm lens with IS, preferably f1.8-f2.0 to keep size down.
3) A 430EX-RT with radio capabilities. I'll be fine if it's only slave and not master.
4) An EOS M with descent IQ and AF, I want a small mirrorless camera compatible with my Canon accessories. Preferably it will be not much bigger than a Sony a6000 and it will have 4k. I don't mind if it has a Sony sensor.
5) 5D mkIV is what everyone is waiting for and that's fine with me, just do the best you can with that one. Make sure it has 4k, better DR and High ISO performance (I am sick and tired of the Nikon guys picking on us). If you want to make it perfect put built-in radio speedlight control.
Hint: if you use a crop of the Sony 50MP sensor you will end up with 30MP, great IQ and outstanding High ISO performance.
6) 6D mkII, please, dual SD cards, 4K and a few more cross type focusing points is all I need but I would also love an articulated touch screen and dual pixel AF. Image quality is great as is but if you can improve it I will not say no. Built-in radio speedlight control will also be welcome.
7) A new 20mm f2.0-f2.8 that performs well.
8) A serious full frame mirrorless EOS FM with a few full frame lenses like 35 f2.8 STM pancake, 24 f2.8 STM, 50 f2.8 STM pancake and 85 f2.0 STM to get us started. Just make sure AF will be top class.
No need to mention that 4k and a big nice EVF will be essential for such a camera. Size should be no bigger than a Sony A7 or a Fuji XT1.

I have heard claims that "Dot Tune" was a reliable method to AFMA a lens. I have also heard claims to the contrary. Most of those claims have been long on opinion and short on data, so I decided to give it a try myself on a 7D2.

The results are as follows: (under incandescent lighting)

150-600: dot tune (150 +9) (600 +14) - Reikan (150 +5) (600 +6)
70-200: dot tune ( 70 +7) (200 +4) - Reikan ( 70 +2) (200 +3)
17-55 : dot tune ( 17 +4) ( 55 +3) - Reikan ( 17 +5) ( 55 +9)
10-20: dot tune ( 10 +4) ( 20 +9) - Reikan ( 10 +5) ( 20 +17)
100: dot tune (100 -8) - Reikan (100 +5)
30 : dot tune ( 30 -2) - Reikan ( 30 +1)

I changed locations, repeated the test and got the following: (under flourescent lighting)
150-600: dot tune (150 +11) (600 +17) - Reikan (150 +5) (600 +6)
70-200: dot tune ( 70 +7) (200 +5) - Reikan ( 70 +2) (200 +3)
17-55 : dot tune ( 17 +4) ( 55 +3) - Reikan ( 17 +5) ( 55 +9)
10-20: dot tune ( 10 +3) ( 20 +7) - Reikan ( 10 +5) ( 20 +17)
100: dot tune (100 -10) - Reikan (100 +5)
30 : dot tune ( 30 +1) - Reikan ( 30 +1)

The observations are:
1) The Reikan values stayed the same between the runs
2) The Dot Tune values varied up to 3 units between runs
3) Reikan and Dot Tune only agreed once.
4) Reikan and Dot Tune can disagree by up to 15 AFMA units

If you look at the discrepancies under the two runs.
incandescent - 4, 8,5,1,1,6,1, 8,13,3
fluorescent - 6,11,5,2,1,6,2,10,15,0

it appears that Dot Tune is affected by fluorescent lighting.

A quick visual verification of the extreme cases indicates that the Reikan values are far more accurate that the Dot Tune values.

My conclusion. At least on a 7D2, don't waste your time using Dot Tune on your lenses, get Focal and do it right.

With all this talk of a possible 50mp camera I am starting to think how I would utilize a camera like that for my work (mostly weddings). I would definitely not mind having access to 50mp for portraits, but for other aspects of the wedding day, like shots at the reception, it would probably be my preference to switch to mRAW which with a 50mp sensor would be what? Around 20mp? However, I have never used those formats and am wondering how much, if any, IQ you loose from compressing the image in camera like that?
