85L with DLO

I am considering buying an 85L II, and I was wondering if anyone out there processes their 85L images with DPP using DLO?

The reason I want this lens is the way it renders images; there's simply nothing like it. A very minor secondary concern for me with a lens like this is sharpness. While I know it's sharp wide open, its not bristling with detail like my 16-35/4 IS, 24-70 II, 70-200 II or 100L. They're all so technically good I see very little improvement with DLO and my FF Canon lenses.

Does anyone out there have experience using DLO with the 85L II, and what effects it can have?

OK, so what difference does 50MP make when it comes to print?

I've recently moved from a Canon 1Ds3 to a 5Ds as my main camera, I've been looking at how that 51MP affects my print workflow

Having made steps from 11MP to 21MP to 51MP over the years, I thought a simple print test would show the massive improvements since my 2002 vintage Canon 1Ds (effectively my first DSLR)

http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/cameras/canon_5ds-print-comparison.html

Sure, the differences are there, but the real surprise came when I asked some non photographers to compare the prints.

If ever there was a reminder that what we sometimes think of as important doesn't matter one jot to (most) people who actually buy stuff, this was it ;-)

Of course, I could take some solace by viewing it as a testament to my upsizing and printing abilities, but that's not fooling anyone for long!

ND Variable, Stacked, or Maui Jim?

All,

I think I know what I will do but I want some opinions. I've recently become more interested in using ND filters. I've got both a 6-stop and 3-stop 77mm B&W screw on that works on MOST of my lenses. But, my new favorite and most used lens is the 24-70 2.8 ii, and that uses an 82mm filter. So, I am thinking about an 82mm investment. Whatever I do, I'll get a step-up ring so any new filter can work on the other lenses. I would use these only for still photos and not video.

So I am contemplating: Get a variable 82mm (yeah, I know about the dreaded "X" issue) versus a couple of 82mm screw on fixed filters (I can always stack a 77, then a step up to an 82mm shooting a little wider to allow for vignetting). I am not really serious about holding my sunglasses in front of the lens.........but maybe?

I don't think I want to go with a Lee-type system because that is too much to carry for the amount of times I'd use it.

Finally, anyone have any experience with the Xume magnetic system?

As always, any thoughts from the collective experiences here are very appreciated. Then, maybe I'll need to post yet another backpack question!

Thanks in advance.

Hangout Vacation Gelgaudiskis 2015 (Magic Lantern RAW 60fps)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiIoP7R_Pek

This summer as well I get opportunity to visit my friends back home in Lithuania. I got very nice memories from my previous visit last year and I was happy to visit them again at Gelgaudis, at south of Neman (Nemunas) River, Lithuania. Despite bad weather we spend a wonderful time. Got some shorts memories from there. Thank you for watching ;)

Little bit about technical site. First time I used only hacked software from my Canon 5D mark III, called Magic Lantern. All videos were captured at RAW (MLV files transfered to DNG) and time-lapses were done using Silent Pictures mode from Magic Lantern.

Patent: Canon EF 600mm f/4 DO IS

HTML:
A lens we’d all like to see happen has appeared in a patent, a 600mm f/4 DO IS. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a patent for DO lens with a longer focal length than 400mm.</p>

C300mk2 release date pushed back?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but from every article I had read the expected release date for the C300mk2 was September of this year. I just checked BnH and now it is October 20. I've done a little research and can't find any specific reason.

It's only a month so it's not that big of a deal, but I was just really hoping to have it for September. Were all the September dates just guesstimates?

What's your thoughts: Photozone's Canon 11-24mm f/4 L review?

Hi all

On 16 July 2015, Klaus from Photozone.de posted his review of the Canon EF 11-24mm f/4 L USM :)

http://www.photozone.de/canon_eos_ff/940-canon1124f4?start=1

The analysis outcome from testing a copy of that lens (on the 50 MP Canon EOS 5Ds R) indicates it faces a number of challenges (understandably) - particularly at 11mm:
  • corner sharpness - not sharp at any aperture
  • vignetting - very high, especially wide open 3.3 EV
  • barrel distortion - high at 4.46%
  • Chromatic Aberrations (border CAs) - high ~3.8 pixels

Flare actually is quite good. No mention is made of bokeh (understandably).
Vignetting, barrel distortions and border CAs can be (mostly) corrected in post.
But sharpness can not actually be added in post. I realise that 50 MP is a new benchmark (which Klaus also clearly states in his review).

I appreciate the physical constraints and challenges of creating such a lens - and I applaud Canon for creating this lens... However I am really interested what other CR folk here think of the lens - particularly seeing the Photozone review. ;)

Looking forward to your comments, for a useful & good thread of discussion.
(PS... there are a number of threads about this lens, e.g. announcement, and now some in use, with great photos - but I particularly wanted to receive & read people's thoughts on the lens review!)

DxOMark Review: Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II

HTML:
One thing is certain with DxOMark reviews, they will always stir up debate. DxOMark has completed their review of the brand new Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS II, which has been highly regarded since photographers got their hands on it. It fixed everything that was wrong with the previous version and performs far better in the real world.</p>
<p>From DxOMark:</p>
<blockquote><p>As the replacement for the original model, Canon have improved just about everything they can from operation through to optical quality. However it’s the performance at the long-end that’s crucial and while Canon have made advances most of the gains are in the outer field where users of Canon’s crop bodies aren’t so likely to benefit. Sure the chromatic aberration is lower and sharpness at the edges is better than the old model but users aren’t going to see any improvement in the center.</p>
<p>The new model is also up against a capable and more accessibly priced rival in the form of the Tamron 150-600mm though it’s larger still and somewhat disappointing at 600mm. For all that, the Canon is an attractive option and a strong choice for the long term… <a href="http://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-100-400mm-F4.5-5.6L-IS-II-USM-review-Worthy-upgrade" target="_blank">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II Pricing Information [CR2]

HTML:
<strong>*UPDATE*

</strong>A retailer has written in and said they were told the lens would launch at $1699 USD. This info has apparently come from a Canon rep in a recent conversation with the retailer, and not an official price sheet.</p>
<p>Sometimes reps enjoy conjecture as much as the rest of us.</p>
<p>Original Post:</p>
<p>We expect to see the brand new Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II to be announced next month, with the popular date for the announcement being Friday, August 14, 2015.</p>
<p>Exact specifications for the lens are still unknown, but the big one a lot of people want to know is pricing.</p>
<p>We’re told the EF 35mm f/1.4L II will cost <del>$1899 USD at launch</del>, which is about $400 more than the current Canon version and more than double that of the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/898831-REG/Sigma_340_101_35mm_f_1_4_DG_HSM.html/BI/2466/KBID/3296/DFF/d10-v21-t1-x393562" target="_blank">Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art, which is $899</a>.</p>
<p>We’re told that this pricing may not be set in stone, as it’s “older information”. Currency movement could change the launch price next month. For the record, the Nikon 35 f/1.4G is currently around $1799.</p>

Your crop vs your full frame camera.

Many of you have or have had a crop sensor camera and a full frame camera. Asking specifically about portraits: Do you see a huge difference? Does your lens choice vary that much? Say a person has an EF 85mm 1.2L or EF 200mm f/2L... would you hesitate to use those lenses on your crop sensor camera for portraits? Maybe someone has examples of those two lenses on both a crop and full frame camera of the same subject? Thanks!

E-TTL III a Long Way Off [CR2]

HTML:
We were told a while ago that Canon was working on a <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2015/05/new-flash-system-in-the-works-cr1/" target="_blank">new metering system for their flagship flash</a>, we dubbed it E-TTL III. Not much has been said since, although we’ve seen the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2015/07/canon-announces-the-speedlite-430ex-iii-rt-flash/" target="_blank">announcement of the Speedlite 430EX III-RT</a>.</p>
<p>We’re told that while the next Canon DSLRs (EOS-1D X and EOS 5D Mark III replacements) will support the new flash metering system, the launch of the flash is actually a “long way off” and won’t arrive before late 2016 at the earliest.</p>
<p>It’s worth mentioning the source did say that Canon’s new system should perform better than the Nikon’s, which has long been superior.</p>

Problem with Adorama Customer Service

I order a Think Tank bag from Adorama and as a member of Kelby One I remember that Adorama was giving a 10% discount on Think Tank bags. So I searched for the webpage and found an Adorama webpage that provided instructions on how to get the 10% discount.

I followed their instructions and order the bag but did not see the 10% discount (which the order page said would be applied on the final step of the order).

So I wrote the Adorama CS and the rep asked for the page (which I sent to him). That was Thursday. Bags will be delivered on Monday, have not heard back from Adorama (in spite of writing a second time), and my card has been charged the full amount.

Perhaps I will get a response, but so far service is rather terrible.

1DX CF Door Flex

Hey guys,

This might seem like a dumb or silly thing, but I'm wondering if it is normal to have a bit of flex on the CF door when gripping the camera?

I've been doing a lot of walk-and-shooting lately on my travels and I started noticing that I could feel the CF card door move slightly under the pressure of my grip. It could be completely normal and I've never noticed it do it before, it's just that I've literally been hand holding my camera for five to six hours a day for the past week and have just started getting sensitive to it.

How noisy is the IS motor of the 70-200mm F/4L IS USM?

Hi guys

I'm going to purchase a 70-200 lens that I will use for video work. IS is a must, but I don't really need F/2.8 and the extra weight. However it's been mentioned several places on the net that the IS motor in the 70-200mm F/4 IS USM is very noisy. I will be having a shotgun mic mounted on the camera, and I'm worried that it will pick up the IS motor noise.

Anyone here who have experience with the 70-200mm F/4L IS USM in regards to camera mounted microphones and the IS noise? Is it so bad that I'll have to suck it up and get the 2.8 Mk II version?

PhotoZone starts testing lenses on 5DSr

We often take for granted that the 1Ds III, 5D2 and 5D3 were all within 1 MP of each other. That allowed Canon users to tap into lens review sites that used a 'reference' camera for many years, which allowed us to (within that 21-22 MP FF testing ground) compare lenses relatively consistently against each other.

Oh, the times they are a changin'.

Disregarding the useful but likely one-off test on the 5DS rigs by LensRentals, PhotoZone is (to my knowledge) the first site that has published resolution numbers on a 5DS/5DSr rig. To them, LensTip, and others, this migration suuuuucks pretty hard* as it represents a need to retest everything. They'll be at this all year, I'd guess.

To the point, though: Photozone's reference camera is now the 5DSr, and they have two lenses to report on with the 50 MP:

  • Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Art (the resolution trends vs. aperture are the same as other reviews, but the scale of the resolution is obviously increased)
  • Canon 11-24 f/4L USM (impossibly, the center performance is best wide open, but it's an odd duck in the corners at those wide FLs)

To PhotoZone's credit, they refuse to give a 1-5 star rating to the optical quality of those two lenses until they've had more lenses to compare against.

- A

*DXO, despite being batsh-- crazy, oddly gets full marks here as they do update their lens testing as new bodies are released. But that's another conversation.

5DsR + Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art Strange Error

I was testing my new 5dsr and the time to put the sigma 35mm art , something strange happened , appeared some circles in both images , jpg as in the video, the raw disappear , but look at the preview .

after some research I found that it was the fault of the Lens aberration correction // peripheral illumination , disabling resolve the issue .

55-250 IS on crop sensor vs 100-400 (mk I) on full frame

Cross-posting from Reddit. There are probably more Canon users on this forum.

I recently bought a Canon 100-400 L IS to go with my 6D. Based on the reviews it looks like on the 6D it should be better than my 55-250 IS on my T3i, and almost as good as the highly regarded 100-400 II without having to spend $2k. But I've done some tests, and it doesn't look any better than what I had before. My 55-250 is much sharper than my 100-400 in the corners, and the same or slightly better in the center. But the 55-250 has a bit more CA and a bit lower contrast.

Here's my comparison: http://imgur.com/a/K5aAy
The 100-400 is on the left on my 6D. 400mm f/5.6 1/25 sec ISO320.
The 55-250 is on the right on my T3i. 214mm f/5.6 1/15 sec ISO800.

Is the 100-400 supposed to be this soft in the corners? Or did I get a bad copy? It's kind of disappointing to spend 8x as much ($800 used vs $100 used) on a lens and get worse results.

I adjusted the exposure of each in LR to be about the same, so don't compare the exposure settings above, but I applied no other adjustments and set sharpening to 0. The setup is not ideal, and the light is not that great. I left the tripod in the same position for both shots, except for re-aligning slightly. The chart is printed 11x17 size on plain paper, and it's at the size and resolution limit of my printer. I tried printing it on 8.5x11 paper, and the finest lines aliased despite setting "4800x1200 DPI equivalent" resolution whatever that means. The test chart is a vector PDF I found online. The distance from the camera to the chart is about 15 feet. A real test chart, longer working distance, better lighting, better alignment, sturdier tripod, etc would be nice, but I don't think it's necessary since I can get good results from the 55-250 and from the center of the 100-400

Here's The-Digital-Picture's comparison (with the 55-250 STM selected because that looks the most like my 55-250). http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=856&Camera=736&Sample=0&FLI=5&API=1&LensComp=113&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=7&APIComp=0 Note that the TDP test chart is twice the resolution of mine, and they have a much better test setup. Understanding Lens Patents

Quite frequently, Canon rumours publishes information on Canon lens patents.

Mostly these posts include a diagram showing lens elements in a number of groups, with arrows going backwards and forwards, along with a descriptions including positive and negative positive and negative positive.

Well it confuses the heck out of me.

Has anyone got a 'Understanding lens patents for Dummies' guide :)

In all seriousness, I'd like to know a bit more about lens design, so any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

DoF features : wishlist or stupid question ? your opinion ...

Hi,

Context: I have only started using fast lenses with nifty fifty 3 years ago, then bought 100 2.8 L Macro 2 years ago and finally pressed the button for the 70-200 2.8 L IS II last year (bundled with the 7DII) ...
Use case:
- I have been enjoying shallow DoF for portraits or nice bokeh (in macro/near field), but sometimes feel that my DoF is not fully optimized : face is sharp but part of the hat or necklace is not, that flying bee is a bit blurred in the back of that lovely rose, the bird is sharp from tip to tip but so is too much of his background and sometimes closing that much the aperture doesn't give me enough speed to freeze it (with decent ISO) ...
- Wanting shallow DoF for bokeh / quite open aperture for speed (bees/birds... ) so fighting to get just enough but not too much ... And in many situation (portraits in a parade, flying things ...) you cannot get a second attempt after checking it at x10 on the image once taken...
Disclaimer: I have been playing with DoF preview button, but i didn't find it super precise to make the distinction of sharp/beginning of blur, especially with the darkening of the viewfinder in not fully sunny days / inside ...
I never changed focussing screen though, a bit newbie on that ...
Idea of feature(s):
1) "DoF bracketing" : we have exposure bracketing, so i would propose similar feature where you can do say 3 or 5 shots, and vary aperture 1/2 stop, 1 stop ... in between. With 10FPS like on the 7DII, click & voila ! It is all about the same picture and then you select the perfect one once zoomed in x10 or once back home on your gigantic screen ...
2) "DoF indication as overlay" : on 7DII you can overlay some stuff on the screen ... i would propose similar feature if transmission possible to the body and calculation done inside : on the lens i see the focal distance => could it be reported to the body and then DoF calculated like on the apps, and then displayed on the screen ? (in stills macro for example i can do depth measurement, then open apps on smartphone, and calculate/adjust DoF ... but lengthy and not practical ...)

Your thoughts ? Is it plain stupid because there are already ways to do something similar (combination of DoF preview button and change of focusing screen ?) ? Or would that be useful to any of you ?
In that case, do you think it could take place as a normal in-body feature in a distant future on some special stuff like say magic lantern ...

Thanks for your feedbacks!
