It was a relatively eventful week for Canon, from new lenses, to new firmware, to a new service advisory.

New Lens
Canon Introduces the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM along with a new lens hood and protective filter designed for it. We all seem to be pleasantly surprised that the price of the lens is $125 USD.

While the optical performance looks to be similar, the build, increase in aperture blades and STM upgrade makes this lens a worthy upgrade to the EF 50mm f/1.8 II.

EOS 5D Classic Service Advisory
Canon issues a service advisory for the original EOS 5D camera body.
EOS 7D Mark II Firmware 1.04
Canon released an updated firmware for the EOS 7D Mark II. Firmware 1.04 fixes various issues with the camera. Please be sure to follow the firmware upgrade procedure in the instructions that comes with the firmware.

There are a few reports of issues with the update, so if you don’t want to take the risk, maybe wait a few weeks if you aren’t experiencing any issues with your EOS 7D Mark II.

Canon XC10 Review… and it’s not pretty.
Cinema5D did the first review of the upcoming XC10 video camera, and there wasn’t a lot of love for the camera. Especially when the $2499 USD price tag is considered. If there are more reviews like this, expect to see big price drops fairly quickly.

This is not an announcement of a new product, Sigma is just letting us know that the Arca compatible foot for the Sigma 150-600 f/5-6.3 OS Sport is now available and retailers should have it soon.

From Sigma:

We are pleased to announce the availability of TRIPOD SOCKET TS-81 that is the optional lens foot which can be attached to the SIGMA 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Sports. It is compatible with the Arca Swiss quick release plate and the clamp. The deliberately designed length of its rail provides the flexibility to adjust the center of gravity making it balance perfectly, even while zooming or using accessories, such as a tele converter and battery pack. Consideration has been given to the portability and transportation of the lens when Tripod Socket TS-81 is attached. The lens hood can still be reversed and the lens stored in its original padded case, even with the Tripod Socket TS-81 attached. Incorporated into the Tripod Socket are safety stopper screws to prevent the lens from falling. There are 2 sizes of screw holes, 1/4 and 3/8, making it compatible with tripods other than Arca Swiss, too. When it is compared to the supplied tripod socket, it offers more space between the lens and device, and the change of grip has improved the usage as a handle for carrying.

There’s a thread on the FredMiranda.com forum that says a few users have experienced lockups of their 7D Mark II after upgrading to firmware 1.04.

From FredMiranda

I decided to update the firmware since I do have the 70-200II ( even though my 300 2.8 is usually on there )….Camera locked up twice shooting one game, I was looking through view finder turned away looked back through and had no info like it was shut off…the second time it was resuming from sleep….

One of our forum moderators recommends the following procedure after updating firmware. It can solve some issues, but not all.

My recommendation with any new firmware is to recordthe camera settings, and after installing the firmware, do a camera reset, remove the battery for a few minutes, then restart the camera and restore the settings. That will eliminate some issues, but not if there is actually a firmware issue.

Please report on our forum or the FM forum if you’re experiencing lockups after updating to firmware 1.04 on your EOS 7D Mark II.

The most talked about product from Canon at NAB was the XC10 camera, both for good and bad reasons. I have been on the fence about the XC10 and decided to wait for some reviews.

Cinema5D has posted a first impressions review with footage from the Canon XC10.

From Johnnie Behiri:

All in all I would expect a market leader like Canon to deliver a more solid product especially when the price tag is so high for what it is. I can sum up that working with the XC10 was simply tiring for me. Too much menu fiddling and “worries” about staying in focus but hey, who said that the way to produce nice looking images should be easy ….

This review is not a glowing puff piece, it’s a pretty negative look at what was initially perceived as a strange product from Canon, especially when the $2499 USD price tag is considered.

Leica has discovered a serious bug that owners of the new Leica Monochrom Type 246 should be aware of.

LEICA SERVICE ADVISORY

Today, Leica Camera has issued a notice regarding a compatibility issue with DNG files from new Monochrom (Typ 246) and Apple’s Photos App. From Leica:

Leica Camera would like to inform you that the Leica Monochrom (Typ 246)’s DNG files are currently incompatible with Apple’s ‘Photos’ App in Mac OS X Yosemite causing the library to crash and potentially lose all existing image files in the Apple Photos library.

As we will start shipping the new Leica Monochrom in the coming days, it is important that all dealers, sales personnel and customers are aware of this incompatibility issue.

With the new Apple ‘Photos’ App, when loading Monochrom DNG files from the new Monochrom, the library will crash continuously on loading. This may cause the Apple Photos library to be destroyed. This means that pictures previously taken with any other camera will be lost. As such, Leica Camera does not recommend using the Apple ‘Photos’ App for DNG files from the new Monochrom (Typ 246) until further notice.

Leica and Apple are collaborating to resolve this issue and develop a solution so that the DNG files from the new Monochrom can be used with the ‘Photos’ App without any issues in the near future. It is anticipated that Apple will have this resolved in the next update for ‘Photos’.

Meanwhile, we recommend all users of the new Leica Monochrom to use Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC/6 for DNG files of the new Monochrom. The latest version of Adobe Photoshop is fully compatible with Mac and Windows PC. The JPEG files from the new Leica Monochrom work with all Apple applications.

Leica Camera Inc. will include a ‘Warning Notice’ regarding the Leica Monochrom (Typ 246)’s incompatibility with Apple’s ‘Photo’ App in all product boxes.

We always recommend using Adobe products to process Leica DNG files, but if you are using the Photos app in Mac OSX it is important to be aware of this issue. Please do not hesitate to call or email us with any questions.

Pentax Australia has suggested that a full frame camera from the company will be addressed “closer to November” of this year on their Facebook page.

The Pentax digital medium format 645 is quite a good value and I suspect their first full frame camera will follow that same concept. Pentax has to do something that is feature rich and a great value if they want people to buy their 35mm DSLR.

Sometimes it’s nice to get a new perspective on an older lens. The EF 50mm f/1.2L might be one of the most polarizing lenses in the Canon lineup, some can’t live without it, while others wish it never existed. The contrasting opinions of the lens are usually because of the focus shift that some photographers experience with it. Certain shooting styles make the issue more prevalent for some.

Friend of the site Dustin Abbott has completed his thorough review of one of my favourite lenses in the Canon lineup. I love the EF 50mm f/1.2L as well as the EF 50mm f/1.0L. I think I just have a fetish for fast 50’s!

Dustin has this to say about the 50L when compared to the competition:

The biggest threat to the Canon 50L has been the release of the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART lens. TheZeiss Otus 55 f/1.4 (review coming next week) remains the class leader since its introduction, but its dizzying price (nearly $4000) and lack of AF means that it will stay off most photographer’s radar. The Sigma, however, has image quality that charts much better than the 50L’s along with autofocus, although it can struggle with focus accuracy and consistency. It also retails for about a third less than the 50L (which retails for $1450 when not on sale). You can read my review of the Sigma here. Is it the better lens? It is certainly sharper and has better contrast, but I’m not convinced that it has as “magical” a drawing/look as the 50L.

I agree with most of what Dustin says in his review and I’d recommend the EF 50mm f/1.2L to anyone.
