Lighting advice

Well I took the plunge and upgraded my lighting. Sold some stuff..found a couple great deals and ended up with a couple 600 exrt's and a ste3. I have bounced flash inside (every once in awhile using a light sphere) and used fill flash on AV for a long time. I have gelled a flash a couple of times too. However, with the new flashes I was thinking of trying to up my game a bit. I'm looking for an initial set up for portraits…outdoor and indoor…that includes these flashes. I've been reading on this forum and some others and looked at strobist as well. I was considering a couple set ups and wondered what people thought.
1)BH Westcott 43" apollo orb speed light kit. Add a phottix multi boom maybe? or some other boom?
2)Impact 7' parabolic umbrella (white diffusion) with light stand kit. would need some sort of boom as well
add some sandbags as well

These are both…with some sort of boom…around the $200 mark I think. I was wondering if people thought either of these were any good or if there were any other ideas that folks had. #1

Not to be mean... but how does this person/group get work?

I'm usually ok with the proof is in the pudding... so if you as a customer see a photographer's catalog... and you think... I'm good with my wedding looking like that... then you deserve what you get... but I'm looking through the photos... and I'm seeing the heavy use of flash... shiny t zones as a result... harsh shadows behind the subject... I'm seeing teeth that should have been whitened in post... I'm seeing dreadfully fake smiles (which you could blame the subject... but shouldn't the photographer make the subject feel comfortable enough to elicit a real smile)... I'm seeing a photo of a couple (I presume the parents and the shot is so unbalanced... the poor mother is barely in the shot... I'm seeing photos that are out of focus... and I'm not saying I don't have a photo or 1500 that aren't entirely in focus... but they are not in my CATALOG (I don't do weddings... but I accept that there are those who do it and do it well).

Here's the link they advertised... it is just frustrating... having said that... I don't hit a home run everytime either... but it isn't in my highlight reel.

Link redacted...

5DS and 5DS R Sensor Scores at DXO

If you've seen my postings on the forums, you know I don't take DXO too seriously. When someone says the same lens is disappointing on one body and is best-in-class on another, they are generally more a source of giggles than useful info.

All. that. said. My daily vigil begins, feel free to bookmark and do the same:
http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Canon-EOS-5DS-versus-Canon-EOS-5DS-R___1008_1009

Hate DXO or love DXO, I am hard pressed to think of another reviewing institution that inspires such chaos, bile and frenzy in the photography forum world as these folks. No matter what they say about the 5DS, the photography world will be alight with all sorts of crazy after their take on the 5DS rigs is unveiled. Personally, I'm hoping for a great zingers like:

"The 5DS comes ever so close to outperforming the D7200"

"This landscape and studio camera really underdelivers at ISO 10,000."

"Canon finally delivers great resolution, but we don't give high marks for that anymore. Did we mention our brand new scoring system?"

[Rubs palms together gleefully] :D

Review: Canon EOS M3

HTML:
<p>For the parts of the planet that actually get the opportunity to buy the brand new Canon EOS M3, this is a worthwhile read. For the rest of us, we’re going to have to decide if we want to buy a “grey market” M3.</p>
<p>Dan Berdal of DnK Photography has done a very “real world” review of the little camera and compared it to his workhorse, the EOS 5D Mark III.</p>
<blockquote><p>Mirrorless cameras are the future of photography. At some point the bulk of a camera like the 5dmkiii + high end lens makes you a worse photographer. If you’re serious about photography, but your current camera is so big that you don’t use it, then this is a great option. Personally I think that this camera will be a great walk around camera. The image quality is more than sufficient for capturing life memories and travel shots.</p></blockquote>

Poor AMF numbers on 1.4 TC Mark III with F/2.8 L IS II USM and Canon 5D Mark III

I used Focal to check the AMF on my 70-200 F/2.8 L IS II USM and then tried again with the TC. With the lens on it's own I got a reading of -2. However, with the TC I got an expected reading of -29 and an error. It finally decided on -19 when I told it to continue within the camera's limits. I had noticed that my photos were getting pretty soft lately which is why I tried Focal. Is it possible to get the TC looked at/fixed or should I consign it to the bin?

Travel insurance - worth it for old camera?

Hi,

I'm going on holiday in Ethiopia for 2 weeks in a week and I'm taking my 600D, the kit 18-55 and the 75-300 lens (canon). They're all in good condition but I've had the 600D for I think 3 years now (don't remember the exact purchase date at the moment). I know this isn't an expensive kit, but if it got lost/stolen/etc. it would be rather annoying and it would be good to get at least some kind help towards buying a new kit.

So I wonder if it's worth getting an insurance for this or if that's even possible. I've seen various policies were your item can't be older than 3 years (my camera might be, not 100% sure and can't check right now) and you need proof of purchase in your country of residence. I live in the UK but the equipment was bought new on Amazon in another EU country where I'm from and I think they might have been bought with my dad's card. So well, not so easy. :D

Does anyone have experience with this? Is it worth it in my case?

Thanks!

24-70L II, or Art 50mm, or Art 35mm?

Do I need to rent a backup body and lens for indoor wedding photography? I was asked by the bride (a good friend) to be the primary photographer. Perhaps, I should rent a Canon 5D mkIII and the Canon 24-70L II, or Sigma Art 50mm, or Sigma Art 35mm?

Currently I own a 5D mkII, 24-105L, 70-200L IS II, 100L, Canon 50mm f/1.8 (first version 1987), Samyang 14mm, and Canon 580EX II.

Thanks all

prom and individual portraits lens

Ok I have a 5dMrkIII, 24-70 2.8 IIL canon, 70-200 2.8 IIL canon, 16-35 2.8 IIL canon lenses, I am finding that when I go and take pictures of my daughter and like senior pictures of friends kids they are wanting a lot of focused up close and boken behind, SOOOOO we have Canon 50 1.2L lens and the Sigma 50 1.4 art lens. I really don't know how much I will use this lens so I don't know if spending 1500.00 on the canon is worth the money I'm spending.
I'm looking for any suggestions on these lenses from people who have them and looking for real world testing is the Sigma for the 950.00 or so the best buy of the two? I'm not so much worried about how I have read that the auto focus on the sigma is not quite up to the canons yet, but anyway just looking for any suggestions to a person who is not really anything more than a casual user to all of this.

Thanks!!!

Art Wolfe's Gear

Browsing through some back issues of Outdoor Photographer (October 2014, page 48), I found this sidebar in an article about Art Wolfe's retrospective work. Always been one of my all-time favorites. His choice of gear is interesting, and his comment about the "doctor" is even more interesting.

tips for Barcelona?

Hi guys,

every now and then I see a thread like this with interesting photo-travel tips and so now I thought it would be a good idea to consult with you, because after some time I'm looking forward a short vacation trip with friends and my first visit of Barcelona. It will be in late April, 4days, two couples (not really a group of photo enthusiasts, so I'm not going to make it a main objective), I expect some nice architecture (I thought it would be a nice place to try TS-E, but I'm afraid I won't be able rent it anywhere around), I look forward the sea side (a walk on the promenade, beach, marina) and (hopefully) nice, warm weather for a change :)

... so, should you have some tips for us, I would like to read them and would appreciate

Thank you!

Is the 16-35 f2.8 for $1000 a better deal than the f4 version for the same?

There's a like new mkii version for sale locally... I think I can probably get the price to $900 or $950, but obviously the f4 version is widely lauded for roughly the same price.

Here's the rub... I don't like wide angle photography, so I would only rarely use it... But let's not go into that. For the same money... Would the f2.8 mkii version be a better purchase than the f4?

Back & Forth, No 4K for EOS 5D Mark IV?

HTML:
After yesterday’s rehashing of past rumors in a package mimicking new information, EOSHD is reporting the 4K video reports in the EOS “5D” line are untrue.</p>
<blockquote><p>…..the company believes a 4K 5D Mark IV would completely overshadow the recently released C100 Mark II and so wouldn’t happen, but that Canon LOG would likely go into the camera to allow shot-matching with the XC10.</p></blockquote>
<p>This sounds completely plausible. I get the feeling that Canon doesn’t see a big future in DSLRs for serious video productions and will try to further grow their Super 35 Cinema EOS cameras instead. The XC10 is the odd camera in the strategy, but we’ll reserve judgement until we hear from people that have used it in the field.</p>
<p>We can’t confirm a “5Dc”, but we can confirm that we were told there would be 3 “5D” cameras in 2015 and that we’ve already seen 2 of them.</p>

Zeiss Distagon T* 2.8/21mm Review by Dustin Abbott

Hello everyone. There are a lot of exciting new options in the wide angle department for Canon users, but I recently spent time with one that's been around for a couple of years and really enjoyed using it. Some of you are fans of Zeiss glass and would probably enjoy taking a look at some of these pieces.

Question about video on a 7Dd Mark II

Hi All
I'm not very good with video technology so I can't look up the right term.
I took a video of a parade.
It looks fine except when something moves past.
Not sure how to describe it but it's hard on the eyes to watch.
It's like a small movement or breaking up of the moving object.
It's not that perceptible at first glance.
Any idea of what that might be?
If someone does know how might it be overcome.
Is it by having ia faster frame rate (or a slower one)?
The camera is on default settings (I think)
Is there any other setting to turn on / off?
Hopefully my explanation isn't too vague.
I find it hard to explain it.
Never suggested possible things to look up would be good.

Advice on purchase Sigma 35 art

Currently I have the Canon 24 f/2.8 IS (non-L), the Sigma 50 art and the Canon 40 f/2.8 pancake.

I use the 50 art a lot for indoor shooting in low light (mainly at f/1.4 to f/2), but I find it sometimes a bit too narrow on my 5D III. Often f/2.8 is not enough in low light for me. Therefore, I consider getting a 35 art next to my 50.

How is the autofocus on this lens? What are your experiences? How accurate does it focus using center focus? How accurate does it focus using cross-type points on ~1/3rd of the sensor?

How likely is it that we will see a nice new Canon 35 f/1.4 in the next 12 months?

Humorous EF 28-135 eBay description

I was checking the eBay prices for a used EF 28-135 f3.5-5.6 USM for a friend, and happened to notice this rather funny description blurb (automatically added to all the ads for this lens). Not sure if the writer was totally clueless or if this is a worse than usual google translation—I’ve bolded some of the more humorous parts.

Product Information

Compact and lightweight, the Canon EF USM F/3.5 lens is designed for digital cameras to capture bright panoramic photos. The focal length of this Canon IS lens automatically adjusts between 28 mm and 135 mm to shoot magnified images of an object at a minimum focusing distance of 0.5 m. With an aperture range of f/3.5 - 5.6, the Canon EF USM F/3.5 allows you to capture bright outdoor photos. The 18 to 75-degree angle coverage of this 28 mm lens facilitates standard format pictures. The Image stabilization feature helps to capture sharp images using the 28 mm lens even when there are jerks. With a construction of 16 elements in 12 groups, this Canon IS lens provides superior quality images. The 72 mm filter protects the Canon EF USM F/3.5 from dust and graze.

Hard to believe that Canon would sell such an innovative kit lens (automatically adjusting focal lengths and making a fixed focal length serve as a zoom) for so cheap… :)

Who Has Actually Owned Another Current System?

So who around here has bought and/or extensively used a non-canon system from the current generation of tech while maintaining a canon kit?

In the last three years, I have owned/own a 5D3x2, 70D, t5i, 6D, 7D, EOS M, Fuji x100s, xt1, xe2, Sony a7r, Casio ex-100, and a closet full of about 20k worth of lenses.

I am in fact, a Canon fan. But only because I actually enjoy using their products and the results they yield me. Which is precisely why I'm also a fan of other companies as some of them are also able to provide me with intriguing and very useful products with different yields.

The one thing I've always wanted to point out is that there are just way too many web junkies making opinions or statements based on things they've read from other people that have just read what other people on the interwebs have had to say about something. Parroting as it were. Or sometimes, parroting another parrot who may have very well been parroting someone else already.

We can sit here and measurebate, talk about other people's findings, and stroke ourselves all day over them. But who has.....walked the walk? Sound off!!
