Canon EOS 5DS & EOS 5DS R Samples By George Lepp

HTML:
<p>George Lepp and 3 other Canon Explorers of Light had the opportunity to head into the Nevada landscape and test out the brand new Canon EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R camera bodies while at the WPPI show in Las Vegas. The cameras were also mated with Canon’s latest EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II and EF 11-24mm f/4L lenses.</p>
<p>George’s first take on the camera:</p>
<blockquote><p>My response to the new camera was that it will be very important to those that can use the technology that is available. If you don’t need a camera with tremendous resolution for large prints or exceptionally high data for cropping, then this will be too much camera for you. It will tax your computer with 300 MB 16bit files. Even the 8bit files are 150 MB when open. The RAW files are approximately 60 MB in size. The dynamic range when working on the files in Canon’s DPP and Photoshop CC 2014 was quite good and pretty much matches my EOS 7D MKII.</p></blockquote>
<p>The EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R are not yet available for preorder and won’t be shipping until June 29, 2015.</p>

canon 6D weather damage

Hi guys

Ive just been to Iceland for a week

My new Canon 6d has taken a serious beating!

At first I had my camera covered with a weather cover, but the weather so extreme the first couple of days. The camera got soaked with a Sigma 24mm f1.8 lens on it , weather proof?

I know the weather sealing is 'splash proof' but the camera got completely soaked, seriously soaked two days in a row and maybe another time. To make matters worse, I spilled half a cup of coffey on it on the first day (clogging the rear whee l- it took a few days to unclog- but I could have cried)

I didnt do anything to dry it other than leave it out in a warm room in my hostels etc.

The wheel on the back and the selector switch and set button dont really work like they did before now, but I have a bigger problem, the camera is behaving strangely. sometimes when i switch it on, it dosnt turn on and i need to take the battery out then flick it on again to turn it on- when i use the third party battiers i bought for additions, it sometimes dosent even work!

help!!!

i bought a 3 year warranty, but im going to Norway next week on another photography mission and I really want to use my 6D

anyone with any help? that would be great

What to do? Lens kit simplification and improvement

So I'm on spring break with my daughter hanging our at home this week. I've been shooting a little and working with photos in Lightroom. I gazed upon my acquisition of many lenses over the last couple of years that started with a few low-grade non-L quality lens and slowly grew one at a time until I have what I have now (it's in my signature). I took a cursory glance at all the glass I've bought, tried and sold over the last 4 years since I got immersed in this new "hobby" and the list is long (http://thephotographerslens.com/gear/). What I'm thinking is...maybe it's time to sell off and simplify. Let me preface this whole thing to say that I recognize that in the grand scheme of things, I'm still a relative newbie here and appreciate the thought processes and wisdom of the collective here on this forum. To frame what I do: I shoot mostly sports (soccer) and some motorsports (auto racing)...a bit of portraiture and a fair bit of landscape and cityscape.

So here's what I'm thinking and I'd appreciate any advice or wisdom on whether or not it is sound:

I'm thinking of getting down to the holy trinity of zoom lenses at the expense of most all my primes I've worked to acquire over the last year. I would seek to buy the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II, the 24-70mm f/2.8 II and EITHER the 16-35mm f/2.8L or the 16-35 f/4L IS.

I would give up (sell) the following in pursuit of the above: 70-200mm f/4L IS, 70-300mm f/4-5.6L, 17-40mm f/4L, 24-105mm f/4 IS, 35mm f/2 IS, 100mm f/2.8L IS, 50mm f/1.4

My rationale is that I think I'd be more effective with few lenses rather than more. Also the quality of these zooms is highly regarded. I've subscribed to the notion (and it's only a notion) that one can zoom with their feet, but when I pack a bunch of zooms in my bag, it requires too much fore thought and effort and have the assurance that one can "get the shot" when it materializes. I am often frustrated with fumbling around with my bag and other lenses trying to swap. I absolutely do love the simplicity of shooting prime, the low-weight and my perception that the quality is better.

Apologies for the large quantity of words here. I just have to believe that others have been through this endeavor and I don't want to overlook some sound logic as to why I may be chasing something that lands me in the land of buyers (and sellers) remorse.

Many thanks in advance for those who take the time to digest this and respond.

Greg

Quiestions, Sir/ Madame and my dear Teachers

Dear Friends and All of my great teachers.
I read The Interview " http://www.dpreview.com/articles/5301008561/cp-2015-canon-interview-every-day-im-saying-speed-up "

And Do not understand that " Because the pixel pitch is so similar we’d expect the 5DS and 5DS R to give similar pixel-level image quality as the EOS 7D Mark II, and therefore even better image quality at common viewing sizes. So why is the maximum ISO limit so low?"

The Question is How can 50 MP Quality of Picture of Full Frame sensor of 5DS & R = 20.5 MP. Quality Picture of small sensor of 7D MK II ?
Do I read any wrong in that Interview ?
Thank you, Sir/ Madame.

Ads in User Text Is Not Acceptable

Discussion easily turns highly technical on this forum, and I like to put links in my own text to give examples when I'm making a point.

From now on that function is completely useless given that everyone will automatically ignore links in text, any websites linked to by users will now need to be in full URL form, which breaks up the flow of text.
Unfortunately there's already many years worth of posts that have this and that information is now scrambled.

From a communication standpoint, this is a step backward.

People need to make money, it's not my site, I understand, but surely there's a better way than interfering with the function of the forum.
I get confused when I see these things in blog posts on other websites, thinking that people use links they way I do and that it somehow contains relevant information. Basically I consider this spam in the same vein as computerized telemarketing, taking advantage of a system intended for communication with people and using that to basically steal mind share, only this is more of a click-bait nature.
If you enjoy getting random phone calls from travel agencies then I guess you'd think this is fine, otherwise don't put ads in our posts.

Canon 16-35mm f/4 Lens Cleaning Issues

Recently got a Canon 16-35mm f/4 Lens which I love. The only issue is that it seems a lot harder to clean when using a microfober cloth as opposed to my other lenses. I have a 24-70mm I, 70-200 f4 and 300mm f4 (UB Code) which all clean easily. When cleaning the 16-35, it seems like the dust sticks to the glass more. Do they use a different coating on that lens? Not a big issue as I can usually clean after a few extra minutes with combination rocket blower + cloth, its just new to me.

Also, any recommendation on cloths/cleaners would be great.

Any and all feedback is appreciated.

Thanks
Jason

Review: Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM

HTML:
Bryan at The-Digital-Picture has completed his thorough review of the brand new Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L. There is a lot of reading and information in this review, so it’s definitely worth the read if you’re on the fence about ordering this lens.</p>
<p>From the review:</p>
<blockquote><p>“…Three kinds of special lens coatings have been used on the 11-24: Subwavelength Coating (SWC), Air Sphere Coating (ASC) and Fluorine. Reducing flare and ghosting is the primary goal of these coatings and increasing contrast is the end result.”</p>
<p>“…If you can ease the wide end focal length requirement, the Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG II HSM Lens is available for 1/3 of the price. The Canon to delivers significantly better image quality even at f/11 and has max apertures up to 1 stop wider.”</p>
<p>“…I’ve had the Canon 8-15mm Fisheye in my kit since it was introduced and really like it, but I didn’t find myself pulling it out very often. The distorted look was the primary reason for that lack of use. So, while it is a great lens, I traded that one in toward the 11-24. I preordered the 11-24 within minutes of the announcement and it is now a permanent part of my kit. No regrets – I love this lens.”</p></blockquote>

More Hints of GH4 Competitor From Canon

HTML:
We’ve <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2015/02/whats-next-from-canon-nab-and-beyond/" target="_blank">reported a couple of times over the last few months</a> that Canon will likely announce a GH4 competitor at NAB next month in Las Vegas. We haven’t been able to find out what sort of lens mount the camera would have, but that it would be an interchangeable lens camera that is capable of shooting 4K video.</p>
<p>EOSHD noticed a mention of such a product that we overlooked in yesterdays <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2015/03/interview-masaya-maeda-of-canon-japan/" target="_blank">posted interview with Masaya Maeda</a>.</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>How are you addressing the demand for compact, 4K-capable cameras like Sony’s a7S and Panasonic’s GH4?</strong></p>
<p>Naturally I can’t give you details of our future plans but we are fully aware that such requirements exist in the market. We’re currently in the process of investigating, mainly to satisfy the needs of news media, and we have every intention of addressing this need in future products.</p></blockquote>

<p>You can see our previous rumors about a GH4 competitor from Canon <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2015/02/whats-next-from-canon-nab-and-beyond/" target="_blank">here</a> & <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/12/canon-to-target-the-gh4-with-new-dslr-type-cr2/" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>

Vibrancy of the RAW, Nikon and Sony are much more beautiful out of the camera???

Has anyone else noticed this? I don't think it has anything to do with the sensor detail, but rather the way images are processed in the camera itself.

I've been working on lots of different images lately, and I can tell for sure that for example D800 vs 5dIII, and it has nothing to do with resolution, the images from Nikon are "prettier:.

As a result, I have to make more conversions for Nikon, simply because detail get's lost in all that out of camera contrast. But, then once converted, there is much less work to be done in post production because files are already "more finished".

Have you noticed this?

Ultimate backpack?

Hello! I am fortunate enough to be able to quit my job next summer and travel for a year or two so I was wondering if I could get your opinions on some of the best camera bags, with hopefully additional space for a change of clothes and a laptop.

Any advice?

Also, I was hoping to somehow plant/hide some kind of GPS in my bag because, well, I don't mean to sound pessimistic, but I won't be surprised if I'm eventually mugged :)

Thanks!

Macro vs. Flat Field ?

Years ago in the film days, I was under the impression that a "macro" lens was synonymous with a "flat field" lens, which was of key importance when photographing art work and other flat objects. (EBay has several film-era Vivitar Flat Field 90-180 Macro Zooms, for instance.)

When I looked at the Canon web page describing macro lenses, the phrase "flat field" was not used. It led me to wonder if modern-day macro lenses are not flat field and if that characteristic was no longer a concern or design objective. With the advent of quality scanners, perhaps flat field lenses are just no longer needed.

So, for the stupid question of the day, do we still have (or even want) flat field lenses?

Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L II Mention [CR2]

HTML:
<p>A redesign of the EF 50mm f/1.2L is under way we’re told. The new design will include a floating element like the EF 85 f/1.2L II and get rid of the focus shift problem that many experience with the current version of the lens. The aim is also to make the lens lighter and speed up autofocus performance as well. You could also expect the latest and greatest lens coatings.</p>
<p>We’re told this lens will come after Canon’s next prime L, which is looking like a 35mm f/1.4 replacement. So we may not see this until very late in 2015 or next year.</p>

one border on print is cut off

Hello, I just got a Pixma Pro 10 yesterday and after several hours figuring stuff out (downloading the right software, etc) as my cd/dvd drive is not working. I finally was able to print a test print.

My issue is that after I made a print, on one side of the print the border is cut off, there's like only a hair's width of a border on the left side its like someone cut off the border on the one side with a pair of scissors :( I'm printing in Landscape orientation if that helps. So only three sides have the white border. I used Canon's Print Studio Pro as well as printing from Lightroom. Printing from Lightroom left a tiny bit more border on the left side but far from matching the opposite border.

Any help appreciated
