A Bunch of Landscapes

Instead of posting different threads, I will just use this one to share some of the landscape photos I have taken over the years. My style is to pioneer new shots in new locations and also new shots in locations that have been photographed to death. I can't afford to travel to fancy places, so I make the best of what I have in the area I live in.

Thanks for looking!

16-35 f/4L IS with EF 35 f/2 IS

For those who have owned both lenses, what can you say about the pair, specially the FL overlap, etc.?
Do you still keep both? Or did you sell one and kept the other?

I'm going FF sometime next month, so I'm selling the 70D and 10-22mm to fund a 6D and the excellent 16-35mm f/4 IS UWA.
I also wanted to sell the 35mm f/2 IS (to fund an 85mm, or a 50mm) since I'd have that FL covered by the UWA, but I haven't convinced myself yet as they're totally different lens with different purpose.

I wannna end up with a 6D; 16-35mm f/4L IS; either a 50mm or an 85mm -leaning towards the latter since I want to wait for the 50mm STM version. And of-course I'll retain the 70-200mm f/4L IS.

What do you guys think? Maybe I should also sell the 35mm now?

*New* Nissin DI700 Air + Air commander

Nissin had updated their Di700 with RF capabilities, when will Canon do the same with their ageing 430ex II. Here are links to Press release and other coverage from the phoblographer.

Upgrading firmware for 6D from 1.1.3

I've got a one year old 6D with factory installed 1.1.3 firmware.
Should I update to the latest?
Is there good reason? If there is something important that I am missing out on, then I want to, but don't want to risk one of these update horror stories if not much of anything happens.
About the only thing I wish for is faster AF. But, I dunno. I haven't really done much "fancy stuff". I mostly take stills in natural light.
Thanks for the advice.

Tethering lag

Can anyone tell me how much lag / latency you get and perceived frame rate (subjective of course) on a PC screen with tethering a camera?
I assume it depends largely on the camera. The 7D2 / 5DS have USB3 so these may produce the lowest lag and highest “frame rate”.
Also does the cameras setup effect the lag and frame rate? For example, would I see faster updates on the PC if I set the resolution to 1920 x 1280 vs 4320 x 2880.

Also when tethering, can the camera and PC menus be turnoff off so that you are left with just a live image of what the camera is seeing?

Sigma 30mm F1.4 Art slow focus in liveview.

Hello All:

I have been enjoying my Sigma 30mm f1.4 Art on my 70D for about half a year now. It produces wonderful photos and focus really fast through my viewfinder. However it focus super slow in the liveview. Lot of time it seems to hesitate/stuck for like 2~3 seconds before it even start to focus. I just got the USB dock and updated the firmware but it behaves the same. I researched online a bit and found some people mentioning just use continuous autofocus then shoot without trying to AF, but that sounds like a walkaround then an actual fix...

Just want to see if anybody is experiencing the same issue? Is this a common problem or I got the bad copy.I just got in touch with Gentec (Sigma's service partner in Canada) and they mentioned there might be an issue with the HSM motor, but I am not sure if they misunderstood my issue as the AF didn't work through viewfinder neither.

Thanks for the response in advance.

supply of 16-35 f4 is and decision on WA for travel

The 16-35/f4 has been sold out in Canada (or at least at all the outlets I know of) since approx Christmas.

Any idea how long Canon usually takes to rectify such things?

I am planning a road trip to New Mexico and Arizona this summer and need a wide angle. I'm debating between the 16-35/f4 and the 24/1.4. Obvious the zoom would be more practical for the trip, but I would probably get more use out of the prime the rest of the year.

Price is part of the consideration, but with the softness of the $CAD right now, ordering a 16-35 from out of the country would cost almost as much as buying the 24 locally.

Review: Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD

HTML:
<p>Dustin Abbott has completed his review of the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD lens. This is a brand new fast wide angle lens for full frame cameras from Tamron. I have yet to shoot with this lens, but it’s aggressively priced and looks to be a stellar performer.</p>
<p><strong>From Dustin</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>“Consider me impressed. Tamron has brought a lot of goodness to bear here, and this lens is a serious competitor for the best in its class. Some will find the inability to use traditional filters a deal-breaker, and I will confess this is my primary disappointment. I fully suspect that aftermarket square filter systems will fill that void, just as they have for the Nikkor and the Samyang/Rokinon 14mm f/2.8. The size will also be a concern for those who are counting the ounces for backpacking and/or travel. But if neither of those things spoil your interest, you will find a lens that is, in my mind, now the most compelling option available if you own a Canon and still very intriguing if you own a Nikon.” <a href="http://dustinabbott.net/2015/02/tamron-sp-15-30mm-f2-8-di-vc-usd-review/" target="_blank">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

Patent: Improved EF to EF-M Adaptor

HTML:
A new patent for an EF to EF-M adaptor has appeared. It looks like the new adaptor will have improved AF speed with EF lenses mounted. As many of you know, the current adaptor is pretty sluggish in that regard.</p>
<p>The patent makes a point of saying there will be improved performance for video and liveview. Could the video improvement be for dual pixel AF? Could this patent be related to the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2015/02/whats-next-from-canon-nab-and-beyond/" target="_blank">GH4 competitor we’ve been told would launch at NAB</a>?</p>

Canon Pro-1 Question

Hi all,

I've had my Pro-1 for nearly a year. I had a few questions. Firstly the prints I make look nothing like those taken on my camera. The colours are far too dark and I have to manually change brightness and saturations on every image prior to printing. This is taking a lot of trial and error and will be costly inks wise. Any ideas or recommendations to fix this?

Secondly is ink levels. For a long time it's said all inks have nearly run out. It warned that inks might run out mid print...and yet I've managed to print 10+ A3's with these warnings on. I'm wondering if the sensors for the ink levels are broken?

Finally, I want to use the printer to make art prints of drawings i've done. Can someone recommend a matte and high quality paper compatible with my printer for art prints?

Canon Patent for EF-EF-M Adapter with Improved Auto-Focus Speed

http://www.canonwatch.com/canon-patent-for-ef-ef-m-adapter-with-improved-auto-focus-speed/

"Egami (translated) spotted what could be Canon’s best move to push their mirrorless cameras. A new EF-EF-M adapter that should deliver better AF speed when using EF and EF-S lenses. While the AF performance of Canon’s new EOS M3 is excellent with the native EF-M lenses, AF performance is limited when using EF lenses via the currently available adapter. If Canon puts such an adapter on the market it would a huge selling point for the EOS M3. Access to Canon’s extended lens lune-up, and same AF performance as with native lenses!"

Good news for all M3 interested photographers....

5Ds or possible alternatives?

Hi

I am considering the 5Ds but before I pull the trigger I would like make sure that I am not missing anything. Of course, we all know that the 5Ds is only announced so we can not compare IQ and DR to other cameras. But assuming it lives up to reasonable expections here are my thoughts.

Do this make sense?

Alternatives: Canon 5Ds (5DsR), Sony A7R (or mark II if it comes out), and Nikon 810.

Image quality of the Sony and Nikon is excellent as is the DR. Canon will top these in sensor size, not sure if IQ or DR will match Sony / Nikon. I suspect that the IQ will be close, if not surpass Nikon / Sony, DR is unclear.

Lens. This is were it gets touchy. For the most part I think Canon glass is as good as Nikon glass. Canon 16-35 F4 is nearly as good as the Nikon 14-24. Canon 11-24 is unknown but, based upon price, is expected to be great.

24-70 edges goes to Canon.
TS - Canon wins.
70-200 F2.8 edge goes to Canon.
Macro - call it a tie (perhap edge to Nikon).

Unlike a year ago, Canon has caught up, especially in the WA/UWA glass.

With Nikon need to buy separate glass (extra cost), with Canon and Sony can used Canon lens (with adapter in the case of Sony - slow AF. For WA AF is not as important.

1st choice is Canon 5Ds if IQ and DR match Nikon/Sony.
Otherwise Sony A7R. Poor AF but uses Canon lens.
Nikon system is too expensive (will need to duplicate current lens), if I only carry 1 body, no backup. Body is different than body I use on long glass.

Too early to call 5Ds and IQ/DR. Hopefully Canon will make a great camera.
11-24 - too early to call. Based upon price should be a world class lens.

Canon 7D Mark II Metering / Extreme Overexposure Issue

Hi, I have a brand new 7D Mark II and I'm experiencing intermittent metering issues. For example, I will be shooting just fine in aperture priority in a normal outdoors environment, say at F4.0 at 1/250 sec at 400 ISO, and then all of a sudden, the camera will show that it needs a 30 second exposure (on the LCD screen on the top of the camera). However, if I switch to live view, the screen on the back of the camera will show a normal 1/250 sec exposure. When I switch off the live view, the top LCD screen will go back to showing some ridiculously long exposure time.

Changing shooting modes (TV/Manual, etc.), metering modes, AF modes, etc. seem to have no effect on on correcting the crazy long exposure time. However, after a minute or so, things will go back to normal.

Has anyone else experienced this phenomenon? Thanks for advance for your input.
