Informal comparison of old and new 100-400 + 500 V.1

Tripod mounted, ISO 160, f/5.6 @ 1/500. Live View focus with MLU on 7D MK II.
No guarantees but they are sort of interesting. There will be some denial involved.
Cropped and sharpened using USM 500/.9/1
I'll be trying some other tests later.

ENELOOP ????

Dear teachers and dear friends.
Yes, After I open the great link " Panasonic/ Eneloop" from Our friend Mr. Velo Steve, and the question are come to my low brain.
The question , Sir/ Madam :
Eneloop = Long time ago made by Sanyo ( Until ??), Now Made by Panasinic, which made 3 level of Eneloop.
1) Eneloop ( Standard) = 1,.2 V., 2000 mAh = 2100 Life Cycle.
2) Eneloop Lite = 1.2 V., 1000 mAh, 3000 Life Cycles.
3) Eneveloop PRO, = 1.2V., 2550 mAh., = Only 500 Life Cycle.

Yes I have Sanyo/ Eneloop 36 AA. for 7-8 years and love them, use them ( Rotate Them) with out fail, But These Sanyo Eneloop = 1900 mAh---After 7-8 Years usage = That might be the end of Life Soon, Although I Check in after recharge battery complete = 1.5 V. (by slow charger unit).
Now The question are, After the great ones die, Which Kind/ Level of New Eneloop that I should buy ?
The Standard, Lite or PRO Type of Eneloop ??
= For my dear 4 Canon Flashes 550 EX, 580 EX, 580 EX II and 430 EX II+ 3 youngnuo yn565exii

Thanks you, Sir/ Madam

The leaked price is apparently $1499, which makes it a pretty interesting option if they've kept the lens sharp at 15mm f/2.8.

Best backpack for 5D with grip

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this...feel free to move it mods.

I have a 5d II with battery grip and 3 lenses (35L, 135L, 24-105L) and a 580ex II flash. I'm looking for a good backpack that will hold my camera gear WITH the battery grip. I've tried a few backpacks, to include an InCase, Jansport and Vanguard at a local store and they all work great except for the camera compartment holding a battery grip. I currently am using a Timbuk2 Snoop messenger bag but want a backpack instead of a messenger style bag. Thanks in advance.

A-DEP with touch screen

I never used the A-DEP mode on my T1i, but I was thinking it might be a good mode with a touch screen in live view. I can invision tapping on the subjects I want in focus on the screen and the camera selecting the largest aperture that could keep them all in focus. I wouldn't mind A-DEP being back on the mode dial if it could do that.

430ex2 on 5d3 fires before first curtain

Hallo to everybody, may I introduce myself: long time reader, first time poster, no native speaker. using canon digital since g3, eos 100 before, taking pictures since 1981.

My 2,5 years old 430ex2 spontaneously started to fire before first curtain today (on eos 5d3). No apparent reason, no impact, fresh batteries.
I can actually see the flash through the viewfinder before mirror release. this does not change with 2nd curtain sync. Reset of all settings did not improve the situation.

I think it always fires 1/1, but there is absolutely no effect of flash apparent on the pictures.
also pre-flash is not a strobe anymore.
I can reproduce this on my old 40d.
hooking up to my elinchrome skyport though, it syncs alright.

Is this a known issue in any way? I can not even explain to myself how it should work.

Is there an easy cure? Is it worth sending it in for repair?

Thank you.

Review: Canon EF 24-105 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

HTML:
<p>Bryan at the-digital-picture has completed his review of the brand new Canon EF 24-105 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens.</p>
<p><strong>From TDP

</strong><em>“As it stands, the Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens is a nice lens overall. The size and weight of this lens are easy to handle for long periods of time and the lens shape is comfortable to use. For a moderate price, the 24-105 STM covers the full frame image circle with very good image quality. The modern STM AF system gets the job done nicely and the image stabilization system makes sure that camera motion blur is not detracting from that image quality. This is a good value lens.” …. </em><strong><a href="http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-24-105mm-f-3.5-5.6-IS-STM-Lens.aspx" target="_blank">Read the full review</a></strong></p>

<p><strong><span style="color: #ff0000;">c</span>r</strong></p>

I'm getting impatient for the new 5D 4.

Ugh.

I am new here and have only a Powershot G6 which is a decade old now...

I am about to buy my first FF DSLR and I must admit I am pretty overwhelmed at the whole Nikon vs Canon thing and yet despite many saying to go with Nikon, I really would like to go with Canon but I don't really fancy forking out 2K euros on a camera that is largely considered old tech, despite the fact I would be over the moon to have such a camera.

I am thinking of holding out until Canon announce the 5D Mark IV but at this point, March announcement (or any announcement) seems to be rumour only.

I have no DSLR and yet I do not want to spend on a body like the 700D, 70D, 7D, 6D etc etc to get started, I just don't want to spend 500-1k on a camera I will want to upgrade from in a years time, so I want to go full frame and buy the best camera I can afford and right now I am very tempted to go either Nikon D810 or D750 but I would much rather wait for the new Canon but what the heck is going on with them? No Photokina other than the 7D 2 and despite the run up to Christmas, still no official announcement on a new FF from Canon.

I will have the money next week and I just do not know if I will be able to hold out for the new 5D, sure, it may only be a few months away but the chances are it will not ship until June or something ridiculous and I probably would not get my hands on one until summer.

Should I just go for the 5D Mark lll and be done with it?

I don't like how Nikon seem to be pushing out a new camera every other week (OK, maybe not that many) but their camera's look ugly and I have a problem with the green tint to their images, also I do not like that their menu systems are hard to learn and the D810 has no custom banks, that sucks... but what I DO like is that they have better DR and are sharper, seemingly the D750 is a better camera than the 5D Mark lll now so it kinda makes little sense to plonk 2k on a camera that is now considered by many to be old.

Come on Canon, I have the money next week and yet I am forced to hang onto it until I either cave and go Nikon or buy a 5D Mark lll and be satisfied with my choice... personally, I think I would rather go Nikon and get a good body rather than pay that much money for the 5D Mark lll...

Is there anyone else in this situation? Whilst Nikon, Sony and Fuji are putting out more and more great cameras, still there is nothing for the Canon user other than the 7D Mark ll which doesn't appeal to me because I want to go full frame and I won't be shooting sports or wildlife anyway.

The wait is getting old, even an official announcement at this point would probably be enough for me to hang on but right now the wait is getting really old and I am not sure if I even want to wait much longer although I do think that Canon will have to release a seriously kick ass camera to stay in the game what with what Nikon and Sony are putting out there these days...

Come on Canon, where are you?

They must be losing a shed load of business to the competition right now.

High Megapixel Camera Coming in 2015 [CR3]

HTML:
<p>We have confirmed that a high megapixel camera is coming from Canon in 2015 and it will be around 50mp. The camera will not be an EOS-1 style body, so don’t expect the price to be above $4000.</p>
<p>We have yet to confirm when in 2015 the camera is coming, as the exact date may be unknown to Canon at the time of writing this.</p>
<p>More to come once more is confirmed.</p>

40-50mm for a7r

Hello All, just after some opinion/advice for my a7r, I'm looking for a 40-50mm lens with a fast aperture around 1.4 it can be an old or new lens since I will only be using it in manual focus with the appropriate adapter so any mount will be ok just want something that's not to expensive but reasonably sharp especially wide open, any suggestions? Even a vintage lens, but there's so many I'm not sure which one to get :-\ thanks...

Vertical curtain velocity

I was thinkig about real velocity of shutter curtain. I guess that vertial curtain velocity does not change and changes just timing of second curtain release. It means that slot between curtains travels at constant speed, but width of slot depends on shutter speed set up. The amount of light reaching the sensor is the same as shutter would have been fully opened for a very short time, e. g. 1/8000 s. Are my thoughts correct? If yes, how fast the curtain could travel?

Just picked up a 7D

I've been looking at getting a new camera for ages to replace my Olympus E-410, and to complement my EOS-M. I went into my local Suning electronics store and saw that they had the original 7D on special offer, along with the EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 and a free bag, so I jumped on it there and then. I must say, it's a massive leap from what I've been using, and the price was just right (1000RMB cheaper than the 70D). I'm really looking forward to taking it out, since my son's kindergarten has a Christmas performance next week.

Now, I just need to save up for some L glass! What would you guys suggest, with my interest being mainly portraits. 70-200? 135 prime? I'm also looking into getting the battery grip for it. I had a play with the 1DX in the Canon store in Hong Kong (Times Square) last week, and loved the size and weight of it.

Cheers,
Malcolm

Field Report on the New Canon 100-400mm f/4.5 – f/5.6 USM II-Scott Kelby

Hi guys,

I came across this article and I found it interesting:
http://scottkelby.com/2014/field-report-on-the-new-canon-100-400mm-f4-5-f5-6-usm-ii/

"Q. Who is this designed for lens for?
A. I’d say it’s really designed for daytime sports photographer and for wildlife photographers, but of course it will take a picture of whatever you aim it at, so you’ll see everybody from wedding photographers to portrait photographers using this same lens, especially at its size/weight and price..."

The problem is that quite often wildlife is most active at dusk or dawn. It isn`t unusual to have to take photos at games late afternoon or in the evening so maybe it`s a good idea to rent it before actually pulling the trigger.
What do you think?
Cheers:)

Having read of declining sales of SLR, MILC or P&S makes me wonder if photo hobbyists (those who do not derive primary, majority or significant part of income from photography) are leaving their bigger & dedicated cameras at home and just going "commando" with a smartphone.

Does not matter whether it be iPhone, Android or Windows (notice I did not mention Blackberry).

Lighting setup for studio portraits

I have three 600EX-RTs, and I recently received a Wafer 100 softbox for free from a very generous CR member. He included a Speedotron adapter. Now I am trying to decide whether I should get a Speedlite adapter (Bower + L bracket thingy) and use one Speedlite in it, or should I either get a Speedotron or get a Alienbee 800 and the corresponding adapter? If I should get a monolight then what are the pros and cons of getting a Speedotron? I see a bunch of them for <$ 300 on eBay- are these good deals?
e.g.,
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Speedotron-Brown-Line-400-W-2-M90-Heads-1-MWR3-head-ans-extras-w-Case-/181590427933?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a47a2091d

The primary use will be as a key light for portraits, but I am not sure if one 600 will be strong enough to pass through the diffuser and provide a good key. I am loathe to gang up 600s because that reduces my flexibility to use a secondary light, hair light etc.
Any advice?
Thanks in advance!
