Rome - Street Candids

Currently in Rome for a week with Mrs Petach and some friends. We have a lovely apartment, close to shops and bars/restaurants about 1k from the Cathedral of Rome (St John/StGiovanni)

Couldn’t decide which camera to take….but BA’s generous 21 kilo hand baggage allowance decided for me. They all came!

The 6d with 85mm L f/1.2 & 70-300L, The GXR with 21mm Zeiss and a Panny FZ200 Bridge.

The Panny has done really well, especially for street work and scenics. I am pleased with it and it is very versatile at 24mm-600mm equivalent zoom AND f/2.8 all the way through. In fact, I have enough confidence in it to make it the only one to take if room is tight.

A couple of 6d 70/300L shots here

DO you correct lens vignetting when sot wide open??

Here's a fun question for everyone! Landscapes I assume most of us will correct in post for natural light falloff, however, most landscapes are shot stopped down and don't really require much if any at all. But with portraiture, I have found myself falling in love with the natural lens vignetting of such primes as the Sigma 35mm & 50mm ART wide open at 1.4 and the vastly under appreciated Canon 135mm 2.0 L. I'm curious to see how other folks handle natural light roll off on these and comparable prime given their own shooting situations!

Sigma 150-600 Sport vs Tamron 150-600mm

Lenstip, bless them, have done the first review of the Sigma 150-600mm sport. The MTFs are very impressive, and beat the Tamron. But it is a monster, heavier than the Canon 300/2.8 II + 2xTC. It weighs 2860g vs 1951 of Tamron. It is 120 x 290.2mm vs 105.6 x 257.8mm. (The 300/2.8 II is 128 x 248mm, 2350g)

It's a better lens than the Tamron but it is too large and heavy for me as it would be easier to carry and pack the admittedly much more expensive 300/2.8. Nevertheless, a very impressive lens.

Modular DSLR Coming from Canon? [CR2]

HTML:
<p>We’re told that Canon will introduce a brand new DSLR model some time in 2015 that will be somewhat modular. All we were told is that the viewfinder will be interchangeable, as well as “other parts of the camera”. We’re trying to find out what else would be removable on a DSLR.</p>
<p>This camera will be video focused, but a competent stills shooter as well. It sounds like it could be a part of the Cinema EOS line and I would suspect it would appear at NAB in April, 2015.</p>

Patent: Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II

HTML:
<p>A new patent for an EF 35mm f/1.4L II has appeared. We haven’t seen a new patent for this optical formula in quite some time.  I recently received a claim that we’ll see such a lens in Q1 of 2015, but I haven’t been able to confirm that information.</p>

Canon Refurb Store

I'm sure this has been discussed in great detail over the years but hoping for some feedback here.

Any reason NOT to buy refurb from canon? I frequently buy second hand from private sellers, but I am assuming that Refurbs are damaged equipment that was fixed. Is it just better to spend a little more for brand spanking new? How about a benefit of refurb (other than price)?

Thanks.

Lens compatibility with firmware upgrade

I bought a 7D with an old firmware. It has a Tamron 2.8 VC lens. Worked well till i updated the firmware. Now whenever i take a shot, it shows error that body is not communicating with lens and that i should clean contacts. (I did clean it anyways) I wish to revert to that old firmware, and not able to do so. I can move forward and not backward.. (With exception of 2.0.5 to 2.0.3)

On that note, can anyone help and guide if there is any way to force downgrade to 1.2.5? Please help..

Canon 600EX-RT and Sekonic L-478DR LiteMaster Pro

I am considering getting a light meter, to measure and control my set of 600EX-RT flashes manually. One required function would be the ability to fire off the flashes remotely from the light meter. I know that the Sekonic 478 can do that with PocketWizard, but does anyone know if it can be set up to work directly with the radio control in the 600 speedlite?

If the Seconic does not work, are there other alternatives that will?

10 Reasons Why a Pro Photographer Left Nikon and started shooting with Sony

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wM_5nROeaw

i have to say sony is growing momentum even in my surroundings.

peope who had a DSLR in the past switching to the A7 and even more buying a A6000 or A5100.
i have A6000 myself and i can see why people love it.

it´s so much more fun walking and traveling with the small A6000.
since i have the A6000 my canon DSLRs stay at home for most short trips.

i guess sony will have a loyal customer in me and i will buy the A7000 too when it´s releaed.
giving the A6000 to my girlfriend.

Broncolor Derivative

I recently encountered an old pack/heads system at a camera show that used Broncolor sockets for attaching the heads to the pack. The owner told me that it was made in France a while ago. I can't remember the name of the manufacturer. In my head it starts with "Godo...", but all I can think of is Godox which clearly isn't French and hasn't made Broncolor mount stuff. The pack was black and had red trims where you would normally find light blue on original Broncolor equipment.

Anyone knows what manufacturer I'm talking about?

Thanks

Shooting Full Body White Backgrounds

So here's the rub; I'm shooting some 'on site' full body, full white-out backgrounds. I'm researching and testing some lighting setups; and wanted to know if anyone had any tips or tricks for this sort of thing. I have done plenty of corporate headshots before, but not full body white-bg.

At my disposal are plenty of light stands and umbrellas/softboxes. I have 3 Canon 600 speedlites. I also have two continuous CFLs if necessary.

I'd like to do as little post-processing as possible, so I plan to place subjects 6-10 feet away from wall, and really blow it out. We have quite a lot of space to work with.

Cheers to all. I'm assuming we'll be doing this kind of look

Canon 7D Mark II Owners first thoughts

This time tomorrow (5pm GMT) I will have the 7D Mark II in my hands, I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread for 7D Mark II owners (okay I am starting this to distract myself from the wait as well).

What do you like? What do you dislike?
What would you add or subtract?
What will be your primary use for the camera?
Any photographic examples?
Or if you wish a picture of you with your 7D Mark II

;D

More EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS II Talk [CR2]

HTML:
<p>A few more people have confirmed that select Canon pros around the globe are testing the new EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS II. Also being confirmed is that the lens resembles the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS in its design; with the zoom ring being at the front element side of the lens, and the focus ring near the camera mount. We were also told that the new lens is “quite a bit smaller than the current iteration”, although this could be subjective depending on the photographer. If it is actually smaller, then I expect the front of the lens will be telescopic like the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS.</p>
<p>Availability will be at the end of the November according to one source. There has been no mention of pricing or filter size for the new lens.</p>
<p>More to come…</p>

Wedding - Kat and James

Oo a wedding forum,

On Saturday I photographed a friend's wedding, I'm not a wedding photographer - but they saw a few photos I took as an 'uncle bob' at another friend's wedding and pressured me into it :)

I have not processed all the images yet, but here's a small sample

Should I buy a 1dx

Hi there,

Newbie here so apologies if this has already been asked before! Anyway, I've been using a 5d III for a year now and am looking to step up a gear tot eh 1DX. However, this is going to be a huge one time investment and I don't want to get one then find out that the successor will be on the market in a few months. Do folks think it's better to hold off time maybe Easter?

Cheers,
Tim
