"Cello" Short Film Shot With the Canon EOS 7D Mark II

HTML:
<p>Canon USA has posted a short film shot entirely with the Canon EOS 7D Mark II and a bunch of different Canon EF and EF-S lenses.</p>
<p>There’s one feature pointed out by The Digital Picture that looks to be a great feature for videographers:</p>
<p><em>“While Movie Servo AF isn’t exactly new, the EOS 7D Mark II brings a very important feature to the party – the ability to customize focus speed and responsiveness while shooting video. Take a look at the focus pull at the 2:13 mark; it’s absolutely beautiful. The ability to slow down the camera’s focus transition allowed for a very natural-looking focus pull.”</em></p>

How to differentiate crop vs. FF

I have been involved in a number of crop vs. FF discussions lately. I thought I had the arguments for and against well set. But, based on these discussions, I´m not so sure anymore.

What I´d like your views on are what you see as the key arguments for and against the two sensor formats are from your perspective.

PS! I know DR is one, but please avoid turning this into a for/against more DR thread.

Electronics vs Old Fashioned Camera Equipment companies

Just watched a (long) video on why one pro moved from Nikon to Sony mirrorless that was just posted on Sony Rumors - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wM_5nROeaw

While some people will wrangle over dynamic range of this sensor vs that, I'm MUCH more interested in how large scale technology integration can further enable creativity. The level of integration is catching my attention. Seriously.

I think I see the difference in product development between an electronics company (Sony) and the traditional camera gear manufacturers (Nikon/Canon). Electronics companies can if they understand their customers and technologies take a broader view of the overall market where Nikon/Canon have their perceived self interests to protect. I think we're finally moving away from single-purpose photographic devices and have landed *smack* in the middle of a whole new level of image creation, management, and distribution.

Innovation vs market protection. I think it's that simple. Kudos to Sony.

Maybe I'll jump out of Canon afterall...

Stacking drop-in filters?

Lately I've been shooting motorsports with my 200 f/2. I've found that, to get the look I want, I need to use a polarizer (to manage glare) and a slow shutter speed (for motion blur of the background and spinning wheels).

So, what I want is both a CPL and an ND filter.

The problem is, there doesn't appear to be room in the slot for drop in filters to stack filters. And the Canon drop in CPL doesn't have threads to hold another filter anyway.

Does anyone know of a solution to achieve both polarizing filtering and additional ND filtering in a Canon super-tele?

Thanks,
Jeff

Buying 2nd hand 70D, what to check?

Hi Guys,

I am buying 2nd hand 70D,

Was wondering what do I have to check by myself & will (usually) official country dealer willing to check the condition of the camera for me?

Moreover, how to check if the camera is original and not some chinese knockoffs (if any)?

Its just that I found some websites in Indonesia selling brand new 70d kit for approx. USD200, which doesnt make sense.

Thanks

Flash equipment for Portraits & Events

Hi Guys
I am planning on shooting business events and portraits at my customers' offices. I don't have my own flash equiment yet. Therefore I'm researching what I should buy. I have been reading about a lot of off brand flashes on flashhavoc.com. I'm leaning towards buying a Yongnuo flash and a Gary Fong Lightsphere Cloud. However I'm not sure which brand for the flash I should choose.

I was thinking about waiting for the Yongnuo 600EX-RT since it is supposed to be released this month.

At first I would like to buy one flash and a good diffusor. Later on I'm going to buy more equiment as needed. I'm mostly using manual focus lenses but I'm planning on buying more AF lenses in the future.

Can you recommend a flash for those use cases? What are the real world problems and advantages with the various flash manufacturers?

SMC Takumar Lenses

I'm shocked there isn't a place for these already! I hope to build up a fair collection of these eventually, but today I got my first, an SMC Takumar 35mm f/3.5 lens with an M42 mount. I took immediately went to play in the yard and picked up these images. I used a 12mm macro extension tube to bring my focus distance to about 6".

G1X-II's larger sensor w/ EVF or newer G7X with higher MP?

I'm looking for a small(ish) traveling camera. I will also buy a water-tight casing for scuba photography which is available for either camera.

Should I get the G1X Mark II or the new G7X. I'm looking for the highest IQ and greatest ability for low light possible between these two cameras. The size difference between them is not that important to me.

Here is my comparison of what is important:
G1X-II: 1.5" sensor @ 12 MP, optional EVF, hot boot for external flash, and nice grip
G7X: 1" sensor @ 20 MP, no possible EVF, no possible external flash and no grip

Again, I'm looking for the highest IQ and best low light pix since I'm used to what my 5D3 can produce.

Cheers

EOS 7D mk2 or 5D mk3

Had to start this as I didn't want to hijack LesC's post about the 6D and 7DII.
I have reviewed my photography over the past few years and I seem to have a bit of everything (portraits, landscape, street, night, quite a bit of theatre [where it's allowed], with some static birds, BIF, and airshows).
As you can imagine, I am in a quandary about this.
I can get a 7DII with the canon 15-85 lens for the same price as a 5DIII with the 24-105L, which doesn't help the decision-making process.

The birds and airshows don't figure as highly in my repertoire as the other stuff, but I don't want to hamstring myself by getting a camera which will not make a good stab at everything.

I have read extensively about the two cameras, and I'm struggling to find the killer feature which will inform my decision. Each have their own benefits and drawbacks, but I can't find the one feature which will make the decision for me.
Is there significantly better IQ from the 5DIII over the 7DII? Will I miss the reach that the 7DII will give over the 5DIII (I can get round that a bit by using a TC).

I think it will come down to IQ (not exceptionally bothered about DR, so no "neither of them has an EXMOR sensor", please), but I've not found anything which seems to say one way or the other.

I don't remember being this indecisive, but I'm not sure. ;)

Anyone got any thoughts which might assist someone who has buyers remorse before actually buying anything? :-\

Versatile macro-ish walkaround zoom for dad

Xmas is coming soonish and I want to buy my father a new lens. Currently he uses my old Rebel with kit lens, so anything would be an improvement. At over 80 he would have trouble changing lenses so a nice big range would be good. He also likes taking photos of small critters so some degree of macro is needed. IQ is not a major priority, versatility and usability (together with weight and cost, as well as passable AF speed) is. Saw the Tamron - Aspherical [IF] MACRO AF 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD for 140 pounds on Amazon UK which looks ideal. Any thoughts?

Superbikes from Silverstone

Hi All,

4th time I've ever shot bikes, here's a selection of the results from the slightly difficult conditions at Silverstone.

All from spectator areas through the good'ol catch fencing with a 5d iii and the 400mm f5.6, I'd welcome your feedback and opinions.

It seems a few people doubt the 5D iii's ability to handle sports, what do you think?

Samsung NX-1 samples - Comparisons Sony A77II/Nikon D750

digitalversus put up some sample comparisons of a pre-production NX-1, the Sony A77II, and the Nikon D750 as a guessing game. The answers are on the french language version of the site:

http://www.lesnumeriques.com/samsung-nx1-sony-a77ii-nikon-d750-votre-prefere-est-coreen-n36235.html

From the samples given, the BSI sensor looks pretty good. Better than the Sony crop, at least.

RAW files are here, although I couldn't open them in ACR, of course. Maybe someone with one of those weird RAW converters I'm not going to bother to download and install can open them?

Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III VC Review (EOS M and NEX)

Here is a new review of the Tamron 18-200 VC for mirrorless bodies. I was pretty impressed with this lens other than the fact that it is a bit on the large side for the tiny bodies it is mounting too. I’ve done both a written review:

http://dustinabbott.net/2014/10/tamron-18-200mm-vc-review/

A video review:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExA7Nlza7Gk

And a lens image gallery with some samples/full size images for download:

http://dustinabbott.net/2014/10/tamron-18-200vc-lens-gallery/

For those of you with either an M or a NEX, this is a pretty compelling choice because the IQ is very good. It makes for a really convenient all in one package or something to bring along to compliment a more focused DSLR setup (with primes, etc...)

More Canon Lens Mentions [CR2]

HTML:
<p>We’ve received a couple of more confirmations from people that the EF 11-24 f/4L we <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/08/canon-ef-11-24-f2-8l-coming-cr1/" target="_blank">first reported back in August</a> is in fact legit. The speculation on pricing for the EF 11-24 f/4L seems to be consistent across the board at around $3000 USD.</p>
<div id="attachment_17380" style="width: 510px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/canon1124.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-17380" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/canon1124.jpg" alt="EF 11-24 f/4L" width="500" height="440" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">EF 11-24 f/4L</p></div>
<p>The following information is [CR1]. A separate person has told us that the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS II was supposed to be announced at Photokina but was delayed, no reason for the delay was given. <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/09/canon-confirms-replacement-of-100-400-coming-more-do-ef-m-lenses/" target="_blank">Canon themselves have come out and said that a replacement is coming</a>, of course they didn’t specify when. We’re told to expect an announcement in November, with availability coming in December of this year. We’re not holding our breath on this one, as the 100-400 replacement has haunted us for quite some time now.</p>
<p>More to come</p>
