Strange effect using 5D3 and 16-35 f/2.8L II

Hi,
just wondering about how this happened?

See the strange effect that the leaves have in the middle where the blue sky is the background, like chromatic aberation, but in light Blue I wasn't shooting into the sun, but it was a very bright day, taken late afternoon.

I couldn't get rid of it in LR due to parts of the sky having the same Blue colour.

Cheers Brian

Dynamic Range - Try it for yourself, conclude for yourself: 5D III vs. A7r

I received my A7r rental from LensRentals today. I've been working, but I took a few minutes to snap some quick shots of my living room, with the goal of preserving the highlights of the bright sunlit outdoors in the front windows. To do that, I had to underexpose the foreground well below the levels that they appeared it my eyes.

I did not try to make any explicit exposure choices here. The goal was simply to expose for the highlights. These were shot from the hip, no tripod, no real planning. The goal was just to create a couple exposures with highlight preservation in mind, and see how the shadows handled some major pushing. I'll leave it up to each person to draw their own conclusions. I have provided a link to the raw files, so you can all download them, play with them yourself, and verify (or refute, if you prefer) the various claims made about DR.

Here are the original exposures:

Here are the exposures lifted to generally mirror what the room looked like to my bare eyes (+4EV, -100 Highlights):

Just to see how far I could push things, here a couple more versions, not particularly "realistic", but still a good demonstration of what's possible and how the raw data reacts. No interpretation of the data needed here...5D III totally falls apart. A7r...noisy...but manageable.

Maximum push (+5EV, -100 Highlights, -100 Whites, +50 Shadows):

ETTR? Yup. Too much. On both cameras.

Finally got a chance to process one of the sets of images I got with the A7r and 5D III. This particular set of images I did not really expect to show any difference, however I think the subtleties and small push here might actually be best. I saw this rock with a patchwork of different kinds of mosses, frames in the spotty sunlight shining through some pine trees. I thought the light and shadow made for a decent example of DR.

Canon 600mm f/4L IS II USM Purchase

My next lens is going to be the Canon 600mm f/4L IS II USM. I am an amateur and my photography is strictly for fun (lots of kids, sporting events, school trips, animals, charitable organizations). I could buy the lens today or buy it next March - I will enjoy it once I get it but I am in no rush. If the price stays the same, I would rather buy it today. If I could save $500 or $1,000 - I would rather wait...

With the recent price drop of many of the Canon lenses, I am curious if canon will have a rebate / special deal on this lens in the next six months? Maybe a Black Friday rebate? I have not followed Canon's historical approach to pricing so I would really appreciate anyone thoughts...

Have a GREAT week and thanks to everyone who makes this forum so fun to follow!

Square or cross shaped sensors

Moving this topic from another thread since it was off topic.

Slyham said:
This conversation brings up a question I have had for a while. Why not have a square or a cross shaped sensor?

Let me explain. Say you are camping near a lake. First you take a picture of the lake during a sunrise. You set the camera to landscape at 16:9, or whatever you want, and only the pixels in that ratio is used in taking the shot. Next your child wakes up and is sticking her head out the tent door. So you switch to portrait 4:5 and you can hold the camera in the same comfortable position as you do in landscape and take the picture. The day goes on with different shots with different ratios.

Obviously this would only work with a mirrorless camera and you could not have a lens hood with pedals.

I think some of the advantages would be you get to hold the camera "normally" for portrait shots, you only use the pixels you want (thus keeping the size of files to a minimum), there is less cropping in post, etc.

What do you all think? Stupid idea or does it have some merit?

The Olympus OM-D EM-1 mirrorless camera does not have a square or cross-shaped sensor, of course, but it does basically what you want (including portrait 3:4 without rotating the camera). If you shoot RAW, it will use all the pixels of its entire 4:3 sensor image, but JPGs are cropped as you specify.

So, yes, I would say your idea has merit!

As far as I remember, there was a rumor inventive Sony were to release a square sensor ff camera. And it makes sense, after all the lens is round so you're essentially throwing away potential good pixels. The only idea I have that prevents this is that current lenses are qc-tuned for max. 3:2 and the glass might not be up for a 1:1 task? But this is ot, maybe you should open a new thread for this.

Genius. I want to take portrait photos without removing my baseball cap. That's got to be worth a few grand more.

Speedlites - How many are enough?

Yeah, a question with no definite answer, but yet....

I have now sold two of my studio strobes (elinchrom), and am about to sell the other two I have. What I have left is my three 600ex rt and a st-e3. I am thinking about aquiring another three speedlites, to allow me the flexibility of having enough light for most situations that I will encounter as an amateur (with the occasional paid photogig). My main use will be a studio setup, but I would also like the opportunity to do HSS.

Any thoughts?

More Talk of an October Announcement of a DSLR [CR1]

HTML:

There has been a lot of chatter about the possibility of Canon announcing a high megapixel DSLR some time in October. I have a feeling most of this is rooted in the FM post from a little ago. We continue to receive emails stating the camera is coming and the camera isn’t coming. So for now, I have nothing that shows an imminent announcement.

If something does come in October, I have a feeling it will be a development announcement or a camera that won’t ship for a long while. There seems to be a growing concern that people are tired of waiting for Canon to release a high resolution camera. It’s also suggested there’s a growing number of Canon shooters that are buying Nikon and Sony cameras to meet their needs.

Our specifications for the EOS 7D Mark II came about three weeks prior to the launch, so if there is indeed a camera coming in October, there should be better information soon (Unless it’s a development announcement).

Razor-billed Curassow (Peru)

I'm just home from leading a trip down in the jungle of Peru. Some really amazing and exciting species down there. The most exciting one for me this year was this Razor-billed Curassow. Usually these guys are shy and hard to see. But we got lucky when this guy popped up for a great view :-)

Lot's more to come in this months newsletter...

Cheers!

GoPro can deliver 30 FPS for 1/2/3 seconds...

…and besides that burst, they now offer full manual exposure and better dynamic range.

It also sports 4K video at 30fps, HD at 120fps and now has a touch screen display on the back.

Now, why is it a cool little company like GoPro can offer all that in such a small package for such a low price and we are still content with these half ass improvements Canon keep offering at every line up.

The future if Canon starts to buy sensors from Sony

So as it turns out, Sony is willing to sell some of their sensors:

http://www.dpreview.com/articles/0661793352/photokina-2014-sony-interview-we-still-need-to-create-more-lenses

Sony sensors can be found in cameras from several different manufacturers. How does your sensor business work?

When we make sensors we put them in several categories. [At any given time] one category of sensors is reserved purely for Sony cameras - we don’t sell them to other companies. Like the sensor in the A7S. But once we’ve enjoyed this advantage we might sell them on later, after some time has passed. This is the second category. The third category of sensors is completely generic - the sensors are created for use internally and to sell externally, to anybody. China or Taiwan or wherever.

and Canon does not discard to buy them:

http://www.dpreview.com/articles/7079726133/photokina-2014-canon-interview-mirrorless-in-the-very-near-future

Canon released two cameras at Photokina - the EOS 7D Mark II and PowerShot G7X. One thing we’ve learned is that the sensor in the G7X is not made by Canon. Does this represent a new philosophy at Canon?

We select the best sensor, whoever the manufacturer is. That’s our policy.

So, let us imagine that Canon releases a 5D mark IV with the 36MP pixels sensor from the D800 and the A7r. Let us suppose that Sony supplies the same slightly improved sensor to both Canon and Nikon for the next 2 generations of cameras. Then, suddenly, when both vendors are addicted to Sony's sensors and have almost completely dropped their R&D in sensor technology, Sony releases a killer 100MP sensor with zero noise at ISO 51200 and 24 stops of DR and decides not to sell it to any external vendor. Sony would absolutely take over the market!

Definitely, it looks like a good decision for Canon not to use Sony's sensors for their flagship cameras. But, don't you think that Nikon is already in Sony's hands?

The question is hypothetical and presumes

1) a 5DIV would improve generically on the 5DIII but with a significant MP boost (at least 32MP compared to the existing 22MP for the 5DIII)

2) the price range of such a camera would follow the pattern of the 5D-family (around 3.500$ at launch)

Nikon D750′s Unsecured WiFi - Anyone with a Smartphone Can Steal Your Photos

I guess with Nikon it's always something...

I'm not a brand hater or fanboy, but it seems that with every recent body Nikon has released there's always some issue. Is that the tradeoff you have to make with when pushing out so many bodies in such a short timeframe?

I know this particular issue is not that much of an issue when you think about it, I was trying to refer more to all the issues they've had lately with their new bodies. In reality, though, I bet there will be plenty of people who forget/don't know/don't care about turning the security on, meaning it could lead to stolen images.

Thoughts?

Unable to format Canon memory card

Hey, you guys think whether I should format my Canon memory card? In fact, last Monday, after shooting many activity photos, I just started to upload them to my laptop for sharing. But, when I attached it to my laptop as usual, the Windows just asked me to format before accessing this card there. But, these newly captured photos had not been backed up well. The formatting process would let them all gone, right? Do I have to format this memory card? Is there any way for me to rescue these photos back at first? Thank you for any suggestion here!

another, Graflex Graflarger back "45", free

So this thing is from my grandfather. I'm just not going to use it, and I don't want it to get dumpstered. I can't say when this was purchased, but the camera it was used with was bought in 1947, i found tha receipt. My grandfather kept records like you wouldn't believe, i'm probably to blame for this receipt not turning up. Anyway, i just pulled this thing from it's original box, plugged it in, crossed my fingers and flipped the switch. Lit up without any issues. amazing, also amazingly heavy and tough. so again, i only ask for shipping fees.
-attached photo will probably be upside down like the softbox thing. sweet!

6) Leica Noctilux-M 50 mm f/0,95 Asph

New camera body 'reviews' = copied and pasted specs, nothing review-ish... why?!

Do people on websites just do this for hopeful popularity? Seriously, a review isn't a review if you are doing that and elaborating like 'Yea, i think this will be great because blah blah blah. It really is remarkable blah blah blah'. So it's basically a list of specs and dragging things out to sound sooooo sophisticated. Mislabeling for attention is really stupid.

Kodak EktaSensor Press Release

I found this on Kodak's website:

KODAK Announces New EktaSensor and Partnerships with Major Camera Manufacturers

ROCHESTER, N.Y., September 25 -- Kodak is announcing the release of the EktaSensor, a revolutionary new digital photography sensor, and partnerships with major camera manufacturers. Kodak, the inventor of the digital camera, has created a new 400 megapixel (MP) sensor for digital cameras that will produce the most stunning photographs ever created by any photographic device. The film emulsion scientists at Kodak took their many years of experience and worked with the top digital sensor experts in the industry to create the new sensor. In addition to the massive number of pixels, the sensor is able to record a vast amount of dynamic range, which is the number of shades between pure black and and pure white. The sensor is able to record a remarkable 40 stops of dynamic range, nearly triple the number of stops in Kodak's top professional film emulsion, Vision3. This breakthrough is due in part to a new 48-bit (16-per R-G-B channel) architecture that also allows for billions of colors to be recorded. In terms of ISO, the sensor is capable of capturing the entire dynamic range from ISO 50 to an amazing ISO 1,638,400. The sensor is in the 35mm format (24x36mm) and an even higher resolution medium format sensor is in development. The EktaSensor records all 400 MPs, but can easily scale the image to more manage sizes in the camera.

Following development of the new sensor, Kodak reached out to their longtime partners, Canon and Nikon, to offer them the opportunity to use the sensor in their camera bodies. Both manufacturers jumped at the opporunity and agreed to Kodak's requirements that there would be no exclusivity of the sensor. Kodak's desire is to return the film days when the 'sensor' was the Kodak film emulsion within the camera. Canon has also established partnerships with Sony and Panasonic, and all major camera manufacturers other than Fuji.

“The changing marketplace has required significant adjustment from Kodak,” said George Eastman, III, great grandson of Kodak's founder and Director, Emerging Products, Eastman Kodak Company. “After many years of languishing in the camera industry, Kodak realized they had significant intellectual property and committed those resources to this new product.”

"The new KODAK EktaSensor is the most significant development since the invention of the digital camera,” said Canon's CEO, Fujio Mitarai, "And we simply couldn't ignore this opportunity to put the very best in our cameras." The new EktaSensor will be available in all of Canon's full frame cameras, starting with the next upgrade cycle. Mr. Mitarai also said, "When we are able to put this sensor in a body like the EOS 7D Mark II, no one will be able to compete with us."

The President of Nikon, Kazuo Ushida, added, "While we viewed ourselves and our supplier, Sony, as leaders in the so-called sensor war, Kodak has made even our most advance products irrelevant." Nikon also announced that the EktaSensor will be available in all of their upcoming full frame sensors, except for the Nikon Df replacement.

"After reading one too many forum post about dynamic range and megapixels, I decided that Kodak had to do something," said Dr. Ones D. Range, lead scientist on the EktaSensor team. He added, "I fondly remember the days of film when cameras competed on the merits of features like autofocus and exposure metering, and I'm happy to announce a return to those times." "I expect consumers to be the big winners now that we have created the ultimate sensor that will be shared by all but one of the major camera manufacturers."

EktaSensor is currently available to all electronics and photography manufacturers and will be available in consumer products starting in Q1, 2015.
