Pricing for the 7D Replacement

Judging by the specs, the new body should fall between the $3399 list of the 5D3 and the $1899 of the 6D. I'm guessing a $2599 list. It won't be below the $1899 of the 6D because the 70D is at $1199 and Canon doesn't want to cannibalize those sales. If they use the 5D3/6D ratio, then a new APS-C body would be $2149 which would be great and shouldn't affect 6D sales.

Somewhere between $2149 and $2599 is doable unless the used 1D Mark IV falls below $2000

ISO 50

Just curious everyone, u just found out how to unlock the ISO 50 upon my 5d mark iii. I was wondering if anyone who has/had use this before. The only reason why I ask just due to me seeng the d810 having ISO 50 and I just wanted to see if it's worth the difference using comparing to ISO 100, saving me half a stop if I'm correct. Thanks everyone!

EOS 7D Mark II & Photokina

We’re standing by the specifications we posted a few days ago for the Canon EOS 7D Mark II. We and others have received suggestions that the sensor in the camera is actually going to be 24mp, which contradicts the very solid evidence we have that says it will indeed be 20.2mp. What our information doesn’t specify is whether or not it’s the identical sensor to the EOS 70D.

If what we posted turns out not to be true, it will be the greatest hoax of specs that I have seen in the 6 years we’ve been around. I will release what we have in our possession after the announcement if it turns out we were wrong.

Another standard zoom advice topic

So, ever since I got the 50mm and 85mm prime, I tend not to use my 24-70/2.8 because of its weight. I would love to take it along for the versatility of zooming. But together with the 5d3, its really cumbersome to haul it around.

So I've been looking at all the standard zoom options available today.

I think I have decided on two things. (Not sure yet)
1.) I don't need f2.8
2.) I need IS OS or equivalent in return.

I've been looking at Canons 24-70 IS and 24-105 IS. But there are way more lenses on the market.

I am able to buy a used 24-70 IS for €550,- (about 725 USD) but as I have been reading about bad copies, I'n not so sure if its a good idea. On paper, it would be the best choice. newer IS system, the lightest of them all.

Can anyone add some more confusion to my dilemma so I am sure I'm considering all the options here.

Estimating extra reach (resolving power) of crop vs FF

Here is a way of calculating the effective extra reach or resolving power of a crop body versus FF, which will amuse the geeks among us.

Measure the MTF of a lens on the crop (= MTFcrop) and the same lens on the FF (= MTFff). The ratio of the MTFs, MTFcrop/MTFff, gives the relative resolving power of the bodies with that lens. However, the crop body can be placed 1.6x further away to give the same field of view. Therefore, the true effective relative resolving power, R, is given by:

R = 1.6x MTFcrop/MTFff.

Photozone lists measured MTFs for a set of lenses on the 5DII and 50D. I calculated their ratios for the Canon 200mm f/2.8 II, 85mm f/1.2 II and 35mm f/2 at wide apertures below the DLA. MTFcrop/MTFff is very close to 0.726 in all cases.

This gives R for 50D/5DII = 1.16.

So the effective extra reach is 16%. (Based on the ratio of their pixel sizes, a value of 36% is expected.

The dpreview widget gives values for the 5DIII and 7D only for a few lenses. I did the same calculations with the Tamron 150-600mm (between 150-400mm), the Canon 200-400mm and the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 A at wider apertures below the DLA. In all cases, MTFcrop/MTFff is close to 0.742.

This gives R for 7D/5DIII = 1.19.

So, the effective extra reach is 19%. (Based on the ratio of their pixel sizes, a value of 45% is expected).

There are always arguments about using MTFs quantitatively, but I think in this particular calculation it is reasonably valid to use them. It fits in reasonably well with experience - Jon has shown there is better resolving power in photos of the moon with the 7D, but it doesn't look 45% better. And my own experience is that the 7D and 70D aren't much better than the 5DIII, certainly not 1.6x.

MISSING Camera body feature

So like many, I have de-coupled the half shutter press from AF, and instead use the AF-ON button to Auto Focus.

Boom - no more hesitation when the trigger is pulled waiting for the lens to re-focus.

What's missing though is a second AF-ON button / Dedicated SERVO mode.

How many of you toggle between "Single Shot" and "Servo" ?

Is it just me, or it would it be sooooooo nice to have them both at your fingertip?

Switching between C1/2/3 isn't a good alternative, esp with a locked dial.

Astrophotography Conversions

With new Canon stuff on the near horizon, I'm debating (If I decide to get the new 7DX) whether to sell my 7D or investigate having a conversion done on it for IR/Astrophotography. Does anyone have any recommendations as to who does the best aftermarket conversions? I've seen companies all over the globe advertising, but I want some feedback and personal experiences and what I should look into for the best set up.

Many thanks!

Which lens would you take along?

I will go on a bicycle trip through Florida starting on October 5th until December 18th. Since I will be very weight limited during this time I have to think about the gear I want to take along. So far it is:

7D without battery grip
15-85mm
40 pancake

Now the question is, if I should take another longer lens with me. This would either be the 70-200 4.0 non IS or the 100 L macro. They are about the same size and weight so it comes down to the subjects. From your standpoint, would opt for 100mm more on the long end or for macro capabilities.
I do not want to take both because of size and weight concerns. I really like to shoot macro pics but might miss some shots of birds and alligators if I don't take the tele. :-\

Any tips for must see place are also welcome. I will start and end in Miami and plan to go to the Everglades first and after that to Key West.

Happy ending

I had to talk about this somewhere it would be appreciated. Almost three weeks ago, I had, what in hindsight, was a stupid accident, but I still feel that I was being careful to no avail. Before the happy ending, here's what happened. I was up early photographing falls/cascades in a stream. The stream runs year round and is quite slippery. However, I was being careful (or so I thought). Long story short, I slipped and dunked a 5D Mk. III and less than one month old 16-35mm f/4. They were fully submerged for at least 5 seconds... enough that the lens took on water. I set them up to dry and after the body showed no visible signs of water (days later) I tried to see if anything would happen... nothing. I sent them both to Canon and they were returned within a few days without any repairs and indicating that they were not repairable. I set them aside and ordered replacements.

A quick commentary: I have purchased large, heavy duty ziploc bags to be used when moving from one place in a stream to another or in other instances where a "water landing" is a possibility.

Last night, I pulled a battery from the charger and, on a whim, put it in the 5D. The only thing I had to do was reset the date and time. Everything works and all the settings are as they were. Crazy. That led me to check the lens. Again, all good, except that the elements need to be cleaned (on the inside) so it'll have to go back to Canon to see about that.

Lucky day!

With all the hype on the forum about the 7D2, the question is asked.... "Are you going to get one"?

Who is serious about the camera and who is just kicking tires or wondering about Canon's possible plans for the future?

EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS versus EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II

I have a EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS I bought used to use for sports, but I found that the AF never really kept up, so I haven't used it much. Do I have a bad copy, or is this fairly normal for this lens. (This is all with a 7D)

Is it worth selling it and getting the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II ? I have heard the image quality of the mark II is much better. Is this lens any good for sports, or should I go with a prime instead?

Thanks!

400 f/2.8L II IS: Took the plunge...

Well, it's time to upgrade again. I sold my 300 f/2.8L I IS and 400 f/2.8L I IS lenses (because I don't really need the 300 anymore) and bought a 400 f/2.8L II IS for sports all next year.

Anyone using this lens currently? I was really amazed how much lighter it felt vs. the version I and I'm also expecting slightly faster AF with the 1Dx. It'll arrive about September 2, just in time for my first weekend of sports this fall, 9/6-9/7.

Thanks for any input.

DxO and DPReview Getting Lazy?

I was comparing the Sigma 24-105 and the Canon 24-105 on the DP Review widget, and I was a little concerned that their results looked exactly the same for the two lenses. I know these two lenses perform similarly, but I doubt that their results could possibly be exactly the same for all apertures, and focal lengths.

Sigma 35 Art vs EF 35 IS in real life

Hello guys!
I have been shooting with Sigma 35mm Art lens about a year now, and i love it. Extremely sharp, nice build quality, contrast etc.
Still, it is a bit heavy and bulky, and I have been looking for EF 35 IS.
I know Sigma is bit better when shooting test charts, but have anyone switched from Sigma to Canon and used them side by side? If so, have you regretted the switch? Do you miss F1.4? I mean is Sigma really noticeably better IN REAL LIFE?
Image stabiilizer would be very welcome, also weight and size reduce is nice.

Edit: I also have 40mm pancake. How does the 35mm IS compare on that?

Advice sought on travel to Cuba

Hi all,

I would like to travel to Cuba next year, taking either a photographic tour or workshop. I'd really like to go there before capitalism and commercialism over run the place.

Because of my job, I have to travel in a manner that is 100% in compliance with US federal statutes and regulations. So an approved tour is the only way I can go. (Please do not suggest ways that I could get around this because that is just not an option.)

I would love to hear from any of you if you have gone to Cuba on a tour that is compliant with US law. Recommendations and advice are greatly appreciated. And if you've gone to Cuba in some other manner, I'd still be interested in hearing where you went and what you really enjoyed seeing and doing as that might help me focus my tour options.

Cheers,

Vivid

Yongnuo vs. Pixel?

would pixel using incompatibility between pixel magos and 622C to discourage people on buying 622C and sticking with pixel kings or...

yongnuo would be using this incompatibility to discourage people on buying pixel magos and pick their 568EXII or 500EX???

for those who aren't aware, Pixel released recently a hard to believe flash unit with GN 65, HSS capable and 4w LED modeling lamp for no more than 90 dollars on ebay. I'm intended to pay to see this in action but I've been reading about incompatibility between them and 622C, what makes the set up useless for many low bugget strobists.

yongnuo already released a firmware update wich fixed some issues but ignored the Magos incompatibility.

I hope that its not a marketing war or something, even though everything says both wont give in

any one who has any news about this, comment please
