Existing internal processing and adjustment using RAW format?

Hi ;)

As part of a vegetation monitoring program in nature reserves, I examine changes by using a time series of photos. I use a modified rebel i3, in which the internal IR filter has been removed (http://www.maxmax.com/ircameraconversions.htm). I use a series of external filets in order to sample in different wavelength. I use fixed WB, shutter speed and RAW format only.

I dont need a "good looking" picture - I need the original data with minimal Intervention of the camera.

But my question has to do with the image processing – since the results I get aren't good enough:

1.I am interested in the raw values of the radiation – Is there any additional processing in RAW format, such as balancing blue green and red (the sensor was double green detectors, any effect?), or adjustment in the case of saturation of the sensor?
2.Where can I find quantitative data (not picture) about the behavior of the sensor along the spectrum?

Thanks!

Thoughts on 70-200 f/4 vs 70-300 vs 100-400?

Just tried a new superzoom on a vacation last week to a lot of "blah". Rented a 100-400 last Summer which was AWESOME.
I have a 70D with indoor sports telephoto needs met with a 100 2.0 and 200 2.8II.
So I'm looking for that one special telephoto zoom for outdoor sports/activities, travel, etc. and am slightly leaning towards the 70-300L. 400mm would be useful at times, but 70-100 might be attractive and the rest up to 300 probably good-to-go 95+% of the time.
70-200 is likely enough most of the time so I'm willing to make a "focal-length" sacrifice for the most image quality possible.
Is there one of the above that really shines above the rest in image quality? Of course, there's the upcoming 100-400 which is somewhat of an unknown and the 70-200 4.0 non-IS maybe the bargain of the bunch.
Thanks for any direction even though this has been discussed a lot. The latest thoughts can't hurt, though, I guess.
Much appreciated.

Get rid of a 1D3 to make room for the inevitable 7D2?

Even though the 7D2 is yet to be officially announced, we all know that it is on its way. With that being said, do you guys think it is worth selling a 1D3 to be replaced by the 7D2? I know it is hard to say for sure until we know the 7D2 specs, but I have a hard time believing that that 7D2 won't exceed pretty much everything that the 1D3 can do.

Thoughts?

D810 vs. 3D

To Canon,

I am either buying the D810 or the 3D if it will be over 36 MP and reviews of it will be better than reviews for the D810. If reviews for both of them say that their picture quality is equal and the 3D has WIFI, I will get the 3D. I have only bought Canon cameras in the past. I do not want to break the trend, but from everything I read, the best camera for landscapes is the D810.

I hope you find this post.

*UPDATE*

We’ve re-opened with a few procedural changes. We will implement these changes on an order-by-order basis.

Original Story

This story pretty much only affects Canadian customers of Lens Rentals Canada, though it has started to make its way around the web.

I own Lens Rentals Canada and have been dealing with the theft of our items while they’ve been in transit with Canada Post. We have only been telling our customers about the issue and had a splash screen on our web site explaining we weren’t taking any new orders. We are doing our absolute best to honour reservations already in queue. We never released this information to the media. However it hit Reddit, and well… that was that. It’s all over the place now.

I did a little interview with CBC here in Canada, although there’s not much I know about the situation at hand. We do hope to have a resolution one way or another in the coming week or so.

There have only been a few instances where I’ve crossed over LRC and Canon Rumors, but I figured I’d answer to the emails I have been receiving from readers that know I wear both hats. I thank all of our customers for their kind words and support, it has been a stressful few weeks for everyone at Lens Rentals Canada and we’ll do our best to do what’s right for you.

Zeiss APO Sonnar T 135mm f2.0 ZE

Since Dustin published a review for this fantastic lens, http://dustinabbott.net/2014/07/zeiss-apo-sonnar-t-2135mm-ze-review-2/ (well worth reading), I thought it deserved a thread.

I am currently on vacation, so the only image I had on my MacBook was of the local lion (the first image I shot with the lens), but to kick it off.

5DIII, 1/640s, f2.0 ISO100 (handheld and focused with standard focusing screen)

(I´ll see if I have something more relevant when I get home.)

50mm Coma Sigma Art vs Regular Sigma F1.4

Had a rented 50 Art last weekend and did a quick coma comparison in the corner of a full frame 6D. Old on the left Art on the right. F1.4, F2, F2.8. Ignore the brightness differences as it's just different areas of the sky. I should have done them on the tracking mount instead or paid more attention to location but it really doesn't matter for this.

2014_07_27_sigma28.jpg

Most all the 50mm offerings are so bad at it. The Art I'd hoped was even better than it was. Even if at the same time it is far better than the others, minus the Zeiss and the more expensive Nikon. In a way it's a 1 stop boost in less coma. Though yeah it is going to be sharper anyway. But if I was shooting something with street lights near the corners or with stars, I'd probably feel the need to head to F2.8. And if I'm at F2.8 I just about may as well be using the old Sigma. It's softer but guessing I'd maybe sell it for $200, making the jump $750 and I'm not sure it is that much softer when we're talking far corners here anyway. Not sure why I had it in my head the F2.8 Art coma result is what F1.4 was going to be closer to. Lenstip made it seem close to that. Or well lenstip coma at F1.4 looks like my star test between F2 and F2.8 I guess.

Anyway, just an example for those looking at getting it for that reason, which is probably many.

Yes at this years Photokina NIKON is reported as releasing a medium format camera with the same sensor as Hasselblad, Phase one , and Pentax, but mirror less and with a new type of shutter, will this put the damper on our new 7D

  • Poll Poll
POLL: 6d weather sealing experiences & warning

When you've shot for a short time (~5min) in medium rain with the 6d...

  • nothing happened, the sealing seems to have worked

    Votes: 23 34.8%
  • buttons malfunctioned, but it worked again after drying

    Votes: 4 6.1%
  • the camera broke and needed to be serviced

    Votes: 2 3.0%
  • (see results) I only use my 6d in good conditions

    Votes: 17 25.8%
  • (see results) I don't have a 6d or never experienced bad weather with it

    Votes: 20 30.3%

The day before yesterday I was surprised by a thunderstorm and shot with my 6d (and a sealed 70-300L lens) for about 5 minutes in the rain. I did my best to still protect the camera and wrapped some cloth around it, but some rain hit it. Afterwards I dried it with a towel as good as you can in a thunderstorm and stored in a waterproof bag.

Problem 1: The back buttons (Q/INFO) and the joystick buttons started malfunctioning after a very short time after the rain began. I have not experienced this behavior with my 60d.

Problem 2: Yesterday the camera broke down completely after some minutes of reviewing pictures - it's now at Canon service and I hope the warranty covers it. I had put it in a dry place over the previous night, but didn't use the "rice bag" method.

Question: What are your experiences with the 6d and wet conditions? Was I just very unlucky? I know the 6d sealing level is well below the 5d3 (which itself is way below a 1d), but after this experience I'll have to tread my 6d as I would a Rebel :-\

What do you Splurge on?

As promised, the counter-thread:

What do you splurge on - not just a little, but a lot. Things that you know you could do with lesser versions of, but either you have to have the best, or you just love the item so much you have to have it.

My list:

1. L lenses - I just love 'em

2. 1D- and 5-series bodies - tough full frame bodies - gotta have 'em

3. The 50L - related to #1 and the 50 f/1.4 is nearly as good, but I love the build quality, f/1.2 aperture, and taking portraits with the lens

4. B+W Kaesemann XS-Pro circular polarizer - I have a 82mm of this and can't really tell much difference between it and my 77mm Hoya HD C-PL that costs half as much, but it's one of the best, so why not...or maybe why did I spend so much on a C-PL?

5. RRS support gear - many cheaper ballheads are as good or better than my BH-55 and a generic camera plate would probably be reasonable, but custom-fitting RRS gear is sweet

Canon EF 50 f/1.2L Goes Missing at Canon Germany

*UPDATE #2*

Both fine countries have found their 50 f/1.2L lenses!

*UPDATE*

Denmark too! (Thanks Jan)

Original Story

The Canon EF 50 f/1.2L USM has gone missing from the Canon Germany prime lens page.

Introduced in 2007, the EF 50 f/1.2L has seen its share of controversy due to a design that can lead to focus shifting in certain situations for a lot of photographers. We do believe this lens is due for replacement in the next year or so.

In this case? It’s probably just a mistake on the Canon Germany web site, though stranger things have happened.
