24-70 f4 IS macro performance

I haven't really managed to find a reliable assessment of the 24-70 f4 IS macro performance.
I was looking into some of the cheaper options such as the 50mm 2.5 macro but it occurred to me that the 24-70 might be good enough for my macro hobby while also being very useful to me professionally as a replacement for my 24-105 (also, there is a 250$ cashback on the 24-70 in my country)
Anyone care to chime in with their experien, the ? Is the macro function on the 24-70 comparable to a dedicated macro lens? (I am aware of the very close focusing distance required to achieve x 0.7)
EDIT: After the mail-in rebate in DK, the 24-70 ends up at around 1100$

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Focus Issues - including after calibration?

Hi guys,

I have a Sigma 30mm f/1.4. I use it primarily on a 7D (And often on a 60D, too).

The lens seems to focus perfectly, up to a certain distance (for argument's sake, we'll say 10 feet). Within that distance, the lens is generally spot on, sharp and get the focus right.

However, when I go above that distance, the lens seems to have real issues with missing focus. Sometimes it's right, vast majority of the time it's wrong.

So I sent the lens off for calibration with our Sigma dealer (who are fantastic to deal with so far) and I got it back today. Sigma dealer reckons there's a bit of front focus, which they believe they fixed. Said they took a few random shots and it should be grand now.

However, the lens still exhibits the same issues (now, i do genuinely believe that the Sigma guys think they got it right, as, if I were checking a lens' focus ability, I'd get really close to my subjects so the DOF would be shallower, so they probably didnt really try and distance shots at all, which is understandable).

I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue, and if so, have you had it fixed? Did you have to re-send for calibration again (I'm guessing I'll be needing to re-send with the camera bodies, but seen as the lens is spot-on under a certain distance, and exhibits similar traits on both bodies, I'm under the impression it's the lens at fault).

Anyone any experience of this?

Cheers

Second shooting a Wedding

I asked a Wedding photographer friend if I could second shoot sometime, I wanted to get some experience for a friend's wedding I reluctantly agreed to shoot in October.

Here are a selection of my images from that day.

16-35 f4 infra red use

I've just received my 16-35 f4 today and took it out for a bit of testing. I'm impressed!

I have noticed most shots seem under exposed by a stop or two but I need to investigate further to see if it was my fault...

I did try some infra red with a Hoya R72 filter - very clean images with NO hot spot, wide open & f11...

Just thought I would share this info as a lot of you are keen IR shooters...

edit - Another thread has this info...- http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=21039.0

54 Megapixel Full Frame Sensor with 2460 focusing points!!!

Seems like SAR has already picked up on the Canon rumours of a new sensor.

I do not know if he was joking, but he says that:

All I can tell you know is that I heard about a 54 Full Frame Megapixel sensor from Sony (with 2460 focusing points (no joke!) and the focusing area covers 78% of the entire sensor). It was actually planed for a 2015 release but maybe Canon will make them change those plans…

:o

Not sure if it is just very quiet in the rumour website business at the moment, and they have all agreed to throw a little spice into the mix, but it looks like Photokina could be a very interesting show to attend.

Midsized Flashlights to work unleashed

Hi Guys!

As my husband stays in Brazil for 10 weeks, I have plenty of time to join photographic courses.
One course is to learn to work with unleashed flashes for portraits, where it is preferred to bring your own flashes along (to learn how to perform best with your own EQ).

For this, I´d like to buy 2 smaller flashes (430EXII or an third party model) to work with my 550EX.
I found an Nissin i40 and the Metz mecablitz 48 AF-1 Digital as an third party flash.

Would one of these be an good choice too, or stay at Canon 430EXII? Or do You know another good flash for me? I will use them with diffusors or other flash units header. My Cams are an 7D and my new 6D.

G
Daniela

p.s.: My husband wrote, he sees an enormous amount of expensive equipment each day in Brazil. Some have taped their bodies, some are using neopren covers. So there is much speculation about new cameras and lenses. He personally thinks, he saw an D800 successor. Some photographers use faked straps (my husband bought an "7D Mark 2" for me ;-), for himself an "D810"). For 40BRL your Cam changes into an eyecatcher, if someone sees your neckstrap ;-))) He noticed some "1DX Mark II" an "5D MarkIV" who have been surrounded by photographers mwho tried to get an shot of these "new" cams and were disappointed as this was just fake.

Long shot - Anyone tried using FD lenses on an EOS body?

So, my father-in-law was an avid photography enthusiast back in the day and since his passing I have become the recipient of his gear (mostly way too old to be of use or poorly stored and in such a sorry state that it would not be worth it to put money/time into restoration). However, tonight I received a camera bag with an AE-1 and a variety of FD lenses that appear to be in nice condition.

Has anyone purchased a lens adapter and used FD lenses on their EOS body? I found a Bower adapter on B&H that is reasonably priced and wonder if it would be worth the money and effort to just play around with the old lenses and see what kind of images I would get.

I understand that the lenses will be fully manual and I am not expecting to use them on a regular basis. I would mostly just use them for experimental shooting.

Thoughts?

Heat warning on 600EX-RT

Has anyone ever observed heat warnings on 600EX-RT flash units?

I had three inside a softbox, and after some 498 shots, I got a slower recycle time and noticed that the LCD panels were glowing red. That was unsettling. I replaced them with three other 600EX-RTs, and after just over 500 shots, I got more red LCDs and slower recycle times. I had the units set at 1/8 power. Fortunately, it was time to switch to natural light.

I didn't use again any of the flashes for more than a week, and everything seems fine. Might the life of the flash tubes have been shortened significantly in any way? I suspect not, but I am curious nonetheless.

On a side note, the ST-ET-R3 lasts for an extraordinarily long time between battery changes. I've replaced batteries in the flash units four or five times, while only twice in the transmitter.

5Diii vs Sony A7s vs GH4

Hey guys, Im planning a comparison video between the 5Diii, A7s and GH4. I have gotten a lot of good insight from you all in the past, but I am opening this up to suggestions you might want to see?

I looked at the GH4 and have one now, it is very impressive for video work. (Like amazingly). It ran into issues with sports focusing.

What tests would you guys like to in a match-up between these three other than the typical ones I normally do:

- ISO Noise
- Sports Shooting
- Dynamic Range
- HDR
- Portrait Comparison
- Video Moire
- Etc?

I thank you in advance!

Michael

Petitioning Canon to improve the C100

Hi All, here is a link to an online petition asking Canon to improve the C100 by adding the auto ISO feature. This feature is very useful for adjusting exposure on the fly. It is particularly useful when GlideCaming and also for unmanned secondary cameras on partly cloudy days where the lighting conditions keeps changing.

Please sign this petition to help inform them that we consider this a useful feature.

300 2.8 IS Mk1 v Mk2

I'm looking to buy either a new 300 2.8 IS II or used MkI and I was hoping someone here who has used both can provide some advice on which to choose.

I have never used either lens before. I have used the original 1987 300 2.8 and was very impressed, although I was disappointed with the IQ when using the 2X Extender III. I have also used the 300 f/4 extensively and liked it, but I wouldn't buy one as the f/4 is too limiting for many situations I shoot in.

I am wondering if there is a significant IQ difference between the Mk1 and Mk2 lenses? How about with the 2x III? I'm trying to figure out whether the Mk2 is really worth the extra ~$3000. The lens would be primarily used for sports.

I should mention that I will be handholding this lens. I'm used to holding the old 300 so weight is not an issue.

The new APS-C Champ. (My wild guess).

Since most of the rumors coincide with “new” sensor technology, and significantly lower noise; My guess is that Canon has further evolved the Dual /( Multi) CMOS technology to acquire more light, while maintaining resolution???

Perhaps distributing pixels over multiple sensors, with a method of acquiring “even” light to each sensor element. ( The only “current” manner of lowering APS-C noise is to reduce resolution/pixel-count.

Canon has a history of “field testing” new technology in lower priced cameras, hence the 70D.

Coming Home to Nikon “ The story behind the story”

did you read this? was new to me.

..............
The program was dream come true run by a true visionary. It wasn’t about selling product it was about teaching and education. In the big picture if you taught and inspired people, they would buy cameras and if it was a Nikon or a Canon or a Leica it was all good for the overall industry. Michael Newler had one problem, he cared. In fact he cared so much that he put all of us first. This led to problems because we were first and the corporation was second. Michael was not a corporate player. He spoke his mind and really only cared about making the Explorer of Light program the best photographic program on earth. We all got to know each other and we all developed life long friendships within this tight knit group. Michael went to bat for all of us on every front explaining to management time and time again why we should not be traveling on food per diems as an example. He would go to the top and say these guys aren’t employees, they don’t get health care and vacations and they don’t even get a salary. We, Canon need to treat them with respect and understand that they are freelancers and they all get paid large sums from their clients so lets just treat them with respect. Michael was relentless trying to pursue perfection and we all adored him. We loved Canon. We travelled, spoke, ate and drank good wine and Michael would just go to bat for us because in the end the cost of the program was a drop in the bucket to the billions that Canon was making. In fact Canon would spend more to have their logo at major tennis event and other sporting venues than they spent on all of us combined. That said we talked, we inspired and people purchased what we talked about. Finally we threw a major surprise party for Michael in New York and just about every Explorer of Light showed up. It was the culmination of everything he had done for us and the program but we made a fatal mistake. We did not invite some of the Canon Management and they started to retaliate. The writing was on the wall and the program was going to change. Michael took a well deserved vacation and when he returned he literally found that his pass key didn’t work. When he asked a security guard why his card didn’t work he was led to human resources and told he was done. It was one of the most inhumane executions I have ever seen. With that move the program changed and not in a good way.

...............

This year there was another round of blood letting and I truly thought I was at least safe. I was even using Canon printers but I was told that my metrics weren’t right. Numbers don’t lie, people do because my metrics were about as good as they could get. To this day on the Canon web site I am listed as having 16,391 views and 125 searches which far exceeds any other Explorer. I have an image on Google with close to 20,000,000 hits and gave lectures, workshops, and multiple ads in magazines like The New Yorker, PDN, Popular Photography and more but my metrics weren’t right. I along with many others were reduced to the title of emeritus which sounds more like a disease and it was an insult. Canon was convinced that the future is video but they lack in my opinion a fundamental understanding of the very art form. just because a camera shoots video one is not a cinema photographer and Canon does not get this. They should have learned from there past mistakes because they have made them before. At one point they thought the future was point and shoot cameras and they spent billions but in the end they got their behinds kicked by Apple and the iPhone. They wanted cinema photographers in the Explorer of Light program and they should have started a different program but they lacked insight because they thought they would be able to use the material that the cinema photographers shot for promotion. The problem was and is simple, most cinema folks don’t own their rights, they are owned by studios.
I had to make a decision, do I sit back and remain an emeritus? It was a tough decision because I really like Steve Inglima but this is business and I simply could not go on supporting a company that stabbed me in the back. I started to look for a new home. I tried a lot of brands but I was looking for a lot more than a brand. I was looking for another “Newlah”. The cameras are tools and the tools help but it is our wet ware that creates the images and it is people that make a company. Switching back to Epson printers was a no brainer because I used them for decades and love the printers and the people behind them like Dan Steinhardt and Eddie Murphy. For cameras however, I needed a company that believed in the still image and my search bought me back to my very roots where I started which was Nikon. William Pekala who is soon retiring is a class act and built a legacy that I believe will live on and Nikon believes in photographers. I have found so many people whom I sincerely respect at Nikon like Joseph Carey, Michael Corrado, Mark Suban and Angie Salazar. So to make a long story short, I have come home to Nikon and I couldn’t be happier.

Best Point & Shoot waterproof/tough camera?

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking to purchase a point & shoot waterproof/tough camera for my sister, and I would like to hear your recommendations. Here are things to consider:

* My sister knows next to nothing about photography, so the camera needs to take good JPEG photos, and video, in auto mode.
* The camera needs to have easy to use wifi connectivity, so my sister can easily download photos to her iPad/iPhone, and share the photos on Facebook.

Right now I'm leaning toward the new Olympus camera, but I'd like to know if there is a better camera available.

<a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_1Dx_mk2.html" target="_blank">Northlight has posted a bit of a roadmap</a> for the pro level cameras from Canon. They’ve been told that the EOS-1D X Mark II would come first, with a potential announcement coming in very late 2014. The EOS 5D Mark III would follow afterwards. Both cameras will most likely benefit from the new sensor technology we’ll see in the upcoming EOS 7D replacement.</p>
<p><strong>CR’s Take

</strong>If the technology in the EOS 7D replacement is as great as people are claiming it to be (we don’t yet know what it is), then it would make sense to replace the other flagship models in the lineup fairly quickly. The EOS 5D Mark III was arrived in March of 2012, and the EOS-1D X soon after in June of 2012. A three year cycle for each seems doable, even if the EOS 7D will have taken nearly 5 years to replace.<strong>

1DX2 5D4 to be announced in January/ February 2015

Over at NL I just read:
21st Both the 5D4 and 1D X mk2 are to be announced January/February of next year, we're told (thanks).
The 1D X mk2 will be announced first (potentially late this year), but will ship later.
Both will incorporate significant advances in sensor design, which mean that there will be no high MP '3D' class body this year.

The info suggested that this was what was being tested in the studios we heard about last month,
(we've read it here: http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=21078.0)
and that elements of it woud appear in the upcoming 7D mk2, but that the real advance would not be seen until next year.

@CR guy: did you receive any other, supplementing news by sources which were accurate in the past?

http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_5d4.html

What could the specs of a 5D4 be in ISOs? "native 51K"? Let's say ISO 25.6k like my ISO 12.8 on the 5D3 today? I just hope in case of the 5D4 they don't raise the MP count but improve the great allround cam significantly in IQ high ISO wise.

help please

Hi there
I have a canon 5d3 and have been using wireless flash triggers - yongnuo 603II. Trouble is that the transmitter is now stuck on the camera!

I read online that there is a 'locking pin' that must be stuck - does anyone have any suggestions how to "unlock" it?

Is it expensive to send to canon to repair (I am in the UK) or should i just take the trigger apart and try to do it myself -may be cheaper unless I damage the camera in the process?

Any help appreciated

Best
Tony

35mm f/2 IS, your experiences and impressions

Hello all,

I have had the shorty-forty for some time now and I've enjoyed it a lot. I like the slightly wider perspective versus 50mm, and found myself using it on my 6D very often. I've recently saved up a bit of money and was considering selling off the 40mm for Canon's new 35mm f/2 IS. I've read great things about it, and I wanted to hear about other peoples' experiences with the lens. Did you love it? Hate it? Have you used the 40 as well? How does it compare to the 40? And was it worth the much greater price tag versus the 40? Finally, I also have a copy of the canon 50mm 1.4, the best copy I've so far come across (I've tried two others over the past few years and encountered problems achieving accurate focusing and one copy that seemed to optically "fall apart" around infinity focus). Does anyone own and use both lenses, or are they just too close in focal length?

Thank you in advance for anyone insights and suggestions!

Andrew
