Canon to bring production home as yen continues slide

An interesting article on SLR sales:

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/canon-bring-production-home-yen-073624820.html

Notably:

SLR SALES

The CEO said sales of digital single-lens reflex cameras likely came in under 8 million units in 2013 for the first annual decline since Canon introduced its first model in 2004, as the slowing pace of innovation meant fewer consumers felt the need to replace older models. He also attributed the drop to prolonged economic weakness in Europe and slowing growth in China.

"SLR sales fell last year due to poor economic conditions," Mitarai said. "But I think that they will rise stably from now on. I want to aim for close to 9 million units in 2014."

But industry insiders said Canon and its closest rival Nikon Corp (TYO:7731) were struggling to clear excess inventory built up as they overcompensated for damage done to factories in Thailand after flooding in 2011 - leading to prices of entry-level models being slashed by more than 50 percent to as little as $300.

Canon's shipments of interchangeable lens cameras accounted for 45.1 percent of global shipments in July-September, according to IDC, a 5 percent drop in share from the year prior and a 25.7 percent drop in unit sales.

Where are Canons innovation?

I was just wondering about where Canons innovation has gone? Sure, they put a touch screen on a dslr, but that is not really innovative. We´ve had this on smart phones for a long time (yes, they are caneras as well), but that is about it. WiFi? They have offered WiFi for a long time as well, but as an add on feature. Integrating it is more of an evolution, the same as with the touch screen.

The reason I ask this question, "where are the innovation" is because I recently bought my wife a Sony NEX-6, anf my poor 550D looked really really ancient next to it!! Dont get me wrong, I do enjoy shooting my canon, and I have solid lenses, but it really was a huge gap between the Canon and the Sony.

I do think that Canon produces very good, solid performing cameras, no doubt. The 5D3 and the 1DX really dont have true competition. They are not the best at everything, but as a whole, perhaps the best tools avaliable for the professionals. However, I´m not a professional, though quite enthustiastic :)
Where is Canons equivalent to the Sony A7/R or the Nikon DF? Where is the downloadable apps for the Camera, motion sensors etc.? The EOS M? Never tried it, but from what I understand, a good, solid performer (after the FW update), but not very innovative.

The thing is, the people at Canon are not stupid, I am sure they have all the technology in the world to make super innovative cameras (yes, even fix the DR-problem that really isn´t a problem), but why dont they show us, or just give us some hints? Where are Canon at the CES?

I am not the type that want the latest and greatest technology at the moment it is released. But, I am gonna upgrade my equipment in a couple of years. Hopefully I can stick to Canon and not feel I´m buying an old relic.

EF-S 10-22 stock levels drying up??

Hi All! First post...

I have been thinking seriously about buying an EF-S 10-22 lately. It was $529 on Amazon, dropped for about a day to $499 a few days after Xmas, then back to $529. I knew I should have bought it then....

Then 2 days ago, up to $589, and then tonight up to $599 and it says only 1 left in stock.

Also, the grey market version on B&H is no longer listed.

Anybody have any insight on this?

I was wanting one for my 7D before I head to Hawaii in Feb.

Just a general thanks

Hello all

I guess you could class me as a CR Stalker - being only my second post - and have been visiting CR pages regularly. Being a novice, but enthusiast (hence my nic), to the art of photography, I have little to offer in these forums. I therefore prefer to listen than contribute -so I guess I'm a bit of a sponger in that respect, but I figure if I have little to contribute - best shut up.

Anyway - I feel compelled to say a general thankyou to all on this site - and there are far too many to mention - but particularly Neuroanatomist and Mt Spokane who have provided so many detailed contributions and specific support that have helped me (and I'm sure many others) both in my search for gear, flash photography and also techniques for better perfecting the art.

50$ monolights

Hey folks, I just received wind from Adorama that they launched some new monolights. Price is ridiculously low, starting at 50$ for a 120Ws model. There's gotta be a catch somewhere I figure. I almost feel like trying a couple out just to see what they really are. I mean, for 50$ each...

Anyway, just putting it out there. What do you guys think? Sugar-coated bomb or not?

Question about Canon Lens Quality, Sir

Dear Teachers and Friends.
Just bother my low level brain , that why some canon cheapest lens is sharper ( According to the Charts) than the High end " L " lens---Yes, I know that This L Lens is Faster Lens.
Yes, I just order My New toy EF -M 18-55 mm F/ 3.5 - 5.6 IS STM = $ 109 US Dollars for my new toy EOS-M--For the Low Price, I think that this Lens is Cheap and No good at all, But, When I compare with His Bigger Brother EF 16-35 mm F/ 2.8 L II ( $ 1699)---Per Canon Chart, This Cheapo is Sharper than the High cost one. Am I wrong ?----May Be my Brain not working to night.
Yes, I know---We can not compare the Slow Lens and Faster Lens-----BUT, My Canon EF-M 22 mm. F/ 2.0 is not bad at all, yes , less sharper at the center( 9.0 compare to 9.5), but sharper at the corners.
MAY BE MY WRONG THINKING OF THE POOR BRAIN is drive me crazy.
Please, I need your Help to correct me if I wrong. Yes, If I take the Photo at High F stop at F = 8.0 in the day time, Bright Sun Shine at ISO = 100, Am I right that The Cheapo EF-M 18-55 mm is Sharper all of the Picture include all corners = ???

Where to get 5DIII sensor cleaned?

I bought my 5Diii about 2 months ago and have used it on one trip to Italy for olive harvesting season and have come to find out there is a dirty spot on the sensor. Not a huge issue, but I'd like to have a perfectly clean sensor and entrust it to the professionals to clean.

Does anyone have any recommends on where to have this done?

Canon? B&H (I hear they do this)? Any good / bad experiences?

EOS-1D X Firmware Version 2.0

Looking at the Canon USA web site for the 1DX, one could assume the new firmware version 2.0 is already out there! Maybe this is an indicator that it might be released at any time?

Here's what's on it:

"Overview

The choice of professionals in fields ranging from extreme sports to wedding photographers, the EOS-1D X DSLR camera is incomparable in speed, ruggedness and precision. And it only gets better. Responding to user input, the new Firmware Update Version 2.0 adds enhancements that provide improved AF performance and more control of exposure and customization, helping to ensure EOS-1D X users have an ideal tool to do what they do best: capturing those golden opportunities, wherever and whenever they happen."

ISO Full vs. 1/3 Stops (Noise & DR Test) for Still Photography

The topic of the which ISO is best came about several years ago with the 5D II and Technicolor's release of their CineStyle Picture Style. Numerous blogs and tests were done for video, but it seems that this is still an unanswered question in terms of stills. There have been several debates over the camera pushing and pulling data, reduced DR, etc.

I believe I ignited the latest round of this discussion when reviewing some distant telephoto shots, so I'll see what I can do to settle it.

Over the next few days, I'll get out some of my IT-8 targets & ColorChecker Passport and take lots of shots under controlled lighting with my 5DIII and TS-E 24 II and/or 300 2.8 IS II at numerous ISOs and light levels. I'll post the results / files and ask for peer review. I don't have any analytical tools, so will have to go by IQ and file sizes, I suppose, but I'm still thinking about it...

If you have any suggestions before I start testing, please let me know.

Canon 6D Vertical Banding problem

Hi,

I wonder if anyone else has experienced Vertical (shadow) banding with his 6D camera? I have plenty of noise in the shadows/low light areas with vertical lines in it. I had it with my previous body, got a new one and the problem is still the same...
Contacted Canon and showed some 'test footage' but all they see is some compression...

All this footage was shot at ISO 400 (!!!) with f/4, FULL HD ALL-I 25p settings... And it looks awefull!
I bought this camera because of the good reviews, but as a film maker I can't do ***¨ with it now. Sending it in for reviewing the sensor at a Canon repair center, but I think they will say there is no problem. Isn't there? :-\

Helios 44M-4 and 5D MKii

Just got myself a Helios 44M-4 at a thrift shop, came with a Zenit 11 but I just bought the camera for the lens. I know these lenses are supposed to have beautiful bokeh but I've also heard some will hit the mirror of full frame cameras. I shoot with a 5D MKII and I just ordered a this adapter http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001G4QXN2/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with a similar set up and weather it hit the mirror and if there are any modifications that can easily be done to the lens to avoid this.

Here is an image of the lens itself

Canon 7D Vs. Canon 70D

Dear fellows, due to the recent drop in the price of the Canon 70D and similar or better features offered by this compared to the Canon 7D, I was wondering if replacing my Canon 7D by 70D would be a good option for casual photography. Pricewise I can still sell my used 7D for around $900 and get the new 70D for about the same.
On top, the ergonomics of the 70D are very similar to the FF Canon 6D that is also in my plans. Any thought?

Need advise on purchasing lens from Canada

I am a newbie, recently retired, and starting to get serious about my photography. I currently have the 60D with the 50 1.8, 15-85 lenses. I am going on an African safari later this year, and have decided to add the 70-300 4-5.6 IS L lens. I read a lot of discussions here, and have settled on the 70-300 mainly because of the weight and portability. On my crop body, I am hoping that the reach will be fine.

So here is the dilemma. Looks like I missed the $200 rebate on the lens and will now have to pay $1599. I happened to notice that not only was the lens cheaper at Camera Canada, but the rebate in Canada does not expire until January 16th.

Has anyone purchased a lens from Canada? I know that Camera Canada is a reputable store, but I am wondering what additional fees I might expect besides the $29 shipping fee and any fee that the credit card might charge me. Also, I know that the warranty will be fine from Canon, but do you think there will be an issue with collecting the rebate since I am in the US and buying from Canada?

Appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks
MM

Gura Gear is excited to introduce the newest limited edition color in the Bataflae 32L – Stone Green. The limited edition Grey and Tan colors of the Bataflae 32L were discontinued last fall, and we are currently out of stock of the Grey Bataflae 32L and have limited quantities remaining of the Tan Bataflae 32L. Pre-order the new Stone Green today to receive it in the first shipment later this month. If you have any questions, please contact Sarah Hamilton at [email protected] or +1 (801) 823-2809.

CR’s Take

I love the Bataflae 32L bag, I think it’s the best travel bag when you have to move lots of gear. Below is the gear inside my Bataflae 32L right now. I’m currently travelling through Florida, Costa Rica and Suriname. I’ve never had a problem with getting this bag onto an airplane as carry-on. As it sits, it’s a solid 40lbs of gear!

I like this bag as it’s a backpack, a rolling bag would be quite cumbersome when travelling to locations that do not have paved paths. This bag itself weighs about 4.5lbs, which is extremely light for a backpack.

There’s no laptop pouch in the 32L, which is ok, as I wouldn’t want 40lbs of gear on top of the laptop if the bag falls that way, the Bataflae 22L does have a laptop sleeve. That being said, every airline I’ve flown with allows a separate laptop/messenger bag, which I use for laptop, headphones, media tools.

There’s no perfect camera bag, as most of us have more than one. If you’re in the market for a versatile gear mover, take a look at the Bataflae line of bags.
