NYT: Only Canon, Nikon and Sony will survive?

Interesting article from December 20. Says smartphone selfie-shooters are not embracing the mirrorless bodies in the way it was hoped they would take to a somewhat smaller setup. Perhaps they will eventually leave off trying to make a "kinda smaller" camera that is too small for most serious shooting, but still too big for selfie-phone man, and keep making cameras that are the proper size for 2-handed shooting.

Also says the Big 3 will endure but the also-rans like Panasonic, Pentax, Olympus, and even Fuji don't seem like good bets going forward.

Personally I hope Fuji at least makes it. Original sensor tech and an elegant package.

Is there something wrong with my 600 EX-RT (or myself)?

OK guys, I know I'm quite ignorant in photography, so I'd appreciate your help with my issue. I was taking some pictures of my friend, who was sitting on the sofa next to the Christmas tree with some lightning. So, when I was far away (~1 foot) from the tree, flash was working just fine. However, when I was approaching the tree (~ few inches) and pressing the shutter button half-way, the flash got active for 1-2 seconds. I could literally see the light during these 1-2 seconds and it was making some noise (like the one you can sometimes hear from light bulbs). I was not touching the lights with my camera/flash. However, when the Christmas tree lights were off, everything was fine, even when I was close to them. Any thoughts on why it could happen? Is there something wrong with what I was doing or with the flash itself? I was using Canon 5d with 600 EX-RT flash.

Thanks :)

5D Mark III--What is this? Dust, smearing, fibers, . . . ?

Hello, Everyone.

I thought I noticed a dust spot in a photo. I did a wet cleaning with one swab (VisibleDust green swab, VDust Plus liquid), then took a shot at f/16 with a 50mm f/1.2. Threw it into Photoshop, brought the levels to where "dust stuff" could be seen, and this is what I got. Maybe follow-up cleaning could take care of this? Is shipment to Canon advised?

Buy a 5D Mark III or Wait for ??? in 2014

Kind of hoping for a new chip that competes with the Sony/Nikon overall quality. Wait or purchase a 5D MIII? Talk here is that Canon will not give us a new camera in 2014. If true, the question is wait til 2015 sometime, or buy a MIII. Have Mark II, access to several Mark III, at work, but need a personal camera update.

I am a working Pro and have personal experience with all Canon chips and several Nikon chips. So, please, no discussion over C versus N. Thanks.

New Years Eve!

Happy new year CR!
I figured I'd start a thread where we can share our NYE stories and photos. I ended up at a hippie music extravaganza with acts like Splintered Sunlight (photos below - a Grateful Dead tribute band), the Jerry Garcia Band (minus Jerry) and the New Riders of the Purple Sage. Not my normal gig but a fun time nonetheless. Here's a couple photos:

1dx file name error *Solved*

Hi guys!

I have changed the name of my 1dx files in camera too 1dx_****, and I did that the first day I got it, it has worked a year and half alomst, but now, for some reason beyond me all my files are named simply, dx_***. I checked in camera to see if I have bumped or deleted the "1" but no, in camera it still says 1dx_****, I have tried both slots, loads of different memory cards, and when looking at the files in Finder (mac) they are named dx_**** so it isn't Lr that screws up. I deleted the name in camera and wrote it again, it stays 1dx_****, but the files themselves are STILL named dx_****

How is this possible?

**EDIT** I solved it, but leave the topic if anyone else experiences this, I had changed my color space from sRGB to AdobeRGB, and seem to be the cause. Changed it back to sRGB and it still works.

I would still like to know why, and if I can shoot AdobeRGB and still name my files what I want.

BushHawk shoulder mount

Hi Fellow Canonistas

Happy 2014!
Has anyone on the forum got any experience of the BushHawk shoulder mount? There doesn't seem to be much recent traffic relating to it on any blogs/forums.

As I alluded on another thread, I feel that it should be ideal for tracking fast-moving racing cars at slow shutter speeds. But I have a couple of concerns/queries:
1) What's its maximum load rating (my 1DX/ Sigma 120-300 2.8S weighs almost 12lb in US-speak)?
2) I've seen some mixed reports on the reliability of the shutter release cables/connections - anyone able to confirm/deny?
3) What's their support like? I completed their web query form back in October and got an instant "thanks for your query - we'll get back to you shortly" type response and have heard nothing since. (Have they gone under?)

As a Kiwi, I'm be a long way from any physical support, so need some assurances before committing.

Cheers!
Jim

5D Mark III rear joystick came off?!

Hi everyone...just sharing an experience. The other day I was shooting around a relative's house and I noticed the the rear joystick had popped off. After a few frantic minutes, I was able to find it on the floor, near my bag (presumably it came off while taking it out of the bag). I was able to pop it back on and now it functions fine. I even applied a bit of pressure to see if it would come off easily and it held fine. The only issue is that the weather/rubber seal around the button tore. I think the button comes from the factory snapped on just as I re-did it and a little help from the rubber sealing. The tear is not noticeable until very very close inspection. I am sending my camera is for a CPS routine cleaning and will instruct them about this issue and told them to quote me a repair price to replace the seal.

I saw similar topics here: http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=7959.0
and

I just wanted to share the experience. I will keep everyone posted about my dealings with CPS within the following weeks. Who knows? maybe I can humor you all with an outrageous price quote for a piece of rubber, which consists of tons of labor, much like replacing the head gaskets of an engine. Costs $1000 to put in a $20 gasket....or something...

HELP ! Memory card compatibility for 1D mark III ?

Hello all ! And happy New Year (just 2 hours remain in France to start the New Year…) !

I just booked a 1D mark III to use it as a back-up body for my 5D mark III, especially for wildlife when environmental and climate conditions are bad. But I thought too late that my memory cards might not be compatible for this old venerable camera.
I have CF UDMA7 (1000x, 32 GB and 16 GB), CF UDMA6 (600x, 16 GB) and SDHC class 10 (600x, 32 GB and 16 GB).

Are they compatible ? If not, what shall I buy for CF and SDHC ?

Thank you for your help. I am getting really anxious…

Regards,
Stef.

Quality of Zeiss Lenses

I regularly read lens tests in German Photomagazines. They are supposed to be the worlds best. My question is: How can Canon rumors forum tell me that Zeiss 50 mm Makro is a extremely good lens when ColorFoto tell me that the contrast in the corners are so low that the lensquality is below average and do not even get the "Digital Empfohlen" not recommended for digital photograpy. And in addition no autofocus and very expensive???? Only a zeiss 135 mm lens get the very best remarks.

Just bought a 70-200 f/2.8L IS II - A Few Questions

I finally sold my non-IS 70-200 and updated to this amazing piece of glass. So far I am incredibly impressed with the image quality it produces on both my 5D2 and 5D3. I just have a few questions regarding the proper use of some of the switches:

- I have heard in the past that it is not good for a lens to switch from the image stabilization off when the camera is powered on. Does it matter if I switch image stabilization modes from 1 to 2 when the camera is powered up, or should I turn the camera off before I make the switch?

- Another thing I noticed is that there is a slight wiggle, or a bit of movement left and right, when the lens is attached securely to the camera body. Is this normal to expect this slight movement?

Thanks!

Which Lens for Ring Photos?

I'm a Wedding Photographer who's used other lenses to photograph rings and then cropped them with good results. However, I think it's time to grab the 100mm f2.8 for this job. What would you all suggest? The 2.8L or is the non-L good enough? Does the L version justify the doubled price? Any other macro lens recommendations? I don't do any other macro photography other than my ring photos, so I'd love ideas.

Thank You in advance!

My current lineup:

5DM3
50mm 1.4
12-24mm
24-105mm f4 (great lens, but not sure why I still have it)
24-70mm mk2
70-200mm f2.8 mk2
135mm f2L

Quadcopter photography anyone?

Dang ad on here got me to purchase a quadcopter. Wondering if anyone else on here has used one for photography much. Could be rather fun obviously.

Wondering what the best camera option even is, least for the stills side. Gopro seems best video option but for stills not so much with just JPGs. I gather the phantom copters can lift an eos M but not sure with what lens beyond a pancake in weight. Sort of sucks looking into all the small camera options, knowing next to nothing about all of them.

Review: Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 1:1 Macro VC USD

Hello everyone. I have just completed my most recent review of the Tamron 90mm VC Macro lens. This is a great option for someone who doesn't have the money to spend on the Canon 100L Macro. Take a look here if you are interested:

http://www.dustinabbott.net/2013/12/tamron-sp-90mm-f2-8-di-macro-11-vc-usd-review/

There are many, many pictures included along with my typical real world review of the handling, functionality, and performance of the lens. Thanks for looking!
