<p><strong>2014 Winter Olympics

</strong>We’re told that the replacement to the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS will be making its way into the hands of select photographers at the Sochi games in February, 2014. It was unknown if an announcement of the lens would happen beforehand or if it would be used as the final test bed for the replacement lens.</p>
<p>I’m not too sure how many people would put down their 200-400′s for one of these, but the mobility factor may make it worthwhile in certain situations.</p>
<p>A grain of salt on this one, it’s from a new source.</p>

6D can't be this bad can it?

I'd like to get a 6D until I save up and can easily afford the Mark III, and can easily replace it if the worst happens (lost/stolen/etc) but all I hear about is how bad the video is. I've watched tons of videos and I can't really judge how bad it is. I see videos with stuff/situations i'd never shoot (far away buildings/roofs/powerlines) and it looks terrible, but then I watch videos where there's plenty of brick buildings and walls around and they look just fine. Some people say shooting at lowest sharpness and adding back if needed in post helps, some say that's not true at all. I'll probably be shooting a lot of events, people/shirts/inside of buildings, altho I don't wanna be afraid to go outside and shoot from time to time, is it that bad? BTW this will be my first camera, but I don't want the GH3, Sony A7, Nikon, etc, just wanna stick to Canon for the most part, but high ISO and easier focus in dark is important so i'm kinda screwed, only have M2/M3/6D as my options it seems.

Phottix Mitros+ Flash first impressions

Yesterday I received 2 Phottix Mitros+ flashes direct from Phottix in Hong Kong. I couldn't find much first-hand info on them before buying, so I was hesitant to take a chance, but in case somebody else is contemplating them or finding this thread through a search, let me report - these are the real deal.

I'm coming from a 580 II + PocketWizard Flex + AC3 setup. The setup has worked fine, but I would get so annoyed with carrying around the PW's, spare batteries for them, etc. The idea of having it all be built-in was just too tempting. Why didn't I just go for the 600EX? Well, the great thing about the PW setup is that it also let me trigger manual flashes or studio lights. In the case of my AlienBee, the PW AC9 even allowed remote power adjustment from the camera using the AC3. I wanted to keep this flexibility, and the Phottix system is compatible with their other, cheaper triggers.

I haven't done any extensive shooting yet, but I did test the following:
2 Mitros+ flashes
Odin transmitter
Strato II receiver

In a word - everything works as intended. I was able to get things up and running in a few minutes without using the manual. After a few initial stumbles (likely caused by not reading the manual), everything got set up and fired every time. I had the Strato II on an old manual Sunpak flash, using either a Mitros+ or the Odin as a transmitter, etc. Everything just worked.

The build quality is good, there are cables, accessories, carrying pouch, foot, and even a little clip-on diffuser. Everything feels solid. Definitely not ebay-grade Chinese knockoff territory.

I'm a little disappointed that there isn't a dome type diffuser that's compatible with these, at least not on the Phottix site. The provided clip-on one does a tiny bit of diffusion for direct flash, but it doesn't make the light go everywhere like the dome type. In any case, since Phottix sells dome diffusers for Canon/Nikon flashes, I expect they will eventually make one for their own. Also they have this thing:http://www.phottix.com/en/phottix-cloth-soft-flash-diffuser.html.

Overall, I'm pretty excited to get rid of all the PW's. I plan to use these at a party this Saturday, so I can report back with real-world findings.

Better than PocketWizards: No separate units to mess with
Worse than PocketWizards: No remote power adjustment for AlienBees. Power tweaking with the PW AC3 is quicker and more intuitive than any LCD.

Better than Canon: cheaper, provides remote second curtain, can trigger studio/manual strobes using cheap compatible triggers.

Photography Composition Basics

I know many artists and photographers have what I believe to be a more "enhanced" understanding of what is pleasing to the eye. But some of us "engineering" types, though we know beauty when we see it, we can't explain why it is appealing and may need a little extra help.

I ran across this video from AcademyPhotography and wanted to share. It helped me understand the "why" of beauty as it relates to the brain and gives some examples of how to incorporate that into photography to achieve the desired reaction. Not an in-depth video by any means, but I think it shares good explanations not often covered that would benefit photographers looking to improve their craft.

Buying a Samyang 14mm f/2.8 in Nikon mount to use w/ adapter. Any comments?

Hi,

I am planning to buy a Samyang 14mm f/2.8 lens next may to use with a Canon 6D. Since there are no electronic contacts between the lens and the camera and I will have to manually set apperture and meter using the stop down technique, I am planning to buy the lens in Nikon mount and use it with an adapter in my 6D, so that in case I decide to change systems in the future, I do not have to buy this lens again. Would anyone recommend me against doing this? Why? Will I have any problem using this lens with an adapter on my 6D?

Yours sincerely,
Leandro

Becoming a wedding photographer.

Hi I've just bought a 6D and a 24-70, I've been doing photography about 6 months and really want to make that next step...

I kid, I kid.

I've been doing photography as a hobby since my EOS1000 (the 35mm one, not the digital) so thats for some 20 years probably. I've never aspired to be professional. I've had a long learning curve (film was expensive) and probably quite a bit of a way to go, in terms of portraiture posing etc at least (my technical and camera craft ability, I think, is pretty well sorted)

Along the way, I did a 3 year communications and media degree (from the university of Mickey Mouse for all it's been worth, hey kids.. don't study media, really!) and a 2 year technical college vocational course in television and video production. I've worked these last 6 years as a cameraman / VT editor for Europes largest publishing group, regularly doing broadcast work of various descriptions, so I have plenty of current experience lighting, directing, setting up scenes etc. For four years before that I worked at a Univeristy setting up TV studios, Photography Studios, Apple Mac produciton labs, doing equipment hire etc. Before that I worked in photo-retail for around 5 years selling everything from Olympus Stylus to Leica MP's, and the first few waves of DSLRS as well. I know it's not hands on photography, and I know more than anybody how different the skills are, I'm just making the point that I'm not 'uncle bob'.

I've always been asked to do video favours for folk or mates rates etc, and if the work will benefit me (financially, developmentally, or just feeling good) then I'll usually do it.

I have a few friend getting married this year, and they've asked me to take a look at various 'professionals' work.

I'm shocked. There are a lot of Uncle Bobs and Auntie Robertas masquearading as photographers out there.
When told the money they charge my jaw hits the floor. I don't think 'I want some of that action', I think 'I want to give folk better for their money'.

So I'm considering starting up a part-time photography business.

I'm really just after critiques of my business model. I don't need or want any more or any new gear just yet, and I don't need to ask anybodies advice on what I would like to move on to, so please don't respond with that kind of answer.

My Plan.

£250 wedding photos.

And thats it.

I turn up for 1 hour, after all the church stuff is done, and before the party begins. I do you 10 shots. Classic ordinary shots. The couple. The grooms gang. The brides gang. The Parents and the Couple. Everybody. Cheers, see you later.

No bridesmaid peeking out behind trees.
No close ups of rings on fingers.
No annoying the minister.
No getting ready shots.

Just a simple, straightforward collection of classically posed group and couple shots, in a nice setting. Correctly exposed. In colour. Nothing tw@tty Twee or convoluted.

Cheap. Limited hassle on the day.

And a CD passed over with all rights relinquished, the couple can print share canvas post any of the images as many times as they want wherever they want. I'll recommend they use Loxleys rather than boots of course, but no faffing about.

Basic. Solid. No packages. No Gold, Silver or Bronze.

I think i can make money at this, as a lot of folk don't have £2000 for a wedding photographer, or who don't want to be in front of a camera all day.

Do you think there is much of a market for this?

I plan to do a studio skills course at a respected local college, brush up on my photographic lighting practise and learn a bit more about posing people. So I'm not so arrogant to think that it's dead easy, I bring a lot to the table already and I think I've a grasp of what else I need to know.

It would be a sideline initially, and if things take off I might then invest more time in it, or more money in gear, but for now, I think it's a marketable idea.

Is anybody doing anything similar or disagree on strong terms?

Please please please keep gear out of this thread. I may have questions in the future, but this is a business post.

And so I DID - My 1st BIG WHITE LENS

Just got my 24-70 2.8 L ii. Got some questions.

Got it yesterday. First surprise. It may or may not be a good one. The box is black and grey, not white with a red strip I was expecting. The box still has canon logo, UPC code, serial number, etc. Does it mean anything? There is a canon USA warranty card with the correct serial number. I got it through Buydig.com. I just want to make sure I could get the $300 rebate. Forgive me if my question sounds ignorant. I don't usually buy new.

Second question. What's the purpose of adding a lock for 24mm? Any real world utility for it?

Third. The ring feels stiff. It should loosen up with more use, right?

5Diii in camera HDR actually comes in useful...

So I shot a wedding a few weeks ago where the dress had these netting flourishes... I did my usual thing of hang the dress up somewhere with a far amount of natural light and press the button. Only the way I was doing it was burning out those netted flourishes. I just thought I'd do a few different exposures and put them together in photoshop. THEN I REMEMBERED THE IN CAMERA HDR! It's not the most accurate or the best way to do things, obviously (and it cuts about 5mm off the edges of your pic), but I thought I'd give it a try and the bloody thing worked.

So yeah, anyone else had experiences where "novelty" in camera settings have actually come in useful?

This is pretty much straight from the camera (via lightroom as I shoot RAW)

I have since done a little photoshopping and taken out that bed that was inconveniently placed in the bedroom I was shooting in, bloody inconsiderate people. the finished photoshopped image is on my site if anyone is actually interested (which I doubt anyone is that bored) in seeing it?

What's my next purchase?

Hello Collective Minds of CR-

I could use some insight into what my next purchase should be. Currently have a 5D3, gripped, 16-35 II, 70-200 II, and nifty 50, along with a 430EX II, an ST-E3, 600EX, and 2x III on the way. I currently shoot for my college paper (a lot of sports right now, but also your typical PJ/editorial stuff) and also shoot portraiture, wildlife, and travel stuff for myself. Over the summer, I hope to intern with a wedding photog, or a publication.

I'm torn over what the next big purchase should be. The 24-70 II is a top contender... perfect for basketball and even has a place for near shots in the end zone for football, and I can see it's utility with the rest of my PJ stuff as well as making a great travel lens. Naturally, it would make a good wedding lens if I go that route.

But then again, I could also see a lot of utility in an 85 1.2 for portraiture, low light travel, and such. Again, it too has a role in weddings.

Lastly, there is the option of saving up a bit more and buying a 2nd 5d3. Granted, for sports, the 1DX is worlds better, and I love it after renting/borrowing it several times BUT for everything else I do, the 5D3 performs very well and is still acceptable for sports for me. Bottom line, I can't afford to go 1DX right now. If I end up a full time sports shooter, obviously I'd trade up to 1DX's though.

For what it's worth, I do intend to grab the 300 II off Canon Refurb in the spring.

So usually, easy call...lens is better buy than body. But given my situation I'm unsure. Then of course, it's which lens.

Your help, as always, is greatly anticipated and appreciated.

Speedlite guide number question

Hey guys, I have a question.

Let's look at an entry 430EX speedlite, according to Canon, the 43 is the guide number (43 = f x distance in meter).

My question is why this entry speedlite has larger guide number than the pro class Nikon SB-910 (guide number only 34) let alone the 600EX which is almost double the Nikon.

Why is it so far off?

Thank you

Must Watch EPIC Volvo Commercial by Andreas Nilsson

I don't if this video is made with Canon gear but I don't know where else to post it ... this is an EPIC video made by Andreas Nilsson ... consider that Van Dame is 53 years old, cannot for his life, yet the director (Andreas Nilsson) saw the potential in the aging actor, the trucks, the scenery, the music and everything else about this short video ... a truly EPIC vision by the director ... anyway here is the description by USA today:
"The new film is a simple but breathtaking premise: directed by Andreas Nilsson, it shows Van Damme standing on the wing mirrors of two moving trucks. As the camera pans back, the trucks slowly move apart, until Van Damme is performing a perfect splits.
The stunt was captured in one take with no breaks, following three days of rehearsal by the production team, so the final version could be captured within a 15 minute window when the morning light was right. It was filmed on a deserted airfield in Spain. "When I saw the storyboard, I thought it looked amazing," Van Damme apparently commented while on the set. "It's very majestic and very powerful." Yes it is, Jean-Claude, yes it is.

looking for feedback on choosing a 70-200 for weddings.

Hi all,
So things are picking up with the weddings and I am thinking I need a 70-200 sooner than later. As of now I am working with a 5d mark 3, back up rebel, 17-40L,24-70 2.8L II, 50 1.4, 85 1.8, 100 2.8L, and a 600 EX-RT. What I have found over the last few weddings is that I need a little more reach. Usually I shoot small wedding so no problem, but things are growing. Due to the recent purchase of the new 24-70, money is tight. I was thinking about saving for the canon 2.8 non IS or 4IS as they are both within reach, thoughts? If it helps, I feel I have a pretty steady hand and I love shallow DOF. Based on this I was thinking the 2.8 non IS would be best?

Cropping, image quality and ISO.

Im not the most technical person around so I wondered about this question a friend asked about cropping and image quality.

If I have a full frame camera, an aps-c and aps-h and take the same shot with the same lens same light etc printed at the same size say A3, what would give the best image quality when taking say a shot in poor light...

The full frame shot at ISO3200 would need to be cropped so degrading the image quality, fine detail etc but has a two stop advantage over the aps-c and one stop over the aps-h who would need to shoot at higher iso to match the full frames speed so degrading the image quality. The aps-c needed no cropping but its ISO performance is worse and the aps-h mid way between the two. So I guess a 1DX, 1D4 and 70D for arguments sake. I said id use the full frame as id get the shot I wouldnt get with the others as the image quality would be so bad anyway without any cropping even with post production.

"Your camera takes great photos" and other peeves

I want to hear from everyone on the most annoying things people commonly say to them about their cameras, lenses, other gear, images and photography in general. My personal favorite is "wow, your camera takes great pictures," or, while looking at my images, "you have a great camera."

I used to launch into an explanation of how much time and energy I have invested in improving my technique and artistic vision, but found the results dissatisfying (common response: "well sure you have to know how to use it"). So I just accede, "yes, it's easier to get good pictures with a good camera."

Canon Extension Tube has S/N?

I have received the 2 Canon extension tubes EF12II & EF25II. The only writing on the tubes was "1301" on the EF25II and "1201" on the EF12II. So my question are these S/N?
On the box there are several more writings, for the EF25II:
CZ 23522000DB0107
9199A001 [AA]
EAN/JAN 4 960999 204307
UPC 0 13803 03560 5
Searching the web EAN is probably Electronic Article Number, JAN is Japanese Article Number and UPC is Uniform Part Code.
no "1301" in any of the above.

New Technology Coming to Cinema EOS

<p><strong>From the interview with Mr Onda

</strong>Reading a bit between the lines during the interview with <a href="https://twitter.com/DSLRinformer" target="_blank">Dan Chung</a> and Mr Onda, it appears a few new things are coming to the Cinema EOS line and probably to EOS DSLRs as well.</p>
<p>The first being CFast 2.0, a version of Compact Flash announced back in 2008. SanDisk <a href="http://www.sandisk.com/products/memory-cards/cfastpro/" target="_blank">currently makes CFast cards that are capable of writing at 350MB/s</a>. These cards will be needed to record 4K RAW video. It sounds like Canon will be moving towards CFast in their next Cinema EOS cameras, and perhaps DSLRs as well.</p>
<p>Secondly, it seems there’s a possibility of a full frame Cinema EOS camcorder coming down the pipeline.  While you can currently get full frame 4K recording (16:9 crop from the full frame sensor) with the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/855962-REG/Canon_EOS_1D_C_EOS_1D_C_4K_Cinema.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">EOS-1D C</a>, the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/889545-REG/Canon_EOS_C100_EF_Cinema.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">C100</a>, <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/839220-REG/Canon_5779B002_C300_Cinema_EOS_Camcorder.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">C300</a> and <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/855975-REG/Canon_EOS_C500_Cinema_EOS.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">C500</a> are Super35 sensor cameras.</p>

<strong>Newsshooter talks C100 Dual Pixel CMOS AF with Canon’s Mr Onda

</strong>Dan Cheung sits down with the head of Canon’s Cinema EOS product line to talk about the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2013/11/canon-to-offer-dual-pixel-cmos-af-upgrade-for-the-eos-c100-digital-video-camera/" target="_blank">C100 dual pixel CMOS AF upgrade</a> that was recently announced.</p>
<p>Mr Onda clarifies that the update to the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/889545-REG/Canon_EOS_C100_EF_Cinema.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">Cinema EOS C100</a> is firmware and a “service adjustment”, as it and the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/839220-REG/Canon_5779B002_C300_Cinema_EOS_Camcorder.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">EOS C300</a> already have Dual Pixel CMOS AF capabilities at the hardware level.</p>
<p>They also talk about lenses and RAW video and why they think the “lower range” cameras don’t need the RAW video capabilities that the C500 has. It’s also fun to watch Mr Onda discuss <a href="http://www.magiclantern.fm/" target="_blank">Magic Lantern</a> and the actual hardware capabilities of their cameras like the EOS 5D Mark III.</p>
<p>An interesting point is Mr Onda says they plan to introduce STM technology into “L” lenses. Although he mentions that developing an L lens takes a lot longer to do than the current STM lenses.</p>

<p><strong>New EOS-1 to launch in 2014

</strong>According to NL, Canon plans to launch a new EOS-1 in 2014, around the same time as a rumored Nikon D4x. This camera will be Canon’s first foray into the high megapixel realm for a DSLR. There will also be lenses to match launching at the same time as an EOS-1D Xs (name to be decided).</p>
<p>Apparently Canon does not want to launch this new camera the same way they did with the EOS-1D X. If you remember, Canon announced their flagship before Nikon’s D4, only to watch the D4 get announced and begin shipping before we actually saw an EOS-1D X at retailers.</p>
