16-35 2.8 vs 70-200 4 on 650D

Dear People,

I would love to hear your opinion. Any help will be highly appreciated.

Right now I have a 650d ( T4i ) and a 50 1.8. I would need a new lens in order to have a wider range... for the future im planing to go full frame and buy 16-36 and 70-200 f4, however I have a problem deciding which one to buy first, as I have a crop camera the 16-35 the real usage of it being wide seems to be a bit wasted, which as a shame since my first priority is architecture and landscape. Of course I also shoot with joy people, animals in the zoo etc. What would you say is a better choice for now ? Which could be a better all a rounder ? Once again, thank you in advance.

What's Next for Canon?

<p><strong>Not even a whisper

</strong>For the moment, there doesn’t seem to be much chatter coming from the Canon camp. We had previously been told that Canon would not be announcing anything else in 2013. Although, we still thought we would see the Canon EOS M2 which has appeared in some DPP software literature.</p>
<p>There still seems to be a lot of EOS M stock out there, as we keep seeing deals for the camera come about. There is a possibility Canon is waiting until stock levels are near depleted before they make an announcement. Christmas season is coming up, and we’re getting a bit late to announce a product for the Christmas season unless it ships right away.</p>
<p>As far as the big EOS stuff, we’re still holding with no DSLR or lenses in 2013, although a development announcement is always possible. I don’t think Canon has ever done a development announcement without announcing an official new product along side it.</p>
<p>I expect 2 camera bodies at the most in Q1 of 2014, one being a new EOS M camera. The other being an entry level type DSLR. I think it’ll be early spring before we see the really exciting stuff from Canon.</p>
<p>I am also told that new Cinema EOS camera(s) are likely to appear before NAB in April 2014. There has been nothing in regards to specs or which bodies would see an update.</p>
<p>More to come….</p>

High-ISO confusion

I have a Canon 550D that I use for concert photography. I don't really like the high-ISO performance of this camera so I am looking for a replacement. When I read the reviews of DPReview Canon cameras are improved in IQ with every generation. However, when I take a look at the RAW ISO graphs it shows exactly the opposite. Here is an example:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos600d/10

The 550D beats the 600D, the 600D beats the 650D and the 650D beats the 700D. The 550D is even better then the 60D which is newer and more pro-like. What the heck?!

When I checked DxO, the 550D also beats every newer Canon camera:

http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare-Camera-Sensors

How come the reviews say that the image quality is improved, while statistic 'evidence' says otherwise?

100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM vs. 70-200mm f/4 IS USM w/ estender

I am going to Africa in February and I know I will need a long range lens for my Canon T2i. I have a 70-200mm f/4 IS USM. Weight is an issue on the trip. I thought about renting a 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM but I hate to leave the 70-200 at home since I own it. I would be willing to buy an extender for the 70-200 but I wonder which will give me better wildlife photos. In other words, is the difference (if any) between my 70-200 with an extender and a 100-400 so pronounced that I should rent the 100-400 and leave the 70-200 at home? Also, if the extender route is acceptable, which one should I get? Thanks.π

I'm going crazy over here! What Canon lens for fashion/portraits???

Okay, so I own 24-105, and I had plenty of help from you guys, and I realized that getting a macro is a must... but what then???

So, my ideal choice would be 85mm 1.8, a macro, 35mmL, 135mm L, 24-70 2.8 II and 70-200 2.8 IS II.

But I can't afford them all, not to mention I plan on getting a MF camera in the future, but even then I'd like to own a Canon, as it does have it's strengths.

On my 24-105 I mostly shoot at 60-70mm, 105mm, 35mm, in that order.

Do I get a 100mm USM macro and another lens? Or just 100mm L macro?

So: 100mm USM macro + 70-200mm 4L (how sharp is it? especially compared or 2.8 is II?)
or 100mm USM macro + save up for 135L
or 100mm USM macro + 85mm 1.8 (not only is 85mm 1.2 pricey, but it is also distorted, so no tnx)
or 100mm USM macro + 50mm (I had a 1.8, it gave wonderful images, but I couldn't use it professionally, and the 1.4 has horrible distortion, I can't have that)

or just the 100mm macro L

I hate distortion, it has given me so much head ache on 24-105. And I am very fond of sharpness, there is no such thing as "too sharp" for me.

What I wouldn't like is a lens that has lots of micro sharpness, but little contrast overall.

And please, please don't take wide-open bokeh or sharpness into consideration, I NEVER shoot wide open. ;D

Now, I know I should test these ,but I can't afford to rent them all, not to mention that it takes using a lens for a while in order to see it's strengths and flaws, so that's why I appreciate you experience so much. ;)

So, is the L 100 Macro worth it? Or shall I get a 100 USM macro and another lens? Perhaps get the USM macro and save up for 135mm? :o

28-35 prime for T3i

Hello, everyone! :D I'm new to this forum! I have a 50/1.8 and the kit lens for my T3i apsc body. i found 50mm is a little narrow inside rooms. so I am considering a prime lens 28-35. Anyone has experience in Canon 35/2 USM (or with IS), new SIGMA 30/1.4 and CZJ flektogon 35/2.4?
I am not bothered focus speed, but never try manual lens before. Although many think CZJ is good, Flektogon price keeps going high, is 250$ worthy? SIGMA has largest aperture, while people always complain about its quality control. For canon 35, it's from canon, original. but nothing attract me particularly. So far, what's all I know.
Hope to hear your suggestion, Thx!! :)

Luckiest Shot - Please Share

I'm sure if I ever visit Loch Ness, the Monster will appear when I have a fisheye lens on my camera. Okay in all seriousness, I frequently have the wrong lens on my camera, or sadly, both cameras, but every now and then, I get lucky and it all comes together.

I was leaving St. Marks NWR here in Florida one morning, when I saw something cross the road. I raced up to where I thought I saw it and jumped out of my car. After walking up and down the road for several minutes, I found what I was looking for - one of their elusive bobcats. I say elusive because everyone else seems to see them, but this is the only one I've seen in 5 years of going there at least 2-3 times a month. I was very fortunate to have my 400 f/5.6 on my camera and grabbed the shot below. It was a tough shot because of the briars and I had to manual focus, without IS, but I was pretty pleased with the end result:

Removal of IR Highpass filter

Hi all,

How many of you guys have removed the IR highpass filter in your DSLR. I have an old, abused, well loved but unused 450D sitting around and i would love dearly to breath some new life into it. I have tried to sell it but to be honest the street value of it (lensless) is not worth me selling.... this was my first camera, and well, i love the little fella! :) As such, I'm looking into getting the IR filter removed....

How many of you guys have done this? any advice? I don't think i will replace it with another filter (e.g. Baader BCF), but am also considering removing the AA filter too (a 450DE one might say). However this would remove the dust-removal feature.... anyone done this? was sensor dust then a problem? :)

Thanks for any advice/experience in this area!

Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS Art Officially Official

HTML:
<p><strong>….. and one more try

</strong>Sigma has officially announced the <a href="http://sigma-global.com/en/lenses/cas/product/art/a_24_105_4/" target="_blank">24-105mm f/4 DG OS Art series lens</a>.</p>
<p><b>RONKONKOMA, NY — October 16, 2013</b> — Sigma Corporation of America a leading researcher, developer, manufacturer and service provider of some of the world’s most impressive lines of lenses, cameras and flashes, today announced its newest addition to the Sigma Art line of lenses for full-frame cameras, the 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM.</p>
<p>True to its categorization as a Sigma Art lens, the new 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM is designed for artistic expression and top-notch image quality. This versatile lens covers the basic shooting range from wide to medium tele with an inner focusing system that eliminates front lens rotation, enhancing the lens stability and allowing the use of circular polarizing filters. It also boasts a constant aperture of F4, and contains Sigma’s proprietary Optical Stabilizer (OS) technology to compensate for camera shake. Moreover, it was designed to surpass the required quality inspection of every Global Vision lens with Sigma’s own modulation transfer function (MTF) “A1” measuring system to create new optical standard to align with the high-spec cameras on today’s market.</p>
<p><!--more-->“For many years, Sigma users have been seeking a standard zoom lens in this range,” said Mark Amir-Hamzeh, president of Sigma Corporation of America. “The 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM is yet another example of Sigma listening to its users and delivering new and innovative products with the highest image quality.”</p>
<p>Amir-Hamzeh added that this new lens combines the largest possible fixed aperture to zoom ratio that will maintain optimal integrity for many kinds of photography, including landscapes, architecture, portraiture and still-life. With a minimum focusing distance of 45cm and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.6, this lens is also excellent for close-up photography.</p>
<p>High-performance glass elements, including SLD, FLD, which is equal to fluorite, and glass-molded single- and double-sided aspheric lenses have been included into the optical system to prevent aberration, field curvature, distortions and color aberration. The 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM lens is also able to suppress chromatic aberration very effectively at the telephoto-end, and can achieve superior image quality throughout the zoom range. Unlike lenses with similar specifications, this lens overcomes low peripheral brightness. Although it is designed for full frame cameras, it also works with APS-C sensors, giving an increase to focal length.</p>
<p>The lens’ Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures a silent, high-speed auto focus function and enables full-time manual focusing capability. The 24-105mm is also compatible with Sigma’s USB dock allowing photographers to update its firmware and change focus parameters using Sigma’s Optimization Pro software. It is also compatible with Sigma’s recently announced Mount Conversion Service.</p>

Off Brand: Sony Announces the A7 & A7R Full Frame Mirrorless Cameras

<p><strong>Sony A7 & A7R Full Frame Mirrorless Cameras

</strong>I realize these aren’t made by Canon, but I believe this is a significant enough development in photography equipment to be worthy of a mention here.</p>
<p>For the last few years, I have heard continuously from readers how much they desired a full frame mirrorless camera kit that didn’t cost what a small car does (sorry Leica). Many times I’ve been asked if Canon is developing such a camera, and judging by Canon’s lacklustre commitment to the EOS M line, it appears that definitely is not coming to fruition anytime soon.</p>
<p>Sony has been a leader in moving the mirrorless segment forward, and these two new full frame cameras will only bolster their position in a growing (albiet slowly) market. These cameras are capable of taking lenses from Nikon, Leica, Zeiss and yes, even Canon. You can get one and grow into the system even if you don’t currently have any Sony lenses by using great adaptors. Sony plans to have 15 FE mount lenses in the lineup by 2015. That is the type of commitment consumers want in a system.</p>
<p>The megapixel debate? As I’ve said previously, I used to not care about megapixel count until I used the Nikon D800, the files are remarkable and I’m more than happy to have the extra pixels. Canon is not only behind Nikon in this regard, they’re now getting trumped by the 36.4mp A7R.</p>
<p>I have preordered the A7R and I think a lot of Canon folks will be following suit.</p>
<p>Your move Canon…..</p>

70-300mm IS USM or splurge for Tamron 70-200mm VC

Hi all
Unfortunately my house burnt down and I lost all my dad's old telephoto lenses.
In 2 months I'm off to Africa and Kenya, and am in the market for a Telephoto lens. This lens would generally be used for general needs, sports, landscaping, and particularly for Safari when I'm over there. I don't wanna take a mediocre lens over there and waste the opportunity
I'm just a pro-hobbyist, but I've come down to either going the cheap route, that is just buy the old Canon, or pay more for a decent lens which I can use for many years to come, and the day may come where I may go Full frame? The prices are 350 vs 1050... (AU)
Anyone have any experience with the Canon 70-300mm IS USM? Or any other suggestions?
My current gear is 600d, Tamron 17-50mm (Non-VC, highly underated lens), Nifty fifty
Thanks!

Protective filter for 24-70 II - standard or thin?

Getting ready to order my 24-70 f/2.8 II and want to include a protective filter with my order. I haven't read about any vignetting with this lens using a standard filter but want to make sure I don't need the thin version. Can someone please confirm if a standard filter works without vignetting?

Looking at either:
- B+W 82mm XS-Pro UV MRC-Nano 010M Filter
- B+W 82mm UV Haze MRC 010M Filter

Thanks

How would yall shoot horse flag racing.

flag race at westeren horse show

So I got a job shooting this "sport" this weekend. The weather is supposed to be reasonably nice, partly cloudy. I'm not 100% sure that what you see in the video is exactly how the event will go down, but I don't think it is far off either.

My settings and gear will be as follows: 5D mkiii, 70-200mm f/2.8L Is mkii, Canon 1.4 teleconvertor mkii. Maybe I'll need to the convertor... maybe not...

When I shoot out in the sun and a cloud passes over head, I will shoot in Aperture priority. Yes... manual... but I really don't pay that much attention to whether the sun is bright or not... so aperture priority it is. I was also thinking 640 iso and f/4 with the teleconvertor. The other day when I was shooting football, my shutter speeds ranged from 1/3000 to 1/6000 give of take... so I think that is a good option at the moment.

However... when I shoot football, I can keep my subject in focus using AI Servo and I don't lose them too often. But when I am shooting a person and a horse, I don't want a shallow depth of field with the horse in focus and the the person blurred. I'm not sure the Camera will be able to distinguish which subject I want actually in focus. Per the depth of field calculator, at f/4, 200mm, and 30ft away, I will have 1.61 feet of depth of field. I'm guessing, but I think I need at least 4 feet of DOF to definitely get both. If I shoot at f/8 with the 200/30... then I have 3.2 ft... and I think that might be my best bet. That will probably mean that I will have to kick the iso up to 2500... but maybe it will be sunny-ish... and I won't have to go that high.

I do plan on doing post in LR4, so I can remove the grain... though I am annoyed I have to.

Now that that is figured out... where do I position myself. That circle was crazy boring to look at. I don't want to see the horses ass and the rider going away... so I was thinking of setting up initially to the left of the subject and getting the start, and then the first and 2nd turn... and I know I won't be able to run back to get the final ramming the stick in position... so... yeah. Where do I settle and move to. If they were jumping... ok... side and front... but this is going in a circle.

And I was thinking... oh a low angle shot with me laying on the ground might work... but I not head on because all I would see is the horse... maybe at a side angle. But I think I will just need to get a step stool and shoot at near eye level to get the shot I want.

I also considered doing a 1/30 of a second pan shot so I can get the motion of the legs and hopefully the person nice and sharp...

So if yall have any suggestions, I'm wiling to hear them. I'd like to do a shallow depth of field... blurring out the background and the patrons... but that would definitely have to be done at a 20ish degree angle.

Any help is much appreciated... even just talking it out will help me feel more confident on what I want to do at the event.

6D af tracking: experiences & usage cases

So I've at last bought a 6d and am fine with it because I knew what I was getting and what for. Still, Canon didn't dare to cut tracking completely - so the 6d does have an "ai servo"ish feature. After trying to use it a bit I'm not yet convinced I've got the best settings and handling method and would like to ask for your experiences.

1. Single af point tracking. So far I've found the outer points are bad for single point tracking, certainly worse than my 60d which has crosspoints and also up to +0.5lv light sensitivity. The 6d has trouble locking focus on low contrast areas like horses' foreheads, which also shows in stills shooting but really becomes a problem when trying to track in portrait position. Any different experiences?

2. Multi af point tracking: From 5d2->6d Canon didn't only reduce the af points from 15 (inc. tracking helpers) to 11, but also cut the firmware hook to select focus patterns through Magic Lantern - so you're stuck with either all or one af point.

My short experience indicates that when not tracking an elephant running towards you the 6d does a bad job choosing the af points and for some weird reason tends to ignore the good center point. If "center point with outer point tracking helpers" would work, the close af spacing could be a blessing in disguise - but somehow I found the selection to be rather erratic. Is this due to a not optimized Canon firmware, do I have the wrong settings or was I just unlucky so far?

3. The 5d3 has "af cases" which link the af settings to neat packages. With the 6d, you're on your own to find the best combination for different uses. I was trying to track running horses (from me, to me, parallel to me) - what do you track and what settings do you find work best?

  • Tracking sensitivity: I'm using "responsive" since I try to keep the object in the center af point - what's your experience with multipoint af, is "responsive" too erratic?
  • Accel./decel. tracking: I'm using higher values, or does this in your experience generate a too erratic behavior with the mediocre 6d af points?
  • AI Servo 1st image priority: I'm using "release" because I'd rather get an out of focus shot than lose a good one - or do you find the 6d is reliable enough to determine when the first shot is in focus?

Disclaimer: This thread is intended to help 6d users with tracking and multipoint af, if you don't have something helpful to add feel free to participate in another thread about the 6d's greatness or regressions vs. the 5d3.

Holidays 2013: Where the Heck is Canon?

I wish Canon would:

  • Offer a tiny, retro styled, big sensor mirrorless camera with dials and buttons

    Votes: 17 23.3%
  • Stick to DSLRs and stay the course

    Votes: 48 65.8%
  • Go completely out of the box, like Sony is doing with the QX line. Something wild

    Votes: 2 2.7%
  • Focus on medium format

    Votes: 6 8.2%

I'm a Canon shooter and have been a Canon shooter for decades. I'm ready to buy a camera. But before I go for that 5DM3, I have to say that I'm tempted to jump ship. It seems like there's a lot of innovation happening elsewhere right now (with the 70D being the exception, but video is not my top priority) and Canon seems to be lagging.

Where is the EOSM2???

The idea of having a tiny, pocketable camera that can share lenses with a full featured beast is really appealing. I need to rent an EOSM1 to see if it is really as bad as so many people on YouTube and online claim to judge for myself. But for a while, everything was pointing to an EOSM2, so I've waited. And waited. The EOSM looks nice, but I like buttons and dials for direct access more than pure touch screen ui. And I'd be mainly using it for street photography, where silence is golden, and this camera is not quiet, much less silent.

I'm seriously considering an Olympus EM-1 and the rumored Panasonic GM1 as a combo. Those two bodies can be had for less than a 5DM3, and the M4/3 lens selection rivals Canon, and wins on price. Of course, I won't get the 5D FF low light/high ISO performance. But the other benefits are pretty appealing.

Other manufacturers are about to have a pretty revolutionary week:

  • * Sony has 2 FF mirrorless cameras coming!
    * Fuji has 2 new cameras coming
    * Panasonic is about to announce the world's smallest ILC 4/3 camera
    * Olympus has unveiled the EM1, and it looks to be an amazing camera
    * Nikon (can I say that word here? ;) ) even released the AW1, which sounds pretty cool. Shockproof. Dive proof? Neat!

C'mon Canon!!! I really don't want to give up all of that muscle memory and your wonderful UI. It still fits me best. To say nothing of my glass. Where are you this year? Are the holidays REALLY going to come and go without you? Are we really going to have to wait until 2014? I don't know if I want to wait that long...

70D AutoFocus. Any experience?

I found this video showing the live AF on the 70D. It looks remarkably good, considering the nature of the video and need for good, accurate, quick focus! I was wondering how many others have had positive experiences with this camera.

...I don't own one (I have a 5DM3), but I watch it with great interest just because of the new sensor and focus system. I'm anxious to see what it might do in the FF format.
