Noisy 70-200f4L

I just bought a used 70-200 f4L (non-IS). Got it from a dealer, date code Y, looks brand new. Everything seems to work fine - focus is normally fast, seems accurate, but it's a bit noisy. There's a bit of a "rattle" or "clatter" as it focuses (but the manual focus ring turns very smoothly). It's not a loud noise, but clearly audible a few feet away. I owned one of these awhile back and seem to remember it was very quiet - just a soft swish as it focused. Anyone know if this sound is common for this lens? I don't want to send a good lens back if this is nothing to worry about.

I need some flash advice...

I do mostly "event" photography - just did DragonCon in Atlanta, and I do Daytona Bikeweek and Biketoberfest, Leesburg Bikefest, Sturgis, Laconia, maybe a few other 'Cons if folks ask me. I only do DragonCon regularly.

In the past, I've shot a lot film at these events, shooting Hasselblad 500c/m and Leica M's. Hasselblad sort of dropped by the wayside, as set-up posed shooting was becoming less of what I did, and candids were more the norm. So, I kept plugging away with my trusy M4's and M6's

Flash equipment - I'd keep one M4 set up with a flash rig - basically two 283's in 16x24 Chimera box on a frame. That was the vast part of my shooting, and yes, changing film became damn near performance art in itself.

This year, I said, hey, what the heck, I wont like the quality of the light, but lets shoot with the 7D and a 28/1.8, and I'd augment that with a trusty M

Not happy at all....

So here's where my thinking goes -

I can get a Quantum light for the Canon EOS's - but that will run me about $1300 or so, or a bit more. It will go well in the Chimera rig though. Plus side there is the use of a parabolic reflector and bare bulb. Bare bulb is fantastic for some conditions. I've shot entire weddings with bare bulb and HP-5 film (in the old days...) and it was just fantastic with a 1940's look to the result.

Or, I can maybe just begin to get my feet wet with a Yongnuo YN565ex, or even two of those. My thoughts there are I can also use those in the Chimera rig, and... later on they can be radio slaves. I'd rather do the 565 since I really need a battery pack - screwin' with batteries is one thing I'd rather not have to deal with while shooting, and the quick recycle is a plus.

Or, I can just use the two low voltage shoe 283's in the rig as they are, shoot manually and forget E-TTL. Cheap option, but... I always shoot color negative film, and of course that is forgiving with exposure. I'd generally tend to slightly over expose on purpose when shooting negative film. I can see a lot of testing, and fewer keepers going with the present flash rig.

Gimme some thoughts, shoot me down... I'm up for it so long as I can get pointed in some logical direction. I've got an arsenal of 283's, all low voltage...all been re-capped and adjusted. They work well too with Quantum batteries. Got two of those Chimera rigs - the otheris a box I had cut square on special order so its 18x18 (I think?). Doesn't matter, you can use it on square or 1:1.5 aspect ratio, same great results.

I'm really stuck on carring the box... I just love the effect of a soft broad fill. Its very forgiving when mixed with ambient light, even strong and contrasty ambient light.

And finally, maybe there's options I've missed. Not too fond of Canon lights, seems there are better bang for the buck out there.

The Yongnuo's ... I wonder how they'll hold up. You hear about infant mortality with those, but seemingly if they last past a month or so, they're good to go? Dunno. Last weekend, I shot 50 rolls of Ektar with the M4 and oh... 5000 shots with the 7D. So I'd need something that will hold together ok. I'm actually surprised that the 7D's tiny flash held up actually.

So, thats my story (and I'm stickin' to it!)

I Repaired my own 50mm 1.4, and so can you!

My trusty 50mm 1.4 stopped focusing the other day, and I couldn't even focus manually by turning the ring. I googled the issue and found that many others had experienced the same thing. I never dropped my lens or anything. It seems that all it takes is a bit of pressure on the front focusing element, and a metal part inside will get bent. This can cause the focus mechanism to get stuck.

I got a lot of help from following this guide:
http://image23photographic.blogspot.no/2012/04/fixing-stuck-focus-ring-on-canon-50mm.html

Getting the lens repaired here in norway was close to the cost of a brand new lens, so I figured I had nothing to loose. I have never repaired a lens or anything similar before. If I can do it, odds are you can do it too!

In Milan...Street photography with the 'old' 5D2

I spend three days in Milan using mostly my 5D2 paired with the 24-105L. Its actually quite a nice travel combo if full frame image quality is what you want. As a street tool its probably too heavy and bulky and that old shutter is very very loud..but that's all I had and sometimes I think we fuss too much about this and that and what we have will probably work perfectly...more of my street images made in Milan can be seen here at....http://thelazytravelphotographer.blogspot.com/2013/09/three-days-in-milanday-one.html

Canon 70D review with raw files for download

Hey, just finished my review of the Canon 70D. There are some awesome things about it and yes the auto focus is one of them. Though not everything is perfect. Check out the description or the end of the video for a link to the raw files so you can check out the results for yourself.

Underwater DSLR Cases

Just out of curiosity, how many of the CR regulars own and/or have used an underwater case with their DSLR? What has the experience been like?

Based on their prices (new and used) I doubt I'll be in the market for one anytime soon. Additionally, I can't think of many occasions during which I'd use it, but I think it would be fun to play with. Please share with the community if you have had any experiences with one.

Need help on choosing a Cam for stills only "newb" .. Please!!

Ok, thanks for checking out my post.

I am looking for a dslr to do fashion blogging... Outfit of the day type pics. I would like something that is awesome and can project the details of an outfit, nothing blurry or fuzzy, even if it is clear, sometimes you still see blurred edges when you look REALLY close..

So I have been recommended a canon 40D and a T2i. I do not intend on shooting video,

I have also been recommended this lense for fashion photography. -> tamron 28-75mm

I want to buy used, body only.

Can anyone help here? I'm not dead set on these two models, whatever would be a great price but deliver quality ($350 and under for the body)

The lense is about $330 used too.. ( this is all amazon pricing)

Again, I am open to suggestions,

I would like to take pics like this .. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7240/7336308006_421154bd8a_b.jpg If not better!

Another 6D v 5D3 body battle...

I'm sorry create another 6D vs 5D3 thread as I know there are many, if the mods feel the need to move this somewhere else, or outright delete it. I understand.

I have visited this site for years, but never signed up to the forums, but here I am, as I have a conundrum that I haven't been able to find a clear answer to despite my months of research through these forms and other places on the internet.

Yes, that blasted eternal 6D or 5D3 question. Pros and cons for each, etc, we all know the tale of the tape. Here's my issue. Through my research, it seems to me that the majority of the people that are very happy with their 6D purchase are the ones moving up from a much older tech/system. Wether it be a 5D2, or a 40D, 30D, etc, they are cameras that use outdated tech by todays standards.

I, on the other hand, have a 7D, a camera that isn't that old in tech comparison. I am looking to make the jump to FF while keeping the 7D to use in tandem, as obviously, its still a very good camera in its own right. I am now extremely used to it's fantastic 19pt AF system, it's speed, and overall robustness. However, as I am starting to do more editorial photos and portraiture, I find that the image quality just isn't there for those uses. I also shoot weddings/events, sports, and landscape as well. I basically cover the gamut.

In my limited in-store experiences with both the 6D and the 5D3, I have found the the AF system in the 6D to be frighteningly archaic compared to the 7D. But, I have found the overall complexity of the 5D3 (beyond it's 61pt AF system) to be almost overwhelming. I don't use all the systems and settings in my 7D, so there's a good chance i'll never use all of the camera that is the 5D3, I'm not that big into video either.

As I said, my main objective here is image quality, and I know from reading many reviews on here and elsewhere, that the discrepancy between the 2 bodies is almost nil (being excellent quality for both), as is the same with high ISO performance, and the low light focusing (although it seems like the 6D may have a slight edge here).

I can see myself using the WiFi system on the 6D for proofing photos with clients on a larger screen on the fly. But that, and the price, are the only 2 main advantages from my perspective the 6D has over the 5D3. There are many things that bug me about the 6D, all of which have been discussed before (AF system, SD cards, burst frame rate, no joystick, etc) but I'm wondering if i'll be able to ignore those things (AF system specifically) and use the 6D where it shines, for its quality of image, and keep that extra $1400 that I could certainly use elsewhere.

I would like to hear from people people who might be able to share my perspective (7D owners looking to make the hop), and maybe shed more light on it.

Thank you!

Canon 70d vs d7100 Buffer

Hey all, I just found a video on the 70d's buffer
With 95mb/sec it supposedly does 22 shots before slow down, which I think is pretty nice !
I am quite happy to see that they didn't limit the buffer ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuEtZb3ZNLA
( see 3 minute 58 to see the fast card)

A video on the Nikon
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9R83frC6-w

In 3 seconds you get approximately 50% more shots (21)70d vs (14ish) d7100

I do wonder why there seems to be such a big difference between these cameras, which supposed to compete with each other.
Normally canon gets accused for protecting the next camera in the line, Now it seems nikon is protecting the yet to be released d400?.

Hope either one presents the d400/7dII soon, the good buffer on the 70d makes me wonder if the 7dII could have 30-35+ raw buffer!

Canon vs Nikon at DxOMark

How can this be?

Link 1:
http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Cameras/Compare-Camera-Sensors/Compare-cameras-side-by-side/(appareil1)/895%7C0/(brand)/Canon/(appareil2)/680%7C0/(brand2)/Nikon

Link 2:
http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Lenses/Compare-Camera-Lenses/Compare-lenses/(lens1)/757/(lens2)/756/(brand1)/Sigma/(camera1)/680/(brand2)/Sigma/(camera2)/895

At link 1 DxO tels us that the sensor of the nikon is much better. But at link 2 i attached the same type of lens and then the canon is better.
Means this that sigma makes the lenses better for canon or that nikon is only good without lenses?

What would you replace the 7D with? If anything at all!

First off, I have absolutely adored my Canon 7D since the day I bought it; However, I was fortunate enough earlier this year to purchase a 5D Mark III and since then have been completely spoiled with all of it's features. Currently, my girlfriend and I are tackling weddings left and right, and if you've ever done a wedding before you probably know the lighting is only right about 50% of the time… Now again, I love my 7D, But if I were to sell it and replace it with a newer camera what would you pay as the next best option? After selling my 7D, if I even take this route, I would not like to spend over $1000...

So whaddya think? 70D, 6D, keep my awesome 7D and deal with the noise the best I can? As always, thank you for your replies! I really love this form and all the support you all bring to the table! Thanks!

5d MkIII reliability

I am waiting for my new MkIII to arrive and have been browsing the forum to pick up info. Is it my imagination or are a disproportionate number of MkIII's failing. I've read with horror the threads on water damage. This camera is supposedly water resistant. I've even read a post by someone who claimed to have washed his MkII under a gently running tap! I have had A1, T90, F1n, D30, 20D and 7D. All these cameras have travelled the world and spent a lot of time in the far east. Not one has shown any signs of internal water damage. Furthermore I must confess to being a sweaty person. I have had sweat trickling down my arm and dripping onto the camera held in my hand ( and into the viwfinder of a Bronica). I blacklisted Sony when they refused to accept that damage to a screen caused by a sweaty nose was their responsibility. I chuckled to myself and thought that this problem would never happen to me, I used Canon cameras! Will someone please tell me that this is all in my imagination and that I haven't made a terrible mistake.

60D/7D Users & AUTO ISO @ Events

I had a question for 60d/7D/5DMK2 users: In many situations, when shooting on M one doesn't have time to adjust shutter, aperture, ISO etc. for e.g. events with moving subjects and areas of varying exposure. I would prefer to shoot Aperture Priority with AUTO ISO (since noise levels are perfectly acceptable to me upto maybe ISO 3200). However, this is out of the question since the camera often selects shutter speeds which are ridiculously low and there is no minimum shutter speed setting like the new Canons or older Nikons. If I choose Shutter priority, the camera will select whatever aperture it wants, which I may or may not need. It seems like AUTO ISO is only helpful in M mode.

I was just wondering, for those of you who shoot in these types of situations, how do you shoot? What are your settings? Do you always shoot on Manual and adjust shutter, ISO, aperture? How does one use AUTO ISO without the min shutter speed functionality.

Thoughts appreciated. Thanks.
