Wide Angle Pancake?

Would a wide angle pancake lens make sense on a Rebel and, if so, might one be in the works somewhere? I'm so smitten with my new 40mm lens that I would maybe give up my "normal" zoom for a corresponding 20mm (or so) lens. Or is that dumb and my 17-50 zoom is the perfect complement to the 40? I just really like the tiny package for general photography and deal with the bigger lenses for sports where I don't care.

More body upgrade from 40d questions???

Another upgrade question from a relative rookie after having recently bought a used 40d after many P&S cameras.
I'm enjoying using the 40d and currently have the following lenses.
EF-S 15-85, EF 50 f/1.8, EF 70-200 f/4 L USM, EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM, Kenko 1.4 Teleconverter
I primarily shoot travel, landscapes, birds and NO portraits, sports or video. I use a Sony NEX F-3 for video and family pics. I would like to be able to make prints up to 16 x 20 occasionally.

1. Should I keep the 40d and just get another lens or 2? (10-20 and better telephotos_)?
2. Trade or sell the 40d and get a 7D, 60d, or 70d? The importance of having lens microfocus adjustment is not clear to me at this point especially with the wider depth of field on crop frame cameras.
3. Keep the 40d and get a good used 5D or new 6D and get a 24-105L or similar lens?
4. Get rid of the 40d and just get a full frame? I'm concerned here about my need for expensive lens length with birds, etc.

Thanks in advance

The long awaited replacement….

We’re told production for the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS will be “coming to an end soon”.
Canon’s lens production has had its share of issues in the last few years with the new super-telephotos and to some extent the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II. Strange Image Artifact on my new 5D III

I was walking at night, taking flash pics of the kids the night we arrived at Black Butte Ranch, OR, it was the very first outing with my new 5D Mark III body. I was also using a 430 EX II with a simple slide-on diffuser and a 24-105mm L lens.

Never mind the obvious focus issues of the photo, what the heck is going on in the lower right corner? Is this an artifact from a focused LED headlamp hitting the sensor in a weird way, or did I get a lemon body?

I shot about 800 frames, including 50 with night flash like this, over the course of a week, and this is the only frame that had any such issues. Any brilliant insight out there, should I be concerned?

Canon 14mm II for "Yangshuo, China"

My next business trip to HK & China is in mid Sep. We going to have a weekend off in China, my co-workers and I are planning visit “Yangshuo, China”. You can see Yangshuo landscape in their $20 bill.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yangshuo_County#Landmarks

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1345&bih=583&q=Yangshuo&oq=Yangshuo&gs_l=img.3..0l10.75248.75248.0.76672.1.1.0.0.0.0.143.143.0j1.1.0....0...1ac..23.img..0.1.143.0--rVoPFPVg

For the gear, I’m going heavy this time:
1. First body - 5D III + 16-35 II or 14mm II + 24-70 II backup
2. Second body - 5D III + 70-200 f2.8 IS II
I never hand on 14mm II before and I would like to rent it for couple weeks for this trip. Are there any cons compared to 16-35 II?

For those “been there & done that”:
1. Are there places in “Yangshuo” that you recommend for landscape photos?
2. Activities that you would recommend?
3. Since my co-workers and I don’t speak Chinese, do we really need a tour guy? We prefer our own paste, however, we still want to know the historical of Yangshuo.

Look forward to have your feedbacks.

Thanks
Dylan

Hawaii and my new Canon 100D

I recently bought the Canon 100D and thought I'd share my experience with it so far with my fellow CR friends.

I justified buying this camera as it could serve as both a holiday camera and a backup to my 5D's. However it's become my favourite go to camera for all my shooting bar professional gigs. It's light, it's compact and it's so cute. The controls are so easy, it has a dedicated iso button, I'm getting to love the touch screen and I don't feel precious about it - I just throw it in my bag and take it anywhere. Having recently sold my 7D, it's also given me back the crop factor and the variety in focal length to all my lenses. Chuck on the 40 pancake and you could pretend it was a pocket camera. It really is like a new born baby, that I just want to keep close and hold all the time :D

Here's some of what I got up to in Hawaii with the camera - time lapse together with some of the in camera miniature effect (also, a very small amount of GoPro video from the red mustang convertible we hired - that's exciting for an aussie).

Review/ comparison of web hosting services, site builders, etc?

Hey fellow picture-takers,

Longtime forum creeper, first time post.
I'm trying to get my photo business started and am looking to setup a website.
I've no prior experience with such, and am not sure which companies provide the best options for a budding photographer.

I do have an idea of what features I'd like incorporated in my website:
1.) Multiple Image Galleries/ Categorized Galleries
2.) Online Store/ Paypal option for print sales/ link to amazon store
3.) Complete customization
4.) Ability to be viewed from any desktop or mobile device (I've been told Adobe Flash and Apple products do not play nice)

To be honest, I don't know if I'm asking too much with that feature set, or if it's too simple. Any critique and input is appreciated.

Noise in 1DsMkIII

My shutter count is about 30-40,000 and noise seems to be increasing in my images...what used to be noise at ISO 800 is now present at ISO 400.
Just spoke to customer service and was told that it could be because I PP in LR4 and to try using DPP, have not done that yet.

Two questions: what in LR might be aggravating the noise and, if it isn't LR caused, what may cause the problem?

ST-E3 Overheating?

I know there have been some related threads on this in the past, but the answers seem inconclusive.

I was shooting a series of portraits on Saturday using the ST-E3 RT and 3-4 600 EX-RTs. Near the end of the first session, I started having problems with the strobes not firing. I'd shoot once, strobes would fire. Shoot again, nothing. It was all of them. So, I thought maybe the ST-E3 batteries were dying. Replaced them. Didn't make any difference.

Fortunately, we were near the end of that series, so went outside to shoot the subjects in some natural light. Came back after 20-30 minutes, turned on the ST-E3 and the 600 EXs and everything back to normal. For the rest of the day, I would shoot for 1/2 hr to 45 minutes inside, then go out and shoot natural light and come back in. No problems for the rest of the day.

Is it possible for the ST-E3 to overheat?

Since none of the 600s were firing, I doubt if they were the problem. I use battery packs with the 600s as well and all batteries were at full charge at the start of the day.

I used to have this problem all the time with the optical trigger (ST-E2, on-camera flash controller and the Yongnuo ST-E2 clone) I didn't think it would be a problem with the ST-E3 since it's a radio transmitter and not optical but, maybe it does because of pre-flashes? Anybody have a similar experience or an idea?

Is This the New Sigma 24-70 f2.0? 2014 Can't Come Fast Enough!

I stumbled across this photo posted by CanonWatch. What do you all think? Does it look legit? I don't know much about Sigma other than they're completely changing the lens game and I'll probably pounce on this lens like a fat kid on a cupcake! ;)

Autographer? Practical Applications?

I saw this on DPreview.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/omglife-autographer

While its ridiculously overpriced, I think it would be cool if I shot a wedding with this on to capture whats going on around me as I'm shooting. Not for client purposes but to see how I tend to shoot and maybe catch things I may have missed for next time.

What are some practical applications you could see for this?

Photographer logo?

Would anyone like to share their logo, how you use it, and/or what you think makes a good logo for a photographer (and why)?

Opinions on watermarking photos with logos?

I've discussed this with friends and it's a topic that not many seem to agree on so it would be interesting to get an opinion from all different shooters, skills levels, brands etc...

T2i upgrade to 6D?

Currently I own a T2i and shoot a variety of things including: RC cars, people, and a whole bunch of other stuff!

I shoot mostly with the 24-105 and 40mm pancake!

An example of what I shoot:

IMG_8404 by THGBrian, on Flickr

IMG_9492 by THGBrian, on Flickr

Just Some Drift Stuff by THGBrian, on Flickr

Things I'm looking to improve:
High ISO in low light situations (Everything above ISO 3200 is >:( on the T2i)
AF Tracking (I use center point AF, and I've heard the 6D center point can focus in REALLY dark light)
Build Quality/Ergonomics? (The T2i feels insanely tiny in my hands!)

I have been looking at the 6D as the ideal upgrade because:
Larger sensor=better low light
"Insane" Center AF Point
Better build
Wifi?
Silent Shutter mode

I have looked at the 70D and I really like the features, however it won't perform as well as the 6D in lowlight...

I can currently grab a brand new body with 1 year warranty off of Craigslist for $1500-1600, I just want a few other opinions from you guys!

Light Meter Help

I am new to the form and have read little on light meters. I have a Minolta 4F and am wanting to know what everyone else uses. I am in the market for a new one. My local shop sells Polaris and Sekonic. I do not know much about them. Is there anything that compares to the older Minolta 4F? I am not really wanting to spend more than $250 on a new light meter. I am into outdoor photography if that helps, nature and landscapes. Thanks for your help.

Anyone else here toying around with lens rebuilding.

So I have been rebuilding random lenses for my primary system Nikon.. I know I know where I am posting. Anyway I figured I would post up my first rebuild of a lens for the Canon mount system.

I picked up a broken Sigma 15-30mm f/3.5-4.5 Canon mount off eBay for next to nothing. I ended up replacing the aperture control ribbon cable and some other sub electrical system bits. First time I had ever repaired a lens for the Canon system.

So just curious if anyone on these forums are experimenting or rebuilding/repairing lenses as well.

You know, sometimes, when one is tired...

You know those moments, when you are tired, trying to do something anyway and at some point you realize you are not your sharpest...

did you manage something similar, or is it just me?
