Wedding Bloopers; Grab Your Popcorn!

So, I had quite the experience at a wedding today and thought I would share to see if anyone else has suffered from a wedding blooper on a greater or lesser scale.

My wife and I had just arrived at the church and were ready to go to work. The bride was ready to get going so I volunteered to take the dress shot on the FF w/ the 17-40L, (as I do for essentially every wedding). The bride, who is also a photographer, mentioned that she found a great place for the dress shot. It was in a mid-size bathroom, but the room had a beautiful window with some stain glass and an ornate mirror and did look like a fine place for the picture. I was having a hard time finding a place to hang the dress and opted to place the hook between the ceiling tiles and the trim...

CRASH!!! The ENTIRE ceiling came down!!! There was dust everywhere and needless to say it was rather hard to breathe in or around the room. I spoke with the pastor who was incredibly nice and forgiving and he said they are in the middle of remodeling that bathroom anyway. I'm sending him a check on Monday though, if nothing else to make me feel better. The wedding session ended up being a complete success despite how it began, (thank goodness).

So, am I alone or is there anyone else out there with a wedding blooper?

Lens Resolution fact or fiction?

Hi guys,

Lens resolution is something very often discussed, especially on DXO site.
However, I feel that it is fictional and here is why:

Look at p&s cameras, they often come with low quality zoom lens (compare to DSLR ones)
yet they offer a very high resolution out put images. If you zoom in those images, you can
definitely see details and they are not bad.

If you get the ratio of megapixel from a p&s and the area of light projected on the sensor by the lens and multiply that ratio multiple times until you meet the size of your DSLR sensor, I am sure you can get a much higher lens resolution from your DSLR (not sure if this make sense) than one from DXO.

So if that is the case, then the DXO resolution measurement is a total BS
What do you think?

Ever wondered what will a Zeiss 100MP do with a Canon 2xIII?

Out of boredom this afternoon I decided to clean a bit my lenses. At some point all were lying on a table and theZeiss 100 Makro-Planar was laying besides the Canon 2XIII extender so....thought of matching them. And match they do! Well, kinda because the extender will not let focusing beyong 10m but's that more than enough for macro or portraits (and up to 5m if you put the 1.4x II though I did not bother to take pics with it)

Below a copuple of comparisons of the same pic taken with the Zeiss alone and with the extender. Both pics are taken at minimun focus distance, this means the Zeiss "only" subjct is magnified 1:2 (as per the lens design, obviously) and the extender subject fills 1:1. This is important, the normal zeiss pic is shown zoomed 2:1 to match the extender pic

Pics taken on tripod, aperture priority, liveview mode, cable release. As I had a crappy light in my house I decided to shoot ISO 800 with a Canon 5D III. This proved to be an interesting choice when looking at the effect of noise. I'm no lens test expert so there may be flaws in this test, don't hesitate to pint them out.

(you may want to click to go to the flicker pic at 100% otherwise the differences are lost at this sizes)

The Original Field of view for each pic
The "A" in PANAM is about 2mm wide. The coin is a 20 cents of €

To the left the Zeiss only at 200%, to the right the Extender pic at 100%

Zeiss 100MP and 2x comparison f4 (cropped) par Fegarix, sur Flickr

My personal conclusion
a) IF your subject does not FILL your frame with teh Zeiss alone, by all means use the Canon Extender!!!! Even for the Zeiss 100MP which is THAT freaking good at any aperture and holds well zooming in however blowing up the Zeiss "only" will cause artifacts and dramatically increase the apparent noise so to me the extender pic gives you more margin to work under those conditions.

b) keeping the Zeiss alone pic at 1:1 and reducing the extender pic to 1:2: the Zeiss alone clearly wins, but your subject does not fill the frame....

c) I'm impressed, did not expect those results.

d) Really happy I got myself a Zeiss 200mm Makro-Planar f/4 :D :D :D

A couple of Notes
- When using the extender the camera reads the natural Zeiss aperture range, starting at f/2. In reality you are shooting two stops above it so a extender pic at f/2 = f/4. This is easily seen in the shutter speeds. This also means when shooting at f/22 you get ridiculous small aperture of f/44. Did not bother to try it, probably crappy IQ

-The selections you saw were matched to trying and get the (roughly) same DoF (remember the to calculate double the aperture number in the extender pic to have an idea of the real one)

-have a bunch of other apertures tests in case you're courious!

I really like my price polls, because at least with the 5d3 very few people estimated how sky-high the price tag would be on release. Now it's your chance to prepare your next "I told you so!" post:

Will Canon this time fight Nikon on the same level, will they try to undercut them like with 60d/d7000, or will they sidestep Nikon with the new live view af and try to make a healthy profit like 5d3/d800?

For anybody who hasn't seen them: Here's the thread about the [cr3] rumored specs: http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=15594.0

P.S: Please vote for what you think the price will really be, not what you'd wish it to be.

Similar sized, midlength prime to the 16-35

So I'm wondering if anyone can recommend which prime lens would be close in length and no greater diameter than the 16-35 II. I'm looking at the 85mm 1.8, 100 2.0, and 135 2L. From the specs it looks like the 135 is closest but I'm not sure I want that much reach when shooting in the water. Anyone with the 100mm how much shorter is it really?

I don't want to buy a lens only to find out that it is too far from the port and will have focus issues.

CPS Canada Shipping

Just sent my 1DX to Canon Canada for the service notice, via Purolator per CPS Bill of Lading. I already gave the feed back to Canon but would like some feedback. When you send via Prepaid CPS, you can't insure your equipment. If you could insure, you are limited to $5000 and shipping at your expense. Has your business insurance ever covered loss or damage if loss or damage occurred?

Home from Central Asia...Thoughts and lessons

Hi,

A while ago I posted and started a discussion about what to bring for this trip. Here's some follow-up.

I wound up using my Retrospective 7 (I love this bag!!!!! Perfect for this trip with the most comfortable shoulder strap made!). I decided to bring my 24-105, 17-40 and Shorty 40 with the 5diii. I have about 2200 RAW to process but can tell you that almost all were shot with the 24-105, less that 10% with the 17-40 and about 5 photos with the 40 (cause I wanted to use the 2.8 ). I probably could have done the whole thing with 1 lens. A friend who was with me (shoots Nikon D90) had his "walk-around" and his 300 as his only 2 lenses. There were a few times when I wanted some more reach but I will wait to see what happens when I crop these pics during PP before I decide on my next "travel kit." If the crops don't give me the IQ I m hoping for, then next trip might leave the 17-40 and the 40 at home and bring something longer.

Everything was shot in available light. The high ISO shots look pretty awesome on chimping. Again, will wait to see.

In terms of the kit, I never felt insecure or threatened carrying the camera and a red-ring lens with a hood. I had thought about camouflaging things with gaffer tape (lots on the forums about that) to hide to camera but that was entirely unnecessary. The only negative experience I had was stupidly leaving my charger in the hotel room (I put it there while way jet-lagged) and so losing it. I was able to get a $5 generic charger (had Chinese characters on it) that worked but I just ordered a new Canon charger because I don't know what this knock-off will do to my batteries over time.

Anyway, I would recommend this part of the world to any of you. Fascinating history, wonderful colors, amazing people and safe. I will get to my PP eventually, but here are a couple of my favorites, right off the
backup SD jpegs decreased to fit here.......

70-200 f/4 - 70-300 f/4-5.6

First post be nice ;)

I shoot mainly wildlife and nature shots, some birding.

I have the 70-200 L f/4 is and it's a great lens. I also have a 300 f/4 L is. Plus a 1.4mk ii extender. All on a 7d.

I have a journey to Atlanta (work) and Martinique this year, but being based in the UK means a long journey and I don't want to lug around too much heavy equipment as I will also be taking a 10-22 or the new 16-35. I don't have any longer reach apart for the mad sigma 50-500 but I'm not taking that, far to big and heavy.

So the question is. Do I buy the 70-300 L and take that or do i take the 70-200 and couple it with the extender.

I am also considering getting a kenko extender if I get the 70-300.

If I do buy the 70-300 I will sell the 70-200.

Thanks
Rich

JOOOUUUUSSSST!

I am taking some pics of jousting tomorrow (historical reconstruction at Linlithgow Palace) purely for fun.

I got the call from CPS yesterday that my 7D has been rebuilt and some boards replaced and is ready to go, but I won't be able to collect it before tomorrow.

So my choices are to use my 600D / T3i, use my M, or just enjoy the day.

It would be a strength of my convictions to use the M I suppose, but I would use the T3i in OVF mode... so it's going to be better. Probably Ai Servo, centre spot select..(I miss my 7D, the wee cross mode for surrounding points would have been brilliant here) but should I shoot JPEG for speed and burst depth or RAW for quality (I miss my 7D which could do RAW and with depth)

Lens choice... Do I take my 100mm f2.0 to give the t3i's AF as much help as possible, or do I take my 70-200 which is a stop slower and has a longer slew...

What would you do?

I might just go and enjoy the day.

How big is your "Ignore List"

CR Backup Admin posted this thread a few days back regarding the option of setting up an ignore list -

http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=15495.0

I'm just wondering as to how many of the CR universe have set up an ignore list? If yes, what is the number of posters you have ignored?

My list reads ZERO right now. Used to be a fair few, but I have removed them from the ignore list subsequently.

6D video settings

Hi folks,

Bought a 6D + 24-105L and have been playing around with shooting video.

I've never shot video on a DSLR before, so I'm not sure how to get the best possible performance from it.

I know the 6D is notorious for moire in video mode, so naturally I 'm looking to minimise it.

It's the actual settings (aperture, ISO, exposure time, picture style, etc.) that I'm not so sure about when it comes to video.

Would really appreciate some advice from experienced videographers.

Thanks!

5D Mark III---AF stops working in very low light

I have a question regarding my 5D Mark III.

When focusing in very low light conditions, the AF will suddenly cease functioning, as if the camera were MF only.

What brings back AF is pointing the camera to a light source. The AF springs right into action. Still, after coming back, if focus isn't achieved farily quickly, AF will "hang" again.

Is is expected or normal for AF to stop functioning in extremely low light?

If it makes any difference, what I describe happens with the 50mm f/1.2L lens. I have not yet checked this out with other lenses.

Canon T2i/550d write speed n Burst mode

Hi all,

I use a San disk Extreme SDHC card which writes at 45 mbps as my primary memory card. I have a 32 gb Sandisk class 4 ( dont know about write speed but i assume around 10 mbps ?) as my backup card. When i use the class 4 card , burst mode(RAW only) is virtually unusable. Its really slow and clicks and lags every 2 secs. and the time between shots is a lot. So planning to upgrade my backup memory card.

<question>
Whats the write speed of t2i (550d) in the continuous burst mode and whats the speed of memory card i should be buying ? Even with the 45mbps card , the camera takes time to buffer even when shooting continous Jpeg(only) after about 15-20 shots. Is this normal ? What memory card i should be buying so that the continous burst mode (RAW only or Jpeg only) performance is at its best ?

Since the bottleneck is in the camera's performance only , i'm trying to understand if a 30 mbps Sandisk Ultra card would suffice my needs or should i invest in another 45mbps extreme card.

P.S i dont care about videos :)

17-55mm... should I keep it or sell it???

First of all, my gear:

Body: 5d mkiii
All purpose zoom: 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
Tele-zoom: 70-200mm f/2.8L IS mkii
Primes: 8mm Rokinon fisheye & 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro which I am selling and will replace with a 135mm f/2L which will then eventually be replace by an 85mm f/1.2L prime
Speedlite: 430ex mkii and I am in the market for a 90 ex to use as a hotshoe master for off camera triggering.

Now the circumstances I find myself in. I was looking for a backup for my mkiii just incase it decides to flip out one day and I'm stuck without a camera for a week or two (though I know CPS is good about giving you a temporary replacement.

Well... what I did was buy a 17-55mm and a 50D. I previously had a 60D and my lone issue with the 60D was the lack of AFMA. I know AFMA is less of a concern at f/4 and above, but as discussed above, I'm looking at f/2 and eventually f/1.2. And yes, I will more often than not use those lenses on the mkiii, but you never know.

Part of the reason I wanted the 17-55 is to get a sense of the focal length. On the 50D, the focal length is roughly 27-88. If I have the focal length, then I know I won't care for the 24-70 f/2.8L USM mkii. Also, the extra stop would be nice... but again... if I'm going to an indoor event... I can't imagine taking the 50D over the mkiii.

So am I going to use the lens? I'm almost leaning towards no. I have it up on Amazon, so if it sells the decision is out of my hands... Dang EF-s...

Chicago Sun-Times vs Chicago Tribune Blackhawks front page coverage

So remember how the Chicago Sun Times fired all their staff photographers and handed out iPhones? Well...here's the front page for the Sun-Times and the Tribune (called DarkTimes for some reason...). See if you can spot the differences here. Mike Pasini hits it right on the head.

P.S. I think we need a more general "photo stuff discussions" sub-forum somewhere...I'll put that under site suggestions.
