24-70 f/2.8L II strange zoom noise + decentering issues

I've just received a replacement for my 24-70 f/2.8L II as after some shooting with the old one I felt it had some decentering issues (whole right edge was blurred).
The replacement seems generally sharper across the frame, though doing a brick wall test this weekend just gone I now believe this copy to have a slight blurry left edge, not as bad as last copy but still :-\ The right edge is pretty sharp. On this point can someone tell me if decentering issues can be fixed by Canon repair centers?
The other issue which is weird is a strange noise/sound when I zoom in and out. The old copy I had was fine..a bit more resistance than this new one but sounded normal. The new copy I've got makes a strange tiny 'crackling' sound. It doesn't sound mechanical at all and the zoom action is smooth all the way. Maybe something to do with rubber seal in the zoom ring or air/bubbles in lubrication maybe? Only way I can describe it is the sound kelloggs rice krispies make when they 'snap, crackle and pop' :) It seems to be quite random too. Sometimes it's worse than other times (temperature?). If I've not used it for a good few hours it hardly does it but then seems to happen more as I use it for that session. It is quite faint in sound I must add. If you were outside in noise you'd never notice but in a dead quiet room you can just hear it from behind the camera and if you put your ear to it it's clearly noticeable. I fear that if I used it for video the mic may pick it up easily causing some peaks in the audio.

Anyone else experience similar?

Looking to upgrade, could use some advice [Casual/Enthusiast]

Greetings,

First time poster here. I would like to give some background.

For the past four/five years or so I have been shooting with the EOS XS and standard kit lens which was sufficient for a novice on the scene in college.

Now that I'm all growed up with a big boy job I am afforded the unique opportunity to travel around the world for much of the year. I use this as an extension to continue my photography pursuit/hobby and pretty much pack the camera into my carry-on when I travel.

I'm still shooting with my XS although I purchased a 50mm f/1.8 two years ago which really helped, but now I'm seriously considering an upgrade.

I was looking at the 5DMIII but this seems like a high level professional camera and I'm probably no where near that level yet. I was also looking at the 6D, 7D and 5DMII.

CanonRumors also keeps my apetite whetted by talking about all the lovely rumored cameras coming out and I find myself stuck in limbo between waiting to see what comes out and wanting to finally get a relevant camera. Indecision is my downfall.

If you can, please discuss with me some options I have for cameras on the market or nearly on the market that I should consider upgrading to. My budget upper limit is probably in the $2000 range. I'm not looking to change the lens much as I pack it into my carry-on for space conservation.

My birthday is soon so if you can convince me, I might get myself a little treat!

1D-X with Continuous RAW Video Recording ?

Hi guys, I need your opinion

As a photographer I have chosen the 1D-X over the 5D3 for its photographic capabilities and image quality. Now I occasionally do some video works and even released a 52 mins documentary. I am happy as I have the kind of tool I was waiting for some years. It is now possible for me to make a photo shooting or movies with the same camera and with all the gear in a single backpack. Regarding mobility, this is simply great.

I find the overall video quality decent for most of my work… but I really miss the control power that gives RAW. When I heard about ML unlocking RAW video capabilities and saw the first samples, I felt a bit frustrated. I am confident I made the right choice for my photographic works, so I do regret nothing. I don’t think I will sell my 1D just for that, nor will I buy an extra camera as it will be less convenient and I will have to spend a bunch of bucks. I just know my 1D-X is able to shoot 4K RAW and this feature is being locked for some marketing reasons. What do you advice me to do (except buying a 5D3 and get ML on it) ? Which among those 4 options seems more realistic ?

1. Wait for the next generation of 1D bodies, hoping Canon will unlock RAW video. See you in three years or more…
2. Learn coding, learn from the 7D ML firmware and build a 1D ML program at my own risks.
3. Call my friends, call some pros and bring pressure on Canon. Make the phone line and email servers explode with requests (With the risk that ironically, they will eventually issue a firmware upgrade with 4K RAW in some years… for the 1D-C)
4. Make an online petition on change.org !! (I was half serious with that one...)

PS : please no replies such as "shut up and be happy" :) I am quite happy with my gear but just looking for ways of improving its performance. thank you.

Thanks for your take on this !!

I got my 600ex-rt: Recommendations for umbrella? Softbox?

Hi all,

Ok, I have my 600exrt, and now, I'm psyched from watching videos how to use off camera lighting all weekend..and want to get started.

I have a couple of lightstands I want to start using that I already own.

I'm thinking of starting with some umbrellas (hopefully shoot through combo with cover you can put on them to use reflect for shooting into)....

I'm looking to get these manfroto umbrella holders:

http://www.amazon.com/Manfrotto-026-Lite-Tite-Umbrella-Adapter/dp/B001ENW61I/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=3V9PVCC4ABLEP&coliid=I3K2ULS11RAUJG

And these cold shoe clamps:

http://www.amazon.com/Tiffen-300-405-Stroboframe-Accessory-Shoe/dp/B00009UTL9/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=3V9PVCC4ABLEP&coliid=IG501ZCL41QYE

What would be a good brand, and good sized umbrella to start with?

Also, I'm looking to get one of these to act as a snoot, and also as a nice deflector/diffuser:

http://www.amazon.com/Rogue-FlashBenders-ROGUERELG-Positionable-Reflector/dp/B003UOIMAS/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=3V9PVCC4ABLEP&coliid=I2V7R2AVUP7AET

http://www.amazon.com/Rogue-Photographic-Design-ROGUEDFPLG-Diffusion/dp/B006ISEJ9Q/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=3V9PVCC4ABLEP&coliid=I1WHAN6B02X3UP

That should set me up for awhile...I got the long 33' foot cable to use with my camera till I get a 2nd one or the control unit:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0097IPB8W/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm also thinking of some type of good beginner softbox.

Looking at this one from B&H:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/621364-REG/Impact_EBO_0601515_Quikbox_15_x_15.html

Would the 15 x 15 be good enough to start, or would the 24 x 24 be better? I only have the one 600EXRT for now (unless I score another refurb deal when they come up again ).

B&H also has the kits with their softbox...wondering if for a couple more $$ I should get those to go with the 'impact' quickboxes...?

Thanks in advance !!!

CF card error, pictures possibly corrupt.

Hi all,

I recently was at a family friends house and I got the chance to use their 5D Mark III, but as they didn't have any CF cards I used my own. I had one that had some pictures on it that I still wanted so I didn't format the card when I put it in the Mark III. All my pictures I had taken on my 7D work perfectly but the pictures taken on the 5D do not open on my laptop using Bridge CS6 and PS CS6. When I put the card in my 7D the pictures from the 5D show up on there with all the EXIF data intact.

Does anyone know of a way of viewing and using the photos taken on the 5D. I would really like to have them as its not often I get to use one.

Many Thanks

Dan

Pelican Storm Case Question

Discussions on this forum, and a recent leak in my ceiling (which has been fixed and fortunately did no damage to my camera gear) have led me to thinking about getting the Pelican Storm im 2720 case so I can store all of my gear in one place. (I looked at all of the various sizes and this one seems to have the right dimensions plus wheels.) But, in reading an old thread, an issue was raised by Neuro about the cases being air tight and the implications of too much humidity or dryness. I don't use my gear everyday (sadly) and can sometimes go weeks or even months without using some parts of it. If it helps to know, I live in the northern VA area and have a dehumidifier running in my basement pretty much full time in the spring/summer. Also, the case will be stored on the floor of the only interior closet I have, which is on the first (ground) floor and is well ventilated due to a laundry chute in it. What precautions/measures, if any, should I take? Should I make sure I open the case periodically if I'm not using my gear to let it air out? If so, how often? I want to protect my gear but I don't want to inadvertently damage it in the process. Neuro: thank you for providing all the information you have on the Storm cases -- it's been really helpful. I look forward to the responses from you and others on the forum.

PS: Perhaps I am over-thinking this, but I do ask the questions in all sincerity.

Search for 7D focusing screen

I have spent the last hour or so looking into focusing screens for the 7D as I was, until recently, under the impression that you could not change it.
Once I found out it was possible my mind immediately jumped to whether I could get a micro prism FS like the one I LOVE in the FTb, and sure enough, after a good search I finally found what I was looking for!

I had looked through split screens, matte screens, micro prisms and mixes of all the above but finally decided that all I wanted was a micro prism.

There were many good posts on forums and a few different options, I even had a look on eBay but decided against it.
In the end the best option seemed to be a screen from KatzEye which always got consistently gleaming reviews but seemed a little pricey at $105.00 + shipping from the US (I live in the UK), and an extra $55 if you wanted some treatment on it to make it brighter...
But then I found the wonderful focusingscreen.com (I know, how did I not find this first time...) which would appear to be based in Taiwan. It offers multiple types of screens for a multitude of cameras (even Nikon screens for Canon!) and has a brilliant page to explain all the types of screen as well as what they look like while focusing in real life! In addition to all of the above they also have installation guides, with photos, for so many cameras...
Really wish I had found this site first off, and maybe I should have but maybe someone else will find this useful!

Prices are a bit cheaper than KatzEye, and I get the impression they modify screens rather than produce their own but I could be completely wrong in this assumption.

Will post my thoughts when I get it!

DP Review: no news? (at this post time)

May 23: 4 news.
May 24: 3 news.
May 25: 2 news.
May 27: only 1.
Today: no news? (at this post time)

I've noticed in the past, when news languish on DP Review (maybe) it's because the Staff is working hard on something really exciting. Do you folks ever had the same sensation or is it just me suffering for an acute attack of CRSAS (Canon Rumors Speculation Addiction Syndrome)? :o

I'm wondering whether they're all too busy playing with some exciting new stuff... from Canon? :P

(But maybe a flood of insignificant news is just around the corner)

A little help on a sailing trip to the BVI’s w/5D III

No, I don’t need help carrying anything…

I’m taking;
5D Mark III
70-200 f2.8L II
24-70 f2.8L II
50 f1.4
2X Extender

I’m going on a friend’s large sailboat for a week of island hopping. I guess my main concern is the salt spray, rain, blowing sand etc. I bought a rain protector but I don’t want to be anal about it.

Is there anything that I need to watch out for?

Been a lurker here for a long time and appreciate all the helpful posts, especially those who share their settings and explain why, a BIG thank you!

Canon 6D -3EV Center Focus Point Testing

Hello, I'm new here to this forum.

Several times a year I will do a review of Canon cameras. I am an advanced amatuer, I mostly just share things that I have found with the cameras I test. In my last review I compared the Canon 6D vs. 5D Mark III.

At minute 12:13 in the video I compare the center focus point on the 6D to the 5D3, after reading the wikipedia page on the -EV rating I gave up on trying to do the test accurately (as I talk about in the video) so I just set them up under the same low light conditions to see which one would work better. The 6D beat the 5D3 in my tests.

I am always trying to make my reviews better, so I was wondering if someone could help give me with pointers on how to do this more accurately in the future. I am more of a video guy than a stills guy.

Thanks!
Dave

Microphones

Hi, my video knowledge is...ummm...very limited.

I'm going to make some videos. They will be of someone talking. They will be made indoors with no other distracting sounds that need to be blocked out.

I know sound quality is very subjective, but I want "good" sound quality. Doesn't have to be "super awesome". We're not talking Hollywood. I just want it good enough, so that it captures the spoken word sufficiently well that nobody gives it a second thought.

But I don't want to spend a lot of money.

Am I wasting my time looking at $30 microphones on eBay - eg an "SG-108"?

If so, what is the lowest cost microphone that you'd consider reasonable?

On some older topics, I've seen "Zoom" recorders being highly praised. Should I just go with a "H1" and place this near my subject? (I understand that I'd then have to synch the sound with the video, but that doesn't worry me. I've used Microsoft Movie Maker to do similar things in the past with music so I assume this would be similar?)

Anyway, if someone has some advice, I'd love to hear it before I start a microphone buying spree trying to find one that's right.

Real iso's?

Hi guys,
I have read before about intermediate iso's being interpolated from real iso's, but always thought that the last "real" iso was the one before the H setting.

I have no knowledge of the 5D2 in the quote below, is 3200 the last iso before the H or are there more before the H?

Where does one find out about the real iso's for a particular camera? Is it just a case of my 7D has 6400, so that is the last real iso, or is that also lifted from 3200?

I hope this isn't a hanging offence, but this is a quote of dilbert from the post that raised the question.

Topic was "Why is my 5D III so noisy?"

[/quote]

It doesn't matter whether it is ISO 3200 or ISO 6400. Once the ISO is past the point where IQ drops more than 1 stop per ISO stop, increasing the ISO and then overexposing does not result in a better picture because you lose more than you gain by moving the ISO higher.

On the 5D2 the last real ISO is 3200 and everything over that is software underexposing and pulling up.

Whether it is the same on others...

Hello all,

I have just uploaded an uncompressed 1080p video test of the Canon EOS 6D. It's actually the first video I've ever shot on any camera ever, so the quality of editing is definitely not the purpose here, but rather simply present examples of 6D video.

Zeiss 100 f/2 vs. Canon 85 f/1.2 II vs. Canon 135 f/2

I'm looking to complete my three-lens setup and I'm debating between either the Zeiss 100 f/2, Canon 85 f/1.2 II or the Canon 135 f/2. I currently use the Sigma 35 f/1.4 and Canon 200 f/2.8, therefore I'm looking for a general purpose lens for portraits, street photography and macro (via extension tubes if I choose one of the Canons).

Any suggestions?
