your scariest photography moment?

I accidently formated the memory card on my 5Dmk2 mid wedding on the weekend,... after the ceremony :o
luckily transcend recover x got all the files back but it was a pretty stressfull experience :-[
must have had the menu item still on format and somehow managed to bump the menu button, then ok then the wheel 1 notch to the right then ok again!
lucky i realised before i shot any more frames on the card so i just swapped cards out immediately and stashed the card in my bag to see if i could recover later.

what silly thing have you done?

Portrait session in Saigon, girls in traditional outfits (Ao Dai)

Last week I did my first portrait session ever. I went down to Saigon and my objective was to capture traditional images of girls in their traditional Ao Dai outfits. My friend was gracious enough to let his daughter model for me and she also brought her friend. I had scouted a few sites where I wanted to go as I wanted old buildings and surroundings. Time only allowed us to go to two of those sites.

I went at this as a learning experience, I read as much as possible on how to direct models, planning the scenes, trying to picture some perspectives I wanted etc. I felt prepared going in to it.

I have to say that after this I have learned alot and my respect for you professionals has grown even more. It was not a walk in the park to work through the session. I found myself being a bit apprehensive and sometimes not sure of what I wanted. A couple of scenes that we shot I caught perfectly only to find that I had forgotten to adjust the settings so the pictures were just blurry although the colours and light came out exactly the way I wanted. The girls though are used to posing for pictures and they were really fun to work with so it turned out to be a success anyway. I would say that in terms of the result meeting my expectations it was a 7 out of 10, my work as a photographer was a 4 out of 10 and the girls work were a 10 out of 10.

With this one day session behind me I really look forward to the next one. It was a fun and learning experience and I wouldn't want to have had it any other way.

tips for Barcelona?

Hi guys,

every now and then I see a thread like this with interesting photo-travel tips and so now I thought it would be a good idea to consult with you, because after some time I'm looking forward a short vacation trip with friends and my first visit of Barcelona. It will be in late April, 4days, two couples (not really a group of photo enthusiasts, so I'm not going to make it a main objective), I expect some nice architecture (I thought it would be a nice place to try TS-E, but I'm afraid I won't be able rent it anywhere around), I look forward the sea side (a walk on the promenade, beach, marina) and (hopefully) nice, warm weather for a change :)

... so, should you have some tips for us, I would like to read them and would appreciate

Thank you!

Hoya uv filters - product differentiation

After reading this test:
http://www.lenstip.com/113.4-article-UV_filters_test_Description_of_the_results_and_summary.html
I have decided to pick up some hoya UV filters for myself ( and a few friends using crap filters)
The "Hoya 72 mm Pro1 Digital MC UV-0" seems nice, but I can't really figure out the meaning/significance of the "UV-0" designation.
My question is essentially if these two auctions are the same as they seem to be the best deals I can find:

Lexar CF cards FAIL - Sandisk?

Is anyone else having massive failures with their Lexar CF cards. I've had a few cards have complete corruptions that lose all data and is not recoverable by any software, tekserve or even Lexars 8-12 week in house recovery. The card only shows 33MB in recovery. They have a great warranty program so everything is replaceable except for the lost work. I've been shooting small jpegs to second card slot, but still not satisfied with that solution.

Is anyone else having this error? Does it happen with Sandisk? Has anyone used the Raw Steel cards?

I think I'm going to switch completely this week. I've been slow to as I know sandisk have a worse warranty program. But if they don't fail then I won't need it.

Anyone else have the 33MB card failure? Could you recover anything? Does this happen with Sandisk?

EF70-200 f/2.8L IS ll refurbished @ Canon for $1699.20 & I'm screwed

Well I just bought one of these from Canon and now I will feel guilty (at least until I do some shooting with it). You see, the problem is I already have the most excellent f/4 IS version and so do not really need this monster. So I have convinced myself that this purchase was an investment, so I should be able to sell it for not too much loss if I should so choose. Fine. The problem is that I am afraid that I wont want to sell my f/4 due to size/weight etc. and will have two 70-200 zooms, which seems more than just a little silly. I am hoping that, after seeing the magic that comes from the 2.8, I will willingly part with my little girlyman zoom, but I think that in reality I am screwed...

Why does Canon watermark their manuals

with the word "Copy"?

It's a PDF. Electronic copy. By definition. They can't send me an 'original' PDF, those bits (or the representation of them) were sent over a dozen networks to get to me.

But right in the middle of the damn thing I have to stare at this watermark on every page. Is this because if I somehow managed to print it, in the same small form factor they do (bound and sized appropriately), that it would be obvious I was making a fake. Seriously? :o

Weddings - prime only advice

Having just purchased the 135 f2 and 100mm f2.8l macro (I also have a 50mm f1.8ii), I can certainly see the appeal of shooting primes exclusively. What lenses do you use for weddings? How do you carry/change it? Thanks, Debbie just did a boudoir shoot with a former professional model & wished I'd had an 85mm. Couldn't get a full body shot with the 135mm in the studio I rent....

Canon 5D Mark 2 or 5D Mark 3??

So i've been shooting non-stop music video/commercial work on my canon t3i for the last year/half. I really feel like i've come close to using this camera to its full capacity & I'm getting ready to add a full frame camera to my bag..

Now I understand, obviously the Canon Mark 3 is the better camera but my main question would be..
Is the Canon Mark 3 worth the extra $1500 at this point in time for me? Right now the Mark 2 is going for around $2200 on Amazon (body only) which looks like a steal to me.. Is spending $3500 + for the newer model worth it at this point?

What would you do?

Really...How "Bad" is the T3i For Video?

So as some of you know I do a lot of camera tests and photography training videos. One of my Models, Annie, which has made numerous appearances on this very forum, has a Canon T3i and has started making some of her own exercise training videos.

She came to me recently and asked what I thought about the quality of the video because it was shot on a lowly T3i and something interesting happens when I watch....I can't seem to notice anything super bad about the quality. In fact....I don't even notice anything bad! She keeps bringing these videos over and showing them to me asking me what I think and Im like....uh...

Is it just me or does anyone else notice the same thing?

HELP - Could you measure your focus distance scale window?

Hi everyone!

I do need your help on this one. I have a Canon 200 1.8 with a broken distance scale window and there is no way i can find a replacement for it. I've searched everywhere, no luck.
So I'm in the market for a compatible window. I kindly ask you, if possible, to measure your focus distance scale window and post it dimensions here on this post.
I hope that this might be useful for other people in similar situation.

My Canon EF 200 1.8 window measures 4cm wide x 1.5cm tall.

I have high hopes that a 300/400/500 window matches this size.

Thanks in advance everyone!

Where can I send my 24-70mm to be worked on? (somewhere besides Canon)

Hello. I have the older version of the 24-70mm and it's not as smooth as it once was. I live in Los Angeles and needed a sensor cleaning as well so I drove to Irvine to see what could be done. The people at Canon told me that anything having to do with opening the lens is a repair even though in this case it's a light cleaning. I told them fine but ended up not letting them do it when I realized just how high their prices have gone up. They were going to charge me $382. I decided against it because I am planning on getting the newer version later this year and I don't think I could get my money back on that investment when I sell this one.

Does anybody know of a place I can take or send this lens in California or the U.S. to get cleaned for less than $382? Thanks in advance kind people.

crap portraits of me

I have a 5d3 and I do my best to take good shots of my family when we're out and about on holiday, but when it comes to photos of me no matter what instruction I give, everyone takes crap shots that are either blurred (Because they didn't hold the camera steady enough) or completely OOF because the camera picked an AF point which wasn't my face and they couldn't correct it.

I want to get some nice shots of me when on holiday (that aren't @ f11), what can I do to make it easier for people to use my 5d3?

Need to test my lens for sharpness

Hi
Ive been thinking lately my 70-200 2.8 Mk2 canon lens(on 5dmk2) isnt as sharp as it was, so i was out today and purposly did some test shots (nothing scientific).
Situation: tripod, remote release, mirror lockup, i used a range of F stops, on iso 100, and no IS with manual focus. My eyes are nearly 20/20 (actually i havent checked the diopter yet)

I manually focused using live view x10 so the center was looking perfect (subject was some static log pile

One thing i will add and i dont know if it means anything, when i view live view at x10, it looks nice and sharp and i take a picture, then zoom in on that image on the camera to the max which then looks the same as live view at x10, and it doesnt look quite as sharp as the live view. There probably isnt much in it but im sure i can detect it.

Looked at the results tonight at 100% and i dont think its as sharp as it should be, or infact, as it was on day one. I might be wrong.

I am a pixel peeper for a very good reason. Stock sites are pixel peepers so i need to be.
Hopefully is me doing something wrong.

What is the best way to test it at home?

Thanks for any help

24-105 f/4L corner performance at 105mm

Hello,

Long time reader / first time poster. I recently purchased the 24-105mm lens as an upgrade of my 28-135 lens. From the reviews I have read, it appears the 24-105's performance at 105mm is not as strong as other focal lengths. When I shoot at relatively close distances at 105mm with my 24-105mm lens using the center focus point, the center performance of the lens appears fine but the corners appear out of focus rather than merely soft. I've looked at images from distances between 10-30 feet and noticed the same results. The corner performance at 105mm with subjects at or near infinity focus is fine (about the same as my 28-135mm but not as good as my 70-300L, which is about what I expected). Perhaps the increased depth of field at infinity focus explains this. Stopping down to F/8 also helps, but does not completely alleviate the issue. Applying an AF microadjustment of +10 on my 5D III improves corner performance; however, the center performance then deteriorates - the same also happens when I focus on the corner of the frame either through live view or the viewfinder. As all the corners are out of focus to approximately the same degree, this does not seem to be a centering issue. Has anyone else experienced this with your 24-105mm lens? Is this typical behavior for the 24-105mm lens? Thank you in advance for your comments.
