Physical Ailments From Heavy Gear

Anybody else out there suffer any physical ailments from your gear and what did you do about it? I'm a long time street photographer and I typically shoot for 4 or 5 hours or more at a time. My current equipment (T2i/tamron 18-270) isn't overly heavy by itself but I'm a slight individual and the length of time I walk around on hard concrete takes it's toll. Add to that is the fact that the camera tends to stay on one half of the body the whole time because it's easier and faster to shoot like that. I have a long microfibre strap that let's the camera rest on my buttock cheek (sorry). The constant banging on my body doesn't bother me there. Any higher and the camera would bang against one's hip bone which gets very painful after about 1/2 an hour. About a year ago I started waking up in the morning with very painful soles. It would eventually go away but it scared me that it would become permanent. A visit to the local podiatrist resulted in shoe inserts ($600) and all of a sudden I felt very old. I decided I didn't want to live with the inserts especially since it really limited what kind of shoes I could wear. So I adjusted my shooting regimen. I don't go out for as long as I used to and I take regular sit down breaks. My shooting is alot more targeted to smaller areas with a higher chance of getting decent shots rather than walking endlessly through low percentage neighbourhoods with sparse opportunities.
The reason I didn't upgrade to a full frame earlier was the weight but the 6D solved that problem. The 6D with a 24-105 lens is almost equal to the weight I'm carrying now. Something to consider for all you young'uns out there that plan on shooting your whole life. Maybe check in with a podiatrist every couple of years and keep an eye on your neck and hips.

Nikon D4x rumors,

( I initially posted in the wrong section, sorry for that)

Hey all, I read this on the other rumors site, and it got me intrigued to what canon might have on their test shelves!

The rumors for the d4x are :

Same body as the Nikon D4
36 MP sensor without AA filter, designed and made by Nikon, with some new improvements (moire in-camera reduction)
6 fps (11 fps is the maximum possible fps with the current shutter)
Few video improvements
Price should be few hundred dollars above the D4 (currently listed for $5996.95).
Announcement expected in fall of 2013

(scource: the other rumor site)

Could canon have something similarly planned for the 1dx-s?, or maybe a high mp body based on the 5dIII (Like a 5ds )

6 fps for that many pixels sounds really interesting, if they could include a crop mode ( like the d800) and boost the fps 50% like the d800 with grip in dx mode, it would give you 36mp 6fps and 14mp(1.6 crop) with 8-9 fps...

I hope canon is planning something like that, i would love a '2 in 1' camera with high fps ( and still hoping for better buffer sizes on the cameras, like 60 raw....)

Cost of Canon 5D mk III

For a lot of us, the canon 5D mk iii is too expensive. If you compare features between canon $3300 paid in average for this camera is way too expensive, if you compare between canon and nikon it does make sense at all either. Honestly the real price currently for this camera should be $2500 top. Why is so high? Canon are you listening? I want this camera but I am stuck in buying the 6d!

African Safari Lens Help

I have lurked on CanonRumors for a couple of years and learned a lot from reading some of the forum posts. I am hoping some of those that have been on an African safari can provide insight on what lenses to take. I am taking my son for his high school graduation in August and will spend one week in Zambia (Vic Falls and South Luangwa) and then a week in the Masai Mara for the migration. I have a 7D and my new 5DIII is on its way from B&H today. So obviously taking both cameras along with the G15. I am trying to figure out what lens combination to use. Lenses include 100-400, 70-200 2.8 ver 1, 24-105, 17-55, and the new Sigma 35 1.4. I can borrow a friend's 300mm 2.8 ver 1 with extender and am contemplating buying the 70-300L for travel as it is smaller then the 70-200. I can't really afford for a 500mm lens at this point and I don't see a new 100-400 on the horizion.

Given the weight limits on some of the African flights what would you recommend as combinations for the 7D and 5DIII?

I am thinking - 7D with 17-55 and new 70-300L. 5DIII with 24-105, 300 2.8 and 100-400. I would also probably take the Sigma for low light. Any thoughts? Too many lenses? Thanks in advance.

5D MKII or 6d/mkiii for portrait/people photography. Anybody here use both?

Hello all,

I am looking to upgrade my old 5d to a new MKII or 6d.

I was set on getting the 6d but then I began to browse through hundreds of photos on flickr and the like to get an idea of the general 'look' of the respective camera's output.

I noticed that although the 6d looks more natural on landscapes and it far outperforms on low-light, the images of people seem a bit soft and gray in comparison to MKII images.

mind you I chose my 5d first series because I thought that portaits looked a little more authoritative, for lack of a better word.

today I checked-out a 6d and a MKII in a shop and got a feel for the cameras but it really is impossible to know how they are going to behave unless you are shooting a model etc.

so my question is aimed to those who have used MKII's extensively and have used 6d's as well in real-world portrait photography.

I have complete faith in the 6d's capacities in landscape, low-light etc. but my primary interests have more to do with how skin tones come-out as well as how much weight the profile of the person has in relation to the background etc.

anyone see an artistic advantage with the 5dII's IQ?

5d2 shadow noise and how I eliminate it...

I have discovered over the years that the best way to get super clean shadows with the 5d2 is to overexpose the image. I have not really tried it much with portraiture but in industrial, landscapes and architecture and interiors it works very well. I am quite surprised how much detail there are still left in what appears to be 'overexposed' highlights and because the shadows are 'overexposed' they are clean when I 'pull' them in post processing. More images and some thoughts why I think my 5d2 is still good enough for most applications here at..http://www.ivanmuller.co.za/blog-item/expose-right

Using pencil eraser to clean Camera / Lens contacts?

Hi,

Stumbled across this in one of the Canon DLC articles earlier today - thought I'd share -

"Warning: do not clean lens contacts on either a Canon lens or the camera body with an eraser! It’s incredibly easy to rub off the gold plating on these contacts, and end up with data communication problems, even if that wasn’t the original source of the problem! It’s obviously a good idea to clean the contacts if a lens communication error is reported, but our strong recommendation is to use a soft, clean cloth, perhaps moistened with isopropyl alcohol if you feel the contacts are smudged with fingerprint oil or similar debris and really need a cleaning agent. Again, do not use anything abrasive, and to repeat: do not use an eraser!"

Apologies if this has been covered before ... I've seen this for the first time!

Cheers ... J.R.

First big job using FF - for all the FF nay-sayers

So this is kind of in response to the nay-sayers of that canon interview where the dude is basically saying the future of canon is FF and everyones going off their tits about the future of 7Dii (or 70D if you're that way inclined)

I shot my first wedding with the paring of a 5Diii and a 5Dii (stepping up from last seasons 7D & 60D paring) and I coud not have had a more pleasurable time doing it. It was crazy just how nice it all worked out. I was originally a little bit anxious about it as the only other job for someone else I'd done with the 5Diii was a studio model shoot so I was out in the field without anything to fall back on.

I don't know if I'm slightly trolling here but just from what I've found this weekend, FF is the way forward... if you do own a 7D and you don't need the FPS then sell it and get a second hand 5Dii. The IQ and ability to frame is an amazing step up. I think I shot 90% of it with the 50mm 1.4 and just used the 24-105 for the group shots.

The colours, the image quality, the depth, the sharpness... I could go on

I wont put the pics on here as I've still to show the bride, but I have processed a couple of shots for testers and have them on my blog wentdownfighting.tumblr.com

I'm not the greatest photog in the world nor was this the most glamourous of weddings but I'm very pleased with the initial results ;D

I may even flippantly throw in my doubt that photog > equipment even applies any more...

on the verge of buying, just need some final moral support

hi, ive been waiting to get a FF for a while now, and im pretty sure im going with the 6d.

obviously 5d3 would be great but its just a little too expensive for me, and i think i can get a pretty good deal now on the 6d.

first up ive always had canon so im not interested in nikon (though if sony had a FF i would be v interested in that , shame)

forgetting the cost for a moment, im pretty sure that the 6d is the wiser buy as its a newer camera, id prefer to get a brand new model with warranty etc,

regarding features, im an intuitive shooter, so technicalities arnt really a huge concern, i usually only use single point focus. now i gather that overall with a good lens image quality is gonna match anything in the same sort of camera range, ill take it travelling. and one day ill get an underwater housing.

im never gonna be a proffesionl studio photographer , but i will use it in a semi professional fine art environment for a wide range of things . im a keen travel photographer too

can anyone talk me out of the purchase or pat me on the back and tell me im dong the right thing!

its a bit of an investment, so means alot.

thanks

Finally moving to full frame, maybe. Help/advice/criticism needed

Well, this maybe the year that I make a large jump to a Full Frame camera. The main reason why I'm upgrading is because my T1i is probably going to die soon. It's shutter count (according to Magic Lantern) is 60k and from what I can remember, the shutter life of a rebel series DSLR is around 50k.

SO! I've decided to start saving for a new camera but problem is, I don't know what I should save for. Coming to CR is always my first choice for any questions concerning Canon/Photography.

My budget is $1500 and I need help with which outfit I should get. I'll give you guys as much info that you guys need to help me make a decision or give me some options.

-I don't ever plan on ever turning pro
-Video Mode is not important to me at all since I have inherited a Canon XA10 from a friend
-I don't have good FF glass at all.
*The only lenses that are compatible with full frame bodies are my Tamron 17-35mm, Tamron 28-200, Canon 50mm and a Canon 70-210 f/4 (All from film camera collections)
-I'm mainly looking for good low-light, high iso performance.
-Weight doesn't matter, neither does weather selling.
-I shoot 50% Landscapes, 45% Candid/Group shots, 5% inanimate objects/slow moving stuff.
-I'll be going on vacation during the summer and winter so I don't know if primes should be a option
-I don't plan on purchasing more after this purchase until I finish college and get into a good career. Which is about 6 years from now -.-

So this is what I'm considering.
1. A Canon 5Dc with a Canon 24-105 OR Canon 35mm+Canon 100mm f/2
2. A Used 5DmkII body
3. A Used 6D

I know, I'm probably the worst at asking these questions because I constantly ask. I'm just trying to make sure I don't get a really bad case of buyers remorse (then again, photography always has buyers remorse added. Along side computers haha).

How much would you pay for Canon 24-70 f/2.8 L IS

I know at this point it is hypothetical but if Canon were to release 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS lens in 2013 or 2014 (which I think they won't), how much would you be willing to pay for it? and what would you give up / sell (if any)?

I think I would be willing to stretch myself to painfully cough up max US$ 3500 ... I'd sell my Tamron 24-70 VC & Sigma 150-500 OS lenses to partially fund the 24-70 f/2.8 L IS.

How about you?

Which Zoom lens?

I have the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM and I have been thinking about selling and getting the EF 70-200 f4 non is. I am not sure if it is worth the effort and extra money. Or losing the IS.
I have a sigma 135-400mm but the auto focus doesn't work but that isn't a big problem. So I am not too much worried but losing them zoom.
I am using t2i right now but I am hoping to go full frame by the end of the year. I am not sure which way I will go yet.

Good telephoto option for birds.

Recently I have been interested in taking shots of birds but when you stop at 200mm on ff. your limited. Any suggestions?

I grabbed a 100-400 from a friend. I don't think its that great of a lens. Just seems like my 70-200 2.8 iiis way sharper. Anyway considering 1.4 ext, 2.0 ext, 70-300l or open to other suggestions. Beyond this use I don't see much use for that range with the exception of my kids in the summer running around. One other thought was a crop body with my kit even though the iq will not be as nice. Here is an example of what I'm going after with lots of cropping. The last one was with the 100-400l at 400mm

Portrait suggestions needed

I've been interested in photography for roughly three years. I've primarily been taking landscapes and kids sports shots to this point, but this winter have been experimented with portraits and indoor, natural lighting shots.

Attached is a portrait I took of my son in this Boy Scout uniform yesterday. I'm not real happy with the result. One mistake I made was having him stand too close to the backdrop, so that I couldn't blur it. I find it somewhat distracting. His left side is also shaded somewhat.

This was taken during the day, there is a large picture window to his right and I used a Speedlight (430EXII) bounced off the ceiling in addition to incandescent lighting in the room. This picture was taken with a 6D camera with 70-200mm f/2.8 II IS L lens at 125mm, 1/50 sec. f 2.8, 400 ISO. No post processing other then some cropping of the edges.

Any suggestions for improving set-up, lighting, technique, etc. would be appreciated.
