I just used my 600 EX-RT couple of times, when i was playing with it today at home, i heard a noise every time i turned it on ... after checking it a lot, I figured that this noise is occurred while flash head is ZOOMING IN or OUT....
Is this noise normal with any other speed light, or there is something wrong in mine,

A Wedding Photographer's Look at the Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD

For those still considering this lens, here's my take on my first wedding done with the lens:

http://www.dustinabbott.net/2012/12/a-wedding-photographers-look-at-the-tamron-sp-24-70mm-f2-8-di-vc-usd/

I have given quite a few examples and reviewed it more from the perspective of professional use in that type of setting.

Here's one of the photos from last weekend:

Purchase advice for second Speedlite

Hello everybody.

I'm in the market for a second speedlite (for more creative flash lighting), and I have a somewhat tough choice to make.

I have a 430EX II and an ST-E2. I am looking at getting a 600EX-RT as my new flash instead of another 430EX II.

1. I read around the net and did not find any reference to IR triggering with the 600EX. Can it only be triggered by a radio transmitter when it's off the shoe or can it also be fired by a ST-E2 (solo or together with a 430)?

2. Aside from the higher guide number of the 600, is there any other advantage for it over the 430?

I am also thinking that maybe just a second 430EX II will be a more practical choice. Getting the 600 on the other hand may be a good choice if I want to move on to RT.

Looking forward for your great opinion.

Thanks.

My brand new 5D Mark III - what am I doing wrong, please help!

Hey everyone, I need some help about settings of my new 5D Mark III

I received it 3 days ago and the very next day I went to a basketball game of a friend of mine to test it. I am coming from 550D which I know is much less complicated to set up but still the results from my new camera were discouraging. I also got "Canon 5D Mark III Experience" by Doug Klostermann, it seems amazing but in 1 day I had the time only to skim through the most important parts from it.

My lens is 135 f2 L and every shot with it and my 550D was very crisp and bright and sharp.
On the 5D Mark III I tried everything I could but the results were dim and dark
T87_A0061.jpg

I was shooting on Manual, @ f2, 1/320 to 1/500 sec, Auto ISO. The ISO indicator was changing from 200 to 800 I think. The results were all dark like that... I tried with fixed ISO 1000. Then at the one end of the court the pictures were bright enough but at close they were still dark (and I don't think I can change ISO every time the attack changes the sides, at least I never had to do it with my 550D).
The lighting in the hall was not very strong but it was far from what is portrayed in these photos. I tried different settings of WB and found out Auto was the best. I also tried different metering - it did not improve anything. Also is it normal that the image gets so dark in the corners???

I know it's me, but what am I doing wrong, please help!

P.S. I am not shooting in RAW, at least not when I am shooting just for pleasure, but these JPEGs should be much better, no?

Canon 6D Raw Sample Images With Comparison To 5D2 And 5D3

http://www.metrodcphotography.com/review/canon-6d-raw-sample-images/

You can download the raw files at the link. It's three scenes, I setup my tripod with the 70-200mm on it and just switched the bodies so it was the same scene with the three cameras. From ISO 800 up to the highest for each camera going in 1 stop increments. Don't have the jpegs up yet.

Canon EF 35 f/2 IS Resolution Test

From LensRentals.com

Roger and Aaron at LensRentals.com have tested the resolution on a small batch of the new Canon EF 35 f/2 IS lens.

The lens performed better than the EF 35 f/2 that it was replacing, especially noticeable in the corners. While center resolution remains about the same. They compared the lens against the original EF 35 f/2, the EF 35 f/1.4L, and Sigma 35 f/1.4.

Battle of 35mm Lenses – Higher Numbers are Better

The real winner here appears to be the Sigma 35 f/1.4. Canon is going to have to make their sharpest wide angle prime ever to outdo the Sigma. It just happens that Norman Camera has the Sigma 35 f/1.4 in stock for $899.

LensRentals.com’s conclusion

I’m afraid this is a rather dull and boring post that doesn’t tell you anything you probably hadn’t already assumed. If you like to shoot 35mm and need Image Stabilization for the type of shooting you do, this will be a very nice lens and worth the money. Otherwise, you’re probably better off with something else.

Canon 100mm f2 usm vs 70-200mm f4l (non-is) vs 135mm f2L

Yes I understand these lens are, in a number of ways, very different but just wandering what people's opinion of each is.

My reasons -

100mm f2 USM - great aperture + sharp, relatively inexpensive (could therefore afford a flashgun also) + is small + nice focal length - but not L/is fixed focal length which might not be long enough on full frame.

70-200mm f4l - not great aperture but usable - great zoom range which is useful as I shoot landscapes + good build. - but is quite large comparatively speaking, and is not subtle.

135mm f2l - amazing sharpness + aperture -is subtle for focal length - but v expensive & fixed focal length.

I mainly shoot landscapes and I need a tele to get some nice compressed shots. Hoping to do some more portrait.

How far we have come

I was cleaning up stuff at work and sending off old gear to disposal..... including about a half dozen polaroid oscilliscope cameras..... one still had unused film in it so I had to give it a try, but the film was so far out of date I got nothing.... yet another casualty of digital, but it got me thinking

It is amazing how far we have come in digital photography. My first camera was ISO100 only, 320 by 200 pixels and 8 bit color.... and I got nice pictures with it! Now thats the size of the thumbnail images. I remember when the 1Mpixel camera came out. by the time we hit 5 megapixels people were saying that there was no need to go any bigger. My first DSLR was 8Mpixels, and has ISO range from 100 to 1600, but 800 was very grainy and 1600 was a joke...

Now we have 40+Mbit images, ISO over 100,000, image stabilization, and our cameras have several orders of magnitude more computing power than what took Neil Armstrong to the moon..... WOW!

A New Canon Ultrawide Zoom

This lens comes up every now and then as something that will be added to the Canon lineup. A couple of patents that have referenced this optical formula are out there, which tells us it’s something that is on the minds of the R&D team at Canon.

I was told today that the lens is in the pipeline and will be coming in 2013 if there are no more delays with lens production. I was told to expect availability to be in late 2013, but the announcement date was unknown at this time. It makes perfect sense that this sort of lens would be announced with the imminent large megapixel camera that Canon will unveil in 2013.

There were a few lenses that were to be announced in 2012 that will be pushed into 2013. A lot had to do with production delays with the new supertelephotos as well as the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II.

Lens Advice Please

My wife is letting me buy a new camera, and she's actually encouraging me to get a 5D3. Anyway, I'd be getting it with the 24-105 kit lens, but I want to get an additional lens to go with it. At some point in the future I want to get a 70-200mm, but considering I need to get a complete setup (moving from a Four Thirds Olympus E-410), I don't really want to get that straight away.

I'm considering either the 50mm f/1.4 or the 85mm f/1.8. I mainly shoot portraits of family members, and mainly outdoors shots of my toddler and other kids, but I want to start with indoors stuff, hence the fast primes.

Any suggestions which would be a better choice?

Moving to 6D from 5DII

Now that the 6D is out there, is there anyone moving from a 5DII to a 6D? As in - getting rid of the 5DII for the 6D. Not including people already moved up to a 5DIII or greater. Just looking for the those that consider the move from 5DII to 6D. If so why?

I'm just curious. I actually just moved to one of these cameras from a 550. I bought the FF new.

Ditch 100L for 70-200 L II ?

I find I use my 100L as short tele most of the time (once I got thru all the initial bug pictures) and I'm pretty happy with the results I'm getting. I like having the IS and 2.8 is for the most part fast enough for me.

I'm considering going to a 70-200 II instead and want to ask folks who've used both what their feelings are with respect to what each has to offer at 100mm.

I'd love to get a 200 f2 in addition to the 100 but I can't really justify tying up that kinda $$$. So the idea is do a 70-200 for portrait to moderate tele, and a couple of primes for normal and short.

Another thought is to go for a 135L instead. Less flexibility but more reach than 100 and faster.

Thoughts?

Please help me decide between the EF 300 f/4 L and the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 L

I'm looking for a new lens that will give me a bit more reach than my EF 70-200mm f/4 L for photographing wildlife (i.e. ducks, squirrels, etc.). I've excluded the 100-400mm L as I don't like the push pull and the 400 mm f5.6 due to it's lack of IS. I can't afford any of the faster L telephotos or those with longer reach.

EF 300mm f/4L advantages
* faster lens 4.0 vs 5.6 at 300mm
* compatible w/ Canon extenders
* slightly better sharpness at 300 mm?

EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L advantages
* $80 cheaper $1269 vs $1349
* more versatile (range of focal lengths)
* more compact (travel friendly)

Did I miss anything. I appreciate any and all opinions/comments. Thanks!

1D X AF in Low Light action

The 1D X finally met its match Tuesday night. I filled in for a reporter for the News Journal at a game in Mansfield, in a terribly lit gym. I used a 135L with a 1D X at 1/500s, f/2, and ISO 3200 to 6400 depending on location on the court. The majority of my shots were slightly OOF, and I attribute this to the AF system not being able to lock focus in the dim lighting. Looking at my photos, it didn't apparently lock on anything in the frame. In a few burst shots, the first one was in focus (while athlete still on the floor) but the camera lost focus as the player went up for the layup, even with face-recognition on. Needless to say, as I'm going through my RAW files right now, I'm highly disappointed. I will admit though, that the 135L is not as good at locking on focus as the 70-200 f/2.8L II IS zoom lens, but I couldn't afford the loss of a whole stop of light in this gym. I know I've been spoiled with a lot of light lately, but I just wanted to point out that as good as the 1D X is, and it is, it is certainly far from perfect. My suggestion is that in these cases maybe don't use high burst rates, but wait for a moment and try to lock on, then move the camera with the player, sort of like panning, and then fire a shot, maybe even just one shot. Bursting did NOT work at all here. Ok, I'm done venting.
