Best landscape lenses

I asked this elsewhere, but I figured I'd ask it here, too:

I'm thinking of getting into landscape photography, which was an interest of mine I never really pursued.

I started with 135 (Velvia) and then went to 6x7 and eventually 4x5. And while I found 4x5 had everything I needed (amazing IQ, color, lens movements) it was too expensive and slow. I'm not a patient person I guess.

I'm thinking of selling off either my entire 4x5 kit or most of it and investing the money in T/S lenses for my 5D Mark III. I strongly, strongly prefer the IQ and color on 4x5 Velvia, but it is too much work to shoot and too expensive. I'm just too lazy.

My favorite focal lengths were 135mm, 180mm, and 300mm. What lenses should I get to mimic these? The 24mm TSE II seems like the best performer, but the 45mm and 90mm seem like they would give me the FOV I like. But the corner performance... yuck.

Then I'd get an ND 1.5 so I could do the long shutter speeds I like. Does that make sense?

Has anyone successfully been able to get velvia style color and tonality out of a Canon sensor? I'd overexpose a bit, meter so that the scenes I shot only had 4-5 stops of DR (very low contrast scenes), etc. But is there some way to match color (LUT)?

Thanks!

Please explain expanded ISO

Just got the 6D and love it however, I have never really understood expanded ISO. The fact that the word expanded is used to describe the feature implies to me that its not real. So, my question is, if I switch from ISO 100 to 50, what is happening in the camera? There isn't less noise in the image is there? Is it just 100 with half the light allowed?
I would also like to understand what is happening at the other end of the scale. Not that I would ever, but what is going on at ISO 102,800?

Wrong colors with my 5D MKIII?

I recently purchased the EOS 5D Mark III and although I'm happy with it in general I think the colors it produces are not what I see in real life. I haven't been able to afford a quality L lens so the only lens I'm shooting with right now is the 50mm 1.8 II. Could it be the culprit?

Here's an original photo (cropped), as you can see the color of the meat is very pinkish as if it's almost raw (in fact, it was almost cooked).

Here is the same photo color corrected to match real life colors as closely as possible (the color should have more orange tones to it).

New to off camera flash, any tips/guides for beginners?

Well I finally invested in some stuff for off camera photography. I know that flash photography is a different from of photography that requires more practice. I just wanted to know if there's a site or a book that I can study to get better with my off camera flash. I currently have a "DSLRkit" Radio Trigger that I bought from ebay. It's like a combination of a Yungnuo and a Neweer radio control flash. I like it. I only have one flash so far and it's the Canon 430exII. I don't have an RC control in-camera because my camera was the last one to not have one implemented (Canon T1i)

So what's my next step? Should I practice using just one flash or should I purchase another flash like a Yongnuo YN560? Help me out fellow strobist :D

Book/Reference guide for 5D mark III

I have recently purchased a 5D mark III and have already put about 1k shots through it. I think I have more or less gotten it figured out pretty good and set up the way I like it.(upgraded from 7D) I was however wondering if there is a book or guide that the people here recommend reading in regards to how things like the servo mode af functions and how to set it up optimally for different types of sports? In particular for things like hockey, soccer and wildlife tracking (deer, moose and birds).

I shoot mostly landscape and portraits but for the odd time when I am shooting fast moving subjects I want to make sure I at least have the required knowledge to not miss the shot.

Any tips or book/reading material recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Mike

Does it normal with my 600 EX-RT ??

I just used my 600 EX-RT couple of times, when i was playing with it today at home, i heard a noise every time i turned it on ... after checking it a lot, I figured that this noise is occurred while flash head is ZOOMING IN or OUT....
Is this noise normal with any other speed light, or there is something wrong in mine,

Thanks for ur help

A Wedding Photographer's Look at the Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD

For those still considering this lens, here's my take on my first wedding done with the lens:

http://www.dustinabbott.net/2012/12/a-wedding-photographers-look-at-the-tamron-sp-24-70mm-f2-8-di-vc-usd/

I have given quite a few examples and reviewed it more from the perspective of professional use in that type of setting.

Here's one of the photos from last weekend:

Purchase advice for second Speedlite

Hello everybody.

I'm in the market for a second speedlite (for more creative flash lighting), and I have a somewhat tough choice to make.

I have a 430EX II and an ST-E2. I am looking at getting a 600EX-RT as my new flash instead of another 430EX II.

1. I read around the net and did not find any reference to IR triggering with the 600EX. Can it only be triggered by a radio transmitter when it's off the shoe or can it also be fired by a ST-E2 (solo or together with a 430)?

2. Aside from the higher guide number of the 600, is there any other advantage for it over the 430?

I am also thinking that maybe just a second 430EX II will be a more practical choice. Getting the 600 on the other hand may be a good choice if I want to move on to RT.

Looking forward for your great opinion.

Thanks.

My brand new 5D Mark III - what am I doing wrong, please help!

Hey everyone, I need some help about settings of my new 5D Mark III

I received it 3 days ago and the very next day I went to a basketball game of a friend of mine to test it. I am coming from 550D which I know is much less complicated to set up but still the results from my new camera were discouraging. I also got "Canon 5D Mark III Experience" by Doug Klostermann, it seems amazing but in 1 day I had the time only to skim through the most important parts from it.

My lens is 135 f2 L and every shot with it and my 550D was very crisp and bright and sharp.
On the 5D Mark III I tried everything I could but the results were dim and dark
T87_A0061.jpg

I was shooting on Manual, @ f2, 1/320 to 1/500 sec, Auto ISO. The ISO indicator was changing from 200 to 800 I think. The results were all dark like that... I tried with fixed ISO 1000. Then at the one end of the court the pictures were bright enough but at close they were still dark (and I don't think I can change ISO every time the attack changes the sides, at least I never had to do it with my 550D).
The lighting in the hall was not very strong but it was far from what is portrayed in these photos. I tried different settings of WB and found out Auto was the best. I also tried different metering - it did not improve anything. Also is it normal that the image gets so dark in the corners???

I know it's me, but what am I doing wrong, please help!

P.S. I am not shooting in RAW, at least not when I am shooting just for pleasure, but these JPEGs should be much better, no?

Canon 6D Raw Sample Images With Comparison To 5D2 And 5D3

http://www.metrodcphotography.com/review/canon-6d-raw-sample-images/

You can download the raw files at the link. It's three scenes, I setup my tripod with the 70-200mm on it and just switched the bodies so it was the same scene with the three cameras. From ISO 800 up to the highest for each camera going in 1 stop increments. Don't have the jpegs up yet.

Canon EF 35 f/2 IS Resolution Test

From LensRentals.com

Roger and Aaron at LensRentals.com have tested the resolution on a small batch of the new Canon EF 35 f/2 IS lens.

The lens performed better than the EF 35 f/2 that it was replacing, especially noticeable in the corners. While center resolution remains about the same. They compared the lens against the original EF 35 f/2, the EF 35 f/1.4L, and Sigma 35 f/1.4.

Battle of 35mm Lenses – Higher Numbers are Better

The real winner here appears to be the Sigma 35 f/1.4. Canon is going to have to make their sharpest wide angle prime ever to outdo the Sigma. It just happens that Norman Camera has the Sigma 35 f/1.4 in stock for $899.

LensRentals.com’s conclusion

I’m afraid this is a rather dull and boring post that doesn’t tell you anything you probably hadn’t already assumed. If you like to shoot 35mm and need Image Stabilization for the type of shooting you do, this will be a very nice lens and worth the money. Otherwise, you’re probably better off with something else.

Canon 100mm f2 usm vs 70-200mm f4l (non-is) vs 135mm f2L

Yes I understand these lens are, in a number of ways, very different but just wandering what people's opinion of each is.

My reasons -

100mm f2 USM - great aperture + sharp, relatively inexpensive (could therefore afford a flashgun also) + is small + nice focal length - but not L/is fixed focal length which might not be long enough on full frame.

70-200mm f4l - not great aperture but usable - great zoom range which is useful as I shoot landscapes + good build. - but is quite large comparatively speaking, and is not subtle.

135mm f2l - amazing sharpness + aperture -is subtle for focal length - but v expensive & fixed focal length.

I mainly shoot landscapes and I need a tele to get some nice compressed shots. Hoping to do some more portrait.

How far we have come

I was cleaning up stuff at work and sending off old gear to disposal..... including about a half dozen polaroid oscilliscope cameras..... one still had unused film in it so I had to give it a try, but the film was so far out of date I got nothing.... yet another casualty of digital, but it got me thinking

It is amazing how far we have come in digital photography. My first camera was ISO100 only, 320 by 200 pixels and 8 bit color.... and I got nice pictures with it! Now thats the size of the thumbnail images. I remember when the 1Mpixel camera came out. by the time we hit 5 megapixels people were saying that there was no need to go any bigger. My first DSLR was 8Mpixels, and has ISO range from 100 to 1600, but 800 was very grainy and 1600 was a joke...

Now we have 40+Mbit images, ISO over 100,000, image stabilization, and our cameras have several orders of magnitude more computing power than what took Neil Armstrong to the moon..... WOW!
