Free and Inexpensive Video Editors

I'm looking for a free or inexpensive video editor.
My requirements are:
* Produce high quality videos
* Add titles
* Add music
* Currently only a single video source is planned (from an EOS 6D)
* Use externally recorded sound (sync & use)

Evaluating each of the reasonably rated free video editors looks like a daunting task:
• Avidemux v 2.6
• (Windows Live) Movie Maker v 2012
• Blender 2.64a (cool interface!)
• Jahshaka v2.0
• Video Edit Master v 2.0
• VSDC Free Video Editor v 1.2.1

If free won't cut it, I'd like to spend less than $100.

Thanks,
Drew

*UPDATE 2*

A new 50mm will be coming in 2013, as the 35 f/2 gets replaced with a new IS version. The EF 24-70 f/4L IS definitely coming, which we knew for sure. I’m willing to wager the pricing below is also not accurate. I probably shouldn’t have posted unconfirmed information about these 2 lenses so quickly.

*UPDATE*

Below is some unconfirmed information in regards to price and weight of the new EF 24-70 f/4L IS, rate it as [CR1] for now.

EF 24-70 f/4L IS $849 and weighing 545g

EF 50 f/1.4 IS $799

As mentioned earlier, I’m confident about the new 24-70, but the 2nd lens, I’m not 100% sure on. There are so many coming down the pipeline.

Two New Lenses

We hear that Canon will announce two new lenses very shortly.

We’re pretty sure one of them will be the EF 24-70 f/4L IS, still working out the second one. There are lots of candidates including the 14-24 f/2.8L, 100-400 f/4-5.6L IS, 50 f/1.4, 50 f/2 IS, 135 f/2L IS and the 35 f/1.4L II.

More to come…..

EOS 6D Recording Video & Sound

I'm doing my research on how best to shoot audio and video with the new EOS 6D. I see that the 6D does not have a headphone socket. And according to C|Net, the mic input is mono.
It looks like something like the Tascam DR-07MKII Portable Digital Audio Recorder would be a great audio solution.
Now for the question: What is the easiest way to do a one-person shoot involving camera movement when using an external audio recorder? Is there an easy way to mount the Tascam on something like the Opteka X-GRIP Camcorder Stabilizing Video Handle? Or do you just place the recorder out of view and move the camera and not worry about the mic moving with the camera?

Solutions? Suggestions?
The only thing that is set is the camera -- the EOS 6D.... plus, I will not be hiring a boom operator!

Thanks,
Drew

Next lens, round 2

Ok, I now own the Canon 5dM3 and the T4i. I shoot models, families, events and soon I am scheduled to shoot 2 weddings.

I own the 35L, the 85 1.8, the 100 L 2.8 macro, the 24-105 f4, the 70-200 f4 non IS, and the Ef-s 10-22 and 17-55 2.8 IS.

Do I use the combo of bodies or just sell my EF-S glass to get the 24-70 2.8 II and maybe upgrade my 70-200? Any other lens I should be looking at or am I already Good to go?

1Dx ISO100 high DR shadows SNR improvement

One of the weak sides of the 1Dx is noise in deep shadows at base ISO.
It seems that nobody is arguing about that any more.
DXO 1Dx measurement results also show that very clearly on their measurement curves.
And I believe that nobody would be arguing that performance in this area is very critical for not just few people but for many people - for landscape photography, evening/night city shots and other sort of photography.
Though it is easy to argue that that Nikon D800 would be the better choice BUT why not to see how we could get better deep shadow SNR from 1Dx.
In one of my posts I mentioned that 1Dx has a very nice feature that could be used for that.
I will not name it now (will do at SOME next post) but here is some magic - example how it works (snapshots from LR screen - noise reduction is totally disabled )
1. First image shows 1dX shot at IS100 with EV=(-3) the Data Color noise calibration chart which was used for Noise Ninja NR S/W and PS plug-in. Shot with manual Out of Focus to blur target texture so it would not interfere with noise
2. Second one is the same with Exposure slider in LR set to +3 - looks the same as normal shot with EV=0
3. Third image is 200% crop of shot with EV=0 showing normal 1Dx ISO shadow noise
4. Fourth one is 200% crop of the EV=-3 shot with LR exposure set to +3 to raise shadows to normal level.
Level of 1Dx noise at ISO100 at -3 EV shadows is very clearly seen

And next post is little bit of magic - the similar EV=(-3) shoot from 1Dx recovered in LR - 200% crop to see the difference in SNR for random nose with the previous shot.

Canon 6d for video?

I'm wondering your thoughts about how well the canon 6d will do with video? will the one sd card be a factor?

I love shooting photos and videos equally, I just sold my t3i, which was great for video. But the photographer side of me was bored with the camera, I wanted more. So I thought it was the perfect time to upgrade since the 6d is coming out.

However the 5d mark II is down in price. Should I go with the 5d and save the money for an additional lens? Do you think it will go down even more when the 6d is released in December?

I'm mostly set on the 6d, Although I wasn't entirely blown away with the video canon released showing the video features. And I also don't have any great lenses (except for the nifty fifty) so I will be getting the 24-105mm. I had a 10-22mm canon but sold it. I do love the ultra wideness. if I get the 5d I may get the 17-40mm, but with the 6d, its kinda too much.

Just trying to get the most bang for my buck, so to speak.

cheers!

I have more money than I do needs... so what should be my next step?

I've been a SLR owner for about nearly 4 years now. I own a 60D body, 24-105mm f/4L IS, 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro, and 50mm f/1.4. I also have a 430ex II speedlite. I have about $1600 in cash and I'm not quite sure what to spend it on. I have a 9 year old so she is my main subject. In the past 12 months I have photographed indoor plays, outdoor Easter egg hunts, night time "bonfires", swimming pool shots, football games (she's a cheerleader but I really enjoy photographing the players), and I will be photographing indoor basketball games under crappy gym lighting. I don't shoot a lot of wide angle and a bunch of my shots would be considered sports action or portraiture with pleasing blurry bokehs.

No one probably cares about the process, but I want to illustrate that I have had a ton of different lenses. I started with a Canon XS which was upgraded to a 60D after two years. In regards to lenses, I had the kit lens (18-55mm) which I eventually upgraded to a 24-105mm f/4L USM. I started with a 75-300mm which was upgraded to a 55-250mm after one year to a 70-300mm (briefly) to a 70-200mm f/4L USM (briefly) to a 70-200mm f/2.8L USM (briefly), to finally nothing. Finally, I had a 50mm f/1.8 which I upgraded to the 50mmm f/1.4. And I picked up a 100mm f/2.8L IS macro along the way.

I like my 60D, but I would seriously consider upgrading to a 5D mkii if I find a deal for around $1200 which isn't completely out of the realm of reason if I sell a bundled printer and the kit lens (24-105mm).

I think the biggest thing about upgrading bodies is that I will have Micro auto focus adjustment... and while I was underwhelmed by both 70-200's I had, I think if I am able to 100% lock into my target, I would be substantially more pleased with the results. But I'm not sure I'm willing to go back to that well of disappointment. Maybe I might dip into 70-200mm f/4L IS or the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS mkii (the non IS f/2.8 was heavy, but it really didn't bother me so I doubt the IS version would cause me to complain). But IS shouldn't be a factor since the shots I were taking were at 1/4000 of a second or faster... so it really comes down to the performance of the lens v. the quality of shot I received using the 100mm f/2.8L Macro.

Having said that, if I buy the 5dmkii, I will only have 400 left in reserves to get anything else. I really don't want to part with my 60d, but I know selling the used body for $650 (if I'm lucky) would then bump me back up to $1050 and again can buy another lens.

I've also considered a refurb 135mm f/2L direct from Canon. The best case scenario is if I buy one during their sales and I pay around $740. That would leave me with $860 and maybe I go ahead and dip my toe back into the 70-200's and get the f/4L IS. That would be $914, but I can get away with spending $55 over my budget.

I know there is a huge fight between those who prefer primes over zooms and I don't want to start one of those, but I've also considered a 300mm f/4L IS prime. But I read reviews that it is not good for panning and it is older technology from 2008 (which sounds silly) but I do have concerns shooting with a 300mm prime with limited IS on a crop sensor.

I've also considered a fisheye... but that's just for fun and is really low on my priority list.

So my question is... would an upgrade to the body with one additional lens (whether it is the 135mm f/2 or the 300mm f/4L IS or even the 70-200mm f/4L IS) be the best bang for my respective buck. Or should I stick with my 60D which has good low light performance (though not on par with the 5dmk ii or the 5dmk iii) and just get new lenses. It's not an easy decision.

OR is there something I'm not considering that would be an even better fit that I'm just completely ignorant about (and if someone mentions Nikon, I'll punch you in the face!).

Thanks for your help because I really have ambivalent feelings about both directions.

New 50mm

I’ve received word from two different sources that a new 50mm lens would be on the way “soon”. One person suggested it would “probably” have IS. No mention of aperture, but judging by past mentions of a new 50mm, it would be a replacement for the near ancient 50mm f/1.4.

Outside of the 50 and 24-70 f/4, the rest of Q4′s announcements are said to be cinema related.

More soon…

Canon 5D Mark III + Broncolor RFS

I'm trying to get a 5D Mark III to trigger some Broncolor Minicom 80 Flash Units by using a Broncom RFS transmitter.
Triggering the flashes with the "Test" button on the transmitter works fine, but I haven't yet got the flashes to sync with the camera while I checked the camera settings a few times to make sure that flash firing is enabled and the sync cord is plugged in.

Thank you all in advance for your help.

Amazon.co.uk's D800 price is killing me!!!

[Here in the UK, we have to pay at least 20% more than in the USA (VAT), so please bear this in mind when I quote prices]

I really want a 5D MkIII and if the D800 were the same price, I would buy the Canon. The problem for me is that the D800 is still very tempting and its price on the aforementioned website is £1907.64, compared to £2339.00 for the 5D MkIII (@ Camera World). In fact the Canon is priced identically to the 'premium' D800e! The disparity in prices would go a long way to offsetting the cost of switching lenses...

I'm really not looking to start yet another 5D MkIII versus D800 debate, I just want some consolation :'(

Please Canon, drop your price to match the D800 and my decision would be simple!!!

1DX Distortion Correction - Question

Hi,

I can't seem to find in the menu how to correct 1dx distortion correction. i came from a nikon camera and I can set auto distortion correction to on. I can't seem to find the same option in my 1dx camera.
I can only see it when I try to convert raw files to jpgs in-camera.

Question:

Is distortion correction applied automatically in JPGs?
Or am I missing something here. I do see that I can do distortion correction..

Thanks

Canon 24-70 II Or Primes Particularly 50MM 1.2L

hi,

i'm thinking of getting 24-70 l ii but i'm reeading pretty much mixed reviews on it.

Right now, I have 24, 35 and 85. I may sell the 24 just to get the 24-70 ii. Or I might just use the money to buy the 50....

any advise? Should I sell the 24 and get the 24-70 ii or should I just complete the set with 50 1.2. As of the moment, I don't have any standard zoom lens, I could live without one but if the 24-70 ii is that nice, then I'd rather get that...

would appreciate your advise.

also, is it easy to correct distortion of 24-70 ii?

Thanks!

1d4 or 1d3 +lens

Howdy folks,
I've been visiting here for a while as a guest, finely decided to join up. Looks like a group of wise Canon lovers. I need some of that knowledge and advise now.
Here's what I have, 50d, 28-135, 70-300 both kit lens, and a 100-400 L 5.6. What my question is....
I have the money to buy either a 1d4 alone, or a 1d3 and a 70-200L 2.8 I am starting to shoot some sports, and want more fps the 50d only has 6fps while the 1d has 10fps. I'm not a pro photog and likely will never be, I just love to shoot pics.
If it were you which choice would you make and why. All replies will we welcome and appreciated.
Thanks

Trip to Namibia next year... what gear?

Hi,
i currently own a Canon EOS 400D (rebel xti)
and some lame kit lenses (18-55mm f4,5-5,6 & 80-200mm f4,5-5,6).

I have a trip sheduled early next year for 2 weeks in Namibia. For what i've read of the tour there will be a lot of landscape, as well as animals & people portraits photography opportunities.

So, if you had to go there, what gear would you recommand (even if it involve a massive upgrade of my current gear)?

Thx for you help.
