I know that they other websites geared towards travel, but what I am looking for is feedack from people that have been there with more than just a pocket P&S camera.
Planning got there this late summer, for a 18 or 21 day trek.
If you have been there and took your DSLR with you, which lenses did work the best, and which one you missed the most, or wished you had?
Tripod and flash are a plus or just extra weight? Issues with recharging batteries?

Does anyone have knowledge of an Android photo slideshow (or organization) app that will recognize photos that have been "rated" by the 5D III?

Here is the scenario... Shooting weddings/events, I would like to be able to hit the rate button on the 5D to identify a limited number of good shots taken during the early parts of event. At the reception, I would like to take the microSD card (in an adapter and recording JPEGs) out of the camera, insert it into my Transformer Prime Android tablet and quickly call up just those rated photos into a slideshow program to be displayed on the tablet for guests. I have accomplished this in the past but it has required a laptop in the middle to sort the photos and write to a microSD card. I would like to make this a seamless and quick move which should be able to be accomplished with the GREAT addition of the dual card slots!

I see a couple of ways to do this where the android photo app could read the rating and automatically sort the photos for view. Another option would be an Android file browser that could recognize the rating and I could copy the files from the microSD card that have ratings to the tablet or a different directory and play from there.

Does anyone have experience trying to do this?

This lens is half the price of the Canon version and it has VC (IS), when the results are this good what is the point in paying twice as much for a lens which hasn't even made it to market properly yet, weighs a ton & doesn't have IS?

I've noticed in the last couple of months that Canon's prices for their lenses have risen here in the US. For example, a friend of mine bought the 50mm f1.2 about 6 weeks ago for $1400 on Amazon. That lens now sells for $1600 on Amazon. I bought the 24-70mm f2.8 L about 3 months ago for $1250 from B&H, and that same lens is not $1400.

Did Canon raise their lens prices, or is that just a byproduct of a weak dollar?

In real­ity, the leak will change about 1/3 of a stop from what the cam­era con­sid­ers the “proper” expo­sure. With the high dynamic range that RAW files deliver nowa­days I believe the issue is being push a bit too far. Of course I’d be pissed pay­ing $3,500 for a cam­era with issues, but tech­ni­cally speak­ing, I would not stop using it if I had it.

My wife has a canon xsi with the kit 18-55 a 55-250 and a 50 1.8

She wants something new but will never spend the money herself (hey - life is short)

I am going to get her a 5dmkii here is the lense question. The kit on the 5dmkii has the 24-105L $2900 ON ADORAMA.

She like to take pics of kids and people, usually at the park or outside.

Occasionally landscapes.

Should I go with the 5dmkii kit with 24-105L or something else? The camera and 24-70L 2.8 would be closer to $3700 bought separately. Not quite ready to spend that much.

I've posted a few times here, and as mentioned, I'm about to buy a 5D Mark III.

I'm likely going to start with Aperture as my post processing tool.

Is there a good primer out there anyone knows of, to read through and get a grip on the process for shooting RAW, and then processing them? I've never done this before, and would like to start studying up on the workflow and process for this.

Something that gives settings on the camera to use...and then things you want to do once you are in post.

I'm hoping for something online, a good primer with examples maybe?

Earlier one of the Swedish shop (http://www.cyberphoto.se/info.php?article=ST-E3) listed the ST-E3-RT as available in end of April, but is now listed as delivery date unknown...

I put together the weather-sealing diagrams from Canon and Nikon on these cameras and it looks like the 5D3 is more robustly sealed. The 5D3 is also quite a bit better then the 5D2 it replaces with a larger use of gaskets around many of the dials. Canon seems to have done well sealing this body for the elements. Both bodies look great though in general.

I notice the 5D3 has additional sealing in the top LCD, the mounting brackets for the camera strap, tripod mount, diopter adjustment wheel and two switches on the back of the D800 which lack any sealing (from these diagrams). Not sure of the function of these switches so I don't know if sealing would be required, but I am guessing they would be. But who knows

I emailed Canon regarding the repair procedure of the affected 5D Mark III's.

"... But even for the unfixed cameras there will be a free of charge service offered at our service station to replace the light shield from 10th of may."

"According to the information I have it is a light shield between LCD-Illumination and Exposure sensor located at the prism unit."

the BG-E11 has been delayed until later May. What happen to Canon? Everything has been delayed except 5D3

I'm pretty sure this crop/full frame debate is soon to go the way of the blue ray vs. hd dvd debate... it will be made irrelevant by the advancement of technology. The D800 has pretty much shown us the future. If you have a high megapixel camera, crop becomes irrelevant. The D800 switches between 1.0, 1.2 and 1.5 crops effortlessly with 36/26/16 MP files respectively. A 50MP camera gets us to almost 20MP at a 1.6 crop.

Of course this will probably only hold true for the top of the line models, at least for a while, but I wouldn't be buying any EF-S lenses in the interim. I wouldn't be thinking of making a long-term commitment to EF-S glass if I were at all serious about my future photography plans.

So the 7D Mark II may well be the last semi-pro crop sensor camera that comes out. I know that I haven't really seen Canon investing in a lot of new high-level EF-S glass.

Just, you know... throwin' it out there.

I have just spent close to three hours reviewing the Nikon Rumors blog entries on the Nikon D800, and the horror stories of several users that have received their brand new D800s bodies only to experience several functional issues included but not limited to out-of-focus on certain high-end lenses, white/black dots on photos specially on long exposures, black dots on sensor (oil drops/debris) from factory shipped cameras, on/off lockup, green tint of LCD display, hiss on audio recording, flash not triggering, and others... After reading and assessing these functional issues, and considering that every newly released product may be subject to functional "bugs" which may or may had not been discovered and/or detected during the beta testings; it is my opinion that the severity of the initial handful of functional issues that some users are experiencing with their Canon 5D Mark III are not even close to the pile of serious and critical malfunctions that the D800 is having...

I went to Canon CPS event in Los Angeles today. Just got back and I had to get these photos/video up.

As a photographer, I was much more interested in playing with the 1DC. So while everybody was in another room in a Q&A Session with Shane Hurlbut, I snuck off to play with this bad boy.

I was able to get hands-on experience with this monster for about an hour. It was just me, the Canon Rep, and a bunch of lenses in the room

The camera itself felt great in my hands. I thought it would be really heavy, but I didn't find the weight cumbersome at all. It felt really balanced and fit my big hands perfectly. I probably could have snuck in a CF card since there were times where the Canon rep wasn't paying attention (I had access to it as if it was my own).

Canon 1D C Shutter Speed

I decided on a one year plan to pay for some big glass. I do portraits and the 135mm f2 is my money maker but i'd like more compression but I have a problem.

I've read the 200 F2 is the best portrait lens ever made but its more expensive than the 300mm. Also if i buy it and a 1.4 Extender, i will also have a 30mm 2.8. So why does any one buy a 300 2.8 for portraits?

What should i get for my situation?

I pre-ordered a 1Dx and just bought a 2nd hand 1D mk IV and plan on testing them out vs my 7d. Anyone else interested in my results?

I'm due to collect my shiny new 5DIII in a few days having finally upgraded from my trusty 20D. One thing I'm curious to know is how effective I can expect the automatic sensor cleaning to be on the new camera. My 20D predates automatic sensor cleaning and I have to clean it manually probably twice a year (I estimate I get through about 10,000 exposures a year and in this time open the body up to dust exposure by changing the lens probably about 500 times). These days I don't worry too much about getting the sensor swab out and cleaning the 20D myself but that's because I'm not worried about doing any damage to what is now an inexpensive camera! I'd appreciate others' feedback on their experience with more modern Canon bodies that offer auto-cleaning; do you never see dust on the sensor at all?

Hi, I am looking for advice on whether to move up to full-frame or stick with the crop-camera route.

Background: I am an amateur who knows the basics of working with dSLRs – had a film SLR for twenty years before I went digital. However, lately I don’t have much time to focus on photography between work and chasing after my young kids (6 and 4). My 7 year old Rebel XT (current lens lineup is: 17-55 2.8, 85 1.8, and 70-300mm DO) has delivered some great shots over the years but I am now looking into getting a new camera body for the following reasons:

1) Not so dependable AF especially indoors where I go into manual mode sometimes to try to keep shutter speed up. AF seems to hunt and/or not focus successfully on the spot that I was aiming at.

2) AF not so good at capturing action. Not taking pics of sports cars but trying to get perfect shot of baseball swing or child running towards me with soccer ball.

3) Limited high ISO capabilities – I am not a big fan of on-camera flash and am considering experimenting with some off-camera lighting for family portraits etc but neither is practical for school plays or dance/piano recitals.

I have been reading through the various forum threads and now thinking about whether to get the best (AF and low-light) crop camera that may arrive in Fall (don’t need much in summer as nearly everything will be outdoors where the XT is fine except for a bit of soccer) or invest in a full-frame camera such as the 5D Mark III and change out my crop lens. In either case I will be keeping the camera for a number of years and anticipate need to deal with faster action as the kids grow older. I will mostly be taking pictures of the kids plus some travel shots.

I can afford the Mark III but money is money and am wondering if it will be a good use of money and worth the weight of carrying around a heavier camera.

Questions:
1) If I usually print @ 8x10 or less with the rare 16x20 will I will be able to detect a difference in IQ?

2) Since I usually don’t go above ISO 800 nowadays given the XT’s limitations – whether ISO 6400 is plenty good for school plays/recitals? it seems from some threads that the Mark III is doing ok 12,800 or even 25,600 granted I can’t tell how well they print.
