Cheapish standard / short tele replacement / upgrade

Hi folks,

Nifty fifty was playing up last night, return of the old err01 fault.

So thinking of taking the opportunity to replace.

Something along similar lines...

standard / short tele perspective (I'm on APS-C)

Likely options... Canon 50mm f1.4, Sigma 50mm f1.4, Canon 35mm f2.0, Sigma 30mm f1.4, Samyang 35mm f1.4, not got zeiss money just now, don't mind manual lenses. Think the shorty forty might be at least a stop too dark (and want to avoid duplication, already have an f2.8 zoom that covers 40)

Thoughts.

I don't want to hear about how great the 50mm f1.2 or 35mm f1.4 are. I'm not going to buy them, so save your typing.

Thanks

5D III Q-screen

The Q-screen on my 7D shows the selected AF area (ie all points, single point, zone AF, etc) which I find to be very useful. The 5D III Q-screen does not seem to have this, or I have not found a way to enable it. So on the 5D III the only way I can determine the current camera setting is to look through the VF and press the shutter button halfway.

I emailed Canon to suggest they include it in the next firmware update - although I received an acknowledgement of my email I did not get a direct response.

Anyone else think this would be useful? - if so it might help for more people to make the suggestion to Canon.

Blown out reds

I recently shot some images using a Canon 7D with the 85mm 1.8 and anytime there was anything red or pink in the shot it just kept blowing it out. See the image for what I mean. I know it can be fixed easily in LR etc but is there any way to prevent it in camera? under-expose all shots with red? I already use the faithful picture style so the colors don't run too vibrant but is it just this lens or is it the camera? I also shot some pics today with my 50mm 1.8 and it did the same thing with pink in the shot. What am I doing wrong?

Thoughts on the New EOS-1D X Firmware 1.1.1

<strong>Red AF Point Illumination…..

</strong>…. sort of.</p>
<p>Canon did a great thing and listened to the wishes of their customers, and spent some considerable time changing the way the AF point illumination worked on the EOS-1D X in AI Servo. Instead of a solid red illumination like the EOS-1D Mark IV, we now get a blinking AF point. Why does it blink instead of being solid? It probably has something to do with metering. While the blinking AF point is a new thing for all of us, I think we’ll get used to it in no time. I may actually take this camera over the 1D4 for lowlight shooting and birding.</p>
<p><strong>My preferred new settings for the EOS-1D X</strong></p>
<p><em>Menu > AF5 > AF Status in viewfinder > Show outside of frame</em>

I do this because the blinking “AF” graphic in the viewfinder is quite distracting</p>
<p><em>Menu > AF5 > VF Display illumination > Enable: On > Q > Illuminated: Normal</em>

I found the “Brighter” setting to be a bit distracting this AM while shooting some avian creatures. I will probably add this setting to “My Menu”, just in case there’s a situation where the brighter point is needed.</p>
<p><strong>f/8

</strong>I haven’t had the chance to try it out yet, I have an EF 800 f/5.6L IS at home, however there are no teleconverters here. I hope to get out this evening in the yard and do some shooting with a 1.4x TC.</p>
<p><strong>EF70-300 f/4-5.6L IS supported with a teleconverter?

</strong>f/8 support with the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS! Yes, Canon has put this lens on the list of lenses that are supported now. As most of you know, mounting a TC to the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS is mostly not possible. However, if you zoom the lens to about 250mm, the rear element retracts enough inside the lens to mount a 1.4TC. I would only recommend doing this as a last resort. If I did put a 1.4TC on the 70-300L, I would put it right to 300mm and not move it from there. I’ll give that a go tonight and see how it goes. As most of you know, <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/reviews/ef-70-300-f4-5-6l-is-review/" target="_blank">I love the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS</a>.</p>
<p><strong>What about my EOS 5D Mark III?

</strong>It may not be as simple as just updating the firmware in the same way. If you remember the <a href="http://www.birdsasart-blog.com/2012/08/30/mega-amazing-discovery-800-f5-6-1-4x-tc-canon-eos-1dx/" target="_blank">story about getting f/8 to work on the EOS-1D X with a Kenko teleconverter</a>, Arthur Morris was unable to make the EOS 5D Mark III do the same thing with the exact same teleconverter. The fact that Canon hasn’t updated both cameras at the same time tells me there are indeed differences in the AF systems. I am reminded only the EOS-1 line has ever had f/8 autofocus, so it may not be something that gets added to the 5D Mark III anyway.</p>
<p>The red AF points in AI Servo mode, I’d wager we’ll be seeing it in the EOS 5D Mark III in the near future.</p>

Red AF in AI-Servo fixed in 1D-X before 5D Mk III

Why do you think this was addressed earlier than the 5d mark III, despite the 5d being released "long" before the 1dx?

The simple answer would be: The 1dx costs more. "Professionals" demand it. etc.

But I don't think there are too many amateurs running around out there with $3000 bodies.

I was relatively unconcerned with the large amount of discontent with the 5d mark iii preformance, personally feeling that the camera fit its role.

I am, however; utterly pissed that Canon chose to overlook the fact that there are thousands of 5d mk3 users out there that have demanded, more or less, that the AF in AI Servo be changed through a simple firmware update, and instead, offer it to the 1dx that has been out for a fraction of the time.

I love Canon, but this really irks me, maybe unjustifiably, but irks me none the less, and where better to rant than cr?

Grrrrr.

Here's the deal okay...

I shoot weddings, senior portraits and street style photography. I have a 5D MKii and enjoy it thoroughly. I found a ridiculously amazing deal on a Canon 1vHS & love it. Using this EOS-1 Series body has spoiled me, and having more than 9 AF points is lovely. I HATE GRABBING MY 5D MKii...

I've got all the "Wedding Glass" with the exception of maybe the 135mm/f2 or 85mm/f1.2.... But that's not the problem...

I have recently become obsessed with film. However...

Pros:
Pictures look sexy.
Nostalgic.

Cons:
Film is expensive.

I've run across a wedding photography who shoots medium format (film) and his pictures are breathtaking... They are insane. But ITS FILM, and medium format at that! $$$$

So, I'm at this weird crossroads where everything is hitting me all at one time. I've got great gear, more than enough to make anyone happy. I've worked hard for my gear. And I think I'm just ready for a fresh start. I am familiar with Leica's and comfortable with manually focusing. I use to use Nikon equipment so I'm familiar with it. I've never shot medium format. I love the look of the Canon 1.2 primes...

It's truly a mid-camera crisis. Again, I'm not afraid of fresh starts. I'm just looking for some advice from the peeps here before I get in over my head.

Suggested upgrade path?

Current kit consists of 450D, Nifty 50, 2 Old Sigma lenses pre digital, kit 18-55 and Yunguno 565ex.

I do family portraits and christmas cards for friends etc, as well as an wedding as 2nd shooter. I've done 6 this year.

Looking at the 6D as my next body as with event photography I totally see the limits of the 450 and need better High Iso performance.

So would it be alright to do Body and then down the road Tamron 24-70 since its half the cost of Canon 24-70L2 I know glass is a big limiting factor in image quality but if I could only afford 1 big purchase a year what would you choose? Camera then glass or Glass and then camera.

Canon EOS-1D X Firmware 1.1.1 Now Available

<p><strong>EOS-1D X Firmware 1.1.1 Available for Download</strong>

To support the needs of wedding, portrait, sports, wildlife, and theatrical performance photographers working in low light, AF points in the EOS-1D X’s viewfinder can now be illuminated in red with a half-press of the shutter in AI Servo AF mode, for easy viewing of the selected point. Illumination is intermittent, not continuous, and does not interfere with metering accuracy. Two brightness levels are available for the most suitable level of illumination in dark settings and illumination is fully compatible with the range of focus points and focus zone selection options on the EOS-1D X.</p>
<p>For best results, the following additional menu settings are suggested when using AF Point Illumination in AI Servo AF mode with Firmware Ver. 1.1.1:</p>
<ol>
<li>AF Point Display During Focus should be set to the first option, Selected (constant). This setting will allow the camera to display the selected focusing point while the shutter button is pressed halfway.</li>
<li>Optionally, AI Servo 1st Image Priority can be set to Focus Priority to ensure that focus is achieved before the shutter is released.</li>
<li>If you wish to recompose the image after focusing in AI Servo AF, use the EOS-1D X Custom Control menu to change the setting for half-press of the shutter button from “Metering and AF Start” to “Metering Start.” This will allow you to control focusing with the AF-ON button. Once you are satisfied with the focus, lift your thumb off the AF-ON button, recompose and shoot.</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Crosstype AF Available for Maximum Apertures as Small as f/8

</strong>Ideal for wildlife photographers and others who often use Canon EF super-telephoto lenses with extenders, the new firmware allows cross-type autofocusing with the center AF point when the maximum aperture becomes as small as f/8. This new feature greatly expands the range of EF lens/extender combinations that support autofocus when used with the EOS-1D X. Please refer to the list of compatible lenses below.</p>
<p>If AF point expansion is selected with an f/8 maximum aperture lens/extender combination, the four AF points surrounding the center point will act as AF Assist points. This option effectively expands the size of the AF detection area to enhance autofocus performance with subjects that appear small in the viewfinder and difficult to track, such as small animals and birds in flight. AF points above and below the center will be sensitive to vertical contrast, while points to the left and right will be sensitive to horizontal contrast.</p>

Help! Portrait tips needed

This weekend I will be shooting portraits of my sisters for this year's christmas card. I will be taking them at the chicago Botanic Gardens, that I know for sure. However, if anyone out there could suggest a good place within the gardens to take a semi formal portrait it would be greatly appreciated! (preferably with stone/brick walls, planters, just not a lot of flowers and grasses) Also, if anyone has some secret outdoor portrait tips that would be great too! Hurry, I'm doing this on sunday!

Canon is on top again!

With the EOS 1Dx, Canon has the best AF (after the f/8 focusing and black focus point fix), best frame rates, best low light ever, and of course the best pro sensor according to the rumored DxO leaks.

And it sucks for those using lower tiered Canon products with older sensor tech, but Canon's flagship has certainly been crowned the undisputed king of pro bodies. Hopefully now the lower tiered products get the same superior sensor in the future. May be 6D is that breed of new superior sensors coming out. Watch out sonikon, Canon is back with a vengeance!

Fixing 5D II lens mount issue, experience?

Or any camera. Just wondering any experiences people have had sending in their camera to fix/tweak the camera's flange problems. For instance I had a 24L from lensrentals that showed issues and wound up swapping it out for a 21 Zeiss, which is showing the same problem. In short it's clearly my camera that is the problem and I guess canon can fix it. With those lenses on my 5D II at infinity(manual live view) the left side pays pretty hard in softness. But focus them inside infinity much and the right side pays badly. Before sending it off and giving them $200 I'm wondering how well things change. Knowing how I do things, I'll get it back and it will be doing the same thing.

It is crazy how much this is affecting that focal range. Takes about F6.3 on the Zeiss to get its left side to where the right side is already at at F2.8. Not sure that was even getting it there. I'm also just wondering how common this is for people to even know to need fixing. Bet the lens gets blamed a lot more often than it should just over this issue.

Here is an example with the Canon 24L.

http://www.extremeinstability.com/24.jpg full frame
http://www.extremeinstability.com/24-3.jpg side crops F4 focused about the porch or backside of tree(was trying to use something in the center)
http://www.extremeinstability.com/24-1.jpg focused infinity on the roofline you can see it swaps sides.

Training: Any comments for the Lynda.com training site for photo/vid/tools?

Hi Folks,

I'm not sure which forum really to post this question....guessing this is as good as any.

I thought in my readings on the forums here, that I'd seen recommendations for the lynda.com training program.

I was looking through it, and they DO have a lot of content on Photography, Lighting...and for tools like FCPX, Aperture3, Adobe...etc.

Does anyone have experience with them....and could share their thoughts on the content, lessons and if it is worth the price of admission over there?

TIA,

Has anyone ordered from www.lightnspace. com?

I ordered a camera strap from lighspace.com that supposedly shipped a month ago and I still haven't received it. I was just wondering if anyone else has ordered from this site and if they received their order? I must admit that it looks like a scam site. Don't even ask me why I ordered from there. What's also weird is I can't find a single review about it and it's been active for 2.5 years.

<p><strong>UPDATE

</strong>It appears as though Canon jumped the gun on this announcement, and have pulled the press release. However,  I do expect to see it some time in the 7 days. I would also hope to see a 5D Mark III firmware update as well. I’ll keep asking around.<strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., October 17, 2012</strong> – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced a new firmware update in response to user requests which further enhances the capabilities of Canon’s flagship EOS-1D X Digital SLR camera. The EOS-1D X will now be capable of AF point illumination during AI Servo AF and cross-type AF for maximum apertures as small as f/8. The new firmware update is available now at no charge from the Canon U.S.A. website and can be downloaded by end users or through Canon Factory Service Centers.</p>
<p><strong>AF Point Illumination During AI Servo AF

</strong>To support the needs of wedding, portrait, sports, wildlife, and theatrical performance photographers working in low light, the new firmware allows AF points in the EOS-1D X’s viewfinder to be illuminated in red when the shutter button is pressed halfway during AI Servo AF, for easy viewing of the selected point. This valuable feature will enhance the photographers’ ability to aim the camera accurately in low-light conditions, and when photographing dark subjects. To preserve exposure-metering accuracy, illumination is intermittent, not continuous. Three choices will be selectable from the menu system – Non-illuminated, Illuminated (Normal) and Illuminated (Brighter).</p>
<p><strong>Cross-Type AF Support at f/8

</strong>The EOS-1D X is equipped with an innovative 61-point High Density Reticular AF System featuring up to 41 cross-type AF points, depending on the lens in use. The cross-type AF points recognize a wide variety of subject matter, making them highly desirable for maximum autofocus performance. Until now, cross-type AF on the EOS-1D X has been limited to EF lenses and lens/extender combinations with a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or larger. The new firmware allows cross-type autofocusing with the center AF point even when the maximum aperture of a Canon EF lens/extender combination becomes as small as f/8. Ideal for wildlife photographers and others who often use EF super-telephoto lenses with extenders, this new feature greatly expands the range of EF lens/extender combinations that support autofocus when used with the EOS-1D X.</p>
<p>If AF point expansion is selected with an f/8 maximum aperture lens/extender combination, the four AF points surrounding the center point will act as AF Assist points. This option effectively expands the size of the AF detection area to enhance autofocus performance with subjects that are small in the frame and difficult to track, such as small animals and birds in flight. AF points above and below the center will be sensitive to vertical contrast, while points to the left and right will be sensitive to horizontal contrast.</p>

Canon EF 24-70 F/2.8L II USM Zoom Ring Smoothness

Does anyone experience this?
I mean, how smooth is your zoom ring on mk2 24-70?
Mine is stiffer than on my 24-70 mk1 (I've already sold it, so can't compare anymore).
When I hold the lens attached to a body horizontally, the rotation of the zoom ring not quite as smooth-zooming as the 24-70 L I.
When I hold the lens downwards and zoom in (to 70 mm) it's smooth-zooming as mkI. But zooming out (to 24 mm) in the same (down) position makes zooming stiffer.
And when I hold the lens upwards, zooming in (to 70mm) is stiff and zooming out (to 24mm) is smooth again.

Shuttle Endeavour's 26th Mission

I wanted to take photographs of the shuttle early on its final journey on the streets of Los Angeles, but I was only able to get away from my obligations about 24 hours after the move started. My only chance was very early on Saturday morning, the 13th of October. I drove about 60 miles from home to Inglewood where I was able to catch the shuttle a few blocks before it arrived at the Forum. It was my first time in the area, and with no time to set up and no press pass, I was just there to take what I could from the situation. It was run and gun style shooting. Lenses used- 28-300mmL, 16-35mmL II, bodies 5D2.

Post your street photos of the shuttle here.

Canon Announcements Next Week? [CR1]

HTML:
<div name="googleone_share_1" style="position:relative;z-index:5;float: right; /*margin: 70px 0 0 0;*/ top:70px; right:120px; width:0;"><g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://www.canonrumors.com/?p=11660"></g:plusone></div><div style="float: right; margin:0 0 70px 70px;"><a href="https://twitter.com/share" class="twitter-share-button" data-count="vertical" data-url="http://www.canonrumors.com/?p=11660">Tweet</a></div>
<p><strong>For PhotoPlus 2012

</strong>A few murmurs about Canon announcements next week. All the talk about a development announcement for a large megapixel camera have gone completely quiet. Most of what was talked about was from new sources, known sources said they hadn’t heard anything.</p>
<p>There is some talk about lens announcements taking place early next week. Although no one is committing to which lenses will get announced. The usual suspects are an EF 35 f/1.4L II and the EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x. The latter is the most likely, with the other less of a possibility. I do expect something from Canon, but they’re holding their cards pretty close to the chest.</p>
<p>From reports earlier in the year, we’re still two short on the DSLR/Mirrorless announcements for 2012 and a few lenses as well. However, with the production problems Canon has had with lenses, it’s a good bet a lot of things have been delayed.</p>
<p>What DSLRs could be coming in 2012? The first would be the EOS-1D C becoming official, that would leave one more camera to be announced in 2012. My bet would have been on a Rebel T4, however we’re getting pretty close to the Christmas shopping season for an announcement like that. With the problems they’ve had with the Rebel 650D, it’s possible that too has been delayed. The big megapixel camera, would be a development announcement with availability well into 2013 according to most. We’ll have to see if that comes to fruition.</p>
<p>We also hope to find out about delays in production of the EF 500 f/4L IS II & EF 600 f/4L IS II, the last I heard we won’t see them until November.</p>

Estimates on backorder times?

If anyone has any insight into how long Canon's backorder list is for the older version of the 24-70 2.8l, I will love you forever.

Here's my situation:

I'm leaving for Japan on Nov. 21, and I've decided that this trip warrants throwing some good glass onto my 40d, which is a crop sensor but it's all I can afford at the moment and I love it.

Unfortunately, I sat on the fence too long, and didn't buy the 24-70 "L" lens I desperately want. I'm terrified of buying a used lens for $1,300, and while I can find the lens online (it's not available at my local camera shop) it's on back order.

I've placed my name on a waiting list for official Canon refurb lenses, but I have no idea how long it will take to actually get my lens.

So, long story short, what are the chances that I'll get this discontinued lens from Canon before Nov. 21 (it's Oct. 16 as I write this), or should I just try to be smart about finding a lightly used one?

Is it acceptable that 1 out of 5 copies of the 24-70mm II are really great?

Canon is charging twice as much as both the last version and much more than Nikon charges for the 24-70mm II, and by all the data Canon has provided it is a lens that deserves the price tag because it is in a class of it's own in quality, at least in theory.

Unfortunately there have been many early tests that have been extremely dissapointing for the lens MTF wise.

- If you average all the tests that Bryan of The-Digital-Picture.com did, the lens at equal aperture does not even perform better than the 24-105mm IS, which is less than 1/3rd the price.

- If you look at the photozone.de test results, the lens they tested (which is obviously not an ideal copy) performs worse than Nikon's 24-70mm f/2.8, which is much cheaper. In fact it performs within as close as makes no difference (3%) as the Tamron 24-70mm VC on photozone, which is a lens that is half as expensive and has image stabilization.

With that said, after trying 5 copies of the 24-70mm f/2.8L Mark II Bryan from the-digital-picture.com did find a lens that meets it's claims and smashes resolution figures and expecations. A lens worth the price tag. He is very very happy with it now.

What are everyone else's thoughts on the fact that you need to buy 5 copies to get one that meets the hype Canon gave it and the quality a lens of this price would have one expect?

G15 Low Light Test Images

Hi,

I took a series of low light images spanning the complete ISO range of the G15 and posted the nine unretouched CR2 RAW images in a zip file. The lower the file name, the lower the ISO. For example:

IMG_0073 = ISO 80

IMG_0074 = ISO 100

.

IMG_0081 = ISO 12800

I mounted the G15 on a tripod and used the 2 second timer mode for each shot so my hand would not cause camera shake. The camera was in ‘P’ mode. You can download the zip file (~130 meg) containing these RAW images at:

http://www.zanerian.com/G15.zip

I also posted the camera’s corresponding unretouched jpg files to the zip file (~27 megs) at the following url:
