Update for the EF 24-105 f/4 L ?

We've been treated to a lot of new products from Canon recently. I wonder if there have been any rumors about a new updated version of the EF 24-105 f/4 L . The current original version is 7 years old, and has some known issues, such as distortion and a tight zoom range on the wide end. Makes sense to me that a replacement would be in the works. I have the version 1 of the EF 24-70 f/2.8 L and like it very much. No doubt I'd like the version 2 even better, but both 24-70 f/2.8 lenses are on the heavy side, and I was thinking of getting a high IQ but lighter lens to use as a walkaround, general purpose lens. Has anyone heard anything about a replacement or would like to make a comment?

Value for your money - has this ever been uttered by Canon ?

I was just reading this little bit of an interview with Nikon's Dirk Jasper, published on DPreview:

www.dpreview.com/articles/7228819844/photokina-2012-interview-dirk-jasper-of-nikon

It mostly discusses the new D600 but I like the very last line, a point I don't remember Canon ever mentioning.

"Even second hand, or refurbished, a good lens is still worth its price, ten or twenty years later. Especially for enthusiasts, backwards and downwards compatibility is very important. Once you invest your money in a system it must be safe. You must get value for money. "

We do know that Canon glass, especially the L series stuff from the last 10 or 12 years, does hold its value extremely well. In fact, it's been my best performing investment ever!

But I take the context of Dirk's comment to imply the whole camera-lens system.
Even OUT of context, I'd like to hear Canon say, and mean, they intend to offer good value for money. Something I think the new 6D fails to deliver and something the 5D3 didn't exactly deliver at its intro price either.

How do you sell your gear?

Hello all.

New to the forum, but I've been a long time visitor to the site. I'm sorry if this has been discussed before, but I'm having a tough time selling some gear. I'm trying to sell my canon ef-s 17-55. I've had it up on Craigslist for a few weeks with about 1 or 2 interested in buying that have backed out of at the last minute. I really don't want to put it on ebay to avoid fees.

I was just curious if anyone knew of any other outlets to sell used gear.

Thanks for any suggestions.

EdMika Launches the FDn to EOS Adaptor

<strong>From EdMika

</strong>This new EdMika adapter fits many more lenses than previous kits we have made. This conversion kit includes 1x EdMika FDn-EOS-A brass adapter body, 1x EdLink, 1x EdShield and 1x rear EOS cap. You only need to have your own good quality small phillips screwdriver to do the conversion. The main brass adapter body will fit most FDn mount lenses but will not fit any of the older FD lenses that are the silver ring/breech lock mounts. So far I have full kits for the lenses listed in the chart below. These kits allow you to replace the original mount with an EOS mount that will give infinity focus AND will allow you to control the aperture as well. This give you much better image quality compared to the usual FD-EOS adapters available for sale. Those cheap standard adapters use corrective lenses to give infinity focus and with that you lose so much detail as well as a stop of light that it is just not worth using.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?icep_ff3=2&pub=5574981434&toolid=10001&campid=5337164561&customid=&icep_item=170911278282&ipn=psmain&icep_vectorid=229466&kwid=902099&mtid=824&kw=lg" target="_blank">Buy the EdMika FDn to EOS Adaptor</a> | <a href="http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?ff3=4&pub=5574981434&toolid=10001&campid=5337164561&customid=&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.ca%2Fsch%2Fed_mika%2Fm.html%3F_nkw%3D%26_armrs%3D1%26_from%3D%26_ipg%3D%26_trksid%3Dp3686" target="_blank">View Other EdMika Adaptors</a></strong></p>
<p>Read more about compatibility and learn how to install these fine adaptors after the break.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>If you have Canon FDn mount lenses that are not on this list you will still be able to mount the brass adapter and get infinity focusing on most of them but you would not have aperture control, you would have to shoot wide open only. The FDn 7.5mm Fisheye has a different bolt pattern so I will be making a different adapter for it. I am still working on many more lens kits and plan on having the FDn 50mm 1.2L and FDn 85mm 1.2L kits soon after I develop an EdTraveller to hold the rear aspherical lens element in those lenses. I will also be coming out with kits for the 20-35L and 50-300L zooms and many more as I develop the EdLinks needed to control the aperture. There will not be a kit for the FDn 20mm 2.8 or the FDn 85mm 1.8 since they are missing the holes and screws I normally attach my EdLink to. There is a way to make the 85mm 1.8 work but you would have to get the EdMika kit for the 100mm f/2, grind down the height of the EdLink by about 4mm and find a cheap/broken donor FDn lens and use the grey ring from it instead of the original no hole one in the 85mm 1.8.</p>
<p>As always each EdMika adapter comes with the latest Generation 4 Dandelion chip that will come to you preprogrammed with your lens focal length and reporting the maximum aperture. These chips are mostly useful for proper light metering and EXIF data reporting but they are also focus confirmation chips. I recommend using 10x live view for most accurate focus or getting a good focus screen. You can program the chip through your camera and calibrate the focus spot but I find accuracy is so so.</p>
<p>360 Brass was chosen over stainless steel or aluminum because brass is softer than camera and lens flanges ensuring no surface damage yet it is still strong enough to hold on through even heavy abuse. It also allowed us to skip coatings so we could maintain higher tolerances because of the variability of a coating process and because glue holding af-confirm chips bonds well to bare metal but poorly to coatings.</p>
<p>Some of these converted lenses come in contact with the thick mirror of the 5D2 and less thick mirror of the 5D3 and a couple contact the 1D4. This does no damage to the lens or mirror (I have hit thousands of times now) and can be overcome by focusing closer, going to live view and then focusing up to infinity. All crop sensor bodies are safe with no mirror hits on any lens at any focus distance. The below chart gives an idea of distances before mirror contact on which lenses and bodies. Some full frame shooters shave the mirror slightly to overcome the contact issue if they don’t want to use the live view workaround.</p>

<p>When you purchase this adapter kit you must include a PayPal note with the type of lens from the above list that you want to convert so I can send you the proper EdLink and proper EdShield. If there is no note included I will attempt to contact you through your paypal email address to ask this question again and if I do not get an answer within a day I will Include the EdShield and EdLink that will only work for the FDn 50mm 1.4 lens. If you include more than one lens in the note for a single adapter purchase I will send the parts for only the first one you mention. For now we are not selling extra EdLinks or EdShields separately from adapter bodies.</p>

5D3 + 70-200 IS II Stabilization issue

I just got my 5D3 yesterday after having my 5D2 stolen a month ago. It's awesome!

What I'm wondering is if anyone else has a problem with their 70-200 IS II. When using the image stabilization on that lens, the mechanism will jump to the right after I take a frame in normal one shot and high speed burst mode. It doesn't occur when I shoot in silent mode. Basically, when I shoot bursts at 6fps, the first frame is sharp and the subsequent frames have horizontal camera shake.

This was never a problem with my 5D2 and testing on my original 5D shows the lens is not the problem.
I've changed and toggled lots of settings in the 5D3 and still no change.
I am using firmware 1.1.3.

Does anyone else experience this problem? I filed a report with canon and am waiting on their response.

5D3 owners: What do you wish you knew?

My new body is "out for delivery." I've been reading the 404 page manual for the past few days, familiarizing myself with the settings and AF options. What do you wish you'd known the first day? Any customizations that you've found to make life easier? Here's your chance to impart your wisdom.

And not that anyone asked, but the 135L is going to be the first thing I slap on that puppy. :)

Hasselblad at Photokina and lensrentals sense of humour :-)

Hasselblad has announced their new 5000 Euro camera based on Nex-7. Why writing here about it?
Recently we have seen mirrorless from Canon. Each day here is a fight here between Sony and Canon sensors. And Hasselblad makes the real use of it making it's own case and some buttons for the Nex-7 and selling it as their own new product for the price of new 5D3 + 70-200 2.8 II.
http://www.hasselblad-lunar.com/index.php/home/

Guys at lensrentals.com are in a great shape as always, so they announced their own version: http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2012/09/product-announcement-lensrentals-looney

LOL :D

Some more info on the subject:
http://www.bjp-online.com/british-journal-of-photography/news/2206278/photokina-2012-hasselblad-to-launch-mirrorless-compact-camera
http://www.bjp-online.com/british-journal-of-photography/news/2206781/hasselblad-were-not-robbing-people-off-with-lunar-camera

"If you take Canon, for example, all of their DSLRs look the same, but their Powershot cameras have a completely different look, and the same is true of its mirrorless model. So, the question is: ‘What is the Canon style?' What we're doing is designing three cameras – a compact camera, a DSLR and a mirrorless – with the same style," Alessandrini (Hasselblad's new business development manager) tells BJP."

EOS Remote App.. for other cameras?

Looks like a great idea! I'm already using the Capture One remote capture (which requires a wifi laptop tethered to the camera) so the Canon implementation looks miles better.

I note in the screen grabs that the 7D is mentioned, is this a function that can work with the WFT grip? What about a T3i with Eye-Fi card?

Been looking for a less clumsy way of doing things and this app looks great! Not going to buy a 6D though.

5d iii + wireless flash

Hi,

I'd like to take photos with wireless flash with my 5diii.

I have a 430EX, 4 manual Panasonic flashes and two 350w strobes.

I'll need to use: TTL, HSS, 2nd curtain wirelessly and I need something reliable.

Q1) I'm considering 600ex-rt & st-e3-rt. How could I add my existing flashes to fire with this setup?

Q2) The 600ex-rt & st-e3-rt is a little pricey [$860 @ B&H], so is there a more cost-effective way?

Thanks,
Andy

PS 2x 600s and 1x e3 could probably be ideal, but I'm not a professional photographer so I wish to avoid spending so much.

Sigma 180mm 2.8 Macro

Received this the other day. I haven't had much of a chance to take some "proper" macro shots with it, but in just messing around the house with it- I'm quite impressed with the sharpness- Especially when using the Sigma 1.4x TC. Two gripes that I have are the size- It is massive compared to the 100mm 2.8 L and also it isn't weather sealed. Anyhow, here are a few around-the-house test shots (all wide open, however some are @ f4 due to TC):

Why Hasselblad?

Disclaimer: This is not a thread meant to trash other manufacturers, nor do I hope that the thread develops in that direction. It is a question I pose out of genuine interest in the logic and motivation for buying into these medium format systems.

My main question is: Why would people buy a digital Hasselblad? In what situations would you need what a Hasselblad can deliver? Are there work situations where a Hasselblad or other medium format systems are required? (for instance do high end magazines require images captured with these systems?). Is the cost of a Hasselblad justified in terms of qualityrequirements anywhere? In Norway a Hasselbad H5D - 60 cost 312.031 NOK (41.988 Euro, http://interfoto.no/nettbutikk/kameraer/hasselblad/h-serien/Hasselblad-H5D-60-hus--3013662-p0000037293.aspx), while a 1DX cost 54.995 NOK (7.400 Euro, http://www.fotovideo.no/Produkter/Systemkamera/Canon/Canon-EOS-1D-X-Hus-18,1Mp,-12b-s,-Full-HD-127617-p0000148151.aspx) and a 5D III cost 24.499 for the body (3.297 Euro, http://www.fotovideo.no/Produkter/Systemkamera/Canon/Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-III-hus-22Mp,-fullformat,-6-b-sek,-DIGIC-5-pros-129195-p0000151276.aspx)

Background for my questions:

I have myself most of my gear in Canon. I am, apart from approximately 10 paid jobs pr. year, foremost an enthusiast. My bread and butter comes from my job as a lecturer in Marketing and marketing communication- related courses. I have in several of my lectures used quite a bit of time on the DSLR and compact camera market. Hence, both professionally and from a hobby point of view, I am very interested in hearing your answers to my questions.

Quality control issues with the 24-70 L II?

These two lenses should look exactly the same:
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=787&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=4&API=0&LensComp=787&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=1&FLIComp=4&APIComp=0

At the short end one is better, at the long end the other. But why? They should both look best for all focal lengths and never have passed the quality control.

Maybe the optical design has such low tolerances that Canon can't make it work properly and this was the reason for the long delays.

5D3 Bracketing

Hello Guys,

I was doing an interior shoot today and was Bracketing 3 shots so i could merge them later, But what I did realize that the camera did not cancel the bracket series after I took the 3 shots, it kept on going? am I doing something wrong? camera was set to 1 Shot, is this normal? I remember on the 5D2 that after you took a 3 shot bracket you had to re do your bracket setup and this is what I liked, as you know when your finished,

I'm not sure I have the correct functions set, I tried with both auto Bracketing Cancel enabled and disabled, it did nothing?

any help pls

also it makes no sense that the camera can take continuous 3 burst bracket once set to a 10 sec timer count down, but will not do that with the mirror lock up enabled, BUT WILL, if you select HDR mode! ugh! and have mirror lock up enabled!!!!!

Canon EOS 4D reference in Wifi remote app video

I was browsing the photos on Amazon's page yesterday for the 6D and watched this video: http://www.amazon.com/gp/mpd/permalink/m2OTAOA6NGA0HB/ref=ent_fb_link

At the 19 second mark, it sure looks to me that the app's header says 'Canon EOS 4D'. i have added a screenshot, but watch for yourself. For further research, see canons page for the EOS Remote app, it clearly shows how the 7D and 6D look in the header, and are nothing like what is in the video. http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/Digital_SLR/eos_remote.aspx

Commence Speculation.

DxOMark Sensor Performance: Nikon vs. Canon

Canon has some catching up to do with respect to sensor performance as measured by http://www.DxOMark.com. Canon doesn't even come close to the top performing Nikons. (High score is better.):

Pts Model
=======
96 Nikon D800E
95 Nikon D800
94 Nikon D600
81 Canon 5D III
79 Canon 5D II

(The Canon 1Dx is not yet rated.)
What are the chances that one of the reasons for the new sensor in the 6D is to catapult Canon's sensor performance into the mid 90's? I can't see Canon doing that considering the $3,500 EOS 5D III just came out and has a score of just 81. But Nikon's new $2,100 D600 kicks butt with a score of 94!

Sensor performance isn't everything... but, if I were to choose Nikon or Canon today, I wouldn't be choosing Canon.

EOS Bodies - Developing ranges....

This is just a thought since looking at where we are with Canons EOS Bodies..

I reckon the following is a simplified view of where Canon see their bodies and the lines/levels of development:

CROP BODIES

Entry: 1100D
Mid-range: 650D
Top-end: 7D

FULL FRAME BODIES

Entry: 6D
Mid-range: 5D Mk III
Top-end: 1D X

Notice that under the crop bodies there is nowhere for the xxD range. I'm seriously wondering given the ability of the xxxD range now starting with the 650D that there is no longer room/a need for the xxD range, and that the 60D/60Da will be the last in that line. It does simplify things somewhat in a similar way to the merging of the xD and xDS ranges.

What do you reckon? Am I on to something here or is this utter tosh? ;D
