1DX Owners: Read This Warning!

Monday, I was out shooting with the 1DX and MKIV and 500mmII. I was comparing the MKIV to the 1DX with the 1.4XIII attached. Everything was on a tripod and Wimberley. I set "both cameras to RAW only."

I shot about 500 shots with the 1DX for about 3 hours and when I got home the 1DX had "50 RAW files at 20MB each" and "450 Jpeg S files at 1MB each." I was in shock!

I figured I must have accidentally changed the setting from RAW to JPEG. However, If you look under the 2nd red menu buttons under (SHOOT2) this seems somewhat impossible, as you have to press a few buttons for this to change, so I thought.

So, I discovered that if you press the "Card Image Size Selection Button" (below the Image Playback Button, Pg. 117) and then turn the Main Dial only one notch to the left, you will change your image choice from the highest quality RAW to the lowest quality Jpeg! :o

I must have accidentally changed to Jpeg when I was taking the 1DX off of the 500mm lens/extender combo in order to mount the MKIV. Personally, I don't think that Canon should have the original setting as the default, or at least require you to press the SET button.

Everyone should try it now, so that you'll know what I'm talking about! Since I was comparing the MKIV and the 1DX, I was so focused (no pun intended) on framing the shot and setting the same exposures via the histograms that I didn't notice the change. After-all, I set both cameras to RAW and confirmed the word RAW on the Histogram screen! I can only imagine a wedding photographer accidentally changing this setting in the dark and not realizing it until the next day.

The good news is that you can change the "default" image size selection method to a different custom selection method.

Go into the orange menu; C.Fn4: Disp/Operation; it's the last choice, "Rec card, img size setting. You could change this default setting from "Rear LCD Panel" to "LCD monitor." Now, if you accidentally press the "Card Image Size Selection Button" you will see the setting change on the large LCD screen as it lights up, as opposed to the small dark LCD screen. For those that haven't noticed yet, the white menu choices are the defaults and once you choose a custom selection, then your menu choice turns blue.

I never accidentally changed this setting on the MKIV and it's "function button" appears recessed and on the 1DX, it's not. But for those interested, to change from RAW to Jpeg on the MKIV it's the function button next to the trash can and then one notch turn of the main dial. To prevent this from happening on the MKIV, you can change the default in C.FnIV:8-1 from rear LCD to LCD Monitor.

I hope that this info will save somebody one day! Luckily my test shots were not important, and they still looked pretty good considering they were only 1MB. :)

Upgrading from Canon 60D to 5D MkII: Help me decide!

I have been shooting quite a lot with the 60D for past 1.5 years. I must say I enjoyed shooting with this body even though it is not considered stellar. However, I am tempted to upgrade to the 5D Mark II but holding back for few reasons:

1) Is the IQ between the 60D and 5D huge? Like in the out of camera RAW files. Also I do a bit of PP in Lightroom.

2) I understand the ISO performance in the 5D is better than my 60D, but I tend to not go beyond 800 and try to stick to 100 as much as possible. Will I see substantial difference in ISO performance when shooting in ISO 800/1600. Or even at low ISO such as 100.

3) Any idea if 60D's AF system is better than 5D Mark II or not? I shoot wildlife, but not too often though. Mostly landscape, portraits, street, still life.

4) I have a 24-70 f2/8L, how likely will I get better results when paired with a 5D MkII. Is there any focus microadjustment function in 5D MkII?

5) They say bokeh quality in full frames are better/creamier, if that's true is it really that noticeable?

6) How about the dynamic range in 5D?

Any other points I may have left out or should be aware of? Thanks in advance.

This thread got me thinking. As Don Haines mentioned, there's a huge price gap between the 400mm f/5.6L USM and longer lenses, and surely there must be a market for something in-between. I think Canon could fit a 500m f/5.6L lens into that void. So what's the most you would be willing to pay for such a lens?

Need advise/shared experience on repair of 100-400L

Hi, so for the last few months I have found that my 100-400 was not focusing like before. So I did the brave thing and gave it to Canon to fix. They tell me that they need to change the focusing assembly and some IS part as well as some channel. The cost of repair is going to be Rs 25000 (about US$470) which is 25% the cost of a new lens in India. Now I love my lens and the cost of repair seems to be such that I think I should go ahead with it. If it was say 50% the cost of a new lens, I would have seriously considered purchasing a new lens. So I probably will repair it but thought I'd look for advise and experience from you all. My questions are:

Have you faced something like this? I have had this lens for over 6 years and bought it in the grey market.

Do you think the cost for repair is fair? I am still awaiting a mail from them outlining the details.

Do you think I should be quizzing them about anything else?
Thanks in advance.

Announcements Before Photokina

<strong>Next Week

</strong>Canon will be announcing new product next week in the lead up to Photokina. A few people have received invites to various press conferences around the globe.</p>
<p>So what can we expect to be announced?</p>
<p><strong>Printers

</strong>At least two new “pro” Pixma printers. These will be direct replacements for the Pixma 9000 Mark II & Pixma 9500 Mark II. They’ll be be a smaller Pixma Pro-1, one with dye and the other with pigment.</p>
<p>There will be no 17″ Pixma printer announced this go around, but there are murmurs we will finally see one in the near future.</p>
<p><strong>PowerShot

</strong>More PowerShot announcements are expected, a G12 replacement I’m told is likely, as well as a new fast lens PowerShot.<strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>EOS Body

</strong>There is next to no talk about a new EOS body for Photokina. The next camera will be a smaller full frame camera, when is still the question.</p>
<p><strong>Lenses

</strong>There has been talk of a new 400 f/5.6L being announced and not much else. I’ve had one other suggestion that a new couple of lenses for the EOS-M system could also be announced. A macro maybe?<strong> </strong></p>

580EX or 580EX II -which one to get?

I need a "master" flash to complete a dual flash setup (I have a 430EX) and am trying to decide between the 580EX or 580EX II. The latter has been reported faulty by design though I'm not sure if these are widespread problems or just exaggerations.
Would I be making a mistake in getting the less featured 580EX instead? I know the EX II can be controlled from the camera menu and has a better foot design, but the old model (580 EX) allows for easier switching between master and slave. I think there were some other advantages as well which has slipped my mind...

When having gotten the hang of a Canon wireless (IR) master/slave setup I expect to expand by getting a manual radio trigger (such as the Phottix Strato II) and possibly one or two additional speedlights (might as well be cheaper, non-Canon branded as this'll be manual triggering).

So, the 580EX or 580EX II? The former will most definitely be second/hand refurbished at a low price while the latter can probably be bought new for a little while longer (I suspect the 600 EX RT will fully take over once the old stocks have run out).

Should I stay with Canon or moving to Nikon

Hi all,

I am a newbie here, nice to meet you guys all.

I am now using EOS600D for 1.5 years and I am also now deciding to upgrade my camera. However, many of my friends encourage me to switch to Nikon with the following reason below:-

1. Better noise performance !!!!!
2. Better Image quaily !!!!!
3. All focus point light metering !!!!!
4. Faster control

I also have seen the review the comparison between canon and nikon (60D vs D7000, 7D vs D7000) and many reviewers also suggest that nikon is better (except the VDO mode).

For myself I am not in kind of bias to any brand and the investment is not a problem... but need your guys suggestions!!!!

e.g.

- why would you guys stay with Canon?
- The image quaily between Canon and Nikon are different?
- Is canon's noise performance really bad compare to nikon?
- Pros and cons for each brand
- etc...

P.s I am taking for both landscape and portrait

Many thanks

Tang.

Regrets -- Your One Missed Picture?

.
"Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention "

-Frank Sinatra
My Way

I just looked at a picture of a saguaro cactus and suddenly realized I never took a picture of one. From 1996 to 1999, I lived in Tucson -- could have stepped out on my balcony anytime and got a picture. Sadly, I wasn't taking pictures during that period. I don't think I took more than one or two rolls of film pictures in those three years.

Anyway, it got me thinking about missed pictures, ones that good, avid photographers might regret having missed. What was a picture that, for one reason or another, you just didn't get -- one you could have but it didn't happen? I don't mean going to the moon and snapping one of Armstrong's footprints. I mean one you probably could have taken, one you missed, one that failed that will never happen again.

Mine may be a saguaro in a desert sunset, maybe up in the purplish light of Sabino Canyon. I'll have to think about it. I don't think I'll ever get back to the Sonoran Desert, so that's a regret.

I'm curious. How about you?

What is meant by Shutter count in 5D Mk III menu?

I opened the box after receiving what I thought was a brand new 5DMk III from Adorama and was going through the menus and found a menu titled, "Shutter count" and to the right the number 209...Canon support tells me that this is some form of file numbering system in place from the factory and totally unrelated to shutter count as it is labeled. Why would it mean anything other than shutter count? That's like saying that the white balance setting is really the aperture setting isn't it? : ) I think I purchased a used camera under false pretenses. Would any of you concur?

Where can I find a 24-70 Series 1 sample file?

All,
I will be upgrading and have preordered a 24-70 Series 2. But for my current Series 1 I would like to know how the sharpness and/or CA stacks up. Can anyone contribute the location of sample files that can be reliable comparisons with which I can judge the performance of my existing lens? I know the subjects of my tests will be different but I think I can judge based on knowledge of the subjects I see in the sample files.

These files would have to be available at 100%, preferably not jpegs... a tough requirement. I will look on the www.slrgear.com site run by Imaging Resource (www.imaging-resource.com); I would like more than one source.

Thanks, in advance, for suggestions.

New to Canon Rumors

Hello all,

This is my first post in the forum so please be gentle with me.. I have been reading through the forum for the past six months tracking the slow progress of the 1DX and other things that have caught my eye during this time..

A little about myself if anyone is interested.. Im 23 ( just ) and am living in "sunny" North Devon in the UK, I work in a nation wide camera shop ( If you live in the UK then will know what shop I'm on about ) I truly enjoy my job working with photographic equipment and giving my advice to people.. Iv been into photography for over 8 years starting off with a Fuji S5000 bridge camera ( got to start somewhere ) and loved it..

Within the past 13 months I have seriously invested in Canon and mac equipment.. My kit list is rather long so I do apologise.. My first DSLR was a Canon 7D which was closely followed by the 5D MKII, Lens that I have in my kit are as following ( All canon lens )
15mm 2.8 Fisheye
50mm 1.4
24-70L 2.8
16-35L MKII 2.8
100mm L macro 2.8
70-200L 2.8 IS MKII
1.4x MKIII
2x MKIII
2 x 580 EX II

That was my entire kit until as of yesterday 03.09.12 where I was able to pick up my long awaited 1DX and 400mm 2.8 IS MKII and 24mm T&S .. One word to describe them AMAZING!!! With the little testing that iv done the results have just blown me away..

Now comes the sad part for me, as I was playing around with my new toy today I was taking some pics of my 3 year old black lab playing with a coiled pipe.. I got some great shots as she was jumping on this pipe right up until I got a mechanical error... I didn't think much of it as I thought it was a firmware issue. Removed the battery fired it back up fine, go to look through the viewfinder to see a weird looking line across... So I took the lens off and BANG out fell the focus screen on to the floor :( so now I have a scratched dirty focus screen.. I tried compressed air to knock off anything before placing it back in the camera but its not good... I feel a little miffed, Im going to contact CPS tomorrow and see what they will do.. I should have photographed it with one of my other bodies before I did anything, now I feel like they might turn around and say I have to pay for the repairs :(

Anyway sorry that was such a long intro to me, hope to hear back

Cheers
Alex

Nikon D7000 vs Canon 7D In the AF Area + Others

I was wondering if anybody has practical experience shooting both the Nikon D7000 and the Canon 7d and had anything to say about the Autofocus accuracy. The Nikon D7000 - at least the one I have - seems to be having some focusing issues. I wanted to explore the Canon side of things (without necessarily dumping Nikon) and have always been interested in the Canon 7D. All other differences between them being aside, does anybody here have any practical experience shooting with both cameras and can they tell me if either one is generally significantly better, or is the AF accuracy in both expected to be the same?

Actually any other comments on the Canon 7d vs Nikon D7000 comparison (from a PRACTICAL point of view, I know the differences in specs and price!) appreciated.

Canon EOS-1D X AF at f/8 with the Kenko 1.4TC

<strong>From Arthur Morris

</strong>Arthur has written a great article about getting f/8 autofocus with the new Canon EOS-1D X. A lot of birders used the EF 800 f/5.6L IS with the Canon 1.4x TC & EOS-1D Mark IV for example. The biggest complaint with the EOS-1D X has been the inability to get f/8 autofocus.</p>
<p>However, with the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/674565-REG/Kenko_PRO3001_4XDGXC_Teleplus_PRO_300_DG.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">Kenko Teleplus PRO 300 DGX 1.4</a> teleconverter you can give the EOS-1D X the ability to autofocus at f/8 with the EF 800 f/5.6L IS. Another plus of using the Kenko teleconverter is you’re able to move the AF point at f/8. With the Canon teleconverter on say, the 1D Mark IV, you only had the center AF point active.</p>
<p>Arthur has posted lots of images to show the image quality that is possible with the Kenko 1.4x TC.</p>
<p><strong>From Arthur Morris</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Once I got down in the mud I discovered that AF with the the Kenko Teleplus PRO 300 DGX 1.4x AF Teleconverter was fast and sure and accurate. I have been out every morning and afternoon since then and have totally fallen in love with the 1DX. That first afternoon I managed to get a huge gob of black, sticky, gooey much all over my brand new camera. It was a proper baptism.</p></blockquote>
