Photo lens - aperture vs resolving power....

For telescope observation it is a well known fact that resolving power is proportional to aperture - all other things being equal of course!

So lenses loose resolving power (ability to resolve fine detail) when they are stopped down. Yes of course in practice there are other factors to consider like colour fringing etc. that force you to stop down a little bit to get the best from your lens.

Just say I am photographing something small like the moon and I am lucky to have the Canon 400/2.8 and the Canon 400/5.6 to compare side by side with say a 550D.

The /2.8 will have four times the light grasp of the /5.6.

So presumably a much larger image crop is possible with the big lens (ie 4x image area or 2x the moon diameter?) and the /2.8 image crop will still look just as sharp as the smaller crop taken with the /5.6.

As the image of the moon on the sensor is so small than presumably the 550D with its high pixel density will be as good as any other current camera to photograph small images?

I'm sure its not that simple - so if anyone can guide me to a good source of information on this subject I would be much obliged.

PS In practice I would use a fast f4 reflector to get decent sized moon images at a tiny fraction of the cost of a 400/2.8!

Brief words

Received a brief bit of information regarding the upcoming Canon Cinema EOS 4K DSLR.

Apparently it won’t be available for purchase until Q4 2012 or early 2013. The announcement could come some time before then. Variations of the camera are in the wild, no specs are known beyond the 4K specification for the movie mode.

The form factor will apparently be in the form of a 1D style body as shown at the C300 announcement.

NAB 2012 is coming up in the middle of April, and we have heard nothing about a possible announcement before then.

24-70/70-200 (2.8 II) or Canon Primes?

Hi. What lenses would be wise for a beginning filmmaker/photographer? (I use stills and video equally). The 24-70 and 70-200 would be great for the range and the 2.8 aperture is useful. However, primes are sharper and have lower apertures. The primes I'm considering are the 24mm 1.4, 35mm 1.4, 50mm 1.2, 85mm 1.2, 100mm 2.8, and 135mm 2.0. Yes, the primes added up are more expensive, but they are an investment. Is 2.8 useful enough for low light? The zooms seem more versatile and covers a very good range. Also, I'm planning on getting a 5D, so it seems good for full-frame. So what would you guys do, invest in primes or zooms first? Thank you!

Zeiss 15mm 2,8/15 or Canon EF14mm f2.8 II

I really enjoy taking super wide photo's and looking to upgrade from my canon 10-22. I've shot with lense and really loved what it produced with my 7D. But I want to do more, so I'm waiting for my 5D mk III and looking to Ugrade my wide angle lense. I am considering to new zeiss but the extra expense is streching me. I wanted some opinions from canon community, should I purchase Zeiss 15mm 2,8/15 or Canon EF14mm f2.8 II? No manual vs. auto focus.

What about Canon Camcorders?

Hey all, i'm not sure if there is another forum to post about this sort of thing, but....

Any idea how long before we see a follow up to the Canon XF300 camcorder? I'm in the situation where i'm really looking for a new camera for video. The C300 is out of my price range, the XF300 is a couple years old, and i think shooting with the current EOS DSLR cameras doesn't sound like a great time. I'm waiting for NAB to see if there's anything else on the horizon that's built mainly for video. Of course, people seem to be waiting for the 4k Cinema DSLR.

Well, i'm hoping for either a simplified version of the C300, or... a new traditional camcorder with a slightly larger image sensor than the XF300 had (1/3"). I'm just not sure how often they refresh the semi-pro camcorder line!

Any idea when they might introduce a XF300 successor? Any clues that point to a "C100?" Guesses?

Upgrading from crop sensor.

I currently own a 600D/T3I.
I am wanting to move up to a full frame camera.
I shoot photos as well as video.
My question is, is the 5d3 really worth the extra money over the 5d2?
Personally, if I had a 5d2 I would NOT upgrade. But since I'm on a cropped sensor in need of an upgrade Im thinking "why not the best upgrade in my bracket)
Im hearing so many bad stories about quality of this new 5d3 though.
The reason why Im unsure between the two is this.
Better AF(if Im upgrading why go with half an upgrade).
5d2 doesn't do 1080p(but Im also hearing that the 5d3 also isn't 1080p. but more so just stretched pixels)
better low light performance in 5d3(yet Im hearing that is only the case with in camera processed jpgs)
5d2 can be bought refurbished for 2100 while the 5d3 will cost 3500.
Decisions decisions. I hear so many people talk about upgrading from 5d2 to 5d3.
Thats not to far of an upgrade. But the differences between a 5d3 and a t3i are plenty!
With that said, does one pay the extra cash for a HUGE upgrade from a t3i
or save almost 1500 and make a big upgrade(to the 5d2) from the t3i?

5DIII Video data rate, need faster cards

I Just realized today I need faster cards to handle the higher data rate in video when using the All-I compression method or this will happen.

I guess sometimes it pays to read the instruction book first. The good news though is that the videos aren't corrupted. They just won't play on the camera. I don't think I'll be using those cards again though for video.

For All-I, you need 30 MB/sec or faster with a CF card and 20MB/sec or faster with an SD card.

$0.02 on the difference between the Mark II and Mark III

Very briefly, since this isn't necessarily objective nor scientific... but I feel that the Mark III is orders of magnitude better than the Mark II.

I bought a Mark II at the beginning of the month wanting to save money and/or spend the difference in price on better glass. It's the same dilemma I see posted about time and time again.

Autofocus: I'm a portrait photographer (children and newborns, primarily) who is getting back into weddings, and I have to say that the new autofocus makes a WORLD of difference in the ratio of usable photos. In editing after a simple demo session with my own son, I only eliminated a handful of photos due to focus misfire, as opposed to the 1/3 I usually do with the Mark II. This will make a huge difference in saleable prints. The same goes for the noise level in higher ISOs. ISO 3200 looks like ISO 200 on my old 30D (likely much better).

Metering, Sensor, & IQ: I don't know what it is, but even though I shoot manual, the contrast and color quality of my shots came out so perfect that I could get away with no post processing in Lightroom if I was feeling lazy. That's a huge time savings in workflow. This makes a big difference when sorting through 3-400 images per shoot.

Mind you, I just upgraded from a 30D to a 5D Mark II just this month, and that upgrade didn't make me as giddy as the move from the Mark II to the III. And this is after only 20 minutes of shooting. I'm sure I'll have more opinions in the next few days.

5d3 Annoyances

This thread is intended for specific things Canon should be able to fix (easily?) in firmware updates.

I'll kick it off with an obvious one: Why can't HDR shooting be set as C1, C2 or C3 on the mode dial? The most natural thing I would want is to be able to just turn the mode dial to C3 and get an HDR shot...it would give me similar ability to AEB plus a nifty HDR shot ready made to ogle at. But not only will the custom mode not auto-update in HDR mode, it also grays out the whole custom mode menu item. Why? Who knows why? Why force us to menu dive to pull an HDR shot?

BUTTON REMAPPING!

Hey!
Just wanted to point out to people who are complaining about the zoom button being relocated... you can set the SET button to zoom! And... it is also a better spot for it, I think, because it is easier to hit with your thumb.

Additionally, RECORD/STOP can be set to the SHUTTER RELEASE button (you know, the black one near your pointer finger that we all forgot about ;-)!).

And in closing, there is a CONTROL OVER HDMI setting in the menu so I wouldn't be surprised to be a 3rd party device with an iPhone App (fingers crossed!). I want credit if someone develops that now though!

Cheers,
Harold.

5Dmk3 in camera lens aberration correction samples

Just a couple of test shots I just did to see the new to canon in camera lens aberration correction. Shot wide open in almost darkness (JPEG in camera NR off) with my 50mm 1.2. The nice thing is that there is the option to enable peripheral illumination (which is what I was turning on and off here) as well as a separate toggle for chromatic aberration (no fringing in this sample, so I left it on in both, but I can tell you it makes a really big difference in the daylight, especially with a 1.2 lens). I actually really like the vignette in the 50 1.2, I think it adds a lot of lens character and uniqueness but I think its pretty damn cool that I can just "turn it off" if I want a non vignetted f1.2 image. I also really like that I have independent control over CA and vignette, so I can always leave CA on and turn on and off vignette as I like....

What is the Real Cost of a 5D MK III versus a D800. Math Corrected!

What does a person have to pay for a Nikon D800 to match a Canon setup? I've taken a Canon 5D MK III lit with the 24-120mm L lens and top of the line flash versus the closest that nikon has to offer.

Here is the list.

Here are some prices of similar packages. You can argue about quality, but they are top of the line with similar specs. The secret is that Canon includes items in the package that Nikon Charges you for separately.

Nikon D800
Body - $3000
24-120 lens - $1296
Nikon SB-910- $547
Nikon Camera Control Pro $146
Nikon Capture NX2 $135
Total $5124 (Correction) :)

Canon 5D MK II
Body with lens kit $4300
24-105mm L (included in Kit) $0
Canon 600EX RT $630
Canon Camera Control Software $0
Canon Photo editing Software $0
Total $4930

Some may ask: What happens when you need service? Nikon is refusing to sell parts to the hundreds or thousands of small local camera repair outfits. You must send your camera to nikon or a authorixed repair station and pay big prices. They get you coming and going.

5DMKIII High Iso Raw Files for Download

I snapped a series of shots today while waiting for my engagement session to arrive, going from ISO 800 to 25600. These obviously aren't awesome test shots, just wanted to send out some samples for you all to pore over. I chose this spot because of the dark black vs white. I converted these to .DNG because Lightroom doesn't support the .CR2's quite yet, saved you the trouble.

Mk III ISO 100 Black Frame -- Cleaner Than We Thought?

Okay, opening this black frame in ACR shows a lot less read noise than I expected. I have to take the black clipping point to "0" to get it to show any noise, even when pushing it four stops/bringing the fill light way up. On my Mk II, just bringing the fill light up more than 30% can show banding noise. Is my sensor cleaner than we thought? Or am I doing something wrong?

Notice that the only difference is the black clipping point moving from "0" to "1."

And the raw black frame:

Canon marketing may be working overtime soon

Just think out loud.....
They have to be watching the Nikon US legal department as they try to figure out a way to rise the prices in the US. They probably won't be able to affect per-orders prices only halt delivery at the end of the month and then reprice.

If they do so, Canon will mostly like figure out a way to make the prices match without reduce the actual camera price say a $200 credit toward any L lens costing $1500 or more.

5D Mark III First Impressions

Canon is back in the game. To my eyes ISO 25,600 is as usable as ISO 6400 on the Mark II which opens up a whole new world of options. I'm pretty jazzed about that.

I've included some shots taken at night under tungsten light (no flash) as well as some panning shots and this bad boy really, really, impressed me. I didn't expect that Canon was really going to deliver this well

Canon really delivered! See my first impressions and some sample shots:
