1Dx Err 80 is only the beginning

>:(

I have been very disappointed to find this 6800.00 paper weight has even more issues.

First was error 80
Now it started when I turn it off and right back on or let it sleep and you default to 100 ISO
Next Defaults back to Flash and Ambi Exp Compensation set to center.
Also had some focus issues with it racking in and out and I have to let go of the Focus button and re focus and it works
with Custom funtion for AF on Button set to 14fps mode when you push it it actually puts it in one shot Silent Drive Mode.

I have 2 1D4's and 2 5D3's and t4i just for Cont. Focus Video no issues with the rest. or any of my lenses.

I will say that someday when they gets it fixed it will be FABULOUS I love all the new Controls and Buttons

Canon Really Stepped in it this Time.

They Told me end of the month before we see firmware and they could not tell me if my new issues would be addressed
only Err 80 for sure ( well maybe )

Just bought a new lens with a loose zoom grip...but it's a beautiful 80-200 2.8L

Guys...Gals...

big predicament here.

I just bought a magic drainpipe from a guy in AZ with a loose grip.
$(KGrHqJHJEME+cy6rtM6BQGJW8H)6!~~60_12.JPG

Why? Well...he doesn't have the end cap because the lens has been on the camera since the day he got it. The front element has had hoya glass on it since the beginning as well. Optically, this thing is described as mint. And if it isn't, I have 30 days to return it. (I'll make sure to send a lens cap)

What do I do? black Rubber bands? black or red Gaffers tape?

Any way to fix this? I was assuming CPS won't handle this type of problem on a lens from the late 80s early 90s.

Thanks!

1Dx AI-Servo frame rate question

So, when I have the camera set to One Shot, I get 12 frames a second.

But the second I change it over to AI SERVO, and hit the AF stop button (I have it custom set using the little star icon), the frame rate not only drops dramatically, but shoots 3 or 4 in a row, and then pauses, and then 3 or 4 in a row and pauses.

I have three 1Dx bodies here, and all do the same thing.

Anyone else notice this?

Thanks!

1DX New Quick Custom Function Shooting Mode

I found a nice quick setting adjustment for the 1DX that I would like to share!

Lets say you're shooting a stationary subject and then you want to quickly change your shooting mode and settings for a moving target. I have my M-Fn2 button set to switch between One Shot and AI Servo, but lets say that you want to quickly change all of your settings for a Bird in Flight Burst, without switching to a Custom Shooting mode, which has a few extra button presses.

Take a look at C.Fn5 Operation Menu, choose Custom Controls, then scroll down to AE Lock* Button, press Set scroll down to the "Camera Icon" and press "Info Button." Now you should be in Register/recall shooting functions and choose the settings that you want.

After you've finished with your selections, it's a bit confusing and it looks like you have to press Register Current Settings for these new settings to take affect, however, that button refers to the settings that are already currently set in the camera and not to the new registered choices that you have just selected above. So, just press menu when you're done

My settings are:

Shooting Mode: Manual
Shutter Speed: 1/1250sec
Aperture: 5.6
ISO Speed: Auto
Metering Mode: Evaluative
White Balance: AWB
AF area Selection mode: Manual Select Zone AF (a quick press of the Multi-cont brings you back to center)
Tracking Sensitivity: 0
Accel./decel.tracking: +1
AF pt. switching: +2
Servo 1st img priority: Equal
Servo 2nd img priority: Equal
AF start postion: Manually selected AF point
AF operation: ON

Some people may also like full 61Pt. AF area selection, but I have found that it can still miss smaller birds in flight, even in a clear sky but I'm still experimenting with the settings.

These Registered settings may be recalled from; P, AV, M,TV, and Bulb believe it or not, as well as from C1, C2, or C3 as far as I can tell.

Two settings that I noticed it doesn't have is for AI Servo and High Speed Continuous, which I'm always in when I'm shooting action. So also be aware that if you have One Shot and Single shooting selected in AF Drive mode, then you won't get a tracking burst, you'll just get one shot. If this ever happens by accident then obviously just keep pressing the shutter button while holding in the AE* lock button, if the action continues, then you may need to press AE* to re-lock focus as your subject distance changes. Personally, I would like to see AF Mode and Drive Mode added to these Custom Recall Settings. Don't worry, I'm making a list that I will send to Canon!

I also have ISO Safety Shift on by default so I don't blow out the sky when I'm using a fixed ISO, but when shooting in Manual, Auto ISO in Custom Controls above should also alleviate that problem!

Once you're done, and then you press the AE LOCK* Button you will be switched into your new settings as long as you continue to hold in the AE button*. The AE button also Auto-focuses so you just have to press AE* and shoot with the shutter button. I use AF-On for my default Auto-Focusing and not the shutter button, but even if you use the Shutter button to focus, once you press the AE* lock to recall your new shooting settings, the AE* button will also lock Auto-focus so that you won't re-focus on your subject when you press the shutter button to shoot.

Once you release the AE Lock* button you will be returned to your previous camera settings. I think it's great if you're shooting a stationary bird in AV mode and then all of a sudden a BIF or Big Foot comes along, and you have to quickly change your settings.

I hope the 5DIII has this feature too, hopefully someone can check and let us know!

5D3 for sports/action?

I'm looking for experience with shooting sports/action using a 5D Mk III, especially compared to the 7D.

I've had a 50D for almost 4 years now and I've been generally underwhelmed by the AF system, so I'm considering my options.

Right now I see four options: 7D (possibly used), 5D3, 1DX, or wait for a "7D2". I'm an amateur, the cost/value ratio of an 1DX would rather low regardless that I could find the money to buy it. 5D3 is kinda borderline. As for 7D, I'm hesitant since it is 3 years old and the sensor seems just as noisy as my 50D. I believe that a 7D2 will not show up until next year (at least).

I want a body at least at the level of the 50D (AFMA, size/metal body, UI), so the 60D or lower is not an option. Nor is defection to Nikon an option.

Knowing discussion boards, I anticipate that some will jump down my throat saying that I don't know how to use the camera. Thank you, I do believe I know how to operate the camera :)
So for information, I generally shoot in Manual, with either Spot AF or AI Servo, with only the center point selected. My lenses (17-40, 24-70, 70-200/2.8 IS I) are micro-adjusted to the body. I often have problems if the area that I'm focusing on is relatively small, but still larger than the AF box. Before the warranty expired, I had the camera checked at the Canon service center and they did not find any AF problems.

1Dx desire (A cautious approach)

First I'll qualify myself, "I am not a professional", "I'm just a guy who likes taking photos"...(hopefully that will ease the mind of the possible flamers)

About a year ago, like many people around the world I wandered into my local magazine shop for my free reading session; again like many I picked my favourite magazine and went straight to the centre-fold (even though I only buy it for the articles..)
There she was in all her glory Miss October 1Dx, with my heart racing and knees trembling, I replaced the magazine, so I could take one from the back ( I wanted a new untouched mag, one that no one had salivated on/breathed on; I wanted Miss October 1Dx pure).

I quickly paid and cautiously, I tucked it into my Lowepro bag, slung my 7D over my shoulder and quickly wandered home, where I had the privacy to study every curve, every line, the beauty that was Miss October 1Dx.

Fast forward one year, I still fantasise about Miss 1Dx, but this fantasy was replaced with Miss 5D3, (not the beauty queen, but a great reliable girlfriend)..

I thought I had dealt with my fantasy and resigned to never seeing Miss 1Dx in person, all that changed in the last two weeks, where I have seen this beauty 3 times.

The first time she was draped over the shoulder of a tourist from the Netherlands, ( I followed him for a while until I worked up the courage to approach him and ask him how she handled, after a short conversation I realised I knew more about his mistress than he did; he was a camera Hugh Hefner, for him it was about having something beautiful hanging off his arm... quote..."I'm still not sure what all the buttons do, I only shoot JPEG, now I have to sell my 5D3 that is only 6 months old".

The second time I saw her was a week later, attached to the hand of a Chinese tourist, all dolled up and looking beautiful, 600 EX-RT attached, 16-35 ii fitted, but he was abusing her; quickly moving her left, then right, up, down, at times not even looking at her....surely somewhere the Point and Shoot police would approach him and take her away, surely a better home could be found for her.

Today was the third time, but this time she was in the hands of a professional (RRS L Plate fitted) shooting some fashion, this time she was being handled by a representative of her maker (a photographer employed by Canon)..

I stood and watched him work for a while, then approached him, I had to get his point of view...as beautiful as she is, what's she like to work with...

What I didn't expect was his honesty...I couldn't have an in depth conversation, due to his Japanese accent/Language barrier...but what I did understand was there are still a few problems that need to be fixed, ones that he had noticed as well as reports from colleagues shooting the Olympics.

Quote..." With Canon support and the reports from the Olympics, these problems should be fixed in the next 4 to 5 months"

As I walked away (not surprised as I look at the CR forum daily) I looked at his other gear, what I saw brought a smile to my face, there on a table was his second camera, a beaten up, well used 1Dii.

As beautiful as Miss 1Dx is, sometimes it's your old girlfriend that is the better reliable option..

Having been an early 5Diii adopter, I will now sit back and wait, NO I don't need a 1Dx .... But I really want one...

Sekonic (or any other) Light Meter Question for Landscape readings

I recently read that the onboard light meter of your camera along with its histogram still are not as accurate as a Light Meter and can produce incorrect or slightly skewed factors hence my acquisition of the Sekonic L-358 Light Meter. I can't say enough great things about this device especially for determining accuracy in Aperture and Shutter in setting values in the camera's (M) Manual mode especially when using a strobe system - simply essential.

My question then may be for any seasoned Light Meter experts out there that shoot landscape scenes. I am aware I can change the Lumiscope on this device for outdoor use, however where does one take a light reading when shooting a mountain range as an example or any wide area to be photographed? I realize in some cases say with a baseball field you can walk to a particular point, get the light reading if you wanted and plug it in on your camera say for a particular object on the baseball field such as a dugout but what an inaccessible landscape? Or is the answer so simply as saying in the front of your camera? Thanks in advance

How good is the 7D autofocus system?

I was recently talking to a professional photographer friend about D800 vs 5D3 (both of which he uses extensively) and he strongly believes the 5D3 new autofocusing system is MUCH more accurate at low light in comparison its Nikon counterpart. He also told me about how Canon skin tones tend to better.. etc.. list goes on.. By the end I think im going to join the Canon side pretty soon.

Coming from a Nikon background, I'm not too familiar with anything Canon. Shortly after, I picked up my friend's 7D and i noticed the autofocusing was just bang on fast and amazing! Keep in mind I know the focusing is highly dependant on the lens too, i truly believe the 7D autofocusing system is solid.

Based on the rumours, it seems like the new 6D will inherit the 7D autofocusing system and the D600 will inherit the D7000 autofocusing system. I have already used the D7000 extensively in low light and it does its job decently, however, after picking up the 7D, I'm really unsure which one has the edge over the other.

A lot of the photography I do is done low light areas which is why this accuracy and speed in lightly lit areas will be the deciding factor. Can one of you more experience canon guys give me an unbiased opinion on the AF system in comparison to the D7000? Does the 7D low light accuracy resemble the godly 5D3 system I've heard about?

Thanks in advance!

Canon 5D MK3 not as sensitive to reds?

Hey All,

So I've been shooting some long exposures over the motorways in Auckland and I've found that the red trails of the cars not to be as thick as my friends 650D who shot at the same settings. I'm wondering is it my sensor?

We were shooting F11, 30s and ISO 100. Has anyone else experienced this? I might be doing something wrong, or maybe it's the lens? I used the 16-35 F2.8 II and 50 F1.2. While my mate was using the 18-135 STM on his 650D.

upgrading to full frame + seeking suggestions on what to replace 60mm macro with

I am fairly new to Canon Rumors but wanted some guidance from those shooters who upgraded from APS-C to Full Frame and what full frame macro lens they went with if they were shooting with the 60mm APS-C macro. I have the 60d and used the 60mm macro for closeups the last 18 months. The type of closeups I shot with the 60mm are babies feet, flowers, engagement rings/wedding ring type shots, and documents.

I plan to upgrade from the 60d to the 6d (or whatever the entry level full frame is called when it comes out) so I'll likely be getting rid of the 60mm since it's an ef-s. I know the 100mm 2.8 is l macro would be best lens to go with on the full frame and that I've basically been shooting with a 100mm since the 60mm x 1.6 is 96mm equivalent. However, I think I'll get the 17-40l (one of the reasons I am upgrading to ff is to get true wide angle / noncropped wide angle shots) first so the 100mm l isnt in my budget. Therefore I'm considering the 50mm f2.5 macro (mainly because of it's great price of $279) or regular 100mm macro.

Questions:

1.) I've seen a few reviews that mention that the af on the 50mm macro is noisy...but is it so noisy/loud that it would disturb a quiet baby?

2.) What has been the experience of shooters using the 50mm on a APS-C body (just in case I end up keeping the 60d)? On an APS-C the 50mm could serve as an 80mm equivalent when needed.

3.) What full frame macro lens did you select for full frame when upgrading from APS-C to full frame and why?

4.) If you have both the 50mm macro and 100mm macro do you find that you use them equally and for what kinds of shooting? (I'm thinking that the only shot I would use the 50mm macro for is documents).

Thanks!

Canon 5D Mark III v. Nikon D800 from an amateur's POV

First let me say, I have been an amateur hobby photographer for only 3 years. I started with a Nikon D90, then I moved to a D700, and I pre-order a D800 the day it was announced.

I finally received my D800 in May, but I did not like the camera at all. Half of my photos were out of focus, and the camera was just not fun to use! Frankly, I was regretting the purchase of the D800, and I was wishing I still had my D700.

After ready numerous reviews, last month I purchased the Canon 5D Mark III, and I love the camera! I just sold my D800 on eBay.

Here are the things I like about the 5D Mark III:

• 22 mps is the sweet spot for resolution
• High ISO performance
• 6 fps for action shots and sports
• The autofocus is quick
• The high resolution LCD
• The camera feels better in my hands than the D800 did
• The C1-C3 recall settings are great to have!

The few things I hope Canon will improve for the next version of 5D Mark III is the menu layout….it’s difficult to skip from one section on the menu to another. Also, as others have mentioned, the dynamic range is lacking compared to Nikon. I also wish the battery grip would give the camera 8 fps.

Here are a few photos I shot with the 5D Mark III.

Issue with the new Sigma Macro

An issue with the Sigma 180mm f/2.8 OS Macro on the 5D Mark III and EOS-1D X has been discovered by LensRentals.com. If this has caused anyone to pull their hair out, the solution is pretty simple, just turn off illumination correction.

Below is an image taken by LensRentals.com showing the phenomenon.

Sigma 180 f/2.8 OS Macro Issue – Click for larger

The Findings

The phenomenon shows up on Canon 5D Mk III and 1Dx cameras only. T4i and 7D bodies with firmware upgrade do NOT do this, nor do any other older cameras we could test.

The Sigma 180 OS and Sigma 150 OS macro lenses both show the effect and it’s identical. No other Sigma lenses that we stock showed the effect, nor did any Tamron or Tokina lenses. Obviously I can’t test what we don’t carry.

If you turn off Illumination Correction in the menu the effect goes away. To repeat, though, Illumination Correction in the 7D and T4i, on or off, doesn’t cause the effect.

The issue probably doesn’t show up on the APS_C cameras because of the image is about the same size as the circular anomaly in the center of the above image.

Looking for a EF 70-200 IS USM II. Used is fine. Ideas?

I'm dying to get this lens. Any leads/ideas/wisdom on how/where to get one? Good Condition (used) would be okay. I'm shooting on the 5DM3 and I understand this lens SINGS on this body!

I've looked on various rental sites to buy their old rentals, and for the amount of usage those lenses get, they're only knocking off about $100 dollars from a new one. I'd rather just spend the extra $.

Any ideas would be appreciated. THX!

APS-C Compact Camera?

We received a small comment that Canon will finally resurrect the “Pro” moniker for a PowerShot camera soon. The Canon PowerShot Pro1 was a very popular enthusiast compact camera that was launched in 2004.
