Used 7D

Long time reader, however my first time posting here.

I just wanted an opinion regarding a used 7D I was thinking of getting as a second body. The camera is 1.5 years old, has approx. 7200 actuations, comes with all original accessories, box etc. Also included is a brand new battery grip with box etc. At my local camera store I can get a new 7D (gst included) for $1440 and a new grip (gst also included) for $240 so new for the entire package would be about $1700. This person is selling this for $1400. Is it worth $1400 and not have warranty or should I just go for the 7D new for $1440 as the grip is not that important to me (but would be nice to have).

Thanks in advance

7d vs 60d

I currently have a rebel XS. I waited for the 5D mkiii to come out so I could see if it would be affordable. It's not right now so I'm going to hold off for a long while. I'm not going with the 5D mkii because of the AF issues. I can't continue to shoot with my XS because half the time I can't even get it to take a picture and for the money it costs to send it to Canon for repair, I'd rather spend it on a new camera. So for now, I'm choosing between the 60D and 7D. I'm going the CLP route so the 60D is $640 and the 7D is $1087 (plus tax).

Can anyone tell me if I would notice a big difference in IQ between the 60D and 7D? Aside from the additional AF features, dual processors and magnesium body, they seem to be quite similar functionality wise. Is there something significant that I'm missing that would make me regret not spending the additional $$ on the 7D? Thanks!

5DIII Fastest SD Card

Reading the interview with Chuck Westfall I want to know what are the fastest SD cards that the 5DIII supports.

I will be getting a couple 16gb Lexar 600x (90mb/s) CF cards for the camera but am wondering what are the fastest SD cards after seeing that "The EOS 5D Mark III supports Class 10 SDXC and SDHC memory cards, but not the UHS standard."

I prefer Sandisk and Lexar cards.

For example at B&H the have a 16GB SDHC Memory Card Professional Class 10 UHS-I. 600x (90mb/s)

Does that mean I am not going to get full speeds from the SD card as it is UHS-I?

What SD card is the fastest that the 5DIII will support?

What next for the 7D?

With the 5D3 now out in the open I'm starting to wonder if the 7D is next on the list of bodies to get an upgrade.
Trouble is the more I think about it the more I fail to see a direction it could go. There's a few feature they could add but they'd be only slight improvements on the current specs.

1, Better video control
2, Compatibility with the 600EX & ST-E3RT
3, The same AF system as the 1DX and 5D3, or a scaled down version.
4, Improve the metering system.
5, To go FF, perhaps use the 5D2 sensor!!

The thought did cross my mind that the 7D may be killed off and maybe replaced with a new, FF camera that only does stills. Can't really see that, video is here to stay.

What are your thoughts, what cam be done to improve the camera without it stepping into the 5D3 territory?

<strong>High ISO Samples

</strong>Engadget has released a few high ISO examples from the upcoming 5D Mark III. You can view them <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/12/canon-eos-5d-mark-iii-high-iso-sample-images/" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>
<p>The 5D Mark III is in a lot of hands now and we should see a lot of new content and thoughts on the camera relatively soon.</p>
<p>Planet5D has also posted a link to a video a few of us missed. It was shot with the 5D Mark III and you can see it <a href="http://blog.planet5d.com/2012/03/beauty-in-the-eye-of-the-beholder-canon-eos-5d-mark-iii-short-eye-of-the-mind/" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>
<p><strong>March 22, 2012

</strong>This is still the date that first cameras and shipments should be sent to customers. This is still confirmed in the USA and Canada by retailers I have talked to. The big three of <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/847545-REG/Canon_5260B002_EOS_5D_Mark_III.html/BI/2466/KBID/3296" target="_blank">B&H</a>, <a href="http://www.adorama.com/ICA5DM3.html?kbid=64393" target="_blank">Adorama</a> and <a href="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?lt1=_blank&bc1=000000&IS2=1&bg1=FFFFFF&fc1=000000&lc1=0000FF&t=canorumo-20&o=1&p=8&l=as4&m=amazon&f=ifr&ref=ss_til&asins=B007FGYZFI" target="_blank">Amazon</a> are all still taking preorders. There was a lot of confidence from a couple of the retailers that initial preorders would be filled very quickly and that Canon had a lot of initial inventory of the camera.</p>
<p>Most retailers should have stock before the launch date. If Canon does this type of launch going forward for cameras and lenses, everyone is going to be a lot happier.</p>

fd to ef lens adaptor/converter

Need advise on which one to buy that does work ok

there seem to be plenty of them out there most seem to made in China

The reason for the adator is i Found a Canon 7.5mm f5.6 ssc fd fisheye lens i have had stored away for twenty years,i forgot i had it until went looking in some old camera bags today. i thought it might be fun to take some shots with it again, guess the novelty wore off it but i want to give it another go

this lens does not have a focus ring because everything is if focus,it has a aperture ring and a built in filter ring with sky/y3/o/r/cca4/ccb4 colours

The only thing i remember about buying it was it cost me about a months pay and i had saved for weeks to buy it,things you do when you want something you can't live without

Should I move up to FF or get more lens

Probably a ton of other posts like these here already, but I thought I'd ask specifically for my situation.

I currently have the following gear
  • 550d
  • aluminum tripod
  • 10-22mm EF-S
  • 18-55mm EF-S
  • 18-200mm EF-S
  • 30mm 1.4L EF
  • 50mm 1.4 EF

I mainly enjoy shooting landscapes, buildings and night photography. I've only been serious shooting for about 6 months. I don't make money of my pictures as this is just a hobby. And moving to FF, in particular the 5dmk3, interests me for low light performance as the biggest issue i have is with my night shots and AF in low light.

What I wanted to ask, would you recommend that i just get the 5dmk3, where I could only use the 35mm and 50mm. I'd be pretty limited by my glass, and after dropping $3500, it'd be a while before i could get more glass. Though eventually i'd like to get the 24-70mm mk2

Or would you recommend I spend more money on gear and glass to make the move to FF lens painful when it happens? That and i could work more on my shooting skills and get more experience.

If i picked up more gear, I'd be looking at
  • ND filter
  • 6xx Flash
  • lightroom
  • possibly a macro lens

Picking up the 5dmk3 would be a stretch financially, but doable, and the gear no sweat.

5DIII Buffer

Does anyone know what the total Buffer capacity will be on the 5DIII? I'm basically a landscape or otherwise 'very slow' action photographer and so wondering if a 5-15MB per second transfer will be sufficient in order to facilitate enjoyable RAW shooting.

Thanks!

<strong>Chuck Westfall Interview

</strong>Canon’s Chuck Westfall interviewed with Arash Hazeghi about the 5D Mark III and what sets it apart from its predecessors. It’s an interesting read, and offers lots of insight into the improvements in sensor design as well as the all new autofocus system.</p>
<p><strong>Mr Westfall breaks down the AF system

</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>CW: The number and distribution of high-precision cross-type AF points has increased on the new 61-point AF system relative to the 45-point AF system used by the EOS-1D Mark IV. Moreover:</p>
<p>· The overall AF system speed of the EOS-1D X including lens drive is superior to that of the EOS-1D Mark IV on a lens for lens basis. The overall AF detection speed of the EOS 5D Mark III is superior to the AF detection speed of the EOS-1D Mark IV.</p>
<p>· The level of AF precision for 5 of the central area AF points on the 61-point sensor (i.e., the dual X-shaped cross-type points) is superior to the level of precision for any of the AF points on the 1D Mark IV.</p>
<p>· 21 cross-type AF points in the central area of the 61-point sensor are functional with maximum apertures as small as f/5.6; None (zero) of the cross-type points on the EOS-1D Mark IV are functional as cross-type sensors at maximum apertures smaller than f/4.</p>
<p>· The 61-point AF sensor has twice the low light sensitivity as the 1D Mark IV’s 45-point AF sensor (EV -2 vs. EV -1).</p>
<p>· The 61-point AF system supports AI Servo III, which is superior in subject tracking stability and consistency compared to AI Servo II found on the EOS-1D Mark IV.</p>
<p>· The 61-point AF system adds a greater degree of user control for subjects with various characteristics of acceleration and deceleration such as birds in flight.</p>
<p>· The 61-point AF system not only has 16 more AF points than any of the 45-point systems, it is also 20% wider in coverage (19mm vs. 15mm), making it easier for photographers to keep their subjects within the active AF area.</p></blockquote>

Zeiss lens wipes

I was at our local drugstore not long ago and I came across a display of some Zeiss lens wipes, which are pre-moistened little towelettes designed to clean your glasses and, according to the box, your camera lens as well. Does anybody have any experience with these? They work fine on my glasses; they've never been cleaner, in fact. The name "Zeiss" leads me to believe they'd work ok for my camera lenses, but I thought I would poll the unwashed masses just to be sure. Thanks in advance for your input.

D800/E pre-order thread

Yes, I am a Canon fanboy. I shoot with a 7D and all my glass (not much) is Canon:

  • Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II
  • Canon EF 50mm f/1.4
  • Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS
  • Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS

I've been looking forward to shoot FF for a while now, and was just waiting for the 5DMKIII to come out. The bulk of my shooting is large prints of my HDR work (not huge, just 13x19). But bringing my 16-35mm to the MKIII will show its flaws. I am also a filmmaker and uncompressed video is a very tempting feature from the D800.

I am not going to sale all my glass, since I love my Canon glass and bodies last around 6 years or so. But glass could last 20 years or more (if well cared). I follow this forum and read the opinions about both cameras.

I know I can use the Nikkor 14-24 on a Canon body, but being able to autofocus with a Nikon one is definitely a plus. This lens is also arguably the best ultra wide (and also wide?) out there today. I have never used a DSLR by Nikon, and this is a great opportunity to learn. It's a benefit to know how to use the systems of both leaders in the DSLR world.

And this is why I am pre-ordering a D800E and the 14-24. I will give it a shot. I am not actually 'switching', I am just going to FF for the first time with a Nikon body for the reasons mentioned above.

IF you are pre-ordering or if you already did, it will be very interesting for me to know why you made that choice.

I appreciate the input in advance... ;)

Thanks guys!!

Ben

Lens Issue: 10-22 vs 16-35 vs 17-40

So I currently have a 40D and just decided to make the jump into FF and preorder the 5D mark III! I'm pretty sure that I want to keep the 40D as a backup (not 100% though) and to get some more reach out of my 70-200, but I'm torn about what to do with my UW zoom if I do end up keeping the 40D. I love my 10-22 and have never really had any issues with it, so what would yall recommend: keeping the 10-22 or selling it and purchasing either of the FF UW lenses? Would there be significant visual improvement from moving from crop UW to FF UW?

Amazon Bestsellers and 5D3

Saw over on Nikon Rumors that the d800 is 10th on Amazon's Bestsellers list. At the time of the post, they claimed the 5D3 was 83rd. But now - I don't even see it in the top 100...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/electronics/?ie=UTF8&tag=nikorumo-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957#1

It's also #1 in the separate dSLR category :: http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/photo/?ie=UTF8&tag=nikorumo-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957#1

wtf? :'(

7d+17-55 and 5d+70-200: does-it make any sense ?

Hi,

I have a 7d with several lenses including a 17-55mm 2.8 and a 70-200mm 2.8 II.
I pre-ordered the 5d3 but I will keep my 7d as a back-up.

I was thinking of having the FF with a standard zoom (24-70mm or 24-105mm) along with the crop 7d with the telephoto 70-200 for the extra reach.

With the "high" price of the 5D3, I ordered the body only instead of the kit.

Does-it make any sense to keep the 17-55mm on my 7d and put the 70-200 on the 5D3 ?
Or should I just wait and order the 5D3+24-105 kit when I can afford it?

EDIT: a third option would be to go with the 5D3 body only now and start saving for the 24-70mm 2.8 II

Am I crazy to even think of switching to Nikon? Here's my gear...

My wife and I started up a photography business last year. I'm currently in the process of getting her a camera body. We primarily shoot family portraiture and are moving into weddings this summer. I currently have:

Canon 5d Mk2
Canon 35L 1.4
Canon 50L 1.2
Sigma 85mm 1.4
Canon 135L f/2
Canon 580ex II

I do have the mark 3 preordered but damn the D800 is tempted... I could sell everything and start from scratch... I would lose some money yes, but does Nikon have equivalent primes as Canon does?

5d Mark 3 Mirror blackout time

I personally am not bothered by it, but I remember a few days ago people wanted to know about the mirror blackout time for the new 5d Mark 3. I dont know if anyone ever found it out, but I came across

http://www.arihazeghiphotography.com/AH_CW_interview/

in their interview with Chuck Westfall, he discloses "Shutter lag time is 59 milliseconds, the same as the EOS 7D, and considerably faster than the EOS 5D Mark II’s 73 milliseconds. Viewfinder blackout time is 112 milliseconds on the EOS 5D Mark III vs. 145 milliseconds on the EOS 5D Mark II."

Hope this helps for those who are interested.
