Which Lens?

So I just purchased the 16-35 II and to be completely honest, I was kind of disappointed to learn 16mm isn't as significant a difference from 24mm as I had hoped. As a result, I have been contemplating whether or not I should return it for the 14mm II or keep it and add the 8-15 fisheye. The only downside I see to the 8-15 is that it is only f/4 whereas the 14 is 2.8. Any thoughts/advice? Mind you, in addition to the 16-35 I currently have the Tamron 24-70 and Canon 70-200 IS II, therefore an 8-15 range would fit nicely into my current setup.

Also, I know it's still too early to make an informed decision (as there has really only been one review on the Canon 24-70 II), but could one actually benefit by "upgrading" the Tamron 24-70 with VC to either Canon's version I or II? It would be used in conjunction with my 5D Mark II.

Thanks,
Brandon

Zeiss 135m f/2.0 Apo-Sonnar Announced

from TDP.

I'm surprised there's not more talk about this one yet, seeing as how everyone loves their 135/2L (at least, those who can afford one).
T* coating, huge Zeissy focussing ring, looks like it's built like a tank (aren't they all?), €1600 or US$2000, Nikon and Canon Mounts only (i think they've stopped with the Pentax K, and Sony already have a 135/1.8 from Zeiss), 80cm mfd, 0.25x macro.

I know AF and IS get more and more usful the longer a lens gets, but i've shot birds handheld with an MF 300/4.0 lately, this one should be great in the right light.

Any Nikon D3x to Canon 5D MKiii converts?

Dear Canon Rumors Forum Members:

Are there any former Nikon D3x owners that have jumped ship to the Canon 5D MKiii? If so, I would appreciate your opinion on the dynamic range and banding issues.

I have owned two Nikon D3x cameras. The first, I shot for a couple of years before dust started to build up behind the low pass filter and onto the image sensor. A third party company replaced the low pass filter, but returned the camera in unusable shape.

My second D3x (the replacement) operated fine for the next six months, but it started to build up dust, shutter oil, etc---and I sold it.

I was hoping to transition to the D800, but the quality control reports have been astonishing. The 5D MKiii seems to be arriving in great shape out of the box. But it would seem that I am going to loose a couple of stops of dynamic range off the bottom, and there is the Canon signature banding issues that never seem to be resolved from model to model (?).

My work is in landscape photography, and I do not use (nor like) HDR---so digging shadows out is part of the normal work flow.

DxO really marked down the image sensor in the 5D MKiii, but I have seen other professional tests that indicated performance much more on par with the D3x.

Again, looking for some one that has photographed extensively with a D3x that might have made the transition.

Gratefully,

Pete

1dmk4 vs 5d3

So, after lots of thought regarding a second body/backup body (my 7d, I just don't trust it anymore after using the mk3 for a few months), I'm kind of feeling like I have 4 options:

buy a second mk3 (would have to wait a bit to do that)
buy a used 1dmk4 (seeing used prices of $4000-4400, so, like mk3 would have to wait a bit)
see what this entry FF is like/can do
see what the 7d2 may bring to the table

All of these options require waiting (I have considered a 5dmk2, but I kind of want something that can hold it's own up to ISO 6400 and not look like a joke compared to what the mk3 can do. Maybe if used prices go down...).

with the way the market is though, these new canon models probably won't be available for a while (possibly the entry FF, only because they may want that on the market for Christmas season, but I don't see the 7d2 being available till sometime in 2013)...

So yeah, this has me pondering things like...a 1dmk4? The only experience I have with 1 series bodies isn't even shooting with one. I recently shot a wedding and had a second shooter with me, he was using a 7d and a 1ds3 ---and wow, as I was going through his files, I could immediately know which came from the 7d and which came from the 1ds3---at ISO 1000 the 1ds3 file was a joy to work with, colors brighter and sharper, almost better than the mk3. I'd kind of love to rent one cause I am sure that would be fun to shoot art and portraits with, but the 1ds3 definitely isn't a low light monster, so while it would be fun, its not what I need. It is an eye opener though, and knowing that the 1dmk4 used is basically the cost of an mk3 with grip...yeah, that has me thinking...

So I am wondering from all ya'll that have used both camera's, how does the 1dmk4 hold up against the 5d3? How is the 1dmk4 at higher ISO's? It's a 1.3 crop, so that is kind of interesting and unique. My guess it would be a true 2nd body as opposed to merely a backup body (IE, I'm going to try running with both camera's this saturday, but, in a pinch, will I opt to switch lenses and not risk using the 7d or will I go for the 7d? I would have less hesitation if I had an mk2 as backup. And I'm guessing that with a 1dmk4 there'd be zero hesitation, and I'd go to that without fail (I have read that it's just an amazing camera!)

So from you, the people who use it, how is the 1dmk4?

And from those who own both, how do they compare?

Is there a way to confirm focus in Live View

First, let me say thanks for all the great knowledge and information I've learned through this forum. I'd say I'm a bit addicted as it keeps me from my work. ::)

My question:

Is there a way to get focus confirmation in LIVE VIEW x 10 like we see when using the view finder with our MF lenses? Depending upon the amount of light I'm shooting landscapes in, sometimes its very difficult to see the LCD and know for sure I'm perfectly dialed in.

I've used external monitors on previous shoots but sometimes the whole set up is cumbersome and the monitor resolution was not as good as the LCD itself.

Thanks in advance.

400, 200 or...?

Hi. I have got the option on a couple of lens, just don't know which one to attack first.

(I already have a 70-200 usm II 2.8 and other lens for the purposes of background). Moving up to a 5d3 from a 600d so selling the ef-s lens in due course.

Lens I have option on (all used, prices are pre haggle, incl. estimation of freight and customs fees)

Canon f2.0 IS 200mm, price about 5k USD
Canon EF400 IS USM I f2.8 (not the latest sadly), price about 6k USD
Canon EF500 IS USM I f4 prob about 7.5k.

Now the latter is probably going to push the bank a bit.

I will be shooting a bit more indoor stuff and had thought the extra 1 stop would be worth it at 200. But the 400mm would also be good for shooting some outdoor sport stuff as well. It is a 50:50 call really (unless the good lady agrees and I can sell the other lens).

I also have the Sigma 150-500 f5.6 to whatever thingy. That might get 5-600 bucks.

My main though was towards the 400mm, allowing at worst case (!) use of a 1.4 or 2 to get up to 800 / f5.6.

Dilemma dilemma...

I appreciate both are "older" lens but not so old as to be a problem for support (?). Both conditions are relatively good and main thing is optics are good/they've been serviced/no mushrooms growing etc. I know the 400mm is a tad heavier but I can't justify 11k for the new sexy one either.

I need to decide within the next day or so and hope no one has jumped the gun on me.

Assume that the shooting mix is the same at 200 and 400 to make things "level". Is it better to lose one stop at 200mm and gain it at 400mm as I am thinking? The older 2 stop IS (?) on the 400 is not a problem per se (unless someone gives me the new one for the same price, dream) as it will be on a Wimberley head in any case).

So,, care to help a man come closer to some form of sense ?

Thanks.

p.s. had thought in my dreams about the 200-400 that one day might see the light of day. I think on my budget I can rule that out :)

430EX II AF assist for 1D X/5DIII

Finally got around to testing the AF assist lamp coverage of the 430EX II with the 61-pt AF system of the 1D X (and 5DIII). With a focal length of wider than 35mm, the outermost columns (which are f/5.6-sensitive lines) are outside of the coverage area. At 35mm and longer focal lengths, the 430EX II's assist lamp covers all 61 points.

The 600EX-RT provides full coverage, of course.

PowerShot

S100 Replacement with Wifi

G12 Replacement that isn’t much different than the current one. Same sensor size as the G12.

A new SX big zoom PowerShot is coming.

EOS

A full frame EOS between the 7D and 5D Mark III with touchscreen and 20mp (most mentions have been 22mp)

CRs Take

I’m not 100% sure about a new EOS camera, though there are press events all over the planet next week. Announcing EOS with Pixma and PowerShot has happened before, and Canon could use a splash at Photokina if Nikon does indeed announce their inexpensive fullframe D600.

Stock levels of the 5D Mark II seem to be depleting in various places around the globe as well.

The First Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L II Review

From ThatNikonGuy

ThatNikonGuy has completed what appears to be the first review of the new Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L II lens. It’s a pretty good review as he puts them both through the paces. Lots of sharpness, bokeh and autofocus tests were completed at various focal lengths in the review.

He did notice the lenses differ in focal length at 70mm, this is pretty normal. For example, the EF 70-200 f/4L IS is not as wide at 70mm as the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II, it’s more like 85mm in examples I have seen.

His biggest point at the end of the review is how good do you want your 24-70 to be? For an extra $1000 (compared to buying a used 24-70 version 1), is it worth getting the version 2 when version 1 is so great? I can’t help with that yet, as I have not seen one land in Canada yet. It is good to know that when you have to make this decision, there really is no wrong choice.

Version 2 looks to be a little bit better at everything, autofocus, bokeh, sharpness, a more pleasing warmer image, lighter weight. The big downside is you’ll have to go buy 82mm filters, hopefully you have some already.

Canon 70-200 f2.8L (non-IS) vs Canon 70-200 f4L IS

Currently using the Canon 60D, and maybe down the road (maybe a year or two) will go for a full frame body. I am sure many of you faced the same dilemma. While I'd love the f2.8L IS I or II of this lens, the budget is keeping me from going for it. :'(

Was scouring the flickr pages, forums for photos taken with the f2.8L (non-IS) and f4L IS. Since I have no experience with this lens (considering its weight and size) I was wondering how difficult it is to keep the f2.8L (non-IS) steady while framing your shot. I am asking this because a friend of mine bought the f2.8L (non-IS) but returned it because it was difficult (at least for him) to get a good shot and freeze his subject (unless with high shutter speed). I know this various from person to person, as some of us may have steady hands than others. Any experiences shared here would be really helpful.

Also, I was wondering given the f4L lens with it's biggest aperture of f4; how is it's bokey quality in comparison to the bokeh rendered by the f2.8L at f2.8.

I am guessing the f4L IS is sharper. Correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks.

Advice: If you had a month to learn anything about photography what would it be?

This is my first post on this forum but I've been a fan and observer for some time. I decided to get into photography late last year as a way to help me "smell the roses" and take a break from work and escape a little. I've loved every minute of it, however I was in an unfortunate accident over Memorial Day weekend and spent the last 3 months in the hospital. I have learned a ton from all of you, and have about one month to go before I return to work. I've learned Lightroom pretty well, I have a 5DIII and feel that I have a comfortable knowledge of getting around it and look forward to getting out and about and taking photos again and growing and learning as a photographer. Since I have a lot of respect for this group I'd love to tap into all of your experience and ask the question of "if you had a month where you could dedicate hours a day to learning and becoming a better photographer, but had limited mobility and likely couldn't spend a lot of time 'behind the lens', what would you learn and how?" I'd love to get to a point where I could put some very large prints on my walls that I was proud of and that I will continue to find interesting. I'm open to learn anything and I appreciate any advice or input that anyone may have. My Flickr account is pmcpmcpmc in case anyone wants to see what I've been up to until now; I'd love any feedback or suggestions. Thank you in advance

Help?

I find myself looking for a little inspiration and want to change my gear up a bit. I currently have a 60D (Gripped) with 18-200 kit lens and a Nifty Fifty. Let me say I love this camera and it always meets my needs! I do not use my photographs as a means of income, just a hobby and way to document life around me for myself and for my future generations. I did not get my 50mm initially when I bought my camera but when I got it in the mail from B+H I felt inspired and began really getting more in depth with my hobby. If I could I would (and I am trying to this day) ditch my 18-200 and stock up on a couple in expensive primes. Don't get me wrong I like the 18-200 for its versatility but find it un-mounted most of the time.
I want to sell my camera to fund either purchasing a 5D II or Classic. My first choice is the Mark II, I do enjoy video capabilities once and a while, and like making large prints for around the house so the higher MP count would be a bonus. But there are no takers in my area for my gear and would be more likely to raise enough for a Classic. My question is this:
Can the 5D Classic still perform well enough for an enthusiast like myself, or will I kick myself for not holding out for an unknown amount of time and getting the mark II?
If you could provide Sample photos from a Classic show casing it I would be greatly appreciative!

Need advices, white line across photos...5D3

I bought my 5d3 brand new, never brought it in for service but thinking about it... before i do,
can i get your advices to why my photos turned out the way it did?

I notice the white line across my photo on the left side going vertically, happens on all
photos on the same spot. btw, the sensor never been cleaned before.

white line appears:
- with my other lens also
- regardless of shutter speed fast or long.
- more noticable when i darken the image (adding contrast, b&w etc..)
- more noticeable when bracketed photos merged into hdr as one photo
- with and without clear mrc filter

I have provided some samples for you to diagnose the problems. each samples with "normal" photo and
with "darken" intentionally for this purpose so you can the line more clearly as to what i am trying to explain. On "normal" photo, white line still appear but less noticeably.

if solutions can be fixed without having to bring it in for service, that would be greatly appreciated.
just don't like to wait or the fear of more problems could persist after bringing in for service due to dissembled/reassembled of parts.

Brian

Canon 5D Mark II vs Nikon D600

Nikon is making there move soon with the d600 and Canon certainly won't be making their small FF dslr anytime soon.

Info. about the d600.

Very small and lightweight body
16 bit image processing
Expeed 3 processor ---- Idk what this would translate to with canon, i would guess double digic 4.
Maximum video recording: 30 minutes -------------- WOW!!
Built-in mic
19 scene modes
Magnesium alloy only on top and back only ----- makes it lighter I guess...
Maximum shutter speed of 1/4000 ------------ Seriously?
Shutter life: 150,000 cycles (the D800 is rated for 200,000 cycles)

24.7MP full frame sensor
Weight: 760g (850g with battery and memory cards),
3.2" LCD with 921K dot with ambient sensor control
HDMI output
Video compression: H264/MPEG-4
Full HD with 30p, 25p, 24p, HD with 60p, 50p, 30p, 25p ------ 60 fps thank god.
Viewfinder coverage: 100%
The Nikon D600 will have built-in AF motor
The body most probably will be weather sealed
The D600 will not have built-in GPS
ISO range: 100-6400 (with Lo-1 ISO 50 and Hi-2 ISO 25,600) --- Tad bit worse than the 5D
39 AF points (with an option of 11 AF points), 9 cross-type AF points --- LOADS BETTER
AF face detection
Exposure compensation: ±5 EV (same as the D800)

5 fps ( 5D II has 4fps)
2 SD card slots with Eye-fi support
Build-in retouching images functionality
Built-in flash with sync speed of 1/250s
Two user settings: U1 and U2
Fn button
Auto DX crop mode
In-camera RAW editor
Built in time-lapse functionality
Build-in HDR ------- Nice
New external battery grip
Internal AF motor ------- Very nice
The price of the D600 is rumored to be very low - maybe as low as $1500, most likely 1799**

new ziess 55mm, redefining?

http://thedigitalpicture.com/News/Default.aspx?Cat=Zeiss-News

"A must-see attraction is a high-performance, full-format SLR camera lens with manual focus. With a focal length of 55 mm and aperture of f/1.4, this lens is the first model of a new product family designed for demanding users. Thanks to a newly developed optical design, this lens is superior to conventional full-frame lenses, and it achieves with powerful full-frame, full-format cameras an image performance that until now has only been seen with medium-format systems."

real deal of fluff? cost estimates? Am i reading the lens correctly? 82mm filter on a 55mm 1.4?
