1DX new all-time low-light king?

Hard to tell from one test of the sort posted, but wow, the high iso looks impressive. It's shocking, but it might actually beat the 5D3 by a good 2/3 of a stop! I'm not sure if it is even possible to build one that would do better without radically different tech. This may be the best we ever get from any standard design. High ISO appears to be insanely good on it. At worst it ties the 5D3/D800/D4 but I think it almost certainly beats them all, some by a margin not even really thought to be entirely realistic. Some insane high iso!

I really don't see the D4 being able to match this level of performance (and it has 2 less MP), although I guess the difference won't be all that large, maybe a solid 1/3 stop behind? (again with 2 less MP though).

(The sad note, for the 5D3 users, is it seems proof that Canon did in fact reserve all of their new sensor fab for the 1DX only and decided to milk the old process one more time for the 5D3 sensor, figuring they could get away with it since they bumped up the body specs so much (but they also bumped up the price so much so.... hmm. Maybe it was all about insuring 5D3 had largest profit margin for a 5 series). Seeing the D800 sensor's quality I wonder if someone in Canon marketing is not ruing their decision.)
(That said the 5D3 is still one of the very best ever at high ISO, if not quite there. At low iso it's a pretty outdated sensor at this point though, at least if you ever shoot scenes with lots of dynamic range.)

Just got my first DSLR, confused...

My t4i arrived today and I'm already having my mind blown (in a bad way).

I'm using the 40mm 2.8 STM lens, and I was wondering...is it supposed to make a creaking noise when I turn it counter-clockwise?

I'm very new to photography and basically have no idea what I'm doing. I don't want to break anything.

Also, the AF was working but now it isn't. I turned the camera off/switched the AF up and back and nothing.

I know, I know, I'm a huge newbie.

Any help would be very much appreciated. I'm afraid to touch the thing.

Suggestions for a first monopod for a 5D3...?

Hi all,

I've got a tripod coming my way...but I'm thinking I'd like to get a good starter monopod too...both for stills, and maybe even for some video, I have a small concert venue I may be shooting this weekend...small and crowded, no flash...low light and was thinking a nice mono pod might be handy.

Looking for something that will be nice, but not break the bank.

My tripod coming in is a deal I got on a manfrotto:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000V7H8R0/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00

I think this comes with a quick release plate...does the monopod also work with quick release? If so..maybe getting one of the manfrotto ones might make for a good, interchangeable system for me?

But looking for any recommendations....regardless of brand, looking for reasonable noob cost.

Thanks in advance,

cayenne

PHOTTIX Strato II Wireless 5 in 1 Trigger Set for Canon

Yesterday I received the PHOTTIX Strato II Wireless 5 in 1 Trigger Set for Canon but for some reason I can't get the TTL to work. I put the transmitter on my camera's hot shoe and the receiver on the flash. Is there a special setting I need to enable on the 5dM3 camera? There are different modes on the 600ex-rt, not sure which one I should use. When I use ETTL, and I fired a test shot, exposure was too high and bright. I thought when I change the information on my camera through ETTL, it will also change the flash? Can someone give me a hint on how this things work properly. Never try using a remote flash before. The manufacturer manual from Phottix don't have any information on it.

Did Canon criple the 5D Mark III sensor on purpose?

Judging by the 1D X samples, the high ISO performance is outstanding and a true 1 stop improvement over the 5D Mark III. Something that strikes me though is 4 Megapixels can't make that much difference.

Canon opted to put a nice new focus system in the 5D Mark III, but it seems to avoid people not buying the 1D X and pro's opting for a Mark III instead, they limited the ISO performance boost. With a boost there wouldn't be much between them but now the 1D X is more appealing with its ISO quality jump!!

A first review

Martin Bailey, a Tokyo based photographer has posted a pretty extensive review of the Canon EOS-1D X. You can read or listen to his podcast as he talks about his initial impressions of Canon’s new flagship.

From the review

OK, so these are the main points that I’ve come across so far. I can live with the resolution for the frame-rate and high ISO performance trade-off . I was expecting a larger leap forward in the AI Servo tracking performance, but I’m very happy with the accuracy of the AI Servo focusing when it locks on. For my cormorant tests I was working in very high contrast conditions, and with flowing water in the background, which has always been very tricky. Considering this, it performed OK, though I had hoped for a little more.

My 5D mkIII AWB is Warm - Help

I'll start with I have been loving my mkIII. I started on the t2i, then got the 60d as main cam now 5d mkIII i recently shot a band performance that had lots of mixed lighting. I was shooting mkIII with canon 70-200 2.8 non-is and t2i with tokina 11-16 2.8. My partner was shooting my 60D with sigma 70-200 2.8 os. All 3 where on awe and the t2i and 60d nailed the white balance while the mkiii was all too warm. i took the RAWs into Adobe CR7 and set the WB to tungsten and is was perfect. i don't have a problem with shooting different wb presets. but it would be nice to have it perform better on auto. the wb shift was 0:0 so thats not the problem. I've just noticed it's warmth in many places and am not sure what to do about. I would like to be able to shoot awb. especially when moving from place to place.

Is this an issue other people are having? If so do you think it could be fixed in firmware? Should i send it in? Could it be due to light leak (mine is pre-light leak fix and haven't sent it in yet)?

Swap 16-35 f2.8 II for 24 f1.4 II on 5D3

I am considering Swapping my 16-35 f2.8 II for a 24 f1.4 II.

When I had my 40D, the 16-35 was on my camera most of the time. The 24-55 effective focal length suited many situations very well. Since getting the 5D3, I have rarely used it and when I have, it has only occasionally been used wider than 24mm.

The lenses I use most with the 5D3 is my 135 f2 and my 50 f1.2; my 300 f4 has been wonderful for the kids lacrosse.

So, as I am looking to add another prime to my kit, i am curious to hear from those who have used both the 16-35 f2.8 and the 24 f1.4 II can comment on their experience.

70-200mm f2.8 to 70-200mm f2.8 IS II worth it?

I'm just looking at the lenses I own and wondering if upgrading my 70-200mm f2.8 to the IS II version would be worth it. Now I've upgraded to the 5D3 I'm doing more low light work and I'm thinking the IS will be a bonus.

The test shots make the IS II look a little sharper and also it seems to work better with extenders. I just wondered if anybody on here had used both and what their thoughts were.

I think by the time I've sold my old one and bought a new one it'll cost me about £1,000. For that money I could extend my reach and options by getting a 7D or put the money towards a 300mm or 400mm.

Thoughts please?

Should I/Do I need an RF trigger?

So right now I've got 1 flash, Youguno 565EX and a "10ft" cable for off camera purposes althought I only feel safe pulling about 3 ft on it. So I want to take some larger group family shoots this next week so I'll be using a 450D with flash and 50mm 1.8 lens for the shots with 6 or 7 people in them. Prob gonna take the shots on a golf course or desert in Tucson. I'm debating weather on camera will work in this situation or if I need a cheap transmitter to bring the flash closer to possible back light the group? I'm having a hard time finding examples on youtube to see examples on how to setup the shot. Thanks.

ND filters

Hello
I am hoping you can help me out with selecting a ND filter. I want something that would allow me to shoot at wide apertures (up to 1.2) in bright sunlight. However, it would also be nice to have a filter that I could use for long exposure shots.
I understand that a lot of the time, the more you pay for filters, the more you get out of them, however I cant bring myself to pay more that 200-250 dollars. What I was thinking, is to get a "HOYA 77MM PRO1 DIGITAL NDX8 DMC FILTER" filter that would give me 3 stops. I assume this is well enough for using wide apertures... and may be get a second copy of this filter to stack them for long exposure shots.

I would appreciate any advice on this.
Thanks

5D Mark II disappeared on Canon USA refurb store?

I've been following the 5D Mark II refurbished price on the Canon USA store for quite some time. (http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/subCategory_10051_10051_-1_29252) It's usually out of stock, but just now the listing has been completely removed. I don't recall the listing removed in the past? Could this be an indicator that Canon is retiring the 5D Mark II?

G1X notes

So I got a G1X to replace my S100 with a broken screen (which still works however). I'm going to return it however as I'm not impressed.

It's a neat camera in a lot of ways, a real chunky monkey. Really solid and feels good in the hands. I like best that it has a hot shoe and an articulating screen. However for the price it doesn't seem to give pictures much better than my S100. I'm not a pixel peeper, and the larger sensor should surely be doing better, but in real world shooting I'm seeing similar quality in LightRoom. Which either speaks to the quality of the S100, or to the G1X, or to me, don't know. Also I don't like having a lens cap, and to protect the lens I have to get a too expensive adaptor which will pop the lens out even more.

However the camera isn't that much fun. It's almost the same size as the Fuji X100 which I have, and the Fuji takes way better pictures and is a lot more fun to use. The G1X is more versatile (zoom), but it's safe, comfortable, and boring. All for $800. My biggest complaint however is the size, it won't fit in the SnapR bag like the G12 does, it takes the Snap35 bag like the FujiX100. So it's not really a compact camera anymore but a midsize. And if I'm taking a midsize camera, I expect better pictures for it.

upgrade to a 7D?

Hi All,

I had been thinking about upgrading to a 5D mkIII from my 550D but it's a little out of my price range even body only. So I figured I'd look at the 7D as a few of my colleagues have it and love it. I can get it for £870 delivered body only, however just a couple of things from me pushing the "checkout" button on the site.

I do a lot of night time, night time HDR, panoramic photography and just wondered if the 7D would be up to the job for this. I often do long exposures, in a few shots i've done 20-30 minute exposures on a beach at night and while the 550D was good it wasn't quite perfect, so I wouldn't want to upgrade and lose that performance i have currently.

The one area where I know it will help is my sports photography. I shoot most sports, football, rugby, golf, motor racing, aqua sports (kite surfing, jet skiing, motor boat races)..So I'm 100% it will fulfill it's purpose on that front.

Was just wondering about the low light. These are my 3 main lenses...

Sigma 10-20mm f3.5
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0 L
Canon EF 70-200mm F/4.0 L IS

Anyone using a 7D who maybe can advise?

Canon 5D3 Settings Questions..

Hello, I just received my 5D3 last week and i'm super excited about it however, had a few questions since this is a significant upgrade coming from a 40D.

AF Drive: What AF Drive setting would you recommend for shooting kids (mostly indoors). Right now i haven't ventured out of the One Shot but was wondering if AI Focus will serve better?

AF Area: What do you typically use for AF area for day to day shooting? Is using the 61-point Automatic selection recommended? As it tends to focus on the nearest subject.

Usable AF Points: So i'm having a bit of hard time understanding this concept. If i typically use the 24-105 f/4 Kit lens according to the manual belongs in Group C. How does this limit me in using the Autofocus?

AEB/HDR/Multiple Exposures: In what scenarios you want to use these? On my 40D i would typically use AEB to take 3-5 shots and then use an external editor to combine the images to create an HDR. And now the 5D3 combines the images for an HDR image within the camera.

So what are some good scenarios you want to use AEB?
What is the use for Multiple Exposures and when would you want to use it?

I apologize if these are beginner questions, but I want to learn the full capabilities of the camera so that I can become a better photographer. Thank you for your help.
