No DXO results on 1DX until at least September...?

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/News/DxOMark-news/Keep-your-camera-shutters-clicking

Or at least that's how I interpret "DxOMark will return in September".

So how are we to be told which camera to buy until then? I can't make a decision myself! I need laboratory tests, not real world reviews! If I don't know which camera can give me that extra 100 usable high-iso, or which one can give me 0.2 bits more of DR, how am I meant to be a real photographer???

Help my speedlite fires but my shutter speed is too low

I have a canon 5d mkiii and I am testing my new 270ex ii for vacation and in tv mode shutter 1/125 iso 400 wb flash eval metering it tries to use 1/3 sec or best I can get is 1/20 at iso 1600. I thought it was my batteries but I recharged them. I put my 430ex ii on and same results. Any suggestions? I should be able to shoot at iso 400 with a speedlite? I even reset all my settings. Very frustrated 2 days from a trip.

Latest Canon lenses have an ultra-precision AF mode but only some bodies take ad

surprised this hasn't been posted here yet but:
http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2012/07/autofocus-reality-part-3a-canon-lenses

Very interesting results!

Any lens older than the 70-200 2.8 IS II did much worse with phase AF consistency than with liveview AF on both bodies, 5D2 and 5D3, no surprise, already well known and expected.

Regardless of lens age they all did much worse with phase precision than contrast focus precision on the 5D2.

But with a 5D3, all of the new lenses, on that body only, focus much more precisely!

The 70-200 2.8 IS II was sort of in between somewhat better but not like with the newest lenses.

They found that the new 24mm 2.8 IS, 28mm 2.8 IS, 300 2.8 IS II and 70-300mm IS L all focused much more precisely when used with the new 5D3 (and likely 1DX) AF system than on the older 5D2 and that the 70-200 2.8 IS II possibly focused somewhat better (although they were not sure in this case). They said those few lenses actually focused almost as precisely with phase AF as with contrast liveview AF. The old 300 2.8 IS did not.

So apparently the new AF system can hook into some secret stuff with the newest lens designs.

I wonder if that means that third party lenses are not likely to be able to match the same AF precision of the new Canon lenses on the 5D3/1DX, at least not for some time, since they won't have the special whatever it is that makes the new Canon lenses focus extra well with the new AF system.

part 3B (http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2012/08/autofocus-reality-part-3b-canon-cameras) has now been added to the part 3A stuff I talked about above.

Basically yeah only the 5D3 and 1DX have the new ultra precision AF unit although the 1D4 isn't that shabby.

7D, as I've long said, has a LOT more in common with the cheaper AF units than the 1 series ones, it's more the xxD just with more points and some more speed added and more options than high quality focusing units and sensor and most updated code

the newest lenses have high precision rotation readers that allow for nice closed loop AF, without both the new high precision readers in lenses and the new high precision detectors (1DX,5D3 and to a lesser extent 1D4) you won't get the ultra precision

i think you also need to use the center point or at least the center column other than very top and bottom points of that.

Nice that I swapped to both 70-300L and 5D3. :D

He will test Nikon next. That will be interesting.

5D3+1DX (and partly 1D4) enable ultra-precision AF with newest Canon lenses

looking for portable background stand for botero 7x5feet background

Hello,

I'm looking for a cheap ( preferable 40-60 euro) portable background stand.
My eye fell on the "http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/62542-REG/Westcott_1103_Background_Stand_for_Illuminator.html which supports backgrounds up to 8 feet - but the problem is that I can't seem to get it here in europe (netherlands/germany).

I found this one "savage LS-C" http://www.cameranu.nl/nl/studio-accessoires/achtergrond-systemen/savage/savage-ls-c8-background-stand-voor-collapsibles/h5084_21604_183854/ but it's for another background and I'm not sure it'll fit ( it's for 1,83 - which would be 17 cm's too short... or maybe it'll just fit?)..
Does someone have this stand + botero background (200cm x 150cm which is +/- 7x5 feet ) and knows if it's usable?

Or are there alternatives I could look at ?

<strong>*UPDATE*

</strong>Most seem to agree the image is a pretty good fake, albiet not a perfect one.<strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>Real or fake?

</strong>An image of a Canon EF 135 f/1.8L IS has shown up on the xitek forum.</p>
<p>For the moment, we have no idea if it’s real or a great Photoshop job. The lettering around the front of the lens looks a little off. However, discuss away!</p>
<p>I will note, there has been a patent for a 135 f/1.8 in the past.</p>

Long Range L Choices

I am thinking about a long L series telephoto. My interest is action sports and birding. I am a value conscious buyer.

Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM
Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM (+teleconv)
Canon EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4X (when it becomes available)
OR Sigma 300-800mm f/5.6 EX DG APO IF HSM (sigmonster)

I am looking for long term use and value in the purchase. I know at least one of the items in the list has not been released yet but apparently there are lot of people previewing it. How does the Sigmonster compare with the Canon L brethren? Considering that its about half the price (well OK not quite half), both from a usage standpoint (speed of focusing, weight, zoom etc) and from IQ. Which one of the Canon is the best choice, Would the 400 F2.8 + 1.4X Converter (not the zoom) be a near match for the 600mm F4? Because if its close, then the 400 F2.8 may be the better choice as it give you the 400mm F2.8 which is a sweet combo for many options, including sports. Whats your opinion? Especially if you'd had any experience with these guys? I plan to use it with a 5DMkIII in the first instance?

1DS 3 losing focus during One Shot lock

Hello All,
and sorry to bother you all with such old problems now you are enjoying all your new latest models :) I have a question, I recently bought a 1DS 3 that I am extremely happy about, apart from a small problem, I noticed that when I am using the centre point AF, and one One Shot, the camera will sometimes, lose the lock of focus even though I am holding the trigger down, so I would focas on something, then recompose and the camera would then focas on the middle of where I have just composed too, even though my trigger had remained the same, this does not happen all the time, its like the camera was telling me that it wasnt happy with where it was focussed and then redid it, but by the time that happened I had moved, I rand Canon repair and they said, are you sure your not in AI Servo and I am sure, they said its £150 to get a full service,
Have any of you ever heard of this problem do you think there is some setting I have that is doing this?
Thanks for your help, once I get this sorted I will be extremely happy

Canon one series shutter life

Hey everyone, I am new to posting on the CR forum, but have been following it awhile now.

This is a question/rant post about my Canon 1ds mark3. I bought the camera in 2008 and it is indeed a great camera, with high resolution, good AF and the like. The problem that I have with it is that the shutter seems to have died on me. And that is after about 20k pics. And that is what pisses me of, Canon states that the shutter on a one series is good for 300k+, but this is less than 10%.

I am from Slovenia, where Canon has a poor presence in terms of service and all, so this will probably cost me around 300EUR(=370USD), as the guarantee period is over. >:(

I guess I am writing this post to vent a bit and to ask if anyone has had similar problems with a one series camera and if you have any ideas what to do(instead of paying the 300eur).

Any ideas EU users?

Thanks
Tomaz

<strong>A new radio ready flash

</strong>A new flash is in the works to replace the Speedlite 430EX II and could come as early as this fall. The new flash will be ready to work with the ST-E3-RT transmitter. The current 430 would be discontinued like the 580 was.</p>
<p>No word if we’ll see a flash smaller than the 430 replacement with RT capabilities. I personally don’t think we’ll see the 3xx series updated to RT.</p>

What happenned to CCE camera bags?

Hello all,
Bit of a random question but a number of years ago now I recall there being a company called CCE (Stood for Camere Care Equipment possibly) that made camera bags and cases etc, I can find no mention of them on the net so obviously they went bust or became something else but does anybody recall what happenned to them and when?

Many thanks! :)

Canon 500 availability ?

Hi ,all just wondered if anyone out their in rumours land knows when the new 500 or 600 will be dropping into the shop. I'm a cps gold member and have asked a guy at Canon, the answer is don't know when. Got sick of waiting for the 200-400 so went mad, got drunk to drown my sorrows and hit the deposit button at the local canon dealer for a new 500,oops! Ho hum the wife understands, just wondered if anyone knows? From what I was told its the Olympics that's delaying them hitting the streets for mere mortals like me.

Choice of compact: OM-D em5 vs Sony RX 100

I am stuck between theese two for my wife, I know they are different in size and target different group but having a good FF DSLR spoiled me. now I need to make a choice for a smaller camera.
The RX looks stunningly good. The OMD, with a Pany 25/1.4 and Oly 45/1.8 is better but by how much? Four x price?

Has anyone compared the IQ and usability of these two? Does the RX100 reach to the high end 4/3?

The OMD is very much more a camera but most of it's customisation will be set once and never changed. EVF? Never had one. LiveView with touch focus on 35 fields! Sounds good and easy. The OMD will be closer to the MarkIII. More artistic options.

I am afraid that the Sony will still have the issues with dust on sensor and into the lens (my first and only P&S Casio died by a sand corn). For family photos it is more than enough. But zoom is not necessary. Video either.

I Need advice. Thanks

Portrait Feedback Please!

Hey guys,

I have been following this forum for quite some time and I trust your opinion and advice. I'm new to photography in general and I recently purchased a T4i with the 18-55mm lens. I did some editing in Lightroom 4 and I'd like your feedback on some recent portraits I took.

Thanks in advance!

Speedlite help?

Hey guys,

I currently have a 580exii, and I was originally planning on getting a set of pocket wizards, but then I looked at the new Canon 600EX-RT's... and now I don't know what to do. I want the availability of off-camera flash(es) because I am recently getting into wedding photography (used to be mostly landscape photographer).

In my scenario, would going with the 600's be cheaper/better for the long run?
two 600ex-rt's + transmitter (sell the 580exii)

or pick up another 580exii and some pocketwizards?

Thanks,
Kevin
