40MP Canon that's not the 5D3?

In today's post CR says Canon is planning a high MP DSLR in the 40 MP range that's NOT the 5D3. YESSSSS!!! (if true) That would mean the recent list of rumoured specs might be more less on the money. Just hope they add another stop or two of native ISO (12,800 or 51,200)...and I'll be placing an order.

Possibly having a 40MP Canon DSLR in the works should apease those Canonites who have been uneasy seeing the D800 with it's 36MP and not hearing any word about any high MP Canon in the horizon.

Now we wait for the end of this month. Will Canon announce the 5D3? Will it include "f/8 AF ability"?

Refurbished 24-70 via Canon UK @ eBay

In the wake of the 24-70 II announcement, at least a few of us are thinking of buying the original 24-70mm. I just thought I'd give a heads-up to those of you in the UK that there is a newly listed Canon refurbished lens on eBay for £900

Link here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Canon-Lens-EF-24-70-2-8L-USM-Refurbished-/270910416491?pt=UK_Lenses_Filters_Lenses&hash=item3f1384e66b

Personally I ended up buying a second hand copy for £835. The next lowest price for a new copy seems to be £930 from Amazon, but those are grey imports.

Latest Canon disappoints wants me to switch over to Nikon.

I have been extremely disappointed with Canon lately. I have been waiting for the 5DMKIII that never comes. And the 24-70 was updated yesterday without IS and a huge price tag.

Plus, the Nikon D800 was announced yesterday with a very affordable price tag. I doubt the new 5DMKIII will beat the specs of the D800. Nikon also has the better wide angle zooms. Question I ask myself is why am I still with Canon?

And dont smite me on this, Im a canon fan. Just that I think Canon is out of touch with the present reality.

<strong>Lenses</strong>

I’ve heard that Canon will be introducing a lot of new lenses this year. Quite possibly a record amount of new lenses announced in a single calendar year. For the moment, it’s unknown whether the lens count will include any mirrorless camera lenses, or if we’re talking EF lenses.</p>
<p>I will say, Canon may be updating lenses to help resolve a coming huge megapixel camera. We’ve heard previously a lot of short focal length lenses are <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2011/10/a-loose-roadmap-cr1/">on the update schedule</a>, and we just saw 2 primes and a zoom announced.</p>
<p>Keep watching patents for clues. The <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2012/01/patents-24mm-f2-8-50mm-f1-2-300mm-f4/">EF 24 f/2.8 seemed like an odd duck</a>, yet here it is. I almost expect an EF 50 f/1.2L II, no IS on that one though.</p>
<p><strong>Camera Bodies

</strong>Lots of speculation about the end of the month for a new camera body. However, there is nothing concrete and I’ve been told that things are going “back and forth” in regards to an announcement.</p>
<p>I will say I have heard there will be a very high megapixel camera some time in 2012, possibly in the 40mp range and it won’t be the “5D Mark III”.</p>
<p>The next announcement should be for an EOS body or two.</p>

From NL via 1001noisycameras: 28 Feb announcement rumor 5Dx @ $ 2700 ?

On 1001 noisy cameras we read what has been around for quite a while. But if NL put it again, maybe there is something to it... CRguy: Any news? 8)

February 07, 2012

Rumors: Canon 5D Mark X coming February 28 for $2700

A new testable rumor at Kuaddro.com suggests that the Canon 5D Mark X will be announced around February 28 with a price of $2700. The rumor also rumorizes two lenses, one of which we saw announced last night, the other being a 35/1.4L. [the rumor was written before last night's Canon announcements] (via Foto Actualidad).

With the Nikon D800/D800E now officially announced, it will be interesting to see whether the 5DX has "accidental leaks" left and right so as to grab some of the headlines and discussions away from the D800.

They are referring to a Kuaddro.com post.
Maybe Kuaddro.com just shares what we've seen already via CR... :-\

New lenses will be priced significantly higher in USA from now on

A friend of mine working at Canon MJ confirmed me that from now on, new lenses will be priced higher in US like 24-70L II since Canon decided to reflect the exchange rate on their RR price in USA.
In the last 10 years, US Dollar has lost about 40% of its value against Yen (1$ was worth 125 yen in 2002 when 24-70L Mark I was released, today 1$ is worth only 75 yen. In Japan, RR price of 24-70L Mark I and Mark II are almost the same) and they have been trying not to reflect the exchange rate on the American prices. However, their loss from the devalued US dollar was way too much in the last 3 years that they finally decided to reflect the exchange rate on the American prices.

He thinks this new pricing scheme for the American market could raise prices of used lenses in US, maybe even globally. :'(

Childish Behaviour

When Canon started the Megapixel race the only thing you read on forums was:

Why can't Canon do like Nikon.
Less MP and clean high ISO images (like d700/d3s)

Now Canon is doing exactly this ( flagship 1dx) !
Always complain. So many forum topics where people are switching to Nikon ? why ?

I am certain 99% will not need 36mp images.
I would say go outside and take some pictures.
All current cameras (Canon and Nikon) will do just fine for most of us. (I would say all of us)

I really hope Canon will not go into MP race.

Specialised cameras or a good all rounder?

The reason for this question is an apparant divergent path being taken by Nikon & Canon.

The new D800 has a massive MP count, but likely will not have great low light performance, the D4 has great low light / high Iso performance but nothing like the MP count. Nikon fans say there are people who want a high MP count, and others who want high Iso as if they are mutually exclusive, and for Nikon users now they are.

The way I see it, if you want both then there's no alternative but to buy two cameras depending on what you're shooting, for some that's not going to be an issue, but I much prefer the way Canon appears to be going with a camera which covers all the bases very well in a single package.

I just wonder what the feeling of others are on this

Sigma 50-150mm F2.8 EX DC APO OS HSM - what happened to this lens

This lens was announced a year ago, but never materialized. The older version is no longer available either. I rented the earlier version (not the oldest one) late last year. It was a great lens. It didn't have stabilization, but the nice, wide aperture allowed me to shoot most things shake free. This was a very nice lens, and from what I could tell had very good IQ. I was eagerly waiting for the updated version, but I think maybe Sigma has killed the project. Maybe too much overlap with the 70-200 f/2.8? This lens was nice and light, small, and built really well. It was really just a nice lens. Too bad. Maybe I can buy this lens from my local rental place.

Battery grip/weather sealing qyestion

I read somewhere that a Canon 7d isn't weather sealed without a Canon battery grip. Is it ONLY a Canon battery grip that is weather sealed or are there off brands with the weather sealing. I don't really think I need the extra battery power, but it might be worth the money to help protect my investment if it's the difference between a working and non working camera. I mostly shoot wildlife btw, and spent the extra money for the weather sealed 70-200 IS ii USM. I also have a hoya 77mm Cir Pul filter for the same reason.

T2i, T3i or wait for an upgraded version?

I am in the marketing for an entry level DSLR camera and liked the Rebel T2i and T3i. I have read a lot about them and that the T3i isn't that huge of an upgrade from the T2i. Is there likely to be an updated version soon? Should I wait or purchase one of those. I am wanting it with video, but have also heard the quality of video isn't worth getting it for that reason. I would just like to shoot videos of my baby without having another electronic.

So now that Nikon has owned up and announced the fabled D800, and we all kept saying that Canon will respond Fire with Fire…

What do you guys think Canon will do now? Match Nikon on features (since they probably need a high MP body anyway now that the 1dx is the high DR body) or will they go their own route (22mp but better AF etc).

Also on Price, since the $3900 non-AA version did not happen, does that mean Canon with a 22mp body will try and keep it in the 2500 range?

Dust, is it myth or fact?

I know there has been much discussion about push-pull zooms and dust. But, this was a new one to me;

Internal zoom means no barrel extension to get dust in the lens.

This got me thinking (and I'm not trying to start a new "war' here) how much of the "dust in the lens" debate is fact and how much is fiction? I guess I've always assumed that most lenses are pretty much sealed environments. You need to protect the rear element with a cap and the front with either a filter or a cap or both (although the front elements seem pretty well sealed to me.)

But, as for dust getting inside a lens either from focusing or zooming, is that really likely? Sure, no system is going to be perfect and dust is pretty persistent, but are lenses really designed in ways that can allow dust to get in like this, or are we just repeating urban legends?

Aside from anecdotal evidence (I own the XYZ lens and it is a dust magnet or I own XYZ and I've never gotten a speck of dust in it) can anyone shed some light on this?

D800 - Quality of video output

Does anyone have thoughts on the shown quality of video from the D800, having looked at JoyRide Joy Ride , and the Behind the Scenes video Joy Ride - Behind the Scenes ?
Through the lens - Nikon D800 D-Movies - Through The Lens
(It makes more sense about 4 minutes in)

Headphone jack
Microphone sensitivity adustment
Ability to view live recording on the camera monitor and an external monitor simultaneously
Link movie live view mode to a HDMI monitor and record simultaneously via the HDMI link
Use FX or DX based movie format to record 1080p
Ability to shoot a time lapse via photos and have it save as a video file

Scott Kelby's take - http://scottkelby.com/2012/jumping-the-gun-on-the-d800/ It's not appaearing to be designed for sports or action photographers, is a break from the D700, and seems more for "commercial photographers, and wedding and landscape shooters that want to be using a camera with Medium-Format type resolution without the medium-format price"
