Canon: Possibility of a Retro Camera

I loved the original F-1 for its durability and selection of focusing screens, viewfinders, and that amazing potato masher motor drive (that would shred the film sprocket holes when it was super cold out). The TTL metering was simple and accurate. The New F-1 had more electronics and would probably be a better candidate for a retro camera. The F-1 is a pro camera, and the A series were all consumer-targeted.

I think if we see anything it'll be a fixed-lens APS-C compact. Hopefully they're finally paying attention to the fact that their own G7X is blowing up on TikTok and the X100 series is still hot.

The entire digicam market is blowing up, everything compact is on back-order. If Canon had launched a new IXUS model instead of the V10 they would probably have made billions.. those things go for above retail now. Just sold one today for $200, new it was priced at $100 7 years ago.

Canon needs to make something compact with a higher megapixel sensor to compete with other brands. They could hit two birds with one stone with a retro style camera if done properly.. add-on grip that doubles up as increased battery capacity for instance. The line-up is kinda lacking because not everybody needs an 8k capable camera and all those bells and whistles that adds bulk. Making it a fixed lens camera would be stupid considering they are now making more compact lenses and already have the criminally underrated 28 2.8 in their lineup which would match perfectly with such a camera for use with street photography for instance.

I think lenses have to be considered, I'm not sure how many "retro" styled lenses they'd want to release, or any at all. I guess they could take a few current lenses and put them in a new housing. That doesn't seem very Canon though.

Maybe one or two kit lenses to complement the styling, with the RF mount allowing compatibility with everything else from RF (and EF). I think it would sell pretty well!

It makes a lot of sense to me. I want it. Thx. Looks and the ease of setting the shutter and exposure compensation without getting into menu has an appeal for me.

Compact with not high megapix. Make it low light friendly.

I film camera would be very welcome, love my 1V. A dream would be a rugged and weather sealed rf mount film camera. Have an evf with ovf simulation and a matching low-res dual pixel sensor. Like with slr the sensor flips away instead of a mirror when the image is taken, then the film is moved forward to the same focal plane. RF mount lenses and modern af would work. What a dream camera that would be.

I'm not sure if your idea is possible, but I would like it a lot!

I set shutter and exposure compensation while looking through the viewfinder (evf) using the dials without going into menu. And you can see what the exposure compensation is doing while you are turning the dials.

This is true or I even use the little black and white display at the top of the R5 I'm not sure which other bodies have it...

I am getting older, so taking my entire camera bag with me on hikes is getting to be a challenge. I would like to see a smaller and lighter RF compatible body from Canon. Could be retro, could be fixed lens, but should be RF mount. If RF mount then let 3rd party manufacturers fill the space of 'small, retro looking lenses with aperture rings' product space over time. I have been considering adding a camera from a 3rd party manufacturer to fill this need (Sony a7CII or A7Cr) but really would prefer not to do that.

Hello Canon, PLEASE give us a smaller and lighter digital full frame option with excellent image quality like my R5!

Besides a lighter body, have you gone to the lighter stm lenses?

Indeed - an electro-mechanical FD adapter would be the Icing on the Cake!

Just my thought but it would be more the cake itself ;-)
I have some former boring standard FD lenses which would like to see that adapter, e.g. the 2.8 28, 1.4 50, 1.8 85, 2.5 135, 3.5 50 Macro which are all Chrome Ring variants. Selling them was never an option: Not enough revenue and the 1.4 50 + 2.5 135 had some personal history in their metal!

The only meaningful difference that was found was that Republicans were more likely to believe in a conspiracy theory than Democrats.

How about a digital QL14. Maybe make it RF mount BUT no autofocus, so give it a 50/1.4 and 35/1.4 the size of Leica lenses that can also be used on the AF bodies.

No autofocus would be interesting twist. The split screen could be replaced with similar size circle with 10x (or so) magnified center spot. NOT movable!
