Two New Lenses, Including an RF 85mm f/1.4L VCM Coming September 9

If the rumored specs are true, the C50 will be a 6K camera from a 7K sensor. And it will shoot 32MP stills but with no mech shutter.

That plus the form factor makes it a FX3 competitor. But I agree not a R5C replacement. R5C is a true photo/video hybrid.

C50 is clearly a video centric camera first with basic photo capabilities. The absence of EVF and mech shutter makes it pretty limiting for stills.
Because the R5c will be discontinued. There will be no demand for it. It's not a difference maker. Its not in high demand by cinematographers or filmmakers. Not even in demand by videogrphers, weddings or events.

Same as those on the C70, which are for the EF-EOS R 0.71X Mount Adapter. This suggests it's a Super 35 sensor.

With no EVF and a Super35 sensor this is not a R5C replacement. It's an alternative.
That is a lock screw mechanism to support heavy cine glass and has nothing to do with the EF adapter. As pointed out C80/C400 use the same mechanism and are full frame.

Why the EOS C50 is the R5C replacement?
A couple of reasons.
1.The R5C 2 project was cancelled or postponed
2. Canon is shifting away from a hybrid C line
3. The C50 will be cinema-focused
4. The entry point to the pro Cinema EOS line is the EOS C50 replacing the hybrid R5C. The R5 Mark II is for hybrids
5. The hybrid R5 Mark II simply does not entice that niche to venture into the Cinema EOS line.
Of the 59 "feature films" premiered at Cannes in 2024, non were shot with Canon according to the IndieWire Camera Chart.
For Canon to break through they must be serious with its entrance EOS Cinema models. Hybrids really just don't do it.

Happy for you but this isn’t about owning the best toy in your estimation. It’s about having options for people that want them.

The C70 doesn’t take photos and the R52 line skipped video can’t match the R5C and I can’t afford to have a camera overheat so the R5C suits me fine.

I can’t imagine it will be discontinued but I guess we’ll find out next week.
Cinema, which is what the "C" badge means. The R5C does not have a full sized HDMI. That's a huge negative when rigging it out. The micro HDMI is fragile requiring extra protection. And needs an adaptor or special cable for connection to an external monitor.
There is no reason for you not to continue to use what is best for YOU. The R5C was too limited for myself. Oh, the C70 does take photos and produce still images. Even RED cinema cameras can produce still images. It just isn't a dedicated still camera. Canon is shifting away from hybrid "C" line. The R5 Mark II is for hybrids. It has a fan. I can't respond to your "toy" comment, because it's an irrelevant and not based in facts. Because something is not designed for your workflow, everyone else uses equipment for "toys"? Leave it at that.

Yes! Finally the 85mm F1.4 L VCM is coming! Now I have to decide whether I'll go for the 50mm or the 85mm. Great choices :) Probably 50mm because I have the 85mm F2 and it works well and only shows weaknesses in low light. If possible, I might swap it at one point.

The VCM line-up seems complete, except for the glaring hole that is the 28mm F1.4. Maybe, just maybe, they'll also be able to add a 100mm F1.4. I don´t believe a 135mm F1.4 would fit the size of the VCM lenses.

The VCM line are Canon's line of budget compact L primes. A 100 or 105mm f1.4 or 135mm 1.4 would not be compact or budget at all but would rather be premium line lenses. Those are serious, serious glass.

Something like a 105/2.5 or 135/3.5 would fit the VCM lineup better. But, it's more likely that Canon just won't release anything in the VCM prime line that is longer than 85mm.

It would be upsetting for the R5C line to be discontinued. It really is the best camera for the kinds of shooters who work in photo one day and video the next, but I do understand how we aren’t as big a market as photo-only or video-only professionals. I also have an R5II but it uses the Photo EOS O/S for video and it is not nearly as intuitive for video shooters. If they do indeed discontinue the R5C, it would be amazing if they offered a firmware update to bring the Cinema EOS O/S to the video mode in the R5II. I’d trade in my R5C’s immediately (yes, the full size HDMI out inspires more confidence).

If the C50 has no IBIS as has been rumored that's going to be a huge fail on Canon's part. Guess it will all be clear soon.
Its been "clear" for quite some time.
Not prefered by filmmakers and cinematographers. There are lenses with IS. And electronic stabilization. Just a normal day. No need to worry about a floating mechanical sensor when IBIS is turned off when mounting the device on a vehicle. No need to worry about swiching the IBIS from ON to OFF period. Simple workflow. Need IBIS there are plenty of "B" devices for that. Leave IBIS for the hybrid still cameras. Keep it off the EOS Cinema cameras.

I keep reading “replacement” for the R5C but don’t think the article author understands what replacement means.

How can a 4K camera (even from a 6K sensor) that may not shoot photos replace a hybrid 8K hybrid camera.

That’s like saying the C80 is a replacement for the R5C. They are very different things.

I shoot 8K immersive 180 footage for Vision Pro with my R5C , can I buy this replacement camera and do the same?

Doesn’t seem like it. So how is it a replacement ?
Yeah, this “replacement” talk is wrong. It’s an C#0 camera so the specs make sense.

Without an EVF or mechanical shutter it’s not a true replacement for the photo side either, but again, expected with the name,

Love it or hate it, the R5C was a unique camera we’ll likely never see a direct replacement for. That said, the two I have still work great and don’t really need to be replaced,
