Good to see there´s still life in this thread.
I have been trying to avoid getting the 300mm f2.8L IS II, but (who am I kidding ..) I failed. So, took it for a spin today. I am not sure I need it (actually I am sure I don´t, but when was that important ...), but if sure is one impressive lens. It is early in the season, but this mute swan was already eager to protect his territory and came up close to show off.
1/500s, f4, ISO160, handheld, no editing applied.

I've rationalized backward and forward regarding a lens that would serve my hiking needs better than 300 2.8 II and it's hard to come up with an alternative (maybe the newer 100-400 II). The 400 DO II would be tempting (assuming a 1DX II for me) but 300 @ 2.8, 420 @4 and [email protected] can be really handy. Now, the 600 is better than 300 X2 but is it enough to consider trading the mobility/flexibility (assuming the funds are not there for all these great lenses of course) - their usage would be different.
300 with 5DSR - wow.
