Canon 7D 11 Focusing issues

Within the last 2 months there was a post on the main page about focusing issue on a 7D 11
The post mentioned that Canon internally had acknowledged there was an issue
I can't find the post and a search hasn't given me what I'm after
Does anybody have the link ?

On another note I used my 7D 11 yesterday for panning at drag races
The results are disastrous
I've been doing this for years
I've panned with my 5D and have no issues
These pics are epic fail
I’m using a Canon 700-200 2.8 , AF, Stabilizer on and set to mode 1
Most pics are shot on manual at 1/100, f11 and iso at 100
Camera is set to A1 Servo, high speed continuous
I do not use back button focus
Tracking is set to case 4 for subjects that accelerate or decelerate quickly
I have 3 hrs. of sitting high in the grandstands with pics that are not sharp
At trackside the pics are ok
Anybody else have these type of issues or any ideas whats wrong?
Thanks

Are you aware that Mode 1 is for general stabilization and Mode 2 is for panning? When panning in Mode 1, the IS system is trying to compensate for your panning motion...

If the lens is supposed to be at mode 2 then it is totally my fault ie operator error.
The lens must have been on mode 2 and somehow accidentally got switched to mode 1 and I thought thats where it was supposed to be
Thanks for the quick reply

I hope that fixes it, IS helps you compose the shot, but it can work against you with a moving subject. Mode 1 is definitely the wrong mode to use for panning, but I'm surprised that it would cause a huge issue. I've used IS lenses while tracking moving subjects, the lenses did not have a panning mode, but there was no issue.

Some of the newer lenses detect panning and adjust their settings accordingly. The new 100-400mmL has mode 3 that autodetects panning. It also has mode 2 to force the panning feature.

Canon's newest IS mode, previously provided only on super telephoto lenses, is the designed-for-tracking-action Mode 3 IS. In Mode 3, image stabilization is active and ready for use the moment the shutter releases, but actual stabilization is not in effect until that precise time. The view seen through the viewfinder is not stabilized, and you are able to follow your erratically-moving subjects without fighting against image stabilization designed to prevent you from doing the same. IS Mode 3 is designed to detect panning motion and, when detected, will only apply stabilization at right angles to the direction of the detected movement (like IS Mode 2).

I've done a fair bit of panning with a 7DII.
I thought it handled it pretty good.
I've done some sport, horse racing and cycling.
Its getting the shutter speed and my smooth rotation right is usually my issue.
Don't give up on it yet.
I'll be interested to see if your results improve with the advice on the setting to use on the lens.

Hope it links to this.

This was what CR said but after Canon released the FW update there was no mention of any general focus issues.
Only this.

1. Fixes a phenomenon in which the camera's AF function may not operate properly at a focal length of approximately 100mm when used with the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens.

I always pan with IS on (last 10 years) and on occasions have forgotten to switch to Mode 2 and was able to get good shots. It may not be great but should not be a disaster. Were they approaching you? Maybe case 3 but it you were on the side case 1 would have been more than enough.

I'm experienced and was not getting good results on multiple outings so I sent mine to Canon. Got out the other day and for fun shot BIF in Case 1, 2, 5 and 6 with single, expanded and 51 point zone (in all listed cases) and it was like shooting fish in a barrel an all the cases. Not be dragster but they go by very quickly when they coast.

100-400 MKII with TC 1.4III on and off. First shot with TC on.

100 Shutter ?
1000 would be a better start for anything that moves.

That all depends the subject and on the intent, to freeze motion or to give the sense of speed. For the OP, 1/100 s is just about right.

I sent my 7D2 into Canon back in May. They sent it back in early June and I have been quite happy with it since.
I hope you have the same results as I've had since getting it back.
When I talked to the customer service rep at Tamron around the same time, he told me that their 7D2 had a severe back focusing problem and to tell Canon to zero out the focus. He said that after they got theirs back from repair, everything was fine.
I used mine at NASCAR practice in Daytona yesterday and am very happy with the results.
