All in all a useless article. I'm not sure there has ever been a more boring test, ever. At least choose a test scene with some color and more gradation.

Basically spend double the money on an F3 with external recorder and you get a better camera

Personally i liked the look of the C300 better than the F3. Cant wait to get to have a play around with one eventually.

The onboard recorder (XDCAM CODEC) uses Variable Bit Rate so it will change depending on the content.
In HQ mode the maximum bit rate it can record is 35 Mb/s.

However the real idea with the F3 is to record with an external recorder.
It has dual link HDSDI out.
So the bit rate depends on the recorder.
For example with the Convergent Design Gemini you can record uncompressed, so the bit rate would be in the region of 130 MB/s (Bytes not bits).

130MBs. Surely you must mean 130Mbs. Even if the recorder can handle 130MBs, there is no way that camera can output that much, is there?

I'm thinking uncompressed 4:4:4 vs 4:2:2 means 4x35Mbs=140Mbs max.

No, I do mean Bytes per second.

Uncompressed 10-Bit 4:4:4 video (which is RGB) is probably a lot more data that you are used to if you are used to compressed formats, if you know what I mean.

AJA have some nice calculators for this sort of thing also.

The camera is just spewing out the video through dual link HDSDI (which from memory is 3G too on the F3).
So it's probably easier for the camera to do this data rate than to compress and record it on the fly.

Here's how i calculate 10 bit uncompressed @ 24p. I could totally be wrong, someone please correct me if I am.

1080*1920*24p*(10bit)=(447Mbs)

8 bits per byte so.

(447/8)=49MBs

Either way, it's a beast.
