Canon to speak at IEDM about new sensor development

Canon R1 is now required to have either 1) an extremely fast scanning readout speed (4-5ms) or 2) global shutter like Sony A9III.

I would love to see newer Canon sensor tech in the Canon R5 Mark 2 and R1. The R5 sensor is quite good for a FSI, non stacked sensor but it would be nice to see higher DR and shadow noise recovery compared to Sony and Nikon. Especially in video.

Sony has a clear advantage as their sensor technology development is subsidized in part by their competitors buying their sensors (Nikon, Fujifilm, Panasonic, OM Systems, etc...) Canon is the only one of the Japanese camera brands that still makes its own sensor technology (for the most part).

However, the Japanese imaging industry is a strange beast and many times they work together to dominate the global market as a whole instead of competing purely against each other. A lot of technology licensing / sharing goes on behind the scenes.
