Is that something you couldn't do in Lightroom 3 years ago?

Dunno. I refuse to bow to their subscription service.

I switched over to DxO when Lightroom and Photoshop went to their BS subscription model. I haven't regretted it at all.

To replace Photoshop I bought Affinity Photo (which is available for $25 during their COVID Stay Home - Stay Safe sale) and it's worth every penny. There are a couple of things that Photoshop does better but Affinity is a very competitive replacement when you consider the price.

One of the most important reasons I gave up on Nik was its tendency to produce strong halos and other artifacts. While I understand some people became quite adept at the "control points," they seemed awkward and tedious compared to masks and brush strokes. When I was a beginner at post-processing, the SilverEfex presets seemed awesome. That was years ago.

I like plug-ins! I really do. With the power combo of LR and PS, I also use Alienskin/Exposure, On1, and Portraiture. This set of tools covers things well. But I do know quite a few older photographers who still praise and use Nik.

I like how DxO defines themselves as " one of the most innovative companies in the photography and image-editing industry"....

When you consider that they are one of the only quality RAW developing tools that is as good as Lightroom (or better depending on your taste) that doesn't gouge you with their monthly/annual subscription model, they are.

I'd speak in praise of Nik software. Control points are far more intuitive than masking and brush strokes . Photoshop is capable of making more sophisticated changes but its a very difficult tool for beginners whereas Nik is easily learned. It has some very good presets heavily used by alot of competition photographers. I've almost every plugin under the sun and I'd consider Nik the best of them. I think its good to see them creating a new version. Photoshop has a monopoly but because its so difficult for alot of users to work with it allows for clever plugins. They died off a bit but there has been some very nice ones emerging recently again.

I‘m only half impressed with the update. Going back to your edits via tiff is great, I love it. But... the protocol is lost and saving is even slower than before.
The Photoshop plugin is unsable small on a MacBook Pro 15“ using its max screen resolution - WTF? Quickly using presets directly from this plugin is a great idea but also a little bit messy implemented: the preset names are truncated and no previews are available next to the names (I understand this would not be easy to implement without compromising the overall speed of Photshop while rendering previews I guess).

I wouldn't find the halos in Silver Efex a big issue. It just depends on the degree you are using the structure slide. I'm not sure if it was worse in the original version or whether I was more radical then. Halos in version 2 is not something that I notice unless I'm going for lots of structure. I bought this upgrade and to be honest its a bit disappointing and misleading. Really the upgrade is only the Perspective Efex. At least at the moment most of the others seem to be the same version. I can't see any difference in the tool itself. Maybe its subtle but its not noticeable. If you are upgrading its probably not worth it. It has a new interface within Photoshop but its not particularly amazing more of a pop up. If you try to upgrade but go back a better discount appears of 30% but disappears and is hard to repeat. That sort of discounting annoys me eg offering a 25% discount but you could have had a 30% discount.

When did Capture One go to a subscription model? For that matter, when did the standalone ON1 suite go to a subscription model? If you don't want the updates you can keep using the old version until you get a camera too new for them to handle the files. Even then, you can convert to DNG if you don't mind doing that.

I would even say DXO is paving the way for a lot of photographers to not considering buying the next upgrade since we are disappointed by the way of discounting this upgrade or providing something really worth the money. This could be a dangerous terrain for them in the future. But nobody knows what they paid for to Google. If the source code was cheap enough selling the plugins today without really developing it for future uses and therefore earning lesser amounts of money in the future could be no problem for them.

DXO yesterday sends invitations to webinars and I will try to figure out if there are some more benefits of the new version or better ways to use this subpar implemented new Photoshop plugin.

Can you confirm this about the Nik collection, specifically? DxO itself is a separate program but this is a separate product from that.

I'm glad to show you.
You can see me opening a TIFF file converted from a Canon RAW file only using macOS Catalina's preview program. Then I right click this file in Finder and macOS lets you choose which program you want to use to open this file. There you can choose e.g. Color Efex or any other Efex software from the recent NIK Collection. And then it opens this TIFF :)
Works with JPGs as well and I guess with a lot of other formats. Oddly it doesn't open Canon's RAWs directly from the finder but if you use the Photoshop plugin it opens e.g. .cr2 files directly.

(Sorry, parts of the used software are in German language but I think you get the idea.)

I subscribe to Lightroom/Photoshop. It costs me $9.99/month and I have never felt gouged. I have felt gouged at Starbucks. ;) I've also felt gouged paying $1.79 for a 20oz soda. ;) Personally, considering the prices of everyday items that I end up pissing away, Adobe is a bargain. 33 cents a day. Heck, I pay $45/month for a phone I hardly ever use.

For $9.99 a month ($7.99) during some promotions you get Bridge, Behance, LR, and PS. Back when it was licensed software I believe it cost more than that if you kept up with annual updates. Unless of course you were just bootlegging the software which I think most of the people who bitch about were doing and now can’t steal it and are butthurt about it. That’s very inexpensive and cheaper than the license/update model. If you’re making money with your photography its a no brainer and Adobe are products for professionals, if your a hobbyist then I can see your point. There are things I use PS for all the time that no other software has the tools for or that support my library of actions and plugins essential to my workflow.

I think its 12.99 a month I'm paying for Photoshop / Lightroom. For me its worth it. I use it alot. It used to be a crazy price when it wasn't subscription. Most people couldn't afford it. My only concern is that they are in a near monopoly situation and have a captive audience. If you stop your subscription the software is rendered useless. It doesn't give Adobe a huge incentive to innovate or add improved features or new way of doing things that are currently complicated. You'd hope it would open up opportunties for software like Nik software but not if they are selling upgrades that has very little in it upgraded.

I see. So hence the name, it's a "collection" of individual apps, which may be used as plugins in PS/LR, but not necessarily.
