I know this is at a rumors stage right now!? but will canon throw a curveball and launch a ff lower than 2000$ USD? i just recently bought my 5dmk2! dont know if return it ! and wait for it? or just dont bother!!! help!

Yeah hate to bash you but enjoy your new purchase. If anything, keep for a few months and sell later.

I don't see how Nikon will possibly release this camera, except if they use a recycled D3X 24MP sensor.

It's a rumor and not likely to be true. Besides that, are you Canon or Nikon? I have the 5d2 and it's still one of the best cameras in the world. Believe that

There's not even a rumor of a cheaper Canon FF right now - but they sure did make a big gap in their product lineup which is still being filled by the 5D2.

We'd all like to know if something new will come along to take the 5D2's lower spot on the ladder or if it'll just disappear and leave the 5D3 as Canon's cheapest FF.

If Nikon does produce a D600 close to the rumored specs then Canon may continue to produce the 5D2 or replace it with a more competitive model (price and or features/performance) to more directly compete with it. It's really tough to say, I'm not a marketing guru to figure out how they might respond.

I'd LOVE to see some low cost FF options from either Co. at a lower price point than present by keeping the cameras simple and minimally featured but capable of great IQ. Problem is, that darn video feature keeps creeping into peoples' mindsets and that can handicap both price, IQ and overall stills performance.

Either way I think we'll see some very interesting products over the next 12 months from Canon, Nikon and possibly even Pentax. Pentax' strange little K-01 hybrid is something the other guys should be considering - a mirrorless camera with a crop sensor that uses existing DSLR lenses for a good price and has a decent feature set.

Canon is rumored to be working on a mirrorless system, no word if it'll utilize or be compatible with the EOS mount tho.

Meanwhile, go enjoy your 5D2, it's one of the best things out there in that price range and the cheapest FF you can get. :) (Unless you want a D700?..)

If Canon and Nikon can figure out how to produce FF at relatively low cost (somewhere between D60 and 7D, say), I think it would be great for many of us. It should significantly increase the number of FF cameras in circulation, which in turn would increase sales of the FF lenses in relation to EF-S. Hopefully this would encourage Canon to drop the prices on those lenses due to economies of scale.

It would also mean someone like me, an amateur with limited budget, might be able to justify a second FF body. I would use the 5D2 I recently bought as my main body, and an entry level FF when I wanted to be able to switch quickly between lenses. Right now I find myself missing shots because it takes too long to pull the lens off the body and attach the new one. If I'm feeling lazy I may not take the shot at all because it seems like too trouble (or the family is yelling at me to quit fiddling with my camera and get a move on! ::) )

I imagine the 5D Mark II will hang around for a while, as Canon themselves have stated. It has BECOME their "D600." Sure, it might be a little old, but that camera was way ahead of its time and still hold up with the newer equivalents.

In the last few years, dSLR tech hasn't moved a great deal, in actual terms. The camera market is not like the computer hardware market, where the technology doubles and the price halves every twelve months.

Like sony/nikon can't make a damn new 24MP sensor if they felt like it after they crancked up a 36.3MP one ::)
Time will tell but it sounds plausible and NR's track record on new bodies has been nearly impecable for years. So I belive it.

Nikon has also been busy making updating their f1.8 cheap primes and throwing in the mix budget zooms like the 24-300, 24-120, 16-35, and the seen in patents 70-200 f/4 along with another patented vary aperture cheap zoom. Such camera would fall right in line with the strategy of more affordable full frame for people that can't afford a D800 with top of the line primes and zooms. That combined with the fact that the D400 is extremely late gives a lot of credibility that nikon is creating a new full frame camera to replace their high end APS-C offering.

Cameras take photos. Regardless of all of the stuff people talk about here, they do it with similar success levels until you are working on a very specific application. In fact, lenses are generally more important to the look of the photos than bodies and, certainly in the prime market, canon had a considerable lead.

Take photos. Improve your photography. Ignore the bs.

If the latest rumors are true then camera will have a big drawback.

  • The price of the D600 is rumored to be very low - maybe as low as $1500.
  • The sensor inside the D600 will probably be 24MP (made by Sony, modified by Nikon).
  • The D600 will probably not have an internal AF motor, which means it will work only with AF-S lenses (just like the D3200 and D5100).
  • The D600 will have HD video.
  • Announcement before Photokina (September 2012).
  • One or more low-priced f/4 lenses will be announced with the D600. For example, Nikon recently filed a patent for a 24-70mm f/3.5-4.5 full frame lens which seems to be designed for a cheaper FX DSLR body.

I second that opinion. How gay would that be to NOT have a built in AF motor? There goes Nikon's compatibility with all older glass. Basically they're abandoning any lens made before the year 2000.

If you're going to cut down and produce a cheap(er) full frame body, you're going to have to remove what you can to get the price down. The internal motor would be my 1st choice of things to ditch too. Is this any worse than lower bodies not having the motor? If you want more, you pay more for the D800/D4. If you pay less, expect less.

Besides, MF is no problem for many. Look at Zeiss lenses, and the Leica system.

very minor drawback as most of the nikon lenses are AF-S (anything good anyways) AND all the budget full frame lenses are AF-S.

The -D variant that requires the focus motor has fallen out of popularity with only hardcore old school photographers keeping theirs. nearly all lack IS and non support instant manual override. D lenses are a dog and nikonians have been purging them out of their inventory as fast as they got upgraded.

In other words, making the camera chaper but getting rid of something they don't need anyways, is the right call.

nearly nothing made before 2000 is worth it ::)
all their fast primes are AFS. all their telephotos are AFS. Pretty much 95% of all their lineup is AF-S and whenever you compare AFS vs AFD, you wouldn't pick the D because the AFS will be better.

those in nikon camp that want backwards compatibility will just go for the D700 or D800.

it's a total non issue.

Even IF this such rumors come true in the future, I wouldn't go into panic mode about your 5D Mark 2 purchase. I think that at least in image quality for sure, the 5D Mark 2 will still be better than whatever new FF entry-level body. Remember, it still holds the title "5D" and would still not be considered "entry-level" right?

Considering that low ISO it matches the 5d3 I totally agree.

I recently received my 5Dii from Canon USA's "refurbished" inventory during their last 20% off sale- paid only 1500! If I didn't know it was refurbished, I would have thought it was new. Latest firmware and updated manual.

The first thing I did was pop in an EG-s focusing screen- focuses great to me. Pretty affordable set up & a nice pair to my 7D!

I'll continue to spend my money on glass...

By the time I found out about the 20% off refurbs they were out of stock or I would've picked one up too!

YES, YES, YES ... bring it on Nikon! A D600 with further improved D3x 24 MP FF-sensor, 5fps and reasonably good AF-system for 1.5k USD/€

That will do to Canon in the FF/enthusiast/amateur market segment, what the D800 does in the semi-pro/Pro market segment ... final call for Canon's geriatric management!

PS: I am really looking forward to a nice USD/€ 1500 cash-back deal on the 5D3 deal this fall! :-)
