RF 16mm f/2.8 STM

Don’t see a thread yet for folks to share images from the above referenced lens. Just picked this up. Thought I’d create a home. Feel free to share your favorites captured with this little ultra wide.

My first two, just testing it out.


I can tell I need to be mindful of my shutter speed with no image stabilization in the lens or in my RP. I think the corrections work great In DPP4.

I have fun with my 16mm. f/2.8 is nice to have.

OK, anyone debating whether going 14-35/4 vs. 16/2.8? I have the 24-105/4 on me most of the time except when I'm really trying to travel light (biking, or out in the city but doing a huge amount of shopping and probably filling backpack to bursting).

So I'm thinking I can crop the 16 up to 24mm if I really can't just zoom with my feet, and still have 20MP of my R5's 45MP. Of course one can't go wider than 16mm this way, but you can simply panorama if you have to with most wider-than-16mm subjects.

The Canon graphs show the 14-35 being substantially sharper than the 16, but I believe these graphs are wide-open, and if so the 16 would likely close that gap up to nothing when stopped down to f/4. (and if you're cropping out only the central 2/3 of height and width, you're getting the higher-resolution portion of the image anyway.)

I have the RF16 and used it as the primary lens on this vacation and liked it very much. But I would appreciate if it could zoom.
So I’m looking at the 14-35L and the upcoming 15-30 non-L. The 3x price difference makes the L quite unattractive, but I have 3 months to think about it till the next vacation
Even in Lightroom the RF16 looks quite good, when I get back home I’d like to try DXO viewpoint, as mentioned by @neuroanatomist in another thread, to correct distorted faces on the edges.

Took the 16 f/2.8 to Lake Michigan at Ludington State Park. A bit of fall. A bit of sunset at the beach. Fun and portable.

I use this lens too seldom; but that reflects more my lack of confidence with the focal length; and often I just use my phone's ultrawide. When I first got it in the summer of 2022 I made more of an effort to take it out though, and it impressed me.

I actually used the lens on an R1 yesterday, I didn't bring anything wider than 50mm on the family trip. However, the 16 was on my son's R50 and I borrowed it. I am not a wide angle shooter, but I am pretty impressed with the little thing. I may use it some more when I want to do this random wide stuff.

Some night sky pics with 16mm from the "Feldberg". I spent three days there with my fourthgraders. The pics were taken in October 2023 at around 9-10. P.M. Given the time, it wasn't "really" dark, but having a quarter of a moon and 48 kids to watch, I didn't want to stay awake till 2.00 A.M. or so

These pics were also taken at the "Feldberg". This time around I went hiking with my wife (we actually checked out the youth hostel during). I absolutely love the 16mm for hiking and think it is quite capable lens for that.

This is a pano of three images taken in Tenerife in August. I did take more pics that night, but I haven't gone through post-processing with them yet. Taken with the RF 16mm and R5

Thank you. I got lucky with the cloud. The heat (or the light) from the floor lamps next to the church did their job nicely.

I've been flirting with the idea of picking up this lens for some time, mainly with rationale that Bryan/TDP expressed – "What if you could take a compact prime lens to cover the widest angle needs with the general-purpose zoom lens handling the rest?"

I ordered it yesterday, sort of an impulse buy. Yesterday evening, I was at my youngest's middle school concert performance with a full backpack of gear, and decided that for my oldest's high school graduation tonight I wanted to take just one toploader bag (the on-stage photographer will get pics of the diploma handoff, far better than I would get from the stands with the families of about 500 graduates). I was planning to take the 24-105/2.8, but had also considered the 14-35/4 because there will be some group shots after and the field will be crowded. So the solution will be to put the 16/2.8 in the pocket of the toploader, in case I need a few wide shots. Courtesy of Amazon, the lens that I ordered late last night was on my doorstep when I woke up this morning, and the hood is out for delivery today.
