Should I buy a 1dx

Cameras are expensive. The 1DX is a really expensive camera. As others have said, the 5D MKIII is a very capable camera and unless you need more fps, personally I'd hold-off until the next 1D is released.

New products are "mythical" yes, but the rumour milll is pretty accurate. Yes, there's always a new product on the horizon, but there is always a better time to buy. If you destroyed your 5D, I'd say: "yes, do it" ... but there will be a new 1D in 2015 [as the product cycles seem to point out]. Once the new 1D comes out, the 1DX will depreciate like last year's iPhone. Not that that's a huge issue, but if you're dropping $5-$6K+ on a new body, you kind of want the latest and greatest.

If you have an awesome camera [like you do], I'd personally hold off. The only reason I'd buy another 1DX right now would be: 1] to have a second identical body and prices have dropped substantially; 2] I've destroyed my current camera and need another one ASAP to continue working.

I'm in the same predicament computer wise: I really need the power of a MacPro for video editing/graphics as my current 4yo Mac is dogging it, but we're kind of getting close to a new gen MacPro ... so I'm going to hold off a bit longer ... or as long as I can stand it.

Hei,

you have to think if you are going to be able to take back at least some of the money you have "invested" in the 1DX. I'd rather call "invest" a lens.

Think that this camera will decrease its price, probably reaching half of the actual within 2-3 years (second hand of course). It will be still an awesome camera with the same functions as today. But probably the 1DX II will be the flagship, so people will try to sell the 1DX to partially fund the newest. 1D mark IV is now here in Finland about 2000 Euros used, I am not sure how much was originally but I am sure a lot :)

IMHO 5D III is a wonderful camera i wish to have (I am still holding a 5D II), just enjoy it and dont think about the newest of the newest, go out and shoot and stop thinking about gear... unless you are a pro, of course.

Cheers!
Victor

I would not buy it unless there was a reason you ABSOLUTELY needed it RIGHT NOW. Waiting for the next model is different when it literally could be 6 months away particularly when you are going to be spending this amount of money. I own the 1Dx and have used the 5Diii before and if I had the 5Diii right now I would simply wait 6 months to buy an upgraded 1Dx. Yes I love the 1Dx because of its continuous auto focus while Im holding the button down a few seconds however that is simply a convenience not something I must have. The difference in low light isnt anything major between the 2 cameras. JUST WAIT.....you will be happy you did. You always buy a camera at the very beginning of the cycle so you dont regret what you have when something better comes out less than a year from when you made your purchase. Canon is going to have to be aggressive with the 1Dx ii and 5d4 to compete with Sony.

One good thing about Canon's history of modest upgrades is that you can be relatively assured a 1DX mk II won't completely obsolete a mk I. It's one of the reasons Canon bodies have a pretty solid resale value.

According to those pro's who tested it, the 7D2 gives the 1DX a run for the money.
The big drawback on the 1DX is the lack of a good silent shutter at both single shot and higher speeds. Other than the obvious build quality advantage, bigger battery and the fact you can use it in portrait mode more easily I can't see the need to move from the 5D111 unless you want those high fps which is useful on occasion. I think I'd check out the 7D2 first.
If you have invested in lots of SD cards you won't be able to use them in a 1DX either.
