I seldom have to downsize bird images to post here (severe cropping is the rule rather than the exception). Not so this time...there's enough pixels in the original to do a nice 13"x19" at 250dpi...

An Ash-throated Flycatcher landed in front of me, with the late afternoon light illuminating it against a shadowed background.

If you are looking to isolate the bird from the background, why not shoot wide open?
Because at that background you can shoot at any aperture (concerning the background!). And there is not wide open (in the classical understanding, I mean like less than f11 in this case) with that lens (and "+2x" I would decipher as a 2x convertor. So, make the math - the lens is very "wide open"...)

First time that I could get the little grebes (tachybaptus ruficollis) in fromt of my lens.
Seems they didn't like my 5D4 ;) Sereously, they were really shy all the time and always hid in the reed.
These were really far away and 1:1 crops.
Looking at the fish in the beak it seems they have chicks.

Nice series, Maximilian. I especially like the second picture. Breakfast time for this little grebe. :)
It was afternoon ;) and I suppose the fish was for their chicks. Because the grebe carried it into the reeds.
And the fish is also in the beak in the first pic when it tried its "Jesus-over-water" performance. :p

I managed to find the grebe chicks.
I took a few difficult shots through the reeds and quickly withdrew again not to disturb them.
