Instant thought:I took some shots as reflex action of a Grey Heron flying overhead and saw this evening a peculiar growth from under its neck. Any ideas what it could be?
Yeah! I agree with you. It's a strange thing. I have no real idea.I don't think so. Here is another crop with the exposure increased. You can see that the appendage appears to start from behind the beak, which is fully closed anyway...

The end looks like a feather that's glued together by some blood or mud. Maybe something glued together with its breast feathers
